My 24" iMac won't read audio cds--ejects them after about 15 seconds

My 24" intel iMac won't read audio cds. It ejects them after about 15 seconds. I have virtually never played cds on this machine in five years. It plays dads with no problem. Anybody have any feedback. I also saw a fix by deleting some presence files.

I saw this on a forum from about four years ago:
Trash the following folders:
com.apple.kernelcaches (from System/Library/Caches
extensions.kextcache (from System/Library
CDInfo.cidb (from Home/Library/Preferences
Restart
Could this be a fix.
Unfortunately, I can't reset PRAM. I've done it a thousand times over twenty years, but my machine simply boots up without the extra chimes.

  • 10.5.7 Won't Read Audio CDs?

I installed 10.5.7 a couple of days ago. All went well and continues to do so except for 1 minor quirk, none of my audio CDs can be read by the dvd drive, I have managed to burn both CD and DVDs though using toast 8, but I'm unable to read audio CDs new AND old. Anyone one else having trouble with Audio CDs? [DVDs are fine]
    Macbook 10.5.7, 4 gig ram 160gig hd

First, my MBP plays CDs fine, so it's not 10.5.7, at least in my case.
What happens when you insert an audio CD? Does it appear at all on the desktop?
    Try a PRAM reset.
AFAIK, the lasers for reading CDs and DVDs are different. CDs use a 700nm laser, DVDs a 640nm.
The lasers for burning are different again.
It's just possible that the CD laser in your drive is not working.
Other than a PRAM reset, I am not sure what you can do.

  • MacBook Pro won't read audio cds

My MacBook Pro will not read digital audio cds.
It has in the past, but now it seems to have stopped reading them.
I have several purchased cds I would like to get on itunes, but I can't get it to recognize the discs.
I can hear it spinning several times, like it is trying to access the disc, then it ejects it without mounting.
It does not appear in iTunes, or anywhere on the desktop.
It will read and burn blank cds and dvds.
    I havde a 17" MacBook Pro, 2009, with a MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-868 drive.
Anyone have any ideas how to get it to work again or what the problem could be?

yes it could but probably not after testing ten different CDs right? Got the very same scenarion and asked the question again here, pls see https://discussions.apple.com/message/22423010#22423010

  • My Mac won't read discs. Spits them out within seconds.

Why would it just stop working? We hardly ever use it. It won't even take the Mac discs. Help!!

Ok, I have already done all of these steps and nothing has helped!  Here's my related problem, any suggestions?
My iMac won't even burn a single disc!  Everytime I insert a blank disc it spits it out telling me it's not blank and won't burn onto it.  I know the CDs are blank.  I tried 10 from a brand new stack!  I finally sent the playlist to my husband's PC (he has iTunes loaded) and he burned the CD fine using the same blank discs that my iMac kept spitting out.
Today I tried to play a music CD.  It spit it out in seconds of me putting it in.  I can play it on my DVD player, my husband's computer, my entertainment center, my car CD player but not my iMac  No explanation, just wouldn't accept the CD.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON BUT IT'S VERY IRRITATING!!!
On top of all of this, when I upgraded my Apple Operating System the ChromCast program I was successfully using before stopped working giving me a Green Screen of Death.
    APPLE!!  ***!!!
Could really use some guildance here...starting to really give up on Apple...way too many problems with too many different items and no solution when my husband's PC is doing just fine!

  • IMac won't read the System Install DVD after trying a Software Update (Whic

Last weekend I tried downloading the 10.4.7 update to my iMac. Towards the end of the download the iMac crashed out and said that the Software Update was unsuccessful. As this was the case I tried rerunning the 'Software Update' again but after a few seconds of the application running and the little window being on the screen, it just dropped out and exited. As this was therefore not working I tried to download the Software Update as a Stand Alone application. I found after downloading the file that mounting a disk image on my iMac no longer works. My next step was to try and reinstall OS X from the System Install DVD. I put the DVD in the DVD Drive and found that after it whirred for about 20 seconds, the disk ejected. I thought this was odd so I tried to boot the iMac , holding down the 'C' key once the DVD was in place inside the iMac. The Mac powered up and then the DVD whirred for a while and once again it ejected the DVD. I now have no way of reinstalling OS X..and am at a loss. I called up the supplier of the iMac as I only purchased it in May 2006. They advised me that the warranty only covers Hardware and not Software. They said with a problem like this it could be expensive to try and work out what is causing it as it is sort of an unknown. I would like to know if anyone else has had this problem, is there some way I can see what the iMac is doing when it is trying to read the DVD and the ejects it, and is there some way of 'resetting' the iMac so that it is in the initial state. I know the BIOS on these machines is a 'soft' BIOS so as the supplier said, it is quite possible that the Software Update has corrupted the soft BIOS on the machine. Any ideas?

Yes. It is possible that the DVD could be bad.
It is also possible that your corrupted installation is preventing the DVD from working right.
It would seem strange, except that this happened with another guy as well. But, once we disconnected his internal hard drive with the corrupted OS 10.4.7 install, the machine booted from the DVD and worked properly. We then connected a different hard drive to install to, and it worked fine. Then, we connected the drive as a secondary and formatted it and it resumed working.
But, with an iMac CoreDuo, you cannot open the machine to unplug the drive. So, you'll be a bit stuck if you require the same solution. He had a PowerMac G5.
But, basically, his corrupted OS 10.4.7 installation was preventing booting from a CD, booting into safe mode, booting from an external drive, or any other kind of booting.
So, for him, the only option was disconnecting the internal drive and installing on another one.
I hope this doesn't turn out to be necessary on your system as well. If so, you'll need to take it into the shop for servicing.
The only other option I could think of is to try and boot it into Target Disk mode, and format it's drive with another computer. Perhaps that would work.
Once your internal drive has been cleared (formatted), then it may boot from the DVD again (assuming your problem is the same as the other guys).
You can read about Target Disk Mode here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
You can read about the steps we took to troubleshoot and repair the other guys machine here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2629919#2629919
Perhaps that will help explain what I described above.
    I hope this helps.

  • IMac 9.1 has stopped playing DVDs, ejects them after about ten seconds without reading them

This morning my iMac has stopped playing DVDs altogether. It had been struggling to play them before, but now it won't even read them.
I'm running a 9.1, so the warranty is well past due. Not sure if there's anything I can do at this point to fix it, tried to manually eject the SuperDrive in Applications (as per a troubleshooting method) but that doesn't work either. Anyone know a way to fix this?

I would start first with some basic resets, do a SMC AND PRAM reset first, do each 2-3 times and then test. If you don't know how please click  Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets. If those don't work then I suspect your SuperDrive is either dirty or worn out. You can go to your local office supply store and get a CD/DVD cleaning kit. If that fails then take the machine in for service.

  • After SL-DVD drive won't read any dvd-ejects it after spinning some time

Yesterday I bought the SnowLeopard DVD in order to do the update of my Mac OS.
Right after inserting the DVD in the drive (MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8221) it started to have some problems with reading the DVD.
The Drive has stopped recognizing/reading any blank DVD media (and many recorded DVDs, including movie discs). It spins for some time with a noise and then ejects it out. The same media works fine in my Toshiba laptop.
I tried several times, but the drive isn't able to read the DVD and now has the same problem with other CD-Roms and DVD.
I am very suprised (and angry) about it, especially because I hardly use the drive.
As a lot of other people are having the same problem, there seems to be a structural problem with the drive and I think that Apple has to clearify if they are planning to do something and what.

Mine MacBook seems to be doing almost the same thing. The SL disk spins a bit then is ejected. It does the same thing with my first SL disk and the one Amazon sent as a replacement. I had the same trouble with the 10.5 Install disk purchased retail. Apple sent a replacement Non-retail disk and it worked. I can burn DVDs and read DVDs I've burned.

  • IMAC won't play audio CD's

iMAC MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-875 won;t read audio CD's. Reads DVD's and data CD's fine, but won't read/play audio CD's. Insert an audio CD, whirls around a bit then spits it back out after about 10 seconds.
I reset the PRAM and NVRAM, http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    Reset the SMC; http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
I also did a zero-out erase and re-install of OSX. Nothing helped
I found this thread about cleaning the lense with a credit card and a soft cloth, but didn't work either.

I had just cleaned out the garage, closets, etc and have a mountain of CD's ready to convert to MP3's. It's incredibly frustrating to say the least. Anyone know what they charge at the Apple store? Do they charge just to diagnose the problem?

  • My CD/DVD-rom drive won't read audio cd's

Since installing itunes on my laptop, the CD/DVD rom drive won't read audio cd's any more! However, it will read data CD's and dvds.
It didn't stop all at once...it started failing to read the odd random audio cd. Over time, gradually more and more CD's not recognised until no audio cd's readable at all!
When I say 'not recognised' I mean that if you look in the cd-rom file with a music disc inserted it thinks the drive is empty. The drive spins the disc a few times and then gives up. As only music cd's affected I suspect this is something to do with the itunes software. I've tried the various troubleshooting tips on itunes help but no joy....has anyone else had this problem / anyone know of a possible solution?
    Thanks
    Tiny

I had the same problem and I contacted a support team. They suggested that I upgrade my computer's power supply and I did. I had a 250W drive and now I have a 350W drive and it reads the CDs perfectly; except for one certain CD.

  • G5 dual-core won't burn audio CDs

I have a brand new dual-core 2.0 Ghz G5. It won't burn audio CDs that play on any of my dedicated CD players.
The CD players are fine. In fact, I had a PB G4 that I used to burn CDs that play perfectly on all of them up until I got the G5. I have tried three different brands of CD-R media (Sony, Maxell, TDK - all of which worked just fine on the G4) to no avail. I've tried burning from both Toast and iTunes 6.0.1, at speeds as low as 2x. I even did a complete clean install of OS X and tried burning from a fresh user account (with iTunes 5.0.1). Same problem.
Here's what happens: the CD burns "successfully" in iTunes and Toast (no error messages), and it shows up on the desktop and in the iTunes menu and plays fine on my computer. But when I put it into a CD player and press play, it just spins around and around and doesn't ever start playing.
This is incredibly frustrating and I'm not sure what to do at this point. I have contacted Apple but they are hesitant to replace the optical drive. According to them, if it's burning CDs that play on my computer, then the drive is OK. They admitted that it might be more "sensitive" than my Powerbook's drive, and perhaps "incompatible" with my dedicated CD players. I asked them what the point of having a Superdrive is if it won't burn CDs that work on any dedicated CD players... well, the conversation got unpleasant after that.
If anyone has any ideas for how to troubleshoot this, or fix it, I'm all ears!
G5 2.0 dual-core   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   17" Apple LCD, iSight, Bluetooth Keyboard & Logitech Cordless Laser Mouse

I don't have the dual-core but experienced the same thing. I tried to burn a DVD after having my G5 for one year. It didn't burn the disk. I called Apple and no support for G5 not in warranty. I purchased a new DVD burner and didn't have any problems since. The old burner was a Sony, the new one a pioneer DVR 106D.
I recently purchased DL DVR Pioneer drive (DVR DL-110D) and I can't even put a CD in the drive to burn. Worst money I ever spent. Don't know how Apple is on support of the DL drives but I'm going back to the old DVR-106D!

  • Tecra 9100 won't read burned CDs

    Hi.
I have a Tecra T9100 and the MAT****A DVDROM now won't*read burned CDs.
It has no problems when reading manufactured CDs / DVDs.
I noticed this after upgrading the BIOS with the 1.6 version.
Is there something else I need to do / configure / install ?
    Thank you.

    Hi
Maybe you should check different CDs from different manufacturers and should change the burning speed to the slowest one.
If this will not help then a CD/DVD drive issue might be the reason why not all disks are readable.
    Cheers

  • IMAC won't read sandisk 8gb sdhc from canon hf m-31 hd camcorder

IMAC won't read Sandisk 8GB SDHC card from Canon HF M-31 HD camcorder

    Your camcorder is fine with iMovie 09. My suggestions are two;
1)Canons sometimes take a little bit of effort to connect. Try disconnecting and then reconnecting your camcorder. Try shutting down iMovie and then turning it back on. I have a Canon hf100 usb camera also and love it. I just put up with the odd frustration of it sometimes not recognizing the connection.
    2) Click on the camera icon in the main iMovie interface (middle, extreme left). See if your camera is "seen" my iMovie. If not, try disconnecting and reconnecting the camcorder.

  • Why my new iMac won't read my external hard drive?

Why my new imac won't read my external hard drive??

    Liz,
Sorry for not responding sooner, I support your position completely - as for the external drive I assumed that the individual was a previous mac user and knew about that (my mistake) at home I have a couple of external drives
one drive is acknowledged regardless of format (mac/win) its a partitioned drive.... the other one - far as the mac is concerned does exist when i connect it.  I believe its a win only drive (will have to check the specs on it) but it works on the win-notebooks.
so my point of reference was coming that perspective, with no additional posts I have to assume you had the correct answer.  have a great day.

  • IMac won't read startup disk

Longstanding problem. Older iMac won't read the Leopard disk. I got around this by using my daughter's iBook in slave mode and then installing 10.5. Everything works but I can't start up with the disk to use disk utilities. It was suggested that I get a new ext dvd drive which I did. (Kanguru qs2)
I started it up and installed Office for Mac without a problem. Then I tried to use the 10.5 disk and it would not read it. I had a hard time getting the disk to eject. After it did eject I tried using some other disks including Office and none of them work now. Any ideas?

Sounds like your new drive broke.
