My 2Ghz MacBook Pro is waiting in it's box....

The local Apple store called me today. A 2Ghz MBP arrived and my name was next.
I picked it up on my lunch hour, now it's sitting in a box, waiting for me to open it.
I have about 2 more hours before I leave work. I guess this is a "good" problem to have, huh?

I'm home, we are finished with dinner, and the MBP is set up.
Now, I have to finish installing my software, and get a WinXP Pro guest pc set up in Q.app.
As far as noises go...the little bit of "hiss" that I hear with my head too close to the machine doesn't bother me, and I wouldn't even categorize it as a flaw.
This thing rocks!
I have officiall switched. Oh, I'm a Windows System Administrator by day.

  • Early 2011 2GHz Macbook pro distorted blue screen then wont boot, 3 times in last 2 weeks

I have an early 2011, 2GHz macbook pro (15' model with ati radeon graphics). It was running fine for the last two years. Over the last couple of weeks, following things happen:
    1. I was running on bootcamp windows, browsing and some flash content was open, suddenly distorted blue stripes appear and it froze. Force shut down using power button, turn on again and it wont boot on windows or mac, or recovery partition or from the dvd. Tried for about 4 hours, after nvram, pram reset, it was able to safe boot, then run disk utility to verify and repair the disk, it said that there were problems with hard drive and fixed, then booted normally.
    2. I thought that the problem might be because I was on windows, so took a back up of the windows drive, erased it and installed windows 8 using bootcamp. It ran well for an week. After that, once I connected it with the tv using HDMI to watch a video, after I disconnected it, the screen was garbled over the windows start screen, but I was able to command restart normally. After restart, it wont boot to windows or mac.
    3. After several hours of trying, i was able to boot using the dvd this time, it said it 'can not install mac on the hard drive', erased the hard drive and it was able to install the os (snow leopard). After completing install, logged in to app store to download previously purchased mountain lion. Then ran it to upgrade the os, after the upgrade was completed, at the point when it prompts for apple id and password to set up icloud, it again froze with distorted blue screen. Shut down forcefully. Then turn on again and it wont boot. After the white screen and the sound, it shows the apple logo and spinning wheel for a while, then a bright white screen and nothing happens.
Can anybody help reading the symptoms?

I have the Early 2011 2GHz Macbook Pro and I have the same problem too.
I switched out the logicboard a month ago and today the graphics just went distorted.
Any solutions? Now I'm thinking it is the Graphics Card.

  • 2.2ghz macbook pro screen

Hi, my macbook pro screen cracked after 8 days. I bought a replacement screen brand new online. I have 2 questions, first my machine is the 2.2ghz macbook pro that was 1999.99 list price. Is the screen I purchased the correct one? its model number M9969LL/A and approximately how much labor time should I expect to pay for to re-install this?
Is it true that apple does not cover these? The machine did not drop or anything and there is no damage to it. There is just a black circle then a spider web of glass on the inside and then all the pixels have turned to colored lines.
Thanks and I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving!!

  • Should I get a 2013 macbook air, a macbook pro 13 inch, a regular macbook pro or wait for the next generation of haswell macbook pros?

So im a little confused, i dont know what macbook should i get.
    I want a macbook for:
    surf the web
Do some school work like powerpoint, excel, word etc.
    store music and pictures
This macbook i will probably have it for like 3 years so i wanna make sure the macbook i choose will last.
I really would like a macbook pro but the thing is that i`ve have been hearing that a new generation of retina macbook pros will be coming this fall so i wanna know your opinion if it is worth waiting for the next gen of macbooks.
    thanks

For what your doing, a $400 PC laptop will do and if it gets lost or stolen (as long as you make backups) it's really no big deal. Buy another.
A Mac will set you back almost $2000 for the same performance by the time you thrown in the 3 year warranty, tax and backup drives etc.
The higher end Mac's closer to $3000.
Also after 3 years after spending so much money you want to fix it to keep it going, a cheap PC you just get a new one.
In some instances it's not smart to get a Mac, they are often a target for theft and if your young, your prey.

  • Should i upgrade from early 2008 macbook pro or wait until 2015?

    Hi,
I'm debating on whether to bite the bullet now and buy the new macbook pro (15 inch) or wait until next year. i know this is practically obsolete in Apple years, but it actually still runs ok for my purposes (not used for work). I added RAM to 6 and am currently running Yosemite. I've read that many people keep their original macs for years. Advice helpful. Thanks!

Do you NEED  new computer for any particular reason or is this just a "Want"?
If you need a new computer NOW then buy one. If not then wait.

  • MacBook Pro 15" i7,  out of the box w/problems

My MacBook Pro is brand new out of the box, less than 48 hours, and I'm already having issues with it.
Before the first 24 hours out of the box, I got a message for a forced shut down (see image here: http://www.mactropolis.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/macosxkernelpanic.png)
The following day, after coming out of sleep mode, I found it with a scrambled screen.
I haven't installed or transferred anything onto it whatsoever, but just been using Safari. I've heard that people are having problems with using Safari with webpages using Flash, but that might not explain the forced shut down.
I ran disk utility after the forced shut down and a few permissions were fixed but there were no other problems. After the scrambled screen, I ran an extended hardware test twice, and no problems were detected
I'm not sure there are any grounds for taking this to the Genius Bar, but I'm rather irritated for this to be happening when I haven't really started using this computer for more than browsing the internet.
Any suggestions? Might it be as simple as using something other than Safari?

The solution is extremely simple, return it for another. If you bought it from an Apple Store it should be no problem. If you bought it from an Apple Reseller you need to deal with them directly.
    Don't wait, do it today.
    Roger

  • How do i restore my macbook pro to its out of the box settings?

    Hi folks,
I recently got a new macbook pro and used Time Machine to import all of my data and settings from my old macbook into my new one. I am now realizing that there is a bunch of stuff on my old hard drive that I don't want on my new one. What I'd like to do is start over -- wipe all of the stuff I've imported onto my new computer so it's fresh and clean again, and then import just some select files -- instead of my entire hard drive. Any suggestions?
    Many thanks!

First of all, save all the files you want to keep (photos, documents etc.) on a separate drive or in the cloud. Make sure you are connected to the Internet. After that, follow these steps:
Restart your Mac. Once it restarts and the grey screen appears, press and hold the Command and R keys.
Select Disk Utility and click Continue.
Select your startup disk on the left and click the Erase tab.
Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) from the Format menu, enter a name, and then click Erase.
Select Reinstall OS X, click Continue, and then follow the instructions on your screen.

  • First time Mac buyer: Buying a 2011 macbook pro or waiting till 2012?

    Hey all,
I'm currently a student but I'm graduating in December and my parents said they would help me get a macbook (no time limit on when necessarily).  I have been a lifetime Windows user and I still like Windows, but my Toshiba is getting old and really needs to be replaced.  Now I know that the new MBP's should be coming out in Feb or something like that.  my question is do you think that I should wait to buy it when the new ones come out or should I get one before graduation when I can get my student pricing (only 100 bucks off at most).  Also should I go ahead and buy software and other things that I would get the student discount on (MS office, stuff like that)?  I'm looking into the 13 MBP, I really want a 15 MBP but its really expensive.  My Toshiba from 2007, is a 17in. I love the big screen and full keyboard but it has insanely crappy battery life making it basically a portable desktop.
I definitely will use my MBP for your standard web surfing, word processing, stuff like that.  I also will probably start using recording equipment for my MBP, possibly using Logic b/c my school has a nice discount on it.   Another side note is I wouldn't mind it being capable of gaming, I haven't had a gaming capable PC in 5-6 years but its definitely not a necessity.
I also want to know what everybody's opinion is on AppleCare, I've heard many different things.
    thanks

    EXTERNAL DISKS
External disks connect to the MBP through either the Firewire 800 or USB 2.0 conector.  Self-powered ones also have a wall plug.  The general appearance is a "brick" sitting on the desk next to the computer.
These are bonafide HD disks kept in external enclosures instead of being packed inside the computer.
They are overwhemingly the preferred solution to making backups of your computer.  You will find few opinions in this forum to the contrary.
One advantage to using these for backup is that thera are not hard-wired to the main system, so if a power surge takes out the main system, your "backups" are safe because they are usually disconnected when the surge hits.
Another advantage is that you have *yet another* copy of the contents of your startup disk.
Another advantage is that typically the HD inside the enclosure typically dies, not the cable connectors or HD interface in the box.  So when the HD in the enclosure dies (all HD die eventually), you can sometimes re-use the enclosure by placing a new HD.
macsales.com is a website that has tested parts and peieces for "Mac compatibility".  Prices are nice too.
If you ask for recommenations of EHD (external hard disks), please state your budget becuse they can be as cheap as $60 or more expensive than $250.  USB 2.0 is the slowest external interface.  Firewire 800 is twice as fast as USB .
    DISPLAY ADAPTERS
Yes, Thunderbolt port, using mini-display-to-? (you fill in ? with VGA or DVI or HDMI).  MiniDVI is for oldermodels, but looks deceptively like MiniDisplay -- be careful.
guess i'm behind on the tech lingo, I already have 3 different external HDD's totallying almost 3 gigs so I'm doing fine in that field (just got to change them to FAT32.  And as for the external display I'm not sure what I'm going to do that field...

  • MacBook Pro 2ghz and 1366x768 HDTV?

    Can a MacBook Pro 2ghz drive a 1366x768 HDTV?
The Displays pane does show 1360x768, but this doesn't look good with a ldc tv with a native resolution of 1366x768.
I couldn't find any information on this in the AppleCare area. There is an item that says the Mac Mini (early 2006) can do 1366x768. Apparantly 1366x768 does show up in the Mac Mini Displays Pane. What about the 2ghz MacBook Pro?
Is this a hardware or software limitation?

I am connecting my MBP to a 50" panasonic plasma using dvi out from MBP to dvi in connection on TV using straight dvi to dvi cable. Video is stunning! For the audio out to my Marantz AV receiver I purchased an inexpensive adaptor to enable toslink to toslink connection for digital audio into receiver. DVD's play in 5.1 audio goodness! Google Ramelectronics for the adaptors and cables. Couple with VLC for video playback of most all formats. MediaCentral is also groovy, I'm still using the beta, haven't tried the paid version (doesn't support 5.1 audio but does support playing Video_TS folders on hard drive). This is a great setup for viewing IPTV content, avi files, etc. IMHO Front Row is buggy.

  • Macbook Pro A1226 Keeps Freezing

Hello and best wishes for the new year,
My macbook freezes at different intervals but most of the time while it boots up or shorthly after; once in a while it will freeze after a longer period of time.
When it freezes I have to restart it a bunch of times, when it freezes on each occasion before I can eventually get some work done for a subtential period of time.
I had the same problem about 3 months ago where eventually it was impossible to boot and I send it to an online repair service that replaced the logic board with a new used one.
All along the hard drive could be access in T mode so I think it is good.
It worked for a while but now it is starting to act up again in the same manner.
From my research it seems like it could be the GPU, graphic card or maybe some weird kernel panics.
I am attaching 2 logs from the console between 2 freezes and the Etrecheck.
Should I attempt to repair and if yes how or is this machine done?
    Thank you.

I have done both of those, and even taken the computer in for a repair and the problem still hasn't been resolved. Any ideas? The apple store did a full system erase and reinstalled the software, and I'm still having freezing problems. After playing around on programs more, I have noticed that when I'm only using safari or itunes it's rarer for my computer to freeze (it still happens, just not as often). I have recently noticed that connecting my mac to my tv using a HDMI cord often causes instant freezes, and while I didn't think so before, it does seem that Sims 3 and Logic cause almost constant freezing too. Is it possible that this could be a graphics card issue or something like that? It seems weird to me that a computer with such high specs can still freeze playing a Sims 3 game or having a few safari tabs open while playing a song on itunes. I'm at a loss since I've now sent it in for two repairs and still haven't resolved the issue.

  • Macbook pro screen and case problems

    I have a 2ghz macbook pro 15in.
I have noticed dark spots and then little lines that i would call scratches on the screen. I have applecare till next year in April so i am under applecare but i am wondering if this is covered.
I have a dented case though its dented right on the power supply port. And on the right side of the screen the case is cracked at the bottom just about an inch up fron the corner.
Is this crack covered or will they say its from the drop that caused the dent?
I have noticed that my case in the front pops up on either side and when looking close i noticed that on one side the screw is gone and the place the screw goes into is not there.
Now when it fell it did not fall far and it was on carpet. But niether the case or screen turned like this untill just recently.
    any ideas?

The only way to find out will be to ask. As you know, Apple doesn't cover damage. A trained technician should be able to distinguish between what the fall may have done and something which is a factory defect. The crack is pretty far from the dent, but it's hard to say what someone might think. And I don't know what they would say about the missing screw or what it might have affected. But you should be able to get the screw replaced.
Check and see if your homeowner's policy would cover accidental damage. Or possibly your credit card company if you paid with one. If so, let Apple fix the damage. It's possible that if they decide the crack is unrelated to the fall, they will cover it. If you wait until Applecare is over, you know they won't cover anything. At least ask--you really have nothing to lose. At worst, they'll say no.
    Good luck!
