My 2nd generation iPod Shuffle suddenly quit - Fix?

My 2nd generation iPod Shuffle suddenly quit on me just recently with no warning.
The lights indications say t has no music on it but connecting it to the computer shows the loaded tunes. I tried a full reset and reloaded the tunes but still no joy.
Further reading suggests either a dead logic board or a sick battery.
As a last resort I am wondering if anyone knows of a software approach before I get the tools out and start pulling it apart.

I've found my own answer...
I was getting the green-orange-green-orange sequence of lights which all the info I had found to date said was the "No music" code. As I could see the MP3s on the iPod in iTunes I knew there was were MP3s on it.
Various knowledge seraches I did suggested adud battery or dead logic board - both terminal problems for this model unless you have spare parts ( which I do, courtesy of friends who have retired their Gen 2 iPods).
Then I found that under recent versions of iTunes (V 8 or later) it won't recognise podcasts or audio books as being present if you have the iPod set on shuffle.
I only ever listen to podcast and audio books on my Gen 2 AND had bumped the mode switch onto shuffle resulting in an apparently dead iPod. Put the  mode switch back to continuous and it's working again. Stupid !
I love Apple products  but I'm also a firm believer in the principle of "If it ain't broke don't fix it". All too often I seen Apple 'fix' something that wasn't broken over the 25 years I've been an Apple user.

  • 2nd generation ipod shuffle not recognized by usb 3.0 port, 2nd generation ipod shuffle not recognized by usb 3.0 port

    Hi,
My 2nd generation ipod shuffle will not connect to any usb 3.0 port.  I've tried on to computers -- one Windows XP and the other Windows 7.  Any ideas?

    Hi
I had the same issue with my Late 2009 Mac mini running Mavericks and iTunes 12. When I connected my 2nd generation iPod shuffle it would blink amber once then do nothing. This seems to be a common problem with the iPod shuffle and newer versions of Mac OS X (10.6 and up) and iTunes albeit with somewhat varying symptoms but the same overall problem syncing the iPod with iTunes.
The predominant go-to solution is to give the iPod more power by either connecting the iPod directly to a USB port on the Mac or by disconnecting all other USB devices. On paper this makes sense.
What worked for me, however, was the opposite. After trying to solve this problem for hours (weeks, months), I had success ONLY after adding a low-powered 4-port USB hub to the chain between the iPod and the Mac. I suspect this had the effect of throttling the power supplied to the iPod from the Mac. I was able to perform a restore on the iPod then sync my music over.
I can't tell you much about the USB hub except that it is running at USB 1.1 speeds (12 Mb/sec). In theory a USB 1.1 extension cable should also do the trick. You might even be able to use the USB hub in old wired Apple USB keyboard. I will attach a photo of the hub I used to this post for greater clarity.
    I really hope this helps.

  • TS1369 2nd generations Ipod Shuffle with Windows 8?

How do you get a 2nd generations Ipod Shuffle compatible with Windows 8? (it works on just fine in earlier versions)
If you plug it in through a USB connection it blinks orange/green really really fast. It is not recognized neither by Itunes or Windows (PC), Not recognized nor taking any charge.
I first thought it just came to the end of its life, but then plugging it in with my old laptom (Windows XP) and another laptop (Widows Vista) it worked just fine.
I have the newest version of all my software, so this has to be a driver compatibility issue, the question has Apple solved it yet?

I asked about the USB docking cable because some folks who also have a 3rd or 4th gen shuffle were trying to use the cable from those shuffles with a 2nd gen shuffle.  Or they bought a replacement part that is for the 3rd or 4th gen shuffle.  It fits, but the connector is different, so it does not work.
You have determined that the shuffle and its cable work properly when connected to a different computer.  Since the Windows 8 computer is a new computer that was not used with this shuffle before, the cause could be related to the computer's hardware or software.
As a test, if you have another device that is similar to an iPod, such as a USB flash drive or a mini external hard drive that is powered by the USB port (not something low-power like a mouse or keyboard), connect it to the computer's USB port to confirm the port does generally work for other things.
If the USB port is confirmed to work for other devices, if you have a USB hub, as another test, connect the hub to the USB port.  Perferably, the hub is the type that is self-powered (has its own power supply).  Connect the shuffle to the hub to see if that makes any difference if the hub is between the iPod and the computer.

  • PLEASE IGNORE LAST QUESTION RE:  2nd Generation IPod Shuffle Connection

Let's try that again. I currenty have a 2nd generation ipod shuffle that works on my laptop just fine...most of the time. My roomate, however, is having a lot of problems trying to get her's to work on her desktop pc. I need to know if she can use my laptop with her IPod Shuffle as well. I think she can, I just do not have a clue how to do it. Any help with step by step instruction would be great! Normally I Know just about everything with Windows. This one has me confused. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!

You select one or more songs in the Music library. Then you click-hold-drag the song(s) and drop onto the shuffle under DEVICES. If you don't see the shuffle under DEVICES, click the little triangle to drop down the list.
The easier way to put songs onto the shuffle is create a new Playlist. Name it "shuffle songs" or whatever you want. Put the songs you want on your shuffle into this playlist. Then connect your shuffle, go to the shuffle's pane in iTunes, and click on the Contents tab. At the bottom of that tab is the Autofill controls. Select to +Autofill from+ the playlist you just created and populated. Click the Autofill button to sync.
This is better because you can decide what to put on the shuffle the next time without the shuffle connected, AND when you sync, it's done all at one time, instead a few songs at a time if you do it manually.

  • I lost the original dock to my 2nd generation ipod shuffle, I have a new charger but it doesn't work. How can I charge it?

I lost the original dock to my 2nd generation ipod shuffle, I have a new charger but it doesn't work. How can I charge it?

If by "charger," you mean the USB docking cable, you need the original cable (or a compatible third-party replacement cable).  A cable that is for the current 4th gen (and 3rd gen) shuffle does not work with a 2nd gen shuffle, because the connector is different.
This is the Apple replacement part (for a 2nd gen shuffle)
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA694G/A/apple-ipod-shuffle-dock
There are third-party products that work, but make sure it is described as being for the 2nd gen shuffle.  And I would avoid the ones that just seem too cheap, because there are likely to be quality issues.

  • My 2nd generation iPod Shuffle won't charge or sync in iTunes.

As the title says, my second generation iPod shuffle will not charge when connected to itunes. I ventured to the apple store to seek another connection cable after my first one was lost, but alas, this has no effect. When plugged in, my shuffle stays dormant; it is not regognized in iTunes, and the LED light stays gray. Any Help to this Problem?

  • 2nd generation IPod Shuffle

I am looking for the Windows 64 bit IPod Reset Utility for second generation IPod Shuffle.  My IPodno longer has battery indicator lights and does not show in ITUNES.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is a 64-bit Windows version.  If you know someone with an older Windows PC or any Mac, maybe they can run it for you.  Or, if there is an Apple Store nearby, you can make a reservation at the Genius Bar and have them give it a try.
Does the shuffle still appear in device manager?  If it does not, and it does not charge when connected, the problem is more likely to be with the USB connection.  That would probably mean the USB cable/dock is bad, or the connector (headphone jack) on the shuffle has become faulty.
It could also be the USB port on the computer.  If you have not already, I would try the following.  Shut down (power off) the computer.  Use this procedure to reset the iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1655
Disconnect ALL USB peripherals from the computer, except for standard mouse and keyboard.  Start up computer with shuffle NOT connected.  Run iTunes.  Connect shuffle to a direct USB port on the computer.

  • Newer generations compatible with 2nd generation iPod shuffle?

I Have a iPod shuffle 2nd generation. Are the chargers for the newer generations compatible (3rd, 4th or 5th)?

I returned the shuffle and got a new one. This one
has "light" issues. Sometimes it blinks orange,
sometimes green, sometimes the green light is on,
sometimes the orange light is on and then no light at
all. Also, it has recognition issues but not as
    often.
Please order those issues with some more detail so that we can help you.
I love the shuffle as it is the perfect size for the
gym however, I should have waited to purchase one so
the "bugs" would be worked out.

  • HT1655 i have my 2nd generation ipod shuffle and i have had it for about 2 years now. I have fully charged it and it still wont play. i have tried everything what should i do?

    what should i do?

I don't know what "everything" is, unless you state them, so I have to ask if you did this procedure to reset the iPod shuffle.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1655
If that does not help, is the iPod recognized by iTunes when it is connected to USB?  If so, select the iPod in the iTunes sidebar (under DEVICES).  Over to the right, go to the Settings screen.  There should be a Restore button there.  Restore will erase the iPod, install the latest software, and give it the default settings.  After it completes, load some songs on it and try it again.  Hopefully, it will play now.
If that does not help either, please post back.

  • LOTS OF "WEIRDITIES" WITH 2ND GENERATION IPOD SHUFFLE

It seems that I am not the only one with "blinking and light" issues. I returned my first 2nd Gen shuffle after speaking to an Apple Tech (who had NO CLUE, ADMITTED TO NEVER SEEING THE 2ND GEN). I was experiencing a recognition issue - my Mac would not recognize the shuffle. Itunes would open and it was as if there was no shuffle plugged in. It also made my Mac CRASH like a pc! A window would pop up that stated I needed to restart my computer by holding the "on" button for a few seconds. Yes, I have the most recent version of itunes and I made sure that it was plugged into a port in the computer not the keyboard.
I returned the shuffle and got a new one. This one has "light" issues. Sometimes it blinks orange, sometimes green, sometimes the green light is on, sometimes the orange light is on and then no light at all. Also, it has recognition issues but not as often.
I love the shuffle as it is the perfect size for the gym however, I should have waited to purchase one so the "bugs" would be worked out.

  • While my 2nd Generation iPod Shuffle

was syncing, I made the mistake of trying to delete songs from the the playlist to which it was syncing. Now the orange light blinks and won't stop blinking, and syncing is never completed. Of course, I get the message that the iPod is syncing and not to disconnect it.
    What should I do?
    (iTunes 10.6.3.)

Managed to figure it out, but it took me two hours or more to create a new playlist and sync to it.
I don't mess much with my Shuffle (which is why I really don't know how to use it), but I like to wear it to the pool when I know it's going to be crowded with noisy splashing, sliding, diving kids (like on a day off school such as today). Having it almost full was overkill. I wanted to pare it down to just a couple dozen songs so I get to hear them all during my workout.
    Used Google which found this:
    https://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/shuffle2gen/#
That got me going, eventually. (Pretty much what you said.)
