My 3 goes to white screen on startup and no further. now what?

My iPhone 3 seems to have quit.  When I turn it on all I get is a white screen.  Is there anything I can do?

White screen at startup and stays?? How can I get past this?

Safe Boot is perfoming a disk integrity check and repair process which may take a long time. Let it complete, though if the startup disk requires repair to begin with, it is likely already in a failed state.
If the Mac eventually starts, take that opportunity to back up your important data if you have not already done so. It may be your last.

  • Extended white screen on startup and shutdown?

When I startup, I receive the gray screen with the apple logo and spinning wheel, then the screen turns white and sits for 30-45 seconds before showing me my desktop.  When I shutdown, it pretty much does the same thing.  What could be wrong?  My system still works, but I am concerned about the delays. The issue existed before I upgraded to Lion and still exists.

No solution, I'm afraid, but just to say I seem to have the same problem.
Since installation of Mountain Lion, my iMac no longer starts up properly. It tends (not always, strangely, but about 75% of the time) to stop after a few seconds and leave me with a black screen filled with white text. I believe this is verbose mode or some such. I googled, which led me here and elsewhere, and I phoned AppleCare. Answers were little beyond a PRAM reset. Nothing worked.
My iMac had to go off to repair for a separate incident anyway, so I asked them to look into this too. (The separate incident was truly separate. A faulty optical drive. It turned out Apple had neglected to connect it after dealing with another, serious hardware fault before I'd installed Mountain Lion.) Apple told me that, with regard to the startup problem, there was nothing they could do, loads of people had the same problem and fingers crossed a software update would come along at some point to fix it.
My iMac has to go back again anyway, so I might as well ask them to look into the Mountain Lion issue again, just in the hope they again register the problem and that that might help a fix actually turn up one day. (Apple evidently damaged my iMac taking it apart to deal with the optical drive. It now has white glowing spots and a one-inch streak emanating from behind the screen.) Mountain Lion just seems in line with the evermore nightmarish Apple "experience". I shouldn't have bothered, of course.
(My iMac is 2.5 years old, and I skipped Lion and upgraded from Snow Leopard.)

  • White screen after bootcamp and no further reaction--- HELP

I started bootcamp and used a disk with windows XP professional. i think selected the C partition (it was the only one) and windows started installing. after 20 minutes it ended and said windows wasn't installed and everything went white. can't do anything. the sreen is white and in the middle an icon of a hard disk with the world on top of it is flashing. how can I go back ? ?

    "shows the new partition"
Well the BOOTCAMP volume you create is FAT and the BCA and guide says you need to format that to NTFS: advanced options at the install screen.
you get back to OS X so that is good - otherwise use ''x' on startup or Option key and reset the default Startup Disk.
You didn't burn Windows installer to DVD so no worry of a bad burn.

  • I have a white screen at startup after installing Yosemite. Help!

imac 2011 goes to white screen and black cursor during startup

    Hello Hackdog1,
It sounds like you are unable to boot your Mac after updating to Yosemite  I would recommend you use the troubleshooting in the following article to help resolve the issue:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
Start with these steps, and work your way down the rest of the article if needed:
Disconnect, test peripheral devices and network cables
Note: "Peripheral devices" refers to external devices other than what came with your Mac, such as hard drives, printers, or hubs that you connect via a USB or FireWire cable.
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
Disconnect all peripheral devices such as external hard drives or printers (leave only the display, a keyboard, and mouse connected).
    Disconnect any Ethernet cables.
    Start up your Mac.
If you can start up this way, one or more of your peripheral devices (or installed software related to the device) is probably causing the gray screen issue. Connect one device, then restart your Mac to test for the issue. Repeat the process until you locate the device at issue. Make sure the device is powered if it needs to be to operate correctly. Check with the manufacturer of the device for support or possible software driver or firmware updates that may be available for the device. Try a different cable with the device if possible (such as a different USB or FireWire cable).
Note: If you have multiple peripheral devices and the issue only occurs when they are all connected, but not when each device is the only peripheral connected, see the Additional Information section below.
If you are using a desktop Mac with a third-party keyboard and/or mouse device, and the issue still occurs, try starting up with an Apple keyboard and mouse connected instead. Try starting with no keyboard and mouse connected, then connect them after start up. Also, try a different USB port on your Mac.
If the gray screen issue persists with no devices connected, go to the next section (with the peripherals still disconnected).
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • Help with white screen on startup PLEASE!

My new imac is only showing a white screen on startup. I am not really confortable with mac's yet to start trying a bunch of different things, I did try a restart where you press four buttons (p and r restart I think).
I made an appt. tomorrow for the mac store. My question to you is, is this a hard drive issue. I have read a little that others have had this problem...did you loose everything on your hard drive?
    Thanks guys,
    Michelle

To add to the conversation, my iMac has decided not to start up any further than the grey screen with apple logo and scrolling symbol. I haven't a clue what to do with it!
I tried doing a safe boot but that didn't work. I then tried to access the disk utility repair but i upgraded the operating system on my comp to tiger so i don't know if i should be using that cd or the one that came with my computer thus old operating system.
If anyone could shed any light on this i'd be most gratefull.. i hear reports of needing a replacement hard drive.... nooooooooooooo

  • MacBook Pro starts then the apple logo comes up and it looks like it want to continue then a white screen comes up and stays

I purchased a refurbished MacBook Pro  (MACBOOK PRO APPLE MD385LL/A)
I did go to newegg and purchase / install 16 GB of RAM
It worked fine for the first week or so, now   I shut down  and when I restart  - it starts  - then the apple logo comes up and it looks like it wants to continue   - then a white screen comes up and stays.
    This just started.
I got this fix from on line
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Macbook if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
It works most of the time   How do I fix this permanently?

Can you try putting in the old RAM to see if the problem persists?

My iMacG5 will only boot to white screen, gray apple and spinning gear. Help?
Also not totally sure if it's an Intel based computer, but that's what I recall. Any way to check, since I can't get to About This Mac window?
It's running on OSX Leopard 10.5.4
First symptom = running slowly - then it kind of froze with color wheel spinning - thought a forced shut down would help - help power button til off, then white screen, gray apple and spinning gear.
    Have tried...
    1. Turn off the computer by choosing Shut Down from the Apple menu, or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
    2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    3. Wait 10 seconds.
    4. Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
    5. Let go of the power button.
    6. Press the power button once more to start up your iMac.
Then try booting from your install disc again.
    - No change
    And...
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
      1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo
          appears.
      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
    - The fan just got louder.
    Thanks for your help.

You need to do an Erase and Install or an Archive and Install depending on whether the hard drive is OK or needs to be reformatted.
Start by booting from your Leopard DVD. The rest is just following directions.
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
