My 3rd gen/ my wifes and windows

Not sure how much of this is important.
I have had my IPod since Feb. It was working normally the last time I synced. My wife got one last week, has a seperate windows loging and apple id. I tried to sync today and two things happend.
1. It reconized the ipod as a drive, instead of loading i-tunes like normal.
2. When I manually started I-tunes I got the message " the software required for communicating with the ipod is not installed correctly. Please re-install Itunes to install the IPods software."
Why is this happening and what can I do?

Well start with these articles and see if that gets you anywhere...

  • 3rd Gen Nano connects and then QUICKLEY disconnects on an XP machine

Below are two postings I made in a different discussion area. The 30g iPod is now working fine, the Nano is as stated in the second post. Please to help me out? As stated below Apple says it works and it does on the wrong machine! As many of you out there know, sometimes a husbands and a wifes taste in music are different. I would like to keep my music on my machine. Thanks, reo52............
I have been running very well with my 30g Video iPod. I got an 8g nano as an award. I had just upgraded iTunes, tried hooking the nano up and now nothing works! iTunes never did find the nano. Did the r,r,r,r,r thing but could only reset because iTunes can not see the nano. Later I was syncing the 30g and was ejecting it and got a message stating it could not be ejected as there are files on it being used by another program. Did the 5R's on he 30g, the unit was syncing and the battery went low and interrupted the sync. Now iTunes can't see the 30g or the 8g. I did a reinstall of iTunes and still nothing. This is driving me to drink, HELP if you can. Thanks, reo52.............
Well, I sent the Nano in, it came back, Apple found no problems with it. When trying to sync it acted as before. With Apple on the phone I tried syncing to my wifes machine!?? I'll be dammed it synced right up!???! Well Apples says it works because it works on my wifes machine!! Well, why wont it work on my PC?!!. Both machines are running up to date iTunes, both have the same firewalls and virus programs and both are running XP with all service packs and updates installed. Now I can work around this for awhile but I have got to get that Nano to sync with my machine. Help if you can and Thanks again, reo52

    To Apple,
822 unresolved problems in "Connecting 3rd Gen Nano to a Windows Machine" , 25-50% on each page are problems with connecting a Nano in Windows and getting it recognized in Windows or iTunes or syncing errors(1st 5 pages). I think this qualifies as a serious problem. Many state that their Nano works on a different Windows machines and or an Apple machine, but not the one they use. Others and myself have sent their Nanos beck and Apple. Apple states "unit works fine, can not reproduce problem, or words to that effect" then Apple sends it back! It still will not work for the customer. So who has the problem? Owners who can not use their Nano? Apple who has the owners cash but maybe not their goodwill? I do not know, but I can see a Customer satisfaction problem developing. So APPLE please do your best to resolve this situation. It could be to your own advantage and help with those 822 unresolved problems on the Nano Pages. Thanks, reo52

  • I downloaded a recommended update and since then my ipod touch (3rd gen) is frozen and wont turn on (1604 error)

I downloaded a recommended update and since then my ipod touch (3rd gen) is frozen and will not turn on. I try restoring factory settings but the process terminates with a 1604 error. I have researched this problem on the net and think i have tried everything, but still no joy. I have tried removing all apple and itunes software and reinstalling, updating the apple drivers - nothing has worked. I am using itunes 10.3 on my pc, windows xp.
If anyone can help me i would be extremely grateful - I am off on holiday on thursday and would love to have my ipod with me!
    Many thanks in advance.
    Craig.

Error 1604: This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, uninstalling and reinstalling USB ports, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections, device not recognized properly, computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device). If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for error 1604.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while iPhone remains connected.
iPhone should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.

I have a 3rd gen iPod touch and I downloaded the most recent itunes, ever since I did, only the first song syncs to the ipod. As soon as it gets to the second, it still says its syncing. However, nothing happens. How do I fix this? I have restored and updated the ipod. I have the new iTunes. I have restarted my computer checked the connection and everything.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

All other things being equal 4-cores are twice as fast as 2-cores. This is regardless of what you are doing. The only way a 2-core processor would be as fast is if it were run at twice the clock speed. But the 2-core CPU is only clocked around 10% or so faster. Now, for all that you claim you will be doing the relevant question is do you need 4-cores. My answer is that you don't. But the 2-core machine will be slower - all things being equal.
Iris is a far better GPU than HD4 or 5000. But not as fast as a discreet GPU with better performance measures. Again, you don't really need high-power GPU. Iris should meet your needs adequately for now.
But remember you want to keep the computer for 6 or 7 years. No one knows what your needs will be then. You may find whatever you buy today that meets today's needs will be inadequate for tomorrow's.
Your comments on graphics pretty much confirm the majority of what I've been reading on other sites.
The conflict is with cores. About half the people are saying for low CPU intensive tasks 4 cores are totally unnecessary, while the other half says they'll make things faster no what the task (one thing all seem to have in common is they're totally against the 2014s).
So it seems I'm left with the decision between faster performance vs better graphics.
    I appreciate your input.

  • From Mac to PC. 3rd gen.iPod shows in Windows and not in iTunes

    3rd Generation iPod version 2.3
Installing on a PC using Windows XP Home Edition
My son gave me his old iPod having just bought the newest version. I already own an iPod shuffle and have not had any difficulties. I would mention however that my son used the iPod with his Mac computer.
My difficulty is that the iPod shows up in Windows and not in iTunes. I just cannot get iTunes to recognize this iPod.
On the settings on the iPod it states my name, the format is Windows and funnily enough all my playlists have been downloaded but not the tunes.
I have uninstalled the iPod shuffle and uninstalled, reinstalled the software registering the new iPod to me and have gone through all the points mentioned on the Apple site on http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716 many times.
Because I kept getting the balloon “One of the USB Devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it” (Even though it appeared in Disk Drives in Device Manager) I have bought and installed a USB 2.0 port PCI card. I really thought this would be the answer. However the usual balloons came up the first time (after having uninstalled and reinstalled the software yet again). The balloons stated that the hardware device has been installed and ready to use. However nothing appears in iTunes. Upon reconnecting the iPod again in whatever port I am still getting the balloon message “USB device attached to this computer has malfunctioned……………………..” All the USB port function properly with other devices (including the iPod shuffle when the software is uninstalled and installed again giving the shuffles details) and on the Device Manager windows they show as working properly. Still on the iPod “do not disconnect” and nothing on the window in iTunes and everytime I plug it in the same old notice comes up.
Any ideas of a solution would be greatly appreciated.

No reply from this discussion group but if this helps anyone else it would be good.
I reformated iPod by right clicking on disk in My Computer and clicking format.
After many different notices when trying to open I went to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304996 and followed the instructions.
The problem was solved and my iPod now appears in iTunes and I am able to sync.

  • I am unable to connect my 3rd gen iPod to my Windows 7 Laptop or iTunes

Once again, Apple support Communities creates a new question instead of letting me search within iPod touch for my own research.
For the past six months I have been unable to sync my iPod to iTunes.
The 3rd Gen iPod Touch will not connect to Windows 7 and not recognized by iTunes 11.1.1.11.
I have data/info on my iPod that I prefer not to compromise by doing a hard reset.
I have confirmed that my iPod nano does sync with iTunes on my Win7 Machine. So I'm pretty certain my cable is working ok.
I've heard that I can somehow sync via wifi, but I'm still not sure if that means I can backup my Notes, Contacts and other data without the use of applications like MS Office/Outlook etc.
Thankfully, or detrimentally, I've been able to go for the last few years without changing the 10k songs on my iPod touch. But over the last six months, I've finally started getting bored with the existing songs. Hence the need to solve the non-syncing issue. And I don't like going blindly forward without a backup. My battery and home button have become glitchy and I'm concerned I may lose the unit completely one day soon.
If anyone reading this has any experience with a similar issue, or could offer advice, workaround, or solution, I would be greatly appreciative. And I hope to assist others as I learn more through solving my Apple issues.
    Thanks,
    Ryan

    The Ipod works fine.
Battery charges regularly with the occasional glitch.
    Running iTunes 11.1.1.11
I figured a Nano would probably connect in a simpler way than the touch, but only have a couple computers and cables to test.
I've reinstalled iTunes, but not the full suite, and not all traces. I will attempt this, but I suspect its related to my touch. I was able to connect other iphones to my itunes without issue, using the same cable.

  • I have an iPod touch 32gb 3rd gen (model A1318) and am unable to update it to iOS5.  When I try, I have to update iTunes first, and when I do that, it will no longer recognize my iPod (so I can't update the iOS).  Help?

If it matters, I'm using a PC that's still running Windows XP, but this isn't my first rodeo, and I know both how to use the software and what applications are and aren't compatible with my computer.
I searched the web for answers, most of which amounted to a shrug and a "Meh."  I called Apple support, who took a couple days to look into it, then had a supervisor call me back.  His response, essentially, was a shrug and a "meh."  So I'm kinda stuck.  Any help you folks could give me would be much appreciated.
In addition, I've been reading a fair amount on how iOS 5 will cause a whole host of problems with the 32gb 3rd gen touch... is this true?  And has Apple resolved it, or are they essentially force-retiring this model?

    Dear Re_trace,
Don't you feel cheated and conned by this product. I am 50 years old and from what you write I can see you know a lot more about your computer than I do about mine. Additionally I live in southern Africa (in fact I live in one and work in another, neither of which appear on the drop down list when you start looking at asking Apple directly for help) and feel they shouldn't allow people to sell their products here (I bought it in a shop that sells i-Macs etc. - not off a guy on a street corner!)if they can't offer support.
I have just been going from error code to another, losing my music that took me hours and hours to install and catalogue/modify in the library etc. and now I've had enough of it.
Essentially it seems to me we have bought faulty products, and made Apple richer than Microsoft in the process.
I'm turningmy back on this bloody iPod Touch, giving it to my son to see if he has the ability and interest to get it working, and if he hasn't I'm just goinbg to have to sell it to a sucker who also wants to buy into the dream, until he wakes up to the reality of shoddy product. hours in front of a computer screen, a fortune in downloads (here I only have about 5 to 10 kb per second download speed), trawling the internet looking for people than have also suffered at the hands of an obviously fatally-flawed system.where every time Apple just recommends to install the latest version of iTunes.
I for one would rather have my money and my wasted time back............
I know I didn't help, but really I don't have any axe to grind against Apple, it's just that the hype in no way lives up to the reality. Look at all the people begging for anwers to their problems on this web-site! I know the shop in Mozambique won't give me my money back, but Apple should, and if Ford sold cars as reliable as these iPods, they'd be banned from selling them........
Or am I just too old to realie how exciting it is internettingf all over th eplace to try to fix what is actually an inferior Walkman........
Good luck solving your problem, and I hope you think that all the effort you are putting in (and which I have now given up putting in), is worth it.
    Hope you solve ht eproblems!

i have an iPod 3rd Gen 10gb. I use firewire to connect it to my iPod. When i connect it, it shows that it is charging but that is all. my computer won't recognize it at all. i tried a new cable, a new firewire card, i bought a USB cable, reinstalling iPod software and iTunes, the 4 R's obviously not restoring cuz it wont connect. i basically tried everything but no luck. any help would be appreciated.

Do you use iTunes 7? If so please read the Topic I posted. Apperently I got the same problem with a new Nano. I discovered that when you attach the iPod DURING a Windows XP reboot it WILL WORK and see the iPod ...... until you disconnect again.

  • 3rd gen battery replacement and life after

After 3 years, the battery on my 20GB 3rd Gen iPod is finally failing. I'm stuck between sending it in for battery replacement or just buying a new iPod.
For those of you who have sent in a 3rd gen for replacement--how was your experience with the replacement iPod? Did you get the same 3-4 years generally expected from the model, or did it deteriorate faster? Is it worth the $65 , or should I just suck it up and spend more on a brand new iPod?
20GB 3rd Gen iPod   Windows XP

By all means replace it! The 3G is a great device if what you want to do is play music!
Yes, if you do it yourself and fail to follow the instructions by popping the right side first, you can and will rip the ribbon cale to the headphones. But that's why one should follow instructions or have a pro do it
Should you send it in to Apple for the $65 job? That's up to you. There are 3rd party folks who will do it for less or will use a better battery. I replaced my own with a higher capacity battery, and have wonderful play time. One company I've dealt with is iPodResQ. I'm not making any money from this recommendation, just voicing my approval of the quality and price of their parts and services.
Look around, google 3G iPod battery replacement, read the instructions. If you feel uncomfortable with them, then get a pro to do it.
I've has several folks want to buy my 3G from me because of its distinctive appearance. Seems it's already "retro", and therefore cool. So why ditch it because of the battery? If that's the only reason you are thinking of replacing it, then don't. Benefits of the 3G include the fact that Dynamic playlists still work on them, unlike newer models that traded that function for the benefit of podcasting. That alone is enough for me to keep mine.
For the record, I own a 15GB 3G that is my go everywhere workhorse, and a 40GB 4G that goes with me on trips with most of my library. I like the 3G more.
