My 5th Gen. iPod won't charge

I recently got my iPod replaced when the screen was cracked. So I got a brand new one and a yesterday it wouldn't charge. It worked fine for about a month. I didn't get a new cable, I kept the one I had that worked fine. I plug it in and it just won't charge. I tried other sources like my iPod speaker that also worked fine before. It even plays music through it, which means I know it's connected, but it's not charging! I really do not think that it's the cables. Please help!

- See:
iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
- Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
- Try another charging source
- Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
- Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

My 32GB 5th gen iPod won't sync. There is still over 10 GB free and my itunes is only 17 GB yet it won't let me sync anything. Can anyone help?

My ipod 32gb 5th gen will not sync to itunes or any mac computer. An error message appears saying that my ipod touch requires itunes ver10.7. Does anyone know how to get this on my ipod touch 5? I cannot find it, does it need to be installed onto my ipod from a computer?

  • 5th gen iPod won't show iTunes U

using an iTune 10 (latest update), and synching with the 5th gen iPod. The synch goes well and when connected to the iTunes i can see the iTunes U on the list but when I disconnect and I can't find iTunes U on the iPod lists and menus... I read in a related post (about 5th gen iPod nano) a reply asking if the guy had set the files to have the 'iTunes U' mediatype. What does it mean and how do I do that?

Have you set the files to have the 'iTunes U' mediatype?

  • IPod 5th gen 30gig won't charge and isn't recognized by iTunes

I recently replaced the battery in my iPod 5th gen because I thought that was the problem.  This fixed things temporaly and my iPod turned on for this first time in a long time.  However, now it won't charge or hook up to the computer.  I think this may have been the problem all along.
The charging port seems to be in good condition and pretty clean.  I have tried resetting it and resetting it while connected to itunes.  I also disconnected and reconnected the new battery.  I left it plugged in for sometime but it hasn't charged.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.  I really have no idea what the problem is at this point.
    Thanks

I suspect that you have a completely dead battery.
i got this ipod about a year ago
If you mean 11 months, a battery replacement is under warranty but $30 shipping and handling. If you mean 13 months, a battery replacement is $59 + $7 shipping.

  • 5th gen ipod won't connect to usb 3, is there a fix?

I have an ipod video (5th gen), and it won't connect to my new asus laptop since it only has usb 3 ports (I don't care if it will charge or not, I have a dock), my question is whether it could potentially connect to my computer so I could sync it if I use a usb 2 hub or something similar. My ipod recently formatted itself when it forced a reset, so I have to get my music all back. Anyone know a fix to it? Thanks for any help you guys can give me, really driving me crazy not having music to listen to when I'm out...

You did install the latest version of iTunes on your new computer, correct?  Installing iTunes is how the software needed for iPods to be recognized as iPod gets installed.  Otherwise, Windows sees it as a generic device.

If the iPod is recognized by Windows, but not iTunes, you should go through this trouble-shooting document.

FYI - My 3rd gen iPod from 2003 works fine with the latest iTunes; there's no such thing as an iPod that is too old.

  • 5th Gen ipod won't sync a video podcast

    I have a 80GB iPod, only a month and a half old, 5th Gen.
Thing is, I downloaded 5 video podcasts today, all from the same author.
One of these podcasts WILL sync onto my iPod, however the other four won't, saying that the video format isn't supported, when all five videos have the same format and type.
I have tried everything from renaming them to converting them and still nothing works.
    Can anyone please help? :]

I am having the same problem. The difference is that mine was syncing and then suddenly it won't sync anymore. Hope someone answers your question.

  • 3rd Gen iPod won't charge with USB connector - Is that normal?

I have the above iPod, and I noticed that when I tried to plug it in to charge it with a newer USB connector it will not charge. It will however, let me update my iTunes music. Is this normal for an older iPod?

I believe that is correct. That iPod was often called the iPod with 'dock connector', and as this chart shows, won't charge via USB.

  • New battery in 5th gen ipod not holding charge

I just installed a new hard drive and a new battery in my ipod.
The drive is a MK6008GAH from a samsung Q1 Ultra, so claims the ebay seller. The ipod switches on, displays the black screen with apple logo then just the sad ipod screen. I've tried leaving it to charge overnight but it makes no difference.
I've been trying to put it into disk mode, I suceeded once, connected the ipod to my computer but the ipod froze before the computer recognised it. Any ideas what might be wrong? Perhaps a dud harddrive?

I just had a similar problem with my brand new (bought yesterday) 60GB. At "apparently random" points, iTunes would just Unexpectedly Quit. I ended up syncing and stopping at every letter of the alphabet until all songs were copied. I never had this trouble with my 1st Gen iPod.

  • 5th Gen iPods won't sync

my 60 & 80 gig iPods won't sync to iTunes. When I connect them, they appear in iTunes, but I cannot add or delete music and several of the playlists don't show up on the iPod. My newer 120 gig iPods work fine. This started on 8-8-10. I am running the current version of iTunes.

I've been having the same problem ever since I upgraded to iTunes 9. Before the update I never had any issues syncing new songs or playlists. I have purchased several new albums and haven't been able to get them synced to my iPod. When I plug in my iPod I get the syncing message and the "Do Not Disconnect" message shows up on my iPod for about 30 seconds to a minute, but when it finishes nothing has been added and the storage amounts haven't changed.

  • 5th gen iPod won't sync with iTunes

I have recently upgraded my iTunes to version 8. Now my iPod won't mount. I get the following error when I plug in the iPod: "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes." I've restored at least 6 times and nothing. I have also downgraded to the previous version of iTunes and it still won't work. Please help me. Right now I have a 30Gb lump of coal sitting in my desk. (The restore obviously removed all my music for it.)

Have you had a chance to look at this troubleshooting page? If not, have a look at the bottom section that covers what to try if the message keeps reappearing: iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode - Use iTunes to restore
Towards the end it says "If after restoring your iPod, the message described above reappears, the iPod drive letter may need to be reassigned. See the "Change the Drive Letter" section of this document for steps to assign a different drive letter" which contains a link to this article: Windows confuses iPod with network drive and iTunes may exhibit strange behavior in relation to the iPod.

  • 5th Gen IPOD - Won't Sync and Not Seen by Windows

    Help!!!
Tried the 5 R's. I have the IPOD in Disk Mode but whilst it will happily charge, it still is not seen by ITunes or Windows Explorer (though is visible inDisk Defragmenter). I have already un-installed and re-installed ITunes etc.
Prior to putting it into Disk Mode the IPOD still had my library on it and owuld happily work.

Have you had a chance to look at these troubleshooting pages? They may be of some help:

  • 5th Gen iPod won't sync using new iTunes and new Firmware

I updated the iTunes software and firmware for my iPod, and I was excited about how cool it looked. Unfortunately, it doesn't work. It synchronized once. Since then, it hasn't worked. iTunes just freezes up and the "Do Not Disconnect Screen" never goes away. It will just sit there for hours doing nothing and telling me that it is updating, when it fact it is doing nothing. I have even gone through all of the steps of reseting, re-installing, and reformatting it. It still won't sync, but now I have the pleasure of having a 6-month old 60 gig blank hard drive. Has anyone else experienced syncing problems? Any ideas on how I can get this to work again?

I am having the same problem. The difference is that mine was syncing and then suddenly it won't sync anymore. Hope someone answers your question.

  • 5th Gen Ipod won't start after setting for a day...

If I let my Ipod sit for more than a day or two after turning it off it will not start up but keeps displaying the folder icon with the support URL.
I try to reset it but it will not reset, it just keeps starting up and displaying the folder and then turns off.
The only way to get it to work is to plug it into an external charger (not my PC) and then it starts up OK.
Does anybody have any ideas as to why this is doing this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike
