My 720p project is compressing to 702p

Hi, I have a 720p project in FCP X and every pixel matters as it's a screen capture so it needs to be totally visible edge to edge on the export.
When I export to compressor from FCP X I do so with a 720p preset but when it's done the dimensions appear 1248x702 instead of 1280x720 thus it is cutting bits of the image off around all four sides. How can I fix this??!!
Many thanks

I've long had an incomplete understanding this, but I'll give it a shot.
The file you produced is  really 1280X720. But Quick Time crops it in its display…apparently to avoid showing any edge artifacts.
If you open it in QTX, and hit Command-i it will report 1248X702 (Actual).
And if you open in QT7, depending on what settings you elect, you may also get 1248X702…or 1280X720. The settings, BTW are in Window>Movie Properties.
Here is a document that explains the QT display settings and differences.
Although QTX defaults to the crop display, QT7 will display what you're looking for if Aperture Conform  is set to Production.
As a practical matter – uploading to YT or Vimeo – I don't think it makes any difference. I've never noticed any cropping after uploading,
Hope this is helpful.

  • Seeing jagged lines on external monitor in 720P project???

I just a purchased a Panasonic BTLH1700 to use as a braodcast monitor with Final Cut Pro 6 and even though the monitor and my FCP project are 720p mode, I'm still seeing jagged lines. I thought that was usually a 480i issue.
When you're working in a 720p project, should you be seeing jagged lines as in interlacing on the Panasonic LH1700???
Please help. Thanks very much in advance,
    - Nicholas
PS: The monitor is connected to my computer via component cables and a BlackMagic HD Pro card. Should I be looking instead at Matrox MXO??? I also used the SDI port and still have jagged lines on the external monitor.

    Hi Shane,
Thanks very much for your help. As far as I know, no, there is no downconversion occurring. I went into the Blackmagic settings in general systems preferences, and there is no downconversion selected.
So I don't know what's causing this. But would I be better off if I sold my BlackMagic HD Pro card and instead purchased a Matrox MXO? I've heard a lot of good things about it.

  • Screen captures for a 720p project?

What is the best way to take screen captures/grabs and prepare them for being placed in a 720p project?
    Thanks.

    1. Any idea what determines the resolution of the screen shot?
Usually the dimensions of the monitor, but you changed it and it still took it at 1920x1200...so you got me.
    2. What would I do if I want to bring in screen captures into a 1080p project and I want to do zooms and pans on these images
Make the dimensions larger than 1920x1080. You can do that in Photoshop. At least twice the size. Photoshop does a better upscale than FCP when it comes to stills.
how can I take a higher resolution version of these screen captures?
    No idea.

  • Trying to create PAL SD DVD from 23.98fps 720P project

I'm trying to create a PAL DVD from a HDV 23.98fps 720P project and am having a few issues. All the footage is PAL and I am converting it to an SD file as it is for an SD DVD however exporting through FCP gives me black frames, using DVD studio pro to convert gives me a freeze frame effect (both of which I assume is through converting 23.98 to 25 fps) so I was told to use Compressor. I tried this but can only seem to render out a 23.98fps file as NTSC, whenever I switch it to PAL it automatically changes to 25fps as my only option.
Any help would be much appreciated as my deadline is looming.

    Hi:
Are you sure that your footage is PAL 23.98 fps? I'm not involved with HDV but that sounds like NTSC frames.
What is the source of that footage?
    Hope that helps !

  • OOPS..... Editing a 720p project... now client wants SD instead... Help?

OOPS..... Editing a 720p project... now client wants SD instead... Help?
    Hi all,
I am fairly new into the HD edit paradigm. We shot a project in hd 720p to output as a 13 minute HD corporate video. Now my client wants a SD DVD instead. I have already edited the elaborate 13 minute piece in a 720p sequence (Complete with actors, green screen keying, animations from After Effects, and Titles generated in FCP.... yikes.
How can I change the sequence to SD? If I make the straight change in the sequence settings, every image and clip gets short and pudgy. Any pointers how to make this change-over as smoothly as possible?
    Thanks a bunch.

    No... yes... well...
To MY eyes, I like the smoothness that the bitrate used in the 90minute uses. Again, to me, the 60 seems a bit too harsh.
Of course I formed this opinion on older DVD players and TVs -- but I still stand by it.

  • DVD from 720p project

I have a 1280 x 720 HD project (ProRes 422) and need to export for SD DVD in 16x9 letterbox. What work flow will yield best quality in the correct aspect ratio?
My sequence settings: HDTV 720p 16x9 preset; ProRes 422 codec; square pixels; no field dominance.
Have tried various settings but I always get a distorted movie with the wrong aspect ratio. Please help.

16:9 letterbox is a little unclear. Do you mean a 4:3 frame that contains a letterboxed image, or a 16:9 widescreen image?
The widescreen or letterbox display is determined in up the DVD authoring application. You set this in DVD Studio Pro.

  • Using 4/3 clips in a 16/9 HDV 720p project

    Hi everyone.
I am trying to make and iMovie project which combines photos and movies.
Since my TV, MacBookPro aso. are widescreen, and more or less HD, I chose a 720p widescreen format (which has to be HDV for iMovie)
    Photos look great.
Themes look great, using photos or clips.
However, I have shot all my clips in SD (and very average quality) 640*480, which is 4/3 aspect ratio.(shot with a Sanyo Xacti C5, they are MPEG 4 part 2)
When I use the clips in iMovie without themes, I have black bars on the right and left.
That is expected, but I cannot zoom and crop the top and bottom of the clips.
And I have not been able to find an iMovie plug-in that does it, and works on an Intel Mac.
I do not even know if an iMovie plug-in would be the best solution, since it seems that effects can only be applied to 10 seconds of movie at most.
I thought about exporting the bunch of clips using compressor (I have Final Cut Studio, but am not a pro do not want to get into sàmething complex this time, and I like iMovie's themes), but I have over 200 clips for 2Go, a quite small and full internal hard drive and really like the convenience of keeping the clips in iPhoto.
Any suggestions ? Thanks in advance.

How it displays on a television set depends on the playback device not the application. How are you planning on putting this on a television set?
If you edit your material in an anamorphic sequence that will give you correct widescreen material with pillarboxed 4:3 material. Or you can edit in a 4:3 sequence which will give you letterboxed widescreen material and 4:3 material that fills the screen. Which you do depends on how you are going to show this on a TV. If you're going to make a DVD for instance, the DVD player will control how the media is displayed.

  • 720p project renders as 4:3 quicktime

    Hey all,
So I have a 720p timeline (HDTV 720p preset) and when I go to export movie using compressor, I choose web download H264 800kbs - The resulting video is full frame (?!)
How do I render out compressed, 16:9 video clips from my 720p timeline at the highest possible resolution w/o being HD. I'm just looking for something nice and clear but playable on an average computer. HD video playback on some machines is tough, and the video stutters.
    Thanks!

There are geometric settings within the compressor setting that you are using, but that's for the compressor forum!
My work flow would be to export that sequence as a self contained QT from FCP at original sequence settings Then, If you're looking for the greatest "all around" compatibility, I would use flip4mac to make a 16:9 .wmv file, or use compressor to make a mpeg-1 file. If you use compressor to make the mpeg, make sure to check letterbox if you're going to use a 4:3 size.
Give it a try. Let us know.

  • Best way to export a 720p project to a 1080 file for film festival

I have a 4 year long project, in FCP7, with a 720/24 timeline. Most footage was shot 720, though some later was shot 1080... the film is complete, and now has been accepted into film festivals. (YAY!) Now I need to create a 1080/24 Pro Res file for a festival screener.
What is the BEST way to create that file?
Right now FCP 7 is chugging away in the background as I tried Export->QuickTime Movie and selected the desired codec, and checked recompress all frames and make movie self contained.
    Is this the best way?
And, I need to FedEx this out tonight... :-)
Thanks in advance for your help...

No.  Don't recompress...that adds a layer of compression.  Simply export a QT movie...self contained, using the sequence settings. And then use Compressor to resize it to 1080.

  • Corrupt projects not compressing correctly

Anybody else having this problem. I edit my video, everything is fine in the editor. Looks great. When I export ("share") in FCPX or send to compressor, regardless of format, the outputed file (422, mp4m etc.) is messed up. It doesn not look like what is in FCPX. One video went to black after a half hour. The audio is fine, the image just turns to a black screen 30 minutes in. I took some advice on this forum, turned my edit into a compound clip and copy pasted it into a new project. Fixed.
The other video compressed fine with one setting but with another it got stuck on the title screen for the whole video (audio was fine again).
    Just started a week ago.

Suggest that you try deleting your render files in FCPX and re-render the project, if you are still having issues export a self contained rather than by ref.
let us know how you go.

  • Downconverting 1080 material for use in a 720p project

One of the DP's on a current project that has so far been shot entirely at 720p 60 (on the panasonic varicam) wants to shoot some material with the Sony CineAlta 350. First I told him that I didn't want to mix formats and he said the Sony shot 720. When I challeneged him on that, he said he didn't realize we were shooting 720. He's shot 2 days already of stuff for us at 720. Doesn't exactly fill me with confidence. If we shoot with the Sony CineAlta 350, how does the quality compare to the varicam 720 and will the downconvert to 720 cause problems?
    Thanks as always.

Whoops, I misread your message earlier. Sorry!

  • Dropped frames on 720p projects, but 1080i projects are fine.

This is an ongoing problem that I really need to address. Using the new JVC 700 camera that shoots in native QT files. All seems fine. Started shooting in 720p 60 and having major problems dropping frames during playback. If I turn the warning off, video freezes and cursor continues. Turn warning on, and playback stops. So I said screw it and tried going back to 1081i. No problems at all. Doesn't matter if I shoot in 1920 x 1080 or 1440 x 1080. No problems. But, 720p sequences will simply not work. I have a fast enough system. Sonnet drives, Kona 3, fast machine. My sequence settings and clip settings match in both cases. I seem to be doing everything right but I am stumped. it has to be a setting but I have no idea what I have done wrong. You guys are the best, there has to be a simple answer.
    Best,
    Tom

I am revisiting this issue. I really need to find out what the problem is. I can play 1080i all day long without a dropped frame but try to play a 720p sequence and dropped frames every 10 seconds or so. If I am laying a sequence back to tape or back to DVD, this is a major problem. Like I said, If I drop the frame rate to half, the dropped frames stops. But once I go back to full or dynamic...dropped frames! There has to be an answer to this. I need the assistance of the experienced. Please help.

  • Best workflow for Varicam 720P project

Just shot a feature on 2 Varicams and will be using FCP Studio 2 (FCP) to edit our rough cut. The rough will be taken to a post house for final cut, color grading and effects.
We are bringing our footage from both cameras and a seperate audio source into FCP via a 1400 deck with firewire. (The audio is capture direct from Flash Cards)
Should we edit DVCPro HD or go with Apple ProRes? Is there another workflow example that I should be following or consider?
I'm 6 months in with FCP, coming from Media 100 and some AVID work. So FCP is still pretty new to me. Once I have a proper workflow with settings, etc I'm sure I'll be semi-okay with getting a rough cut completed...... I really want to avoid future issues or quality loss.
    Thanks in advance. Jason

Capture and edit DVCPRO HD. Going ProRes doesn't get you anything other than larger file sizes. I work on History Channel shows and Discovery shows and we edit DVCPRO HD native, color correct DVCPRO HD, and then output to HDCAM and D5. Flawless workflow.

  • Is it possible to do batch compression of projects?

I often need to compress anywhere from 15 - 60 short (1min) projects in a single sitting. (individual athletes ski racing runs) It's a bit painful to repeat the compression one at a time, over and over. Is anyone aware of a method or application that would take a group of projects and compress them in batch form and keep the titles of each project?
    Thanks,

    Automator.
iMovie doesn't have any support but QuickTime does.
You can drag a folder full of .mov files onto an Automator "droplet" and just let it run.
Other file formats are also supported but AVCHD files would need iMovie first (for the import).
