MY 8 month old might have corrupted my ipod.  HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My 8 month old son corroded my USB cable by chewing on the ipod connector. Not realizing this, I come in, plug in my ipod, and get an error that the USB cable is corrupted. I unplug ipod and look at the cable. The part that goes into the ipod is green and crusty...definitely corroded. SO, i go buy a new cable: Dynex dock cable from Best Buy. Just plugged it in, and nothing happened, except my pc is charging my ipod. But no communication from the computer to the ipod. Nothing in windows, or itunes. My ipod still works fine in any other playback dock, it just doesn't allow data transfers from pc to ipod. HELP!!! Is my ipod f'd???????

If you dare you could try cleaning the connector on the ipod - I would try some denatured alcohol on a tiny bit of clean cloth over the end of a really small screwdriver or knife. Carefully wipe both sides of the male connector blade that you can see in the connector port.
You could also try simply plugging /unplugging the cable many times - the wiping action may clean the crud off. Blow on the connectors or use compressed air while you are doing it for good measure.
If you are near an Apple store you could take it to them and have them try it with an Apple brand cable - that may have a better chance of making good contact.
Good luck. I knew baby spit was nasty but I didn't think it was actually corrosive!

The warranty of an iPhone is only valid in the country where it has been bought. You'll have to bring it back to the USA to get it serviced, Apple does not accept international shipments. Any Authorized Apple Service Provider or Apple Store outside the USA will not service your phone, sorry.

  • Two months old & It won't start anymore-HELP!

I will try to not vent as much as possible. As soon as I followed the most recent software update prompt, my computer WILL NOT START. At all. Just the terror-inducing flashing file folder icon with the big question mark in it. Anyone else victim? Any successful defeat strategies?
Tech support has not helped me, though I am within the 90 days and have called three times. Every possible iota of information furnished by these bruised-fruit peddlers has been followed, but to no avail.
There is absolutely NO way that I could in good conscience recommend that anyone buy the MacBook. At least not the black one with a whole lot of memory. A completely heinous experience since taking it out of the box-this is only the most egregious episode in the past two weeks.
Booooo, Apple! Boooo, Steve! A pox be upon Apple.

What has Apple had you try so far? Sounds like you have a serious hard drive issue, in which case, Apple could just send you a new one.

  • No red focus confirmation light on my 3 month old 60D. Checked customs functions, HELP

Hi guys. Title pretty much says it all. Picked my 60D up today and noticed that it will focus (I get the beep), but no focus confirmation (the red square) through the viewfinder. I have tripled checked all settings, cleared custom functions, made sure my CfN III was set to 0 or ON. I'm in one shot mode, using autofocus. PLEASE HELP! Is there a such thing as AF-OFF? I saw this mentioned elsewhere but not on my 60D menus. The photos seem sharp and in focus, just no confirmation for me on the viewfinder. Any advice??

It sounds like you've hit all the major things to check:
In AI Servo mode the AF point will never flash to confirm a focus lock like it will in One Shot mode -- AI Servo mode is continuously focusing.
C Fn. III -3 (Superimposed Display) needs to be set to '0' (on) which is the default.
The beep and the red-light are normally tied together (unless you disable the beeping).  If you get a beep, the selected AF point will normally flash at the same time.  e.g. if you were in "AI Servo" mode (instead of "One Shot" mode) then you would not get an audible beep or the red AF point flash to indicate which point is focused.  The fact that you get the beep indicates you are in the right mode and it's confirming... but you should ALSO get the red flash unless you disabled it via C Fn. III -3 set to 1.
You could try clearing all custom functions and resetting the camera back to factory default state, but if that doesn't work, I suspect it needs service.

  • New laptop, and I dont want to loose what i already have on my Ipod, help?

I have installed Itunes, I have synched and synched again, pushed every button on the ipod and in my library, and cant seem to get them to talk to each other. (other then my ipod saying that it is in fact synching) when i first plug my ipod in to my computer, it gives me the option to delete everything to move my itunes store purchases over, but there has to be a way to 1. get my itunes purchases to my ipod, and 2. get my library from my ipod onto my new laptop.
    Right?!?!?!?

Do what it told you to do - restore.
You will lose anything that you have failed to backup.
Not backing up everything before any update is a mistake.

  • New Macbook Pro 15 inch heat on the left and back bottom.  Also, Fan is constantly running although I am only using Safari and it is a month old machine

I have a new macbook pro about a month old.  Have not used for anything but internet browsing it is a 15" machine, I can feel the heat from the left corner and back bottom.  Also, the fan is constantly running.  Is this something I can do to resolve.

Fans are supposed to run whenever the Mac is on. Default/minimun speed is 2000RPM.
How hot is hot? Mine is running the CPU cores at 45-50C, the Radeon GPU 35-40C when not engaged, the chassis sensors 30-38C. And current ambient temperature is 27C at my location. I currently have Safari, Mail, TextEdit and Temperature Monitor online.
If you want a quick check of what the Mac's hardware is up to, download & install the iStat Pro dashboard widget. If you want a detailed view of the 20 or so different temperature sensors on the thing, download & install Bresink's free Temperature Monitor. And if you want  to see ALL the different sensors it has, purchase Bresink's Hardware Monitor.

  • Battery on my 11 Months Old MBP - 93% Health / 17 Cycles

My MacBook Pro is about 11 months old, I have just did a full drain/charge cycle on the battery since I forgot to calibrate my battery for the last 5 months. I just looked up the battery health, it shows 93% health/17 Cycles.
Does this health percentage seem normal?

*"How exactly does the battery health detoriate? I've had my MBP for about a month or two, and it's at 98% health with 19 cycles. Does the battery just fizz out after long term use? How can you calibrate your battery? And, does battery health have to do with battery care or cleaning? - Originally posted by: mbpjunkie"*
I figured out how to calibrate the battery. Just have to charge it fully, unplug it from the wall, use it until the battery power runs out(or finishes one power cycle). Then shut down when it goes into sleep mode, reboot plug it back in and charge it fully again. This is the calibration process.
Now I just need my other questions to be answered.

  • Vista corrupting my iPod

I know everyone has answered this a thousand times and that theres updates and everything for it. But i just got my new 160 gb classic and im running windows vista and everything is fully up to date but my iPod still gets corrupted when i sync it to my computer. HOW DO I FIX THIS?? been having this problem over and over and it annoys me like crazy. please help. again, ive tried pretty much everything everyone says to do and it just keeps messing up my iPod. restoring doesnt help. i dont use a hub, i connect the iPod directly into the computer. i just finished updating everything: itunes, my vista software, my ipod software, but it still corrupts my ipod. help!

I have also had terrible problems since 1.0.2 has been released. When you try to eject the ipod it goes into a reset mode - where it shows the apple screen and after about 8 seconds restarts again. They only way out of it is to go to disk mode and restore.
What errors / problems are you getting?

  • Honda Corrupts my iPods?

I have the Honda Music Link for iPod in my 2006 Civic.
At this point it seems to have corrupted two iPod Classics. I dont know if it is something in the Link system, the cable or ???
The first iPod lasted for years, sitting in the glove box, only being used for this system. When it gave out, I was unable to get it to mount in any manner, no restore, no boot, nothing whatsoever. I figured that unit was dead so I went to another Classic I had and it lasted only afew weeks and now it is showing the "unhappy ipod/support" screen.
Any thoughts on how this could be happening, or is it coincidence. Anything I can do to try and resurrect either of these units?
    Thanks.
    Henry

I have the exact same problem, except I'm out of the country and my AC charger is at home, because it won't work over here and I was relying on charging it on my computer for the time I was over here. Just from looking around it seems the software upgrade has messed quite a few people up.

Re: Mail virus and Trojan issues

    Hi please help.
I have a iPad 2 , not jail broken, just 2 months old fresh from the apple store. Recently I have been directed to **** sites or a fake bad oink **** application, through various applications. From google chrome app, the photon app and safari.
I always delete cookies and cache on exit. I use photon and puffin to watch flash player videos on tv series site with links such as put locker. I heard that there is no virus for the iPad but Trojans do exist.
Pleae help, at first this was just happening with photon app now in 3 different apps, and it is directing me always to the same **** site. I don't watch **** so it's. it from cookies or whatever and my iPad has been randomly turning off and also the videos are working really badly now. Also there is a message red alert staying untrusted site and hacker may be intercepting your device. What is going on? Please help
Is their a new redirecting Trojan or virus for iPad 2. ? If yes how can I remove it and will it cause permanent damage to my device? How could I have got this virus and in 3 apps. I'm also, worried as I use my iPad to buy things online etc with my credit card. What shall I do?.. Do I restore my device? How do I do that as I cannot connect to iTunes as I do not have a computer, just my iPad. Any help appreciated thanks.

They broke a story on sept 4, 2012 titled "apple's iOS, the new favorite malware victims"
Despite the dramatic title of the article, the only mention of iOS in the body was this:
Even though malware is increasing in iOS, it still remains relatively low compared with other operating systems.
And, it provides no examples or other documentation. And, unlike you, I don't consider CNET "the most legit tech site on the internet". I find them to be generally biased in their reiviews and heavily influenced by advertisers.
    http://www.forbes.com/sites/timworstall/2012/06/26/yes-apples-machines-really-ca n-get-viruses
The Forbes article descibes issues with the Mac OS, of which there always have been some, though certainly far fewer than there have been on the Windows platform. It goes on to speculate :
All those iPads, iPods and iPhones? Is this going to be a juicy enough target for the virus and trojan writers to at least attempt to attack, even given the difficulty of doing so?
Again, the Forbes article doesn't mention any current viruses, trojans or malware that exist which will affect an unjailbroken iOS device.
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/15/iphone-malware-kaspersky_n_1515074.html
And, the HuffPo article quotes Grebennikov thusly:
"Our experience tells us that in the near future, perhaps in a year or so, we will see the first malware targeting iOS," Nikolai Grebennikov, Kaspersky's chief technology officer, told Computing.
Again, even Kaspersky doesn't say such things exist now, merely that they might.
Speculation about what might happen in the future or articles focusing on the Mac OS or Android are not terribly relevant. So, if you do have any other citiations, preferably from a source that doesn't derive most of is revenue from the companies it reviews, that document a virus or trojan that affects an unjailbroken iOS device, I would be interested. I have not been able to find any. I thought, perhaps, as a professional, you might know of some.
    Thank you.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic  test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. It does nothing but produce human-readable data about the state of your computer. However, you need to be cautious about running any program at the behest of a stranger on a public message board. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only run the test in safe mode, proceed anyway.
If you have more than one user, and the affected user is not an administrator, then please run the script twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The administrator is the user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time. If you can't log in as an administrator, just run the script as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    clear; shopt -s extglob; Fb='%s\n\t(%s)\n'; Fm='\n%s:\n\n%s\n'; Fs='\n%s: %s\n'; PB="/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c Print"; Pm () { [[ "$o" ]] && o=$(sed 's/^/   /' <<< "$o") && printf "$Fm" "$1" "$o"; }; Pc () { o=$(egrep -v '^[[:blank:]]*($|#)' "$2"); Pm "$1"; }; Pp () { o=$($PB "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'); Pm "$1"; }; Ps () { o="${o##+( )}"; R () { [[ "$r" -eq 0 ]]; }; [[ "$o" -ne 0 ]] && printf "$Fs" "$1" "$o"; }; a=$(id | grep -w '80(admin)'); r=1; [[ "$a" ]] && { sudo true; r=$?; }; t=`date +%s`; clear; { [[ "$a" ]] || echo $'No admin access\n'; [[ "$a" && "$r" -ne 0 ]] && echo $'No root access\n'; system_profiler SPSoftwareDataType | sed '8!d;s/^ *//'; o=$(system_profiler SPDiagnosticsDataType | sed '5,6!d'); fgrep -q P <<< "$o" && o=; Pm "POST"; o=$(nvram boot-args | awk '{$1=""; print}'); Ps "boot-args"; o=$(ls /L*/L*/Dia*/*.panic | wc -l); Ps "Panics"; o=$(ls /L*/L*/Dia*/*.c* | tail); Pm "System crash logs"; o=$(ls L*/L*/Dia* | tail); Pm "User crash logs"; o=$(syslog -F bsd -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|SATA W|timed? ?o' | tail -n25 | awk '/:/{$4=""; $5=""; print}'); Pm "Kernel messages"; o=$(df -m / | awk 'NR==2 {print $4}'); [[ $o -lt 5120 ]] && Ps "Free space (MiB)"; o=$(($(vm_stat | awk '/Pageo/{sub("\\.",""); print $2}')/256)); o=$((o>=1024?o:0)); Ps "Pageouts (MiB)"; s=( $(sar -u 1 10 | sed '$!d') ); [[ ${s[4]} -lt 90 ]] && o=$(printf 'User %s%%\t\tSystem %s%%' ${s[1]} ${s[3]}) || o=; Pm "Total CPU usage" && o=$(ps acrx -o comm,ruid,%cpu | sed '2!d'); Pm "Max %CPU by process (name, UID, %)"; o=$(kextstat -kl | grep -v com\\.apple | cut -c53- | cut -d\< -f1); Pm "Loaded extrinsic kernel extensions"; R && o=$(sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|calendarse|cups|dove|isc|ntp|post[fg]|x)/{print $3}'); Pm "Loaded extrinsic daemons"; o=$(launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)|\.[0-9]+$/{print $3}'); Pm "Loaded extrinsic user agents"; for d in {/,}L*/{La,Priv,Sta}*; do o=$(ls -A "$d" | egrep -v '\.DS_Store|^com\.apple'); Pm "$d"; done; o=$(find -L /S*/L*/E* {/,}L*/{A*d,Compon,Ex,In,Keyb,Mail,P*P,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo}* -type d -name Contents -prune | while read d; do ID=$($PB\ :CFBundleIdentifier "$d/Info.plist") || ID="No bundle ID"; egrep -qv "^com\.apple\.[^x]|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|HDPro|HighPoint|driver\.stex|hp-fax|\.hpio|JMicron|microsoft\.MDI|print|SoftRAID" <<< $ID && printf "$Fb" "${d%/Contents}" "$ID"; done); Pm "Extrinsic loadable bundles"; o=$(find /u*/{,*/}lib -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b "$1" | grep -qw shared && ! codesign -v "$1"' {} {} \; -print); Pm "Unsigned shared libraries"; o=$(launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES); Pm "Inserted libraries"; R && o=$(sudo profiles -P | grep :); Pm "Profiles"; o=$(find {,/u*/lo*}/e*/periodic -type f -mtime -10d); Pm "Modified periodic scripts"; for f in fstab sysctl.conf crontab launchd.conf; do Pc $f /etc/$f; done; Pc "hosts" <(sed '1,10d' /etc/hosts); Pc "User launchd" ~/.launchd; R && Pc "Root crontab" <(sudo crontab -l); Pc "User crontab" <(crontab -l); R && o=$(sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook); Pm "Login hook"; Pp "Global login items" /L*/P*/loginw* Path; Pp "User login items" L*/P*/*loginit* Name; Pp "Safari extensions" L*/Saf*/*/E*.plist Bundle | sed 's/\..*$//;s/-[1-9]$//'; o=$(find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) | wc -l); Ps "Restricted user files"; cd; o=$(system_profiler SPFontsDataType | egrep "Valid: N|Duplicate: Y" | wc -l); Ps "Font problems"; o=$(find L* -type f ! -size 0 -name *.plist ! -exec sh -c 'plutil -s "$1" >&-' {} {} \; -print); Pm "Bad plists"; o=$((`date +%s`-t)); Ps "Elapsed time (s)"; } 2>/dev/null | pbcopy; exit 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the script will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important, so don't worry about it.
The script may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. There is no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear in the Terminal window.
You can then quit Terminal. The output of the script will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. All you have to do is paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V again. If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary. Please don't copy anything from the Terminal window.
When you post the output, you might see in your browser the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." That's because the forum software falsely identifies something in the post as a violation of the terms of use. If that happens, please post the output on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may offer you advice based on the output of the script. They speak only for themselves and I don't necessarily agree with their views.

  • My ipad is less than 3 months old but my battery life is not great. What can I do? Within an hour I have lost nearly 30% of battery life

My ipad is only 3 months old and already just from using pages for about an hour the battery life has gone down by 30%. Is this correct or is there something wrong with the battery life? So much for 10 hour battery life....

You may  have stuff running that you don't know you hve running. Such as notifications default to on, so you may have a bunch of stuff going out and reaching for info that you don't realize is running. So you can look there, and also look at your mail. If it's set to fetch mails or to push. if it's on push, then y our iPad is reacing out to get the mail all the time.
So try turning stuff off. but if the battery is still not acting like you want it to, make an appointment at your local apple store and have them run diagnostics on it, just to make sure. they might also be able to give you some tips or find what's draining your power.
