My 8gb ipod touch won't update to ios 5

um i have a 8gb ipod (bought it last year) and i tried to update it to ios 5. when i tried to update it, it kept saying that the software was the latest version (4.2.1).
is there going to be an update or is it something else?

If it does not have a camera, yur iPod os a 2G iPod and thos con only go to iOS 4.2.1. To verify see:

Every time I go on iTunes, I get this window thing that says "New update available for iPod Touch....iOS 5.0.1" but every time I do it, it downloads it and then says "The network connection timed out. Make sure your network settings are correct or try again." There's something wrong, right? I never updated it to iOS 5 so shouldn't it be from my current iOS to iOS 5, not 5.0.1?

iTunes only allows you to update to the latest iOS which is 5.0.1.
Disabling the computer's security software (firewall and antivirus) during the download and update usually resolves the problem.

I have a 16gb, 3rd generation iPod Touch (purchased September, 2009) that will not update past iOS 4.2.1. I know that the 16gb 3rd gen model didn't get all of the iOS 4 features that the rest of the 3rd gen models did, but I can't find anything on the Apple page about 4.3 that would indicate that some subset of the 3rd gen iTouches would be unable to get the update. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and iTunes version 10.2.2.12. Any ideas what's going on?

It just says that it has the most up-to-date software. From what I can tell, when they originally released the 3rd generation iPod Touch, the 16 gb one still used the 2nd generation hardware. At the time, it was still called 3rd generation. As recently as last summer when iOS 4 was released, it was still refered to as 3rd generation (the iOS 4 release information had asterisks on the 3rd gen iPod Touch to say that various features like multitasking wouldn't work with the 16 gb model). Now Apple seems to have retroactively decided to just call it 2nd generation. I'm not very happy since it was sold to me as 3rd generation...

Correct. The 3G iPod does not have the hardware to support an iOS version higher than 5.1.1
To more easily find compatible apps:
iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps.
Apple Club - filter apps by iOS version.
Starting when iOS 7 was releases, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)

App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app
You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.

Unfortunately, I do not have a solution to this problem; however, I am experiencing the same thing. However, my iPod Touch is new. I know you are not apple though I believe I still have apoint. As you can see the release date for these two iPod touches is differentby about a year. My iPod was sold as an apple iPod touch 8 GB third generation,and as I can see from this page and many others have experienced this.
