My "About this mac" lists the processor as a 3.4GHz Intel Core i7. Is this a quad core i7 processor?

under "About this Mac" it says that the processor is a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7. Is this a quad core processor? If so, why is it not stated as such?

Click "System Report"
Under "Hardware Overview" it will list "Total number of Cores". You can check that way. Cores are not listed in About this Mac on my machine either.

From my personal experience, I wouldn't go for an Integrated card. This is one of the most important components for Photoshop, so invest in a decent graphics card (ATI or NVidia). It doesn't have to be a really exepensive one - I have been using ATI Radeon with 256MB of RAM on my Dell Studio for almost two years and it still rocks! (even when I work with 3D in Ps CS5 Extended).
I would also invest in more RAM (this can be added easily - I bought extra 4GB as my Studio came with 3GB).
I wouldn't worry about the processor - I'm on Intel Core 2 Duo - and it works very very well, it's very quick which is very important as I'm training Photoshop.

The downloads are probably .dmg files (disk images). You would open the disk image (double-click it) to find the application or an installer. If it's the application itself, you then drag the application to your Applications folder to "install" it. If it's an installer, double-click the installer to run the installer that installs the application.
NOTE: If you iMac is Intel, it's not a PPC G5.

This is too generic of a statement. They are working on support for the 2012 MacBook Pros and because of the better architecture in the 2012 machines a 2.3GHz machine may perform well.

I have a MacBook Pro 13inch 2.4GHz (Intel Core 2 Duo, 4Gb RAM, 250Gb HDD, NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics, SD card slot, up to 10 hour battery life) bought in October 2010. The charger has been playing up for a while now - the light going out but coming back on when I move the cable a bit - faulty connection it seems. It has now stopped working at all.
Apple UK charge a whopping £65 for a replacement - and the reviews are AWFUL for it!

I've read here on Apple's site that the 85W version will work, as you say, and that it would run cooler with a 13" Macbook - I have a 13" MBP of course but assume this would be the same with mine. I wonder if running cooler is a good thing (it sounds as if it is) and it would be better for me to get the 85W version than the 60W one?
Then I have to decide whether to pay the (extortionate as it seems to me, though I may be wrong) £65 from Apple (bearing in mind the rotten reviews here of the Apple product), or risk a cheaper alternative from Amazon UK, at around £20 (also with various rotten reviews)... Can too much RAM memory in a late 2011 model macbook pro lead to kernel panic? That is what I was told by a senior supervisor from apple support who troubleshot this issue.First noticed this problem in Dec 2014 while using a private wifi at a relative's home. Did not occur again until Feb1 using a public wifi at a hotel. Never happened on my private wifi network until last night attempting to use airplay. ( have used airplay before without issue). Late 2011 MacBook Pro running 10.9.5; 2.4 GHz Intel core i7, 16 GB DDR3,AMD Radeon HD 6770m 1024 MB graphic card. The laptop came with 8GB RAM and I installed 8 GB about 2 years ago for some reason I cannot remember... probably because I thought the system was slowing down a little. I know that sounds silly. I do not run multiple programs at a time except I leave 6-8 website tabs open simultaneously. I don't photo or video edit. I would describe my use as "light" based on reading these blogs.I had purchased apple support and spent hours on the phone with them in early Feb moving up through support and senior support to sending logs to the "engineers." Of course lots of things were done some of which I am sorry to report I cannot recall their technical definitions. Deleted 3rd party apps/programs; re-worked start up menu; re-installed operating system; reset " this, that and the other" using acrobatic simultaneous key strokes both in and out of safe mode..Anyway the results from the engineers came back and they suggested that if it happened again I was to remove the 8GB of RAM I had installed as the system was getting confused as to which chip to use.( that is my interpretation of what was said..prob dumbed down for me)...Anyway 1 day after these pronouncements came down I read that Apple had agreed to fix graphics cards in some late model 2011 MBPs. I felt this was unlikely to be the issue given all that had been done including an extended hardware test but called the Senior Support Supervisor I was working with to ask him to make sure. He never phoned me back. Should I go to the trouble of removing 8GB of RAM from my laptop? Of course I will try it as the alternative is a new computer.Blogs read that this model can support 16GB but Apple didn't test for it. Senior Supervisor claims this is my trouble. Does that make sense? Not to me....but it is clear to all my level of knowledge. Can a malfunctioning graphics card be missed by an extended hardware test? I appreciate comments.

Trying to use Imovie to create a movie using a Mac OSX 10.6.7, 3.2 g Intel core. Using clips from my Sony CRX 150 and need to remove sound in order to add music to the movie. HEELLLP!

OK, I 'm attempting my first movie here using this Mac OSX Snow Leopard with IMovie. I have clips I created from an 8mm Movie projector copied on my Sony CRX 150 and the sound of the projector is all over these clips and I have no idea how to remove that before adding music. So far this has been great and this is my first bump in the road. Also I notice tho, that the icon for my camcorder has disappeared from the desktop and looks like I'm gonna have trouble "ejecting" it in order to shut things down!!! HELLLLP!

Thanks. I tested it out and you were correct. I loaded 2 .dv movies from my external HD back onto my internal HD, and got them re-imported into iMovie, took a few short clips from each of the 2 iMovie events and pasted them into a new project in the Project Browser. Then I deleted these 2 "source clips" from my internal HD, closed iMovie and then re-opened it and found that iMovie would NOT export the smaller clips for a "highlights" .4mv movie without the "source clips" being available.
I read your link on Quicktime. It talks about mostly trimming, which is what I did with each iMovie event before I took each one as a project to export as a smaller .4mv file. But if I use Quicktime (do I need QT Pro or basic), what advantage is it to me to use QT over iMovie (I must admit I am a novice at iMovie and have never used QT or QT Pro as a tool)? Will it then convert any edits I make to a .m4v movie or do I need iMovie to do that?
Does QT allow trimming multiple segments out of a movie during one edit session, or can you only do 1 at a time? By that I mean that, for example, when I use Sonys Picture Motion Browser for my .mts movies, you can only set one Start and one End point for each edit/trim you do: it does not allow you to set multiple Start Stop points like iMovie allows in its Event or Project browser. You can only do one "trim" at a time, save it and then reopen to do another trim. not very useful.

Buying the Macbook pro 2.0 Ghz intel core duo

Im in the process of buying a portable mac and I have set my eyes on the above mentioned computer (due to a very attractive offer BTW). Allthough my trusty iMac DV (from 2000!) still works perfectly, the need of a portable has emerged.
So the question is: pros and cons? Fan issues? (I rember that beeing an issue on som of the recent powerbook models)Other "known" problems?
What about the Macbook as an option?

Mine works fine. Very fast, nice display, loads of great extras like the luminous keyboard and iSight camera, and not too bulky to carry round. To be aware of: Macbook Pros cannot run OS9 software. Macbook Pros run software designed for PowerPC processors only more slowly than previous G4 computers, however universal binaries run much, much faster. Macbook Pros have been known to have certain issues including a processor whine and "mooing" fans. The whine is normal and is the sound made by processor throttling to save power. The whine can be removed but this reduces battery life. Newer Macbook Pros tend not to suffer from mooing fans, it was more a feature of early models, however it still pays to be aware of it. Macbook Pros run very hot due to the Core Duo processor, but this is completely normal and there is no risk of this damaging the computer.
As for the Macbook, this suffers from the same problems mentioned with the Macbook pro. The main difference between the two is the lack of a dedicated graphics card in the macbook. So, if you play a lot of games or do a lot of 3D or graphical design work, go with the Pro. Otherwise, buy a macbook, its much easier on the wallet and features the same processor.

I recently updated the original ram from my 2.66 Ghz Intel Core i7 15" laptop. Can I take that ram (4GB set) and put in my iMac 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo?

The 15" power book had this:

I'm not sure what the difference between DDR3 and DDR2 is. Any support would be great.

DDR stands for Double Data Rate, the original DDR had a speed of 266MHz, double the rate of the previous memory standard of SDRAM which ran at 133MHz. DDR2 and then DDR3 are the successors of DDR. To avoid fitting the wrong type of module they use different memory slots and will only fit the one they were designed for, by way of slots cut in the memory boards at precise positions which correspond to notches in the memory slots.
If you want to know what memory will fit which computer I would go to the Crucial website and use their online Memory Advisor, put in the brand and model, it will tell you exactly which modules fit it and what kits (if any) Crucial have available for it.
