My advice to Ipod touch owners - Don't upgrade to OS 4.0 yet

There are to many errors being reported on this forum with people, like me, losing some or all of their data on upgrade and then not being able to restore. And wasting lots of hours in the process.
The last big iOS update- version 3- was a mess up on Apple's part too (eg Wifi problems)
My suggestion is wait 3-4 months, keep checking this forum to wait for the complaints to quieten down and for apple to release itunes 9.2 , iOS 4.2 (at least). I actually suspect this time the problem is with itunes.
I waited to 3.1.3 last time, I didn't this time, and now regret it big time.

My upgrade went smooth as silk. It took about 20 minutes from start to finish on my 32 GB iPod Touch 3rd Gen. Everything seems to work as advertised, including Wi-Fi and GMail. I do have a personal rule that has served me well over my 26 Apple years and that is to DO NOTHING ELSE (well, maybe take a shower) while upgrading/updating. (I don't even surf the web while the process is ongoing.) Can't say for sure that it's why I NEVER have any of the upgrading/updating nightmares that I read about here on the boards, but I'm not about to test the Apple Gods to find out! The few times I ask for help here have been because the "system" between my ears is not functioning at capacity. Not Apple's fault.
I feel it's perfectly safe to grab the wonderful iOS 4 if you have prepared your iDevice by backing it up and making sure you have the latest iTunes installed on your Mac or PC. It would be a cryin' shame to not be able to enjoy all these new features ASAP.
Some apps definitely need to be updated, however.

I have been working at this for about 4 hours now with no success and I am getting pretty frustrated, so if it show up in my typing please ignore it. I just don't understand why these multi-million dollar companies can't write a manual or put up a web site that can actually help someone with a problem.
Ok, venting aside.
I am running a gateway computer.
Operating System = XP
Router = Linksys WRT54G
I have two other computers that are working fine with the existing wireless net work and have been for some time.
I'm pretty good with my computer but haven't touched my router since initial set-up and all that was done was a basic set up.
My I-pod is searching for a network and I'm three feet away from it but it doesn't find it.
I printed out my wireless setting. I presume SSID name equals the name box on the ipod-touch
Security = WEP
What seems to be kicking my A$$ is the password. The route setting have never been changed so I would pesume the password should be the default "admin" which I put in (JOIN) and get the "Could not find network" screen
So, I have perused this message board trying to discover and answer to mine, and and apparently many others question with no definitive results.
So I guess what I and everybody else needs is a step by step how to guide on how to discover the info needed and enter in what we need to make this work.
Thanks in advance to anybody that can actually help with this issue. A step by step do this would be nice.

Thank you Terpfen for replying, and please excuse my ill temper earlier. I've calmed down some now.
Step: 1 followed step one previously, Main screen, settings, Wi-Fi. Also set power down to 5 min to give I-Pod plenty of time to find network.
Wi-Fi Network Screen.
Wi-Fi ON
Choose a Network (searching indicator) symbol spinning.
Other ...
Ask to Join Networks ON
At this point the I-pod does not find any networks available. The indicator just spins but never returns any results. I am 3 feet for my WRT54G router.
Hence the easy connect isn't connecting.
The next step. is to manually set-up the connection.
Main screen, setting, Wi-Fi, Other.
press "Other" which brings up two fields
Name __________
Security ___________
First Question? Which Name are they looking for. when I went to my router 192.168.1.1 It has the name linksys. However, when I go to my Wireless Network setting it has the name * ???? * which is different than Linksys router.
Now, since one of the goals here is file sharing I presume I should be using the Wireless Network settings name. (which I have tried.)
Next is security, Wireless Network setting indicate setting for WEP Once this is selected you then back-up to the "Enter Network Setting Screen" and you now have a password line added.
Now I have never set a password for the router so the password for the router is the default Password "admin" And I don't recall ever setting a password for my network setting. But, I only use about three different passwords and a cycled through them still with no success.
So, I need some expert advise on how and where to find the info to input into the required field to work or what I need to reset in my router to make this work.
Thanks again for anyone who has constructive input to resolve my and probably many other peoples issues with this problem.

On my classic I'll hold down menu botton on the wheel. But thing happen, I'm tired of letting battery go dead and recharge it, just to freeze up again. Holding down the center/select button and the menu button will reboot your ipod. See if that helps. Also, I'd recommend something else- I had nothing but trouble with my ipod classic until I spent $20 to get Mac OS Mountain Lion. It did what you said and sometimes wouldnt play, or wouldnt power on...
Try rebooting your ipod and let me know what happens and maybe in the future obtain Mountain Lion to aide your ipod in functionality.

This is a general comment, not directed to anyone, and not to be taken personally by anyone. This ongoing screw up with the new upgrade (5.0.1) is getting to be a **** SHAME. In no way can APPLE or anyone else for that matter not know by now that the upgrade is terribly flawed. The Ipod machines themselves are super great products, and I enjoy mine to the max. However the upgrade once applied ruins it. And at least, not to my current knowledge, there haven't been any fixes forcoming.
In my opinion Apple should own up to that fact and warn folks that, even though the upgrade was presented with the best intentions, IT JUST AIN"T WORKING. And not to download it until further notice. This noticication could be done through the retail sales outlet, online, what ever.
I liken this to a pharmaceutical coming out with a new vaccine, encourage everyone to use it, then discover it's bad to the degree it causes it uses to become sick. Rather then pull the vaccine they keep on allowing unsuspecting ones to continue to vaccinate, and become sick. What a shame!

I have an ipod touch 1st generation w/ upgraded software. I bought the game Angry birds to play, but when I click on the icon, it turns black as though the game is going to load, but it doesn't instead it goes back to original screen. Any suggestions???

We're all just fellow users here and as such have no idea when Apple may release an upgrade to the iPod touch and what such an upgrade might include. Sorry, but we'll all just have to wait until such time as Apple announces something new.

IPod touch apps don't appear in iTunes app

My iTunes account used to purchase apps (I always do this on the iPod itself) does not show my apps when I am in iTunes on my computer (using same acct; I double-checked). I have nine pages of apps on the iPod, so I do not want to have to download them again to my computer from the apps store as suggested by people who updated to newer version and lost their apps. Any suggestions? When I connect my iPod to my computer, does the sync apps only work in one direction--computer to iPod? I am afraid to sync for fear of losing all my apps. Any applications downloaded directly to iPod touch are automatically backed up to your iTunes library when you sync.
If you don't trust the automatic system, open iTunes, press and hold Command+Option while connecting your iPod touch to your computer until you see iPod touch appear in the iTunes sidebar. This will prevent automatic syncing. Then use the iTunes File menu -> Transfer Purchases from XXX's iPod Touch.

What to do if the buttons on your iPod touch 5 don't work?

I have had my iPod 5 touch for slightly less than a year. It has been working great however just yesterday my iPod has not been responding when i touch it. For example i can use the home button but when i try to put my password pin in its like I'm not even touching it, it doesn't work. The weird thing is only half of the numbers are responding; numbers near the bottom like 0 9 8 7 6 work but not the rest. This is a very big issue because i can't use my iPod. Sounds like you've done some great troubleshooting so far. The following Knowledge Base article provides some additional steps and recommendations to further resolve the issue you're describing:

Restart your device
Hold the On/Off button until "slide to power off" appears. Slide to power off your device. When it is off, press the On/Off button to turn it back on.

Clean the screen with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth.
Avoid using the device while wearing gloves, with wet hands, or immediately after applying hand lotion.
If you have a protective case, or if you are using a plastic sheet or film on the display, try removing them and testing the device without it.

Hello.
Shouldn't new owners of iPod Touch (e.g., 16 GB and two days old) get v2.1 upgrade for free and not $9.95? I assume this is a firmware upgrade.

Why is it not in itunes?
It should always be in itunes and included in your regular backup of your computer.

I remember there was a time we would say thank god at least there is one provider whose OS updates is not crap. Well guess what ? Apple proved they can ruin customers Ipod touches by bringing out the IOS 4.
Oh now don't get offensive that your iPod is ok and blah blah. Go read fourms filled with angry customers .
Now, Apple should sort this problems out ASAP !
What issues I have experienced ? Here is the list :
- High reduction in WiFi performance and connectivity
- Extreme reduction of battery life
- Huge amount of memory usage resulting in slow response and frequent crash of applications
Before the upgrade I never had any problems with my IPod touch and I am a geek so dont come and tell me : Have you cleared your Safari cache ?? and stuff like that !!
What else has left for us to enjoy from iPod ?

The WiFi issue I have no idea about.
But the reduction of battery life could be that you leave a bunch of apps running in the background with the multitasking feature, so when a bunch of different apps run at the same time all the time it could really drain your battery.
If you've ever gone to AppStore and updated your apps you can see below the title of an app it says the version number. Now that iOS 4.0 has been released the creators of the apps make updates to their apps so that they will be compaitable with iOS 4.0. When you update an app now you might see at the version number that it says iOS 4.0 in paranthesis.

Accessing via IPOD Touch - I don't know my password

I have a WRK54G Wireless-G Broadband Router. I have 2 computers and my printer directly connected to 3 of the 4 ports. At one time I had a laptop that I used wirelessly with the router, but have not used it for a couple of years. I would like to be able to access the network with my IPOD Touch, but I do not know my password. I would therefore like to set up a new password. How do I do that if I don't know my password?

To find out the Password for your linksys router, you need to login to the routers setup page.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop).In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...( In case "admin" password dosent work, then you need to input the password which you must have used when you configured your router for the 1st time).
Click on the Wireless tab
For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
In this window you will find your security key, not down your security key and when you connect your IPOD to your wireless network and if it prompts you for the password, just input your security and click on connect and you should be able to go online wirelessly from your IPOD.

If you've reset and restored and the buttons still don't work, then it needs service. Either take it along to an Apple store, or send it in.
