My airport express needs to be rebooted every day, what's wrong?

Does the fact that I have a router and the airport express cause some redundancy?

If both devices are producing a wireless network, there is an increased chance of wireless interference between them, especiallyi if they are located in the same room. If you normally only one use one wireless network, it would make sense to turn the other one off.

  • Airport suddenly needs to be rebooted every day

I have a client with an AirPort Extreme. He has been using it for several
years without a problem. Suddenly EVERY day (definitely when he wakes up in
the morning and sometimes at other points in the day - as far as I can tell
when the computer is idle) the status light blinks yellow.
When this happens he looses the wireless connection. If I plug an ethernet
cable into the AirPort it shows up under the AirPort Admin Utility, but is
unable to read the configuration to determine what the AP is unhappy about.
A simple power cycle fixes the problem.
I first thought it might be a problem with the AP so I replaced it with a
new one (having the latest firmware).
    Same problem.
I have since replaced all ethernet cables and the Time Warner Road Runner
    cable modem. Same problem.
I even tried a LinkSys router in front of the AP and put the AP in bridge
    mode, but no joy.
    A few other points:
If I sleep the MacBook I CAN NOT get the problem to happen (I am only
    waiting max 10 min)
We "coincidentally" replaced his 3 year old MacBook with a new one (with OS
10.61) a few days before this problem started. I cant see how this could be
the problem as it happens when the computer is sleeping and the fix is to
reboot the AP not the computer, but the timing is awfully suspicious.
I dont know what else to try. Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • Express Needs to be restart every day

Our Express needs to be reset at least once a day. The green light is on and we can see the SSID but when we use our mac (or any other device) to connect to it, we get connection failed errors. Any idea what can be done to fix this?

  • Airport express needs reboot to be seen by iTunes

My airport express needs a reboot to be seen by iTunes. Wireless network is Linksys EA4500 with 2.4 Ghz and 5Ghz networks, Linksys RE2000 range extender set up for 5Ghz and airport express set up for 5Ghz. Latest version of iTunes software and apple express firmware. iTunes running on PC.

Thank you for clarifying that for me.
It may be possible that the placement of the AirPort Express in relationship to the extended Linksys Wi-Fi network may be the factor that it has to be rebooted when attempting to stream from iTunes.
Where do you have the Express in relation to both Linksys devices? Same room, different room, different floor? Also were is the iTunes "server" located, again, in relation to all three device when streaming?
Does the Express still exhibit the same problem for the following two conditions:
When the Express is placed in the same room as the Linksys EA4500 router with the network still extended?
When you temporarily disconnect the RE2000 so the network is no longer extended?

  • Does my Airport Express need to be hardwired to my modem?

My Imac and modem are in my basement.  I have an airport express in my garage so i can play music through Airplay.  Does the airport express need to be connected to my modem with an ethernet cable, or can it just connect to my wifi network to enable Airplay?

See this article, AirPort Utility 6.x: Set up a bridge or AirPort Express: How to join an existing Wi-Fi network in client mode , about configuring the AEX. Be sure to have your Airport enabled on the computer.
I'm not sure how easy this will be when using a non-Apple router.

does the airport express need to be on the same floor as the apple tv for best streaming?

Yes. Distance can increase interference causing delays in streaming.

  • HT204371 Does Airport Express need to be configured to allow AirPlay to work between an iPhone 4s and an iPad2?

Does Airport Express need to be configured to allow AirPlay to work between an iPhone 4s and an iPad2?
Also, attempting to use Airplay with iOS7 shuts off sound to the speakers while allowing sound thru the ear buds!  The fix was to restart by depressing the lock switch (opposite the sound out port).

Does Airport Express need to be configured to allow AirPlay to work between an iPhone 4s and an iPad2?
You need a minimum of three things for AirPlay:
An iTunes host. This can be a Mac, PC, or iOS device.
    A wired or wireless network.
An AirPlay Speaker. This can be an AirPort Express, Apple TV, or a AirPlay-Ready device.
Is your goal to stream between two iOS devices?

  • Does airport express need to be connected to Internet to use purely for AirPlay ?

Does airport express need to be connected to Internet to use purely for AirPlay ? Or can I just attach to my stereo and have my Mac connect directly to it in the absence of a wireless network? Tks

you will have to configure the express to create a wireless network but you do not need a connection to the internet.

    Wirelessly
Just select the option to make your AirPort Express join an existing network in the setup process

  • Airport Express needs resetting to give AppleTV an IP address (via Ethernet)

So my Apple TV (3rd gen) is connected via ethernet to my Airport Express, but the Airport Express needs resetting all the time for my Apple Tv to get an IP.
How do I get them to be friends forever without resetting the AE? When the AppleTv gets restarted, it still wont get an IP so I suspect the AE is the bad boy here.
    Any idea's?

Has this always happened with the Express or just starting happening recently? If just recently, where there any changes to either the Express' firmware or to the cable modem? What is the make & model of the modem?

  • Is airport express needed for an airprinter

is airport express needed for an airprinter? I'm confused about the concept. Pls help

The concept is that you need a printer that is AirPrint compatible if you want to be able to print from an iPhone or iPad, etc without adding additional software.
Apple updates the AirPrint compatible list from time to time, but you can get a general picture of AirPrint compatible printers here:

  • IMac reboots every day at 5:56 AM

Recently my work hours changed, so I'm now up at 5:30 AM instead of 6:30. Because of this, I was able to observe that my iMac G4 - sound asleep as I recently was at this hour - reboots every day at 5:56 AM precisely. Obviously some timed script is running, but I can't figure out what it is, where it "lives", and how to stop it. I have the Cocktail utility, so I ran the daily "cron" script - but the system did not reboot. The only things connected to the iMac are speakers, a Lacie 250 GB Firewire HD, and a M-Audio Keystation 49e USB keyboard (not powered on). I have no idea how long this has been going on since I've never been up this early until recently. Anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this?

Problem solved - and boy do I feel stoopid!
After checking out all the suggestions offered, I went to visist the iMac in question (located in the "family" room in the basement) at 5:54 AM this morning, coffee in hand. At precisely 5:56 AM (by my watch) the UPS shut down for a moment and then turned back on. The UPS battery is obviously fried, so the UPS shutdown/restart "reboots" the iMac (set to restart after power failure). Since the iMac is in the basement, I must have missed the warning beeps that signal battery failure. So what causes the UPS to restart at 5:56 AM? I had this experience years ago at a firm located in an industrial park - some nearby factory had machinery that started up the same time every day - heavy duty stuff - and it sent a huge "spike" down the line which wrecked havoc with out network backups. I suspect the same thing here - something "heavy duty" goes on-line at 5:56 AM and creates a power "spike" (or whatever) - the UPS senses the "spike" and shuts down to "spare" the devices connected to it, but since it can no longer provide power while it's off, it effectively "reboots" the iMac.
Solution - buy a new UPS!
Thanks to all who chimed in - sorry it wasn't something more exotic!
    Robert

    Hello Mark,
Have you done these 2 things?
Under he Airport icon choose Create Network...
And in System Preferences>Sharing, have you setup & enabled Internet Sharing?

  • Airport Express needs frequent resetting

I use a second generation Airport Express to extend a network based on a third generation Apple Extreme. Every few days it fails to work, even though the green light stays on.  I must unplug in Express, plug it in again close to the Extreme, wait until the light turns green, then plug it back in close to where it is needed to extend the network. Is there a fix for this?

    That is great..
    Thanks for the screenshot..
Your first link to client that start 00:25 will be the link to old AE.
It is very slow as you can see 11Mbps. and it is fairly low signal.. at -74db.
But it could be even worse on the Extreme end. You can double click the Extreme icon and have both open at the same time.. in fact you can have multiple windows open at the same time, as you see I have done.
You need to get the signal and speed up.. to do that.. well the fact is you probably need to replace the gen3 with later AE.
Or even better get a pair of EOP (homeplug) adapters and try those.. they may not work.. but if they do, they are better than that poor wireless link.
BTW you have broken the rules on naming.
Your name on the Extreme is far too long. Apple don't openly come out and say it.. but 27 characters is the limit. In fact it is much better for Mavericks if you keep it much shorter than that. I cannot see the wireless name but if it is similar.. then you will get nowhere.
    Reset the Gen3 to factory.
Give it a new name.. AEgen3
Please use different names for the bands. AE24ghz and AE5ghz.
Please then set a fixed channel on 2.4ghz.. say 11. (6 or 1 are other options but you are in a very quiet area wireless wise).
When you setup the Express.. (reset it to factory as well and start over). Extend the 2.4ghz band.
Make sure the Express also has a simple name.. eg AEX will do fine.
Then see how it goes.. it might improve or it might not.
BUT one biggie.. if you are running 7.6.4 firmware on the Extreme.. downgrade it now to 7.6.1 as I have found 7.6.4 terrible when extending wireless.
Downgrade firmware is easier in v6 utility.
Hold down the option key when you select the version number.. just choose the firmware from the list.
