My Airport Extreme Can't See My USB Disk

Hi. I have a new airport extreme out of the box, factory fresh. I plugged in my USB hard drive and cannot see it displayed in the Airport Utility under Disks. I have tried different hard drives, different cables, rebooted the airport, restored it to default settings but still no joy.
The first disk I tried was a factory fresh Buffalo formatted to NTFS. Then I tried my USB disk that was the Time Machine backup on my old Mac that I had connected via a USB cable. Neither can be seen.
At my wits end....
Thanks for any help

The drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32 to be recognized at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme.
The USB port on the AirPort Extreme is underpowered. For that reason, it is often necessary to use a powered USB hub with a hard drive......even if the hard drive has its own power supply.
If the drive is formatted correctly, and you have a powered USB hub, and the drive will still not appear in AirPort Utility, then it is time to take the AirPort Extreme to an Apple Store or service to have the USB port checked out.

  • Airport Extreme doesn't see my USB disk

    Hello,
i have changed the usb disk (full) that i connected to my airport extreme. I replace it by a new one (MEM UP, 2 To), formatted in mac os extended.
This new disk is mounted by the Mac but when i connected it on the Airport, the Airport doesn't see it : "no disk detected".
There isn't hub, it is connected directly.
Have you got an idea ?
    Thanks,
    Rudy

The USB port on the AirPort Extreme is under powered....and your new hard drive may require a bit more current than the old one.
It is always a good idea to use a powered USB hub with the AirPort Extreme whenever you are using a hard drive....even if the hard drive has its own power supply.
A powered USB hub may not solve your issue, but there is also a chance that it will. Might be worth a try.

  • Airport Extreme, can't see usb disk from media player

I have a WD hard drive (formatted in FAT32) connected to my Airport Extreme. I can access it from my MacBook and I can see it under disks in Airport Utility. When I try to access the drive wirelessly from my Merlin media player (that's connected to my TV), the drive doesn't show up under the Airport Extreme Workgroup. I should mention that when the drive is plugged into my MacBook, I CAN access the drive on my media player under my MacBook's Workgroup. So I'm assuming the issue is with the Airport allowing the drive to be seen, and not the format of the drive itself. Can anyone help?

By default, when you enable "File Sharing" in the AirPort Utility, your AirPort Extreme will share out an attached USB HDD with either Macs or PCs.
To access the shared HDD from a Windows 7 PC:
Start > Computer > Map network drive
Drive: <use default or select a drive letter>
Folder: \\<AirPort's Base Station Name or IP Address>\<HDD's Volume Name>
User name: <Enter Base Station Administrator name>
Password: <Enter Base Station Administrator password>

  • Airport Extreme can't connect to USB modem

I have recently bought an Airport Extreme Base Station. However, I now realise that I cannot set it up with my present ADSL Modem - which is a Speedtouch USB - owing to the modem only being able to connect to my Mac via a USB cable and I therefore can't connect it to the Airport's Ethernet WAN port.
Is there any way round this? My ISP is Orange, and they have been extremely unhelpful when I've contacted them in the past with Mac-related problems. I know I could change ISP but this seems a lot of hassle that I could do without; my broadband connection has always been fine hence I have no issue with Orange on that front.
Is there anything I can do to connect the existing USB modem to the Airport?
    Thanks.

You might want to take a look at something like this Broadband Adapter.
I haven't used this device, so can't advise on whether it will work satisfactorily or not for you, but did notice that it claims to be compatible with Orange services.

  • Airport extreme can't see any wireless networks.

Hi, I have an iMac that has always used an ethernet connection to the internet, but now I want to connect wirelessly. But it doesn't seem to "see" any networks, mine or otherwise, which work fine on my other apple devices. Does the fact that my wireless card was purchased (as was the imac itself) overseas make it incompatible with US wireless networks? Or is the card broken and I have to take the computer in for repair? Or is there some way I can resolve it myself?
Here is what my Airport card info says:
    AirPort Card Information:
Wireless Card Type:          AirPort Extreme  (0x14E4, 0x88)
      Wireless Card Locale:          Asia Pacific
Wireless Card Firmware Version:          Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.10.91.22)
Current Wireless Network:          wireless network not available

Yes, it does. Still doesn't "see" any networks. If I need a new airport card, is this something I can do myself or does it have to be done at an apple repair shop?

  • My AirPort Extreme can not see my SMC router

I have a new MacBook Pro. It can see other routers (in my neighborhood) and connect to the internet by ethernet cable into my SMC router but it can not see the SMC router wirlessly. I have no security on my router right now. Any ideas?

I have the exact same problem: SMC Barricade G 2408WBRP-G-CA with v2.08 firmware. Because there's lots of talk of problems with WEP, turned that off, but no luck, the built-in airport card of the powerbook won't connect to the router.
I have successfully connected to a Cisco access point at work with 128-bit WEP with no problem at all, so I'm certain the hardware in the machine is functioning... just not with this access point.
This is a brand new 17" Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro that I just received... all available software updates applied.

  • New Airport Extreme  - can't see old Airport Express

I've succesfully installed my new airport extreme but the old airport express is not visible anywhere. What is the procedure to connect it to the network?

Do a factory reset. Unplug the Express, take a paper clip or ball point pen, depress the reset button and hold it in while you plug your Express back into a power outlet. The light will blink green a couple of times and then blink amber rapidly. When the amber light stop blinking and stays solid, you can release the reset button. Give it s a few minutes to recycle. Then open Airport Utility (I assume when you say that you installed your new Extreme you mean the 802.11n. If you mean the Extreme g, use Airport Setup Assistant. Once it opens it should scan and your Express will show up with its factory ID. You can use the Utility to set it up.

  • AirPort Utility can't see Extreme

    Airport Utility can't see Extreme
I have reset the extreme, reboot the iMac, and while I have an internet connection, the AirPort Utility can the the extreme.
    Light is flashing Amber.
    AirPort Utility is 5.3.2

So following your instructions I, disconnected everything, powered it up, and from the Airport icon I could see other wireless networks and join them.
Next I created a new network with the Extreme, and join that one.
I see nothing in his instructions about 'creating a new network'. Instead, I see the words: See if the *Extreme network* shows up there. If so, log into *that network*...

Connect Mac to Ethernet LAN port on the AEBS. Make sure your Mac has IPv6 turned on (under System Preferences|Network|Advanced|TCPIP|Configure IPv6=Automatically). Open the Airport Utility.
If you still don't see the Airport, open a terminal windows and type:
    mdns -B airport.tcp
If you get a response, look for something under the "instance name" column. Take that name and type (replacing the name you got above with 'thatname' below):
    mdns -L thatname airport.tcp local.
and copy the result and post it here.
If you don't get a response from the first command, enter:
    ifconfig
and copy the result and post it here.

  • Airport Utility can't "see" base stations after Leopard 10.5.4

After upgrading to Leopard 10.5.4, Airport Utility can't "see" Airport Extreme UFO version and Airport Expresses. But the Expresses are glowing green, so I assume they're working. But if they can't be "seen" when scanned by Airport Utility, they can't be added as speaker options to iTunes.
Have unplugged and re-plugged in power to Airport Extreme and Expresses.
Oddly enough, at one point the sound through my eXpresses would kick in for five seconds and then disconnect for a minute, then play for five, then disconnect for a minute.
This same thing happened when I switched to Leopard.
    Any solutions?

Well what do you know...after a week, it just magically decides to work, without even using Airport Utility.
Boy are these Airports touchy....and unreliable.
I still want to know: What makes these things drop in and out???

  • Airport Extreme AC (5th Gen) and USB Hard Drives

I just got a new iMac.
Previously I had three external hard drives chained together directly via firewire 800 on a Mac Mnin. In the old configuration, Time Machine backed up to one of HDs pretty quickly. Since the new iMac doesn't have firewire - I took those same hard drives - using their USB 2 connections and put them on a hub connected to Airport Extreme. I see them under shared drives and access is great - but the back up speed is not very fast. Is there a better way to connect these drives for the purposes of Time Machine backups? They are formated Mac OS exteneded, etc
    Thanks.

The confusing part to me was that the new Extreme has a USB2.0 spec?
    It is easier and cheaper.
USB3 spec causes 2.4ghz wireless issues.
    See http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2423604,00.asp
In a wireless router.. that aint good.. and some manufacturers have had issues.. Asus for example. Their USB3 are useless in several of the routers because they did not shield well enough.
Internally the AC version AE is same chipset as the Asus.. they could have used USB3 which is built in.. but I think went conservative and decided not to as they were faced with early release of hardware they didn't understand. And so they are still having issues with the basic hardware.. imagine throwing in USB3 wireless issues.
All of the above is total and utter speculation on my part. Apple are the most secretive company in the world.. they don't even own up to mistakes.. they never tell you what they are doing or why. No apple rep will say I am right or wrong.. total PR blackout.
But IMHO that is why you should have bought a Time Capsule which has a SATA interface inside.. and is very much faster than USB2. The cost increase is only what the hard disk costs.
No doubt gen7 or gen8 will suddenly come out with USB3. It always pays to keep some features up your sleeve even if the chipset manufacturer has them built in.

  • Airport extreme doesn't see my hard drive (free agent 500Gb)

airport extreme doesn't see my hard drive (free agent 500Gb)

A few things to check are:
Make sure that the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32. The normal Windows format of NTFS will not work.
The USB port at the AirPort Exteme is under powered. You almost always need to use a powered USB hub with a drive at this port, even if the drive has its own power supply.

  • Airport Extreme doesn't see cable modem

A new Airport Extreme refuses to see an Optimum Online cable modem. As for troubleshooting, I've seen the new AE working at an Apple authorized store, bought a brand new ethernet cable, but still only get a blinking yellow light. I can plug my G5 directly into the modem with no problems. Any thoughts?

I had a similar problem once. Turned out Verizon (the ISP) had their DHCP server bind to the MAC address of the first machine connected to it and wouldn't issue a new IP address to another machine (MAC) address, unless you either:
    1) let it time out like 45 mins!
    2) you spoofed the MAC address of the old device on the new device. (Can't do this on the AEBS, unfortunately.)
    3) you connected the old machine and (rather than just disconnect it after it got an address from the DHCP server), you actively released the DHCP address.
Until I found out this vital DHCP server behavior info (after waiting an hour on hold with tech support and then working through level 1 support's noob scripts), I too was playing around with resetting the modem, etc., etc. The problem however was the ISP's DHCP server 'security'.

  • Boot Camp with Win 8 Can't See The USB External Drive [MBR with NTFS, Fat32, HFS Partitions]

Hi. When I boot to Boot Camp with the latest Apple Windows Support drivers can't see my USB Flash Drive, DVD and OS X volumes but not my USB external drive that has an MBR partition scheme (using iPartition from GUID) and in there it has different volumes [HFS when I boot to Snow Leopard, Fat32, NTFS]. What can I do with Boot Camp to make it see my USB external drive and why isn't it seeing the USB when it can see the USB flash drive both use USB?
    Thank you in advance.
    God bless.

  • Airport Utility can't see Airport Express Device

I tried to print some documents and I received a message telling me the printer is not ready or may not exists, so I launch the Airport Utility to see what is going on and there is no Airport Express just my Time Capsule.
I already reset the airport express to factory settings and everything goes ok until the green light shows but the airport utility can't see it.
    Any help will be appreciate
    thanks
    Dan
I already tried connecting the Airport Express to my computer with an ethernet cable

Connect an Ethernet cable between the wall jack and the WAN (circle of dots) port on the AirPort Express. Connect a second cable between the LAN (opposing arrows) port on the Express to your computer.
You should now be able to access the Express using the AirPort Utility to configure the Express as a WAP.

  • I can't see my usb devices on my desktop.

i can't see my usb devices on my desktop. i tried to restart and re-plag but it doesn't show up. help?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
That's normal. You have to set up Finder to show external drives on Desktop.
To do this, open a Finder window, go to Finder menu (on the menu bar) > Preferences > General, and mark "External disks"
