Airport extreme suddenly stopped "accepting" password. The signal appears strong -- just will not accept a log on. No changes have been made. It is not the modem. Have replaced the airport with my old linksys and wifi works fine. Is there a way to "reset" it and start over. We've unplugged it (airport) for 30 minutes and still the same result.

To do a factory reset, unplug the Extreme and push in the small round reset button on the back with a straightened paper clip or point of a pen and hold it in while plugging it back in - when the light starts to blink fast, release the button - then wait for the light to blink slowly - this indicates that the factory reset has completed - you can now re-configure the Extreme from scratch.

Repair your Apple Software Update.
Go to START/ALL PROGRAMS/Apple Software Update. If it offers you a newer version of Apple Software Update, do it but Deselect any other software offered at the same time. Once done, try another iTunes install
If you can't find ASU in all program, you can do it in CONTROL PANEL, ADD N REMOVE PROGRAMS.

I have the same problem and unfortunately the only way to get an iCloud ID is to set one up on an Apple device that uses the Apple OS opperating system. If you don't own one, or can't qfford one, then you are simply shut out of using the iCloud. Does it suck? Yes. Is there any solution other than buying an Apple device? No.

Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.

Over a very large sample of drives, these drives are very reliable, despite being moved around inside laptops.
You do not have a very large sample, you have ONE drive. Anything that happens, from having it run for twenty years to having it die on the first day, is within the normal range.
The rapid resolution to your problem IS to replace the drive. At your leisure, you may find that after re-writing every block with Zeroes (a process that can take half a day and has no guarantee of success) enough spare blocks can be found to return the drive to service. Or maybe not. If you are willing to invest the time and energy to do this, you may get a nice backup drive, or you may get a doorstop. No one can predict ahead of time.

New Airport Extreme vs. one that is 3 years old

What are my advantages to buying the new system. I've got a perfectly good system from three years ago but have upgraded my computers to a MacBook last month and a G5 last year. Will I see a dramatic improvement for the extra money or a significant improvement in security?

There is no improvement in security. If you need a network drive and have no other device to connect it to, the new AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) would be a solution.
If your Mac Book is not 'n' compatible, you won't see a great improvement by replacing your current base station.
This table on iFelix's site describes the differences between the base stations. The new AEBS is the one all the way to the right.

An AirPort Extreme from about 8 years ago would be an 802.11g (flying saucer) model. It would be capable of supporting both 802.11b or 802.11g clients with wireless security up to WPA2 Personal.
Whether or not, you need to replace it, would probably lend itself to the old saying: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." However, if performance is important to you and especially if you want to be able to support 802.11n wireless clients, then you may want to consider upgrading to the latest generation (currently the 5th) of the AirPort Extreme, the 4th generation Time Capsule or 2nd generation AirPort Express. Which will depend on your networking requirements.

Try resetting ...
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home button down at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

Searching the Network with Finder does not offer ANY results in subfolders. What's wrong?

Being connected to a network with SMB (because AFP is apparently broken atm) and trying to search PDF files (as example file type) in a folder does not bring up any search results. It would be correct if the search should not include sub folders, but usually I would like to have subfolders included.
Tried keyword search, file type search, file name search, result is always the same.
Is there some sort of magic trick in OS X Lion to include subfolders in the search? I remember Snow Leopard doing this right off the bat!

Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

I have tried changing my password back to the password I had before and this did not work. I have tried to use another e-mail address for facetime and had verified that e-mail address and this did not work. I do not know how to fix this problem. I have thought about changing my apple id but am not sure how I would be able to carry over the same credit card number to the new apple ID. I loved my Mac book Pro because I could facetime my boyfriend while I am working away and now I cannot. I am starting to hate Mac.

The idea to jumpstart by change was not the smartest one, but gives you an opportunity to use that "temporary" account as permanent. You do not have a choice cause obviously despite you thinking that old account is no more -it does exist on Apple servers. And if you are unwilling to share your [email protected] with friend, just create one extra [email protected] for your friend. One suggestion - do not use gmail.

Photostream in the cloud only keeps photos from the last 30 days (subject to a 1,000 photo limit). When photostream syncs the photos to your device they will stay there until deleted, which means you may well have more photos in your photostream album on your device than there are in photostream in the cloud.
The consequence of this is that if you turn photostream off and on again on your device (or enable it for the first time), it will only be populated with photos from the last 30 days, which may not be all the photos that were previously in the photostream album on that device.
