My Airport is being screwy....

I really have no idea what's going on. One day, just out of the blue, when I tried to join my airport network (Yes, my own one) it said "Error joining York street" then gave me "try again" and "Okay" choices. This has never happened to me before with this computer, and it's brand new. (Bought in late December) The weird part is that the rest of my family is able to get on fine with their computers. We also have an ethernet cable that hooks up to the same wireless. I hooked that up, and it works! So why doesn't my airport work?? Please help!!

You really should encrypt your network. Running without encryption puts your information and connection at risk.
Ensure you have WPA or WPA2 enabled throughout your WiFi/Airport set-up.

  • Airport not being seen

I was able to set up an AirPort Extreme that is being seen by my mac mini. However, my G5 does not see the AirPort Extreme network it created. I have tried to manually type the network in, change security settings, and numerous other setting changes suggested by my DSL service provider. I have about 10 hours in getting this to work and I'm quite at a loss.
Two things of note. As the G5 is my work computer and the mac mini is the kids, I decided to reset the AirPort Extreme and try setting it up on the G5 as I really need the internet connection. The G5 still did not recognize it at factory settings in the Airport Utility and the mac mini did.
Secondly, the G5 does see the 2 Airport Express's I've had in the house and the Airport Extreme didn't till I made a physical Ethernet connection. I would assume the G5 airport card is working fine then. It seems only one or the other can see the Express's, not both.
Can someone point me in the right direction to getting both these computers to see the Airport Extreme network. Thank you.

It looks like your correct. This morning I moved my G5 downstairs and physically hooked it up to the Airport Extreme, went back to factory defaults and redid the whole process. Disconnected it and the G5 recognized it wirelessly. I then moved the G5 upstairs (next to the mac mini) and didn't get the signal although the mac mini had a full strength signal. I then lugged it halfway to the base station (12 feet) and the G5 picked up a very weak signal (2 bars). Unplugging all the phones didn't help.
The signal on the AirPort is set to Automatic, it seems to like 11 as that is what appears in parens. I see where I can select a channel in the AirPort Utility, however should it be changed there or is there a way to change the channel on the G5 itself.
    Thank you.

  • How to stream from iPad to apple tv via airport express with the airport express being connected to the internet

I have an apple tv, iPad 3 and airport express. Im at school and the apple tv is technically not supported by the network. Ive read that one could use AirPlay to apple tv via AE.
Can someone help me make this work? Step by step process if possible.
    Thanks in advance,

The router does provide WIFI, but the thing is the Apple TV will be out of reach. I want to avoid having two routers / networks. That's why Apple TV is hardwired. The AirPort (also hardwired) should only work as a receiver for the iPhone - streaming iPhone content to the Apple TV.
BOTH the Apple TV and the AirPort Express are AirPlay "speakers." That is, you can stream from iTunes to either device. You don't need both if the Apple TV is hardwired to an existing router. That provided the necessary networking for AirPlay to stream over. Wi-Fi is NOT required for AirPlay if you have a wired connection between the AirPlay "server" (i.e., iTunes host) and the AirPlay "speaker."
The Apple TV would work as a "receiver" for your iPhone.
If AirPlay is an application layer software, how may two AirPlay device communicate directly? Normally all communication is relayed by the access point.
AirPlay is a streaming protocol that runs over TCP/IP. AirPlay "speakers" DO NOT communicate with each other directly. The basic communication path is between an AirPlay "server" and an AirPlay "speaker" or multiple "speakers." Again the path between them can be either be wired or wireless or some combination of each.

  • Itunes x64 Windows 8.1 Itunes 11.1.3, Itunes doesn't display airplay icon for multi speakers, it does appear when my iphone connects via airplay to my airport express being used for wireless audio. How to fix ?

Here goes, when Itunes is started (have tried pc reboot and itunes restart) no airplay icon, even though my airport express is connected to second stereo, with green light and confirmed newest firmware for device id A1264 etc. Can send audio to device and device works well.
    BUT
Itunes can only see the wireless speakers when another airplay device (my iphone) pairs and PLAYS via the wireless speakers. THEN Itunes shows the airplay icon, I can then pair my PC to the wireless speakers, connect (says can't play audio because speakers are already paired), disconnect iphone airplay and then the PC connects and can play through wireless speakers.
This is a long process, some sort of glitch etc. and I figure it's an airport express thing maybe that is not announcing itself on the WIFI until it pairs to my iphone, or maybe it's a pc problem that my airplay networking via my PC is not announcing itself properly to bonjour WIFI ?
    Hopefully someone can help me.
    Thanks,
    Laurent

    Open control panel.
    Choose Network and internet
Select the VIEW NETWORK STATUS TASKS under NETWORK and SHARING CENTER section
Choose wireless Network Connection or something similiar. If connected with ethernet then select it and press right button.
    Click the properties button
Find Internet ''PROTOCOL VERSION 6(TCP/IPv6)''  anduncheck it, then click OK.
    Click CLOSE
    Restart your PC and try.
    Reason For Problem
When u will use ipV6 , you have to setup your router and lan/wifi in ipv6 mode. Then bejour pass sound through ipv6 but when you use 2 mode ( ipv4 and ipv6 ) together benjour gets confuse some time it pass through in ipv6 and sometime ipv4 .if your router setup is ipv4 then, when banjour pass sound through ipv6 you will not see airplay button in itunes.
Hope it's clear to everyone .

  • ITunes 7 is being screwy...

Ever scince i have installed iTunes 7 on my computer, the audio on it has been very staticy, but it isn't on any other program with audio (games, etc.). Im having a lot of trouble. The music that i had on it before iTunes 7 was sounding just as it should, but now that I have installed iTunes 7, the music files are ok, it is just that the output of the audio is just not sounding good. I burned a coupple songs to a disk and played them on my radio, and they sounded fine, i just don't know what is the matter with this. Can anyone please help me???

Man this is the worse update I ever trusted. Usually with Mac updates, I refuse till they get their kinks worked out cause I hate being their lab rat. Yeah I'm ******, cause I'm no fan of Windows Media Player either. For the record, iTunes rocks when it works.
Ok that's out of my system. Now for my lab rat report...
Initially my music sounds fine. The scratchiness "turns on" when I open pretty much anything, but not all the time. The scratchy sound sounds like the song is almost trying to play on top itself but its not. remember those old winamp problems? That's what it sounds like. It sounds like there's a memory problem.
If the music sounds fine after running or opening something, it will "turn on" sooner or later. Its a bit random. As I am writing this message I have opened directories and heard the scratch. I then switch to iTunes, stop the song, and then re-start it. Alls fine till it feels like doing it again. Sometimes it won't repeat the same action twice. Links in web browsers have triggered it, as well as opening a simple directory or running a file. But when it happens is different.
One thing is reliable. If, after I get static, and I turn off iTunes and re-run it - I can repeat the process instantly every time. The next action outside of iTunes WILL bring on the scratchiness.
Ok that said, let me clear on my memory: the system is updated, no viruses or spyware detected using trend micro 2006. The computer is using 2 monitors but has a 256 mb ram video card (radeon X850) and it has 3 gigs of ram with 100 gigs of free space.
I hope this info helps - until a solution is found - I'll keep monitoring - if I need to change my statement or add to it, I'll post it.
    Good Luck

  • Snow airport not being detected computers

i have snow airport, a G4 lap top, G3 lap top, 17 inch white imac, and new 24 inch imac.
i have had the airport working fine for years,
i went on vacation and when i got home , no airport
i can hook line directly to the modem(cable) and get internet(no e-mail)
i need to get my airport back up and running,
i have rebooted the modem, airport and computers.
None of my computers will see airport, when i run airport utility. has my airport finally bit the dust??

The old G3 running OS X 10.2 cannot use all of the Time Capsule's functionality:
It cannot use any wireless protocol other than 802.11b, and therefore it cannot connect at speeds greater than 11Mbps.
It cannot use WPA or WPA2 encryption. (It can use WEP, but this provides much less security than WPA or WPA2.)
It cannot use a USB hard drive attached to the Time Capsule.
It cannot administer the Time Capsule.
If you set the Time Capsule to produce a 2.4GHz, 802.11b wireless network without WPA or WPA2 encryption, the old G3 should be able to connect to it. (You might need to update the OS to version 10.2.8 and/or to update AirPort software on the G3 to version 3.1.1.)

  • Airport shows being connected but will not connect to internet

Airport will not connect to internet yet shows me as connected.
When and if I do get connected, I will loose the connection and unable to access the internet.
This has happened using several different wireless locations.
Please help as to what my settings should be or how to correct the problem

What debugging steps have you taken?
Connecting to your wireless network and connecting to the Internet are two different parts of the connection process.
If you open your Network preferences panel does it show you have an IP address of the form 169.x.x.x?

  • Preventing airport from being turned off

Hello. im the techie at a school and we have been having a lot of problems with students turning off the airport and playing games to evade us from watching them. Is there any way to prevent students from changing the status of the airport ( on /off )?
We run all the users from an OD so if it could be run from the server it would be great. but otherwise it would be just as good if its run from the client.
    any ideas?

Would managed accounts be too drastic a solution? Perhaps you could switch the accounts of offending students to such a status.

  • Airport signal being blocked

I control a network of 50+ wired Mac and a handful of wireless users. My wireless users have two Airport Extremes that are located too far away for a WDS setup. One day a few weeks ago both bases stopped working. Both exhibited the same issue where the people logged into them were seeing their signal strength on their PowerBook's flash from full bars to nothing, somewhat just flickering on and off. I thought that it could be related to a big show that was located in the convention center that they are attached to. When I spoke to the networking company that runs the wiring and networks for the convention center I was told that they didn't do anything. The next day one of the Airports was back to behaving normal. The second one didn't get plugged back in until today, when it was it exhibited the same issues as before. When I pulled it out of it's location and took it down the hall to where the other base station was it worked fine. When it goes back to it's home it flickers, even on my known good PowerBook that just connected to it moments before.
My question, is someone intentionally blocking my base stations? How would they go about that? I believe the convention center's network guys did something accidentally, but it appears they may not be smart enough to undo it. I think they are flipping switches in the back and got lucky when they fixed the first one.

    Two suggestions:
    1. make sure both base stations are running firmware version 5.5.1 and not version 5.6. Check this with the Airport Admin Utility, and if necessary get version 5.5.1 from:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportextremefirmware551formacosx.html
    2. radiofrequency interference will easily cause the problem you have noted, and that interference can come from many sources including neighboring wireless networks and 2.4GHz portable phones. You can minimize this interference by experimenting with trying to find a clearer channel - try first either channel 1 or 11. If the Base Stations are in close proximity to each other, make sure they are assigned channels at least three channels apart. The channel setting selection is made under the Airport tab of the Airport Admin Utility.

  • Airport Express being difficult...

Yes, hello, I've got a bit of an annoying problem. Please excuse my slightly luddite use of computer language. Anyway, I have an old Airport Express (5 / 6 years old) connected by ethernet to a Motorola Cable modem. It has been working reliably but over the last few months has got a bit moody, the connection fails and it has to be unplugged and reset to work again, or sometimes when a full wireless signal is there, the house macs can't connect to it, so it needs disconnecting again etc. So, I thought I'd buy a brand new Airport Express. Thought it might set up as easily as the old one, just basically plug it in and off we go. However, even after buying a new ethernet cable the Airport Express fails to realise that the ethernet cable is even attached. In other words, the orange light blinks whern it's plugged in and left, and nothing else happens. If I begin again, I plug everything back in, Airport Utility opens on my mac, and I go through the proceedure of naming the new station etc, but then I get a diagram showing that the ethernet cable is not connected, when of course it is. Is this a problem with my cable modem? Should I now buy a new one? And if so, any recommedations?

Cable modems associate and "remember" the device to which they are connected. When that device changes, the cable modem still looks for the old device, does not find it, and then does not associate correctly with the new device.
The solution is to completely reset the modem to make it "forget" the old device that was previously connnected.
Generally, it would go like this:
Press the reset on button on the modem
Power the modem off completely...this means pulling the power cord from the back of the modem or the wall plug
Pull the battery from the modem....if it is easily accessible
Wait at least 30 minutes....longer is better
Power up the AirPort Express and let it run a full minute
Hold in the reset button on the back of the Express for 8-10 seconds and then release
Allow 45-60 seconds for the Express to start up to a slow blinking amber light
    Power off the Express
After the power down period for the modem, connect the Ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express
Reinstall the battery in the modem if you removed it previously
Power up the modem and let it run for 5 minutes by itself
Then power up the AirPort Extreme and let it run for 5 minutes
Reconfigure the AirPort Extreme using AirPort Utility
    Report on your results

  • IPad 2 keeps being screwy!!! Please read!

My iPad recently started prompting me for my Apple login at random times. Whether or not i enetered the password, nothing happened. The request still popped up an hour later. I tried to restart my iPad, verifying all Apple store unfo...i even went through a back up and restore process hoping it would work. Now, it asks for the passwords and refuses to update apps or sownload from the Apple Store. Help'

One possibility is that you have something large downloading.  Check in the iTunes app, and make sure nothing is downloading there.  I had something similar happen. What had occured was I had automatic downloads on, and a purchase was made on a different device with my account, so it was automatically downloading several gigs of content.  Until it was done, nothing else was loading (it can be paused tho).  Even if there is nothing downloading at the moment, do other family/friends access your account on other devices and computers?  If so, and you have automatic downloads on in your shettings, it could be asking for your password to Download those purchases.
Similarly, go through all of your apps to make sure there is not a single app stuck loading/installing/updating, whether for that reason or any other.
    Close all background apps.
    Restart.
If all that fails, try a sync as a last chance before restoring (make a backup first)

  • Airport Express not being 'seen' after configuration in Windows

I thought I would start my own thread on this, I had put this as a reply to someone elses before.
I have a Gen1 Airport express being used to play music through our stereo system throughout the house. It was working perfectly until I replaced my dead wireless router. So, I did a full hard 'reset' on the AE, connected to the wireless network that the device created, and opened the Airport Utility. All seem to work fine - the AirPort Utility 'saw' the Express, did a configuration and "restarted" it. But while it was restarting, I got a notice that said "Airport Utility was unable to find your Airport Wireless Device..." AFTER it went through it's whole configuration.
The light on the Express is solid green, when I look at my wireless router utility, it shows it connected and it can see it. But none of my devices "see" it - not iTunes, not my ipad or iphone.
Again, it's a Gen 1 Airport Express, computer is Windows 7. Everything was working fine until I got the new wireless router.
When I open Airport Utility after closing it, I again says it's unable to find and Airport Device.  And like I said, the light is solid green, and my network says it's connected to the Airport Express.
i've done this over about 5 times now, trying everything....
    thoughts?
    thanks
    Bob

I suspect your new wireless router.. if not an apple router is simply not airplay aware.. in which case airplay cannot work with the express.. you need a router that is apple compatible.. and not all routers are..
Give the exact make and model of the new router.
Do a google search if other people are having airplay issues with it.

  • My airport doesn't manually shut down: airport icon is off, but activity monitor shows lots of packets still flowing. Its not my activity- all updates turned off. Virus?

I'm running a Macbook Pro circa 2007 with OSX 10.6.8 and Firefox 27.0.1, and just had a circumstance that really puzzled me. I have a Hughesnet satellite modem with wireless router that I connect to via the airport, and I use Little Snitch software in the demo mode so I know and have to approve which software can send info through the internet connection., but the demo mode had just timed out and terminated and within a half hour of that the computer fans started speeding up to max and the CPU got blazing hot (+200 degF).
Worried, I looked at the activity monitor and it was showing lots of internet activity even though I wasn't doing anything on the internet at the time, and I have all my software updates set to manual because otherwise they would use up my allotted daytime bandwidth and leave none for me. I'd already completed manual software updates during the nightly free time recently. Fearing my computer was hijacked & out of my control, I turned the airport off to terminate the internet connection, BUT IT DIDN'T TURN OFF, and though the indicator in the top right of the screen said it was off, packets were still streaming back & forth like crazy on the activity monitor, and the poor thing was still overheating. So I rebooted the computer, and when it came back up there was no internet activity, and things started cooling down, back to normal again.
Though I'm no techie, this seems to me like my computer has been hijacked by some virus that has taken control of the airport and is feeding me lies about the internet connection status, so that it can use my computer for sending out its own messages. Has anyone heard of a virus that prevents the airport from being turned off, and what should I do about it? I'm afraid to back up my data with my time machine, though its been months since that was done, for fear I'd overwrite a virus-free state of the time machine files with a virus laden one, but I also hate to do something to clean up the machine without backing up my files, and lose a bunch of data. Is there virus protection software that could surgically search out and remove only the virus from my machine and leave most everything else untouched?
    Any advice is welcome,
    Christina

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
    Try Changing the Airport Channel
Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a computer using Mac OS X.
Select the device you’re setting up, and then click Manual Setup. Enter the base station password if necessary
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
Choose a new channel from the Channel pop-up menu.

  • How to configure home network with Airport Extreme + D-Link DIR-665

    *hello everyone,*
*I had these two working fine together until the D-Link took a dump the other day. No explanation. Just stopped working until I reconfigured everything.*
*Which then led to my Airport Extreme being unable to connect to the network at all, much less the internet...*
*My home network is set up like this:*
    *Optimum Cable*
*Motorola Surfboard modem --> D-Link DIR-655 (via ethernet)*
*- Provides wifi and ethernet connections on one side of my house*
*DIR-655 --> Airport Extreme (via ethernet run to other side of house)*
*- Provides wifi and ethernet connections on the other side of my house*
*My MBP won't connect to anything other than my AE running N, so I have that set up primarily for my MBP over wifi, while feeding an ethernet connection to a Netgear router running B/G, for my iPhone and other devices.*
**So here are the relative details:**
*I decided to start fresh and do a factory default configuration with my Airport Extreme. My working system from earlier was essentially it's own wifi network, but the airport utility 'insists' that I need to run my AE in bridge mode. I've tried that, but I can't get online. I can see my shared connections, so something's getting through, but I cannot connect to them, in addition to being unable to get online.*
*I'm not really sure how to best illustrate this problem, so I've ran through the process again and jotted down a few notes. Excuse the rambling nature of my narrative, this is a 'blow by blow' account of the Airport Utility setup process:*
    Airport version 7.4.2
    IP address 192.168.0.192
    router address: 192.168.0.2
    Configuring over Airport connection.
    - I want AE to join my current network
-.. connect AE to my network using ethernet to extend or create second network
    - select device AE will connect to using ethernet - DIR-655 network (displayed w/ airport icon?)
    - create an additional network (through ethernet)
    AE updates..
    - problem 1 of 1 : unsecured wireless network
    wpa wpa2
Bridge mode or share a single IP address using DHCP
    selected bridge mode
results: AE has green light, airport utility is satisfied but no connection to network is possible. Shared connections are visible, but unable to access
    next try:
    manual setup
    Wireless mode: create wireless network
radio mode: 802.11n only (5 GHz)
    channel: auto
    wireless security: WPA2 personal
    (bridge mode still active)
(this is the exact setup that worked for years before..)
    updated…
AE light is green, but no connection to internet or shared connections (though visible)
    back to airport utility
    manual setup:
    internet menu:
connection sharing: share a public IP address
    update
    --> 2 problems
    DHCP Beginning address: 192.168.0.2
    DHCP Ending Address: 192.168.0.2
    chose 'assist me'
(now one shared connection to Mac Mini becomes active? Had selected it earlier. Able to browse folders, but not share screen)
AE refreshed now with amber light, with reported problems
Problem 1 of 2: Internet Connection
Your Apple Wireless device does not have a valid IP address. Make sure your Apple wireless device is connected to your broadband modem or local network… etc
    - changed IP address to match router IP address (?) Utility goes on to next problem
Problem 2 of 2: Conflicting DHCP Range
This Apple wireless device rejected a DHCP address in the same subnet as its internal DHCP server. You should probably switch your Apple wireless device to be in bridge mode. If you still want to be using DHCP and NAT to share a single IP address, you should change your DHCP range.
    - maintain selection: share a single IP address using DHCP and NAT (utility forces you to: ignore; skip; or select bridge mode - which doesn't work..)
    - chose 'skip' for problem 2
    - updated AE..
    New problem:
Problem 1 of 1: Double NAT
This Apple wireless device has a private IP address on its Ethernet WAN port. It is connected to a device or network that is using Network Address Translation (NAT) to provide private IP addresses. you should change you Apple wireless device from using DHCP and NAT to bridge mode.
    - selected Bridge Mode
    updated AE…
    "Setup Complete!"
    Unable to connect.
** At this point, I am still able to see my shared connections, and while iTunes is open, I can play my shared library that is on my Mac Pro, which connected to the DIR-665 via ethernet, through yet another D-Link router (DIR-615)! I am still connected to the Airport Extreme via wireless, so the system is working, to an extent.*
*So I'm not sure what to do. How can I remedy my IP address issue? Bridge mode doesn't work (as far as I've experienced), so I'm struggling with my DHCP settings..*
*Thanks to anyone who has any suggestions!*

    Hi Preston,
I would recommend not starting the numbering scheme for the IP addresses using a '0'. Yes the range is 0-255, but some numbers are reserved, and not generally good practice.
Also, assuming you have reset all factory defaults, start anew and have the modem --> router using NAT for dynamic IP addresses --> (other side of the house) Airport Extreme --> not a NAT configuration, but you need a simple switch. Do not use the NAT capabilities on this one. Maybe, just maybe the computer will work now. This will eliminate your double NAT and also help (hopefully) with the D-Link.
Sorry I cannot help more, I do not own any of the products you talk about, however I have networking experience. Hope it helps.
