My aperture library is empty after photos merge

After my update to photos, my aperture library is empty.  I understand I am still supposed to see all my photos in aperture.
Have tried to restore library to no avail.  Also having problems uploading from my canon d40  With aperture it was fast and easy with photos it takes forever and has troubles uploading the pictures.
Any ideas?

I had this problem post-Photos as well. When I opened Aperture, there were no photos. Going to File -> Switch to Library, I noticed that there were two libraries labelled "Aperture Library". In the Pictures folder in Finder, I noticed that the newer library is 7.9 MB, but the older is 148.21 GB. I made sure to select the older library. Aperture had to repair the library database, it took a while, then it opened up as usual. Maybe this will help you, too.
The Photos app is not going to work for me - too little editing options, no NIK support, etc. It's nowhere near a professional alternative, but I guess that was Apple's intention with the app. Oh well, I have a little while to keep using it before shifting to Lightroom or Capture One.

I'm trying to make a slideshow in iMovie, but when I upload photos from my Aperture Library into the iMovie Photo Browser, some photos (305 out of 427) are missing. How do I get iMovie to upload all of them?

I have same problem. I could only see a fraction of my project photos if I browse the Aperture lbrary. It is the same problem when I sync the aperture photos to my iPhone or iPad. I still cannot solve it but I know a way to go around it for your iMovie to see the pictures so that you can work on your iMovie.
    Here is the work around:
Export the photos from your album to your hard disk and re-import into your iPhoto. Now you should be able to see those photos that you want to work on in iMovie when you browse your iPhot library.

  • How can I get my Aperture library back from the Photos application?

As stated above, How can I get my Aperture library back from the Photos application?  I'm not a fan of Photos right now and haven't used iPhoto in years, so that wasn't a loss... I didn't realize when I gave Photo's access to my Aperture library, I was going to lose it...
I want to get it back, any suggestions?
    Thanks again!

what means ..."Once you open the Aperture library back into Aperture..."? What do I need to "klick" in order to getting back my old Aperture Project structure....

  • I have imported my I photo library into Aperture.  all the old i photo events are now in the aperture library showing number of photos but when clicked none display.  I can see the photos if i run the cursor over the project.  Help please.

I imported my i photo library into aperture.
I can see the i photo events in aperture library as events with the number of photos in each event.
When you click events in the aperture library no photos appear although if you roll the cursor over the event icon it show the photos.  If you click on the event either on the event icon or in the library no photos appear.
    Help

Check, if you have any filters set. The search fields in the Insector panel and the browser should be showing "All items" or "Showing All".
The Browser search field could be set for each project and album individually, so you have to check it for each project.

    Léonie
For example: The projects count shows "20 items", but the browser is empty, because the project's filter is set to show only rejected items.

  • Aperture Library size different after restore from TM and rebuild Thumbnails

I have just completed an erase-install-migrate from Time Machine using Setup Assistant.
The size of the managed Aperture Library originally was 397.8Gb
After completion of the migrate back in I opened Aperture and as expected it rebuilt the thumbnails (TM does not backup the Thumbnails).
After doing this I tested the Library as far as possible and all seems well, and the number of photos is exactly the same as before (49,883).
However, the size of the library is now 357.8 Gb.
The only logical explanation (to me) is that the restore process has eliminated previews and thumbnails from photos which I have deleted over the years.
I still have a backup of the original (397.8Gb) version which I could put back with the Finder, but if the restored library has cleared years of redundant previews and thumbnails I would prefer to stay with that.
All done with Mavericks and Aperture 3.5.
    Any insights very welcome.
    Thanks

Just had the idea of looking at sizes in the Library package contents, and the explanation for the change in size is due to three things:
    Thumbnails old: 44.95 Gb
    Thumbnails new: 15.13 Gb
There is also an iPod photocache of 14.6 Gb which is not yet present in the new.
However Previews old was 27.95 Gb and Previews new is 33.18 Gb, so I assume some previews were smaller in the original Library.
Masters is 304.3 Gb in the original and new libraries.
I am beginning to feel more confident about the new library.

  • Front Row Photos - Aperture Library does not contain photos

    Dear all,
Front Row is working fine (iTunes, movies etc) except for photos.
I don't use iPhoto, so it's linked to my Aperture Library.
Front Row shows two Aperture Libraries:
    - Aperture Library
    - Library
However both are empty. The structure is shown, so projects are shown, but everywhere yellow triangles with an exclamation mark and the message"there are no photos in this album"
It's been bothering me for a while, so any help is sincerely appreciated,
    Thanks,
    Peter

and then 3 months later, I found out that I need to update my previews in all the projects in Aperture. Now my Front Row is working (as well as syncing with iPad iPhone etc.). So that mystery is solved, but, I still have two libraries showing up in Front Row:
Aperture Library (which shows projects, no folder structure)
Library (which is exactly what my Aperture contains)
How do I get rid off one of these?
    Thanks,
    Peter

  • Aperture Library not working after update

Hello, I have a problem with my Aperture library.
I had Aperture 3.2.4, and a perfectly working library. I copied the library to an external hard disk, and reinstalled my OS, since I had just added an SSD.
I then installed Aperture 3.2.4, and tried to open the library, that I had copied back in Pictures, but I got this message.
To open this iPhoto library in Aperture, it first needs to be upgraded. Verify that you have iPhoto 9.3 or later. Then open the library in iPhoto to upgrade it.
Since I had not used iPhoto in a while, I don't understand why I get this message, especially since the library is called Aperture Library.aplibrary
I then tried to update Aperture to version 3.3, hoping this would help, but I got no reslut, I still get the same message.
I installed iPhoto 9.3, and tried to open the library, this time getting a different message.
Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable. Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup.
I get the same message if I try to rebuild the library, I tried in Aperture and in iPhoto.
BTW, the masters are safe, I tried to recover them in a new Aperture library in the meanwhile, and I have all my pictures, the only problem is that they are about 15 thousand and they were divided into hundreds of different Projects. Now I have them in one project called "Recovered Files".
    What should I do?

I then installed Aperture 3.2.4, and tried to open the library, that I had copied back in Pictures, but I got this message.
To open this iPhoto library in Aperture, it first needs to be upgraded. Verify that you have iPhoto 9.3 or later. Then open the library in iPhoto to upgrade it.
Your copying seems to have corrupted your Library. When you open the "Get Info" panel on your library, what does it show?
The "General" brick should show "Kind: Aperture Library", and your recent Aperture Version; the "Open with" should show "Aperture". Or does tis show "iPhoto" library?
If the Library is shown as iPhoto Library, ctrl-click it to show the "Package Contents". What do you see inside? Do you see file- and folder names with "Aperture" or with "iPhoto"?
Also look at the original library on your external volume with "File > Get Info" from the Finder.
This is really weird. Usually the trouble shooting measures that Kirby pointed to should suffice.

    Léonie

  • My library is empty after I downloaded a new version of quicktime

iTunes kept giving me an error message that I needed to update the version of quicktime I had and reinstall iTunes. I uninstalled and then reinstalled a newer version of quicktime (7.1) and when I pulled iTunes up again, my library was empty. I can import songs from my music and my computer but it's not my entire library.
    fix?

    further information:
when I go to open my iTunes music library or iTunes music folder, the folders are from the new version of iTunes, and they don't contain my old library (duh). are those folders gone forever?

  • Aperture Library Browser - cant see photos from iPhone in Smart Library

I have just upgraded my iLife 09 with iPhoto. I manage all my images from cameras in Aperture on the same Mac. I know the Aperture Browser is limited and is unable to show me the raw from my canon dslr however I notice that I cannot see the photos from my iphone. I have a smart album in Aperture for each camera I own. If I go to any of the digital compacts they all display the jpegs but the dslr albums will only display the jpg not raw images. The smart album for the iPhone is empty although there are a few hundred images on it......
Any one out there with this working or even with the same problem. I dont really want to use iPhoto to manage my iPhone images I like my masters in one place.

I think I fixed it. I found this post in Aperture Discussions
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1887642&tstart=0
I refreshed by album previews and the iPhone images seem to have re-appeared.

  • Library showing empty after upgrade to iPhoto 11

    Hi all,
Yesterday I decided to upgrade to iPhoto 11, basically because I eventually want to go to Aperture. Although I have been reading about all the problems around iPhoto 11, I decided to give it a try. For one of my libraries the upgrade caused a lot of problems, but I got it working at the end. The second library, though, will not upgrade at all. Instead it is showing an empty library, as if you are using iPhoto for the first time. The library isn't empty, though, because I can still access it with iPhoto9.
So there must be something preventing iPhoto11 from doing its thing, but I haven't the foggiest. I have tried all sorts of things I came across in fora (except rebuilding the whole library) but to no avail.
Does any of you have a brilliant idea as to what I could do to get iPhoto11 working ?

Since you still can open the library in question in iPhoto '09, iPhoto '11 cannot have opened the library at all. Once a library has been opened in iPhoto '11, no earlier version will be able to open it.  The empty library you are seeing when trying to open that library in iPhoto '11, must be a new default library, that iPhoto '11 is creating, since it cannot open that library.
I suggested to try to launch iPhoto in Library First Aid Mode, to force ito open that library. Quite often does this trick iPhoto into opening a library, that it will not open otherwise.
This is a general issue: it does not seem to be possible to set a standard program to open a certain filetype.
Have you tried to use the "Change all" button? Then all ".photolibrary" libraries will be opened in iPhoto '11.

  • IPhoto library appears empty after update.

A while ago I updated iPhoto to v9 and have been happily using my main personal iPhoto library since.
Recently, I needed to check one of my older, business, libraries and iPhoto is behaving as though it's a newly created library with no photos. Further checking of my eight further libraries showed seven of them in the same state, the other went through the expected 'upgrade' procedure and is intact.
    So,
    1. Why didn't the others update automatically?
    2. How do I force them to update?
    3. Short of going into the package contents and extracting the photos what else can I do to recover the situation?

If there are edited photos in the backed up library and you restore it you should be able to view those  edits once you convert the library to the latest version of iPhoto.
There is no way to identify which are edited versions from the Finder.
Since iPhoto 7 will still run on Mavericks I would try this on one of your iPhoto 7 libraries or as restore iPhoto 7 library:
1 - restore iPhoto 7 from your Time Machine backup.
2 - launch it with the Option key held down and select the V7 library to open.
3 - close iPhoto 7 and relaunch with the Option+Command keys held down to open the First Aid window.
4 - select all options and rebuild.
5 - after the rebuild launch the iPhoto Library Upgrader
select the rebuild V7 library and upgrade it.
6 - launch iPhoto 9.5.1 and open the library.  Check to see if it's working as it should.

  • Aperture library removed after transfer to Photos

    Hi
Wonder if anyone can help - I made a mistake and imported my Aperture library into Photos without thinking...and it seems to have deleted the Aperture library, so when I open Aperture there is nothing in there...no projects, albums etc.  How can I restore this to Aperture and delete the Photos library??
    Thanks!

If your images were stored in the Aperture Library, migrating them to Photos should have left the Aperture Library intact, although with a different suffix. Check in Users > Pictures (or wherever you kept the library) to see if you can manually locate and launch it.
If your images were "referenced" in Aperture (stored outside of the Library file) and your Photos preference was set to move them to the Photos Library, then it is possible that Aperture no longer can "find" them.
To restore the Aperture Library folder use your Time Machine, or other, backup. There is no automatic way to migrate Photos back to Aperture, that I know of.

  • Aperture library corrupted - have photos on iPad; how to get them back on my Mac?

My Aperture library became corrupted after a Time Machine restore. For some reason, half the photos are missing and videos are all scrambled.
I still have my complete Aperture library on my new iPad (in iPhoto for iOS). Does anyone know if there is a way to get the photos off my iPad and back onto my Mac so I can restore my complete library? I will never rely on a Time Capsule for Aperture backups again, learned my lesson!

    deepey,
have you tried the usual trouble shooting after restoring your Aperture Library from Time Machine? If you invested a lot of work into your Aperture library I would try first to fix this, before giving up on it.
If your Aperture Library is referenced you probably need to reconnect the missing masters (select the images with missing masters and select File->locate referenced file).
If your Library is managed, the "Aperture Library First Aid Tools "(repairing permissions and repairing/rebuilding the library) may help, see Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805
Transfer from the iPad (sorry, I do not have an iPad available right now to try it, only an iPod): Do you have Photo Stream enabled? You can transfer via PhotoStream or use the sync cable - Aperture can see the iPad as a camera and import like from a camera, see: Re: Importing photos on iPad to Aperture

  • Import an additional Aperture library to Photos?

I successfully upgraded and imported my iPhoto library to the new Photos app.
I have an other, Aperture, library as well.
    How do I import that?
If I try via the Import dialog from the file menu, the Aperture library is greyed out.
If I drag and drop the Aperture library onto the Photos app, it asks me if I want to switch libraries.
What is going to happen to my already imported photos if I switch?
How do I consolidate my previous Aperture library into my existing Photos library?
Any thoughts would be much appreciated!
    J

If I drag and drop the Aperture library onto the Photos app, it asks me if I want to switch libraries.
What is going to happen to my already imported photos if I switch?
When you switch, Photos will create an additional library and you can switch back and forth between libraries. To switch libraries, hold down the alt/options key while launching Photos.
If you have several libraries, you have to decide which library should be the System Photo Library. Only the System Photo Library can upload to iCloud and is visible in the media Browser for Desktop/Screensaver, other applications.  You enable a library as System Photo Library in the Photos Preferences > General.
A second library can be convenient, if you do not want to upload all photos to iCloud Drive because of lack of storage on the synced devices. You could have one small library, that syncs with iCloud, and another large library for the photos you d not need in iCloud.
