My aperture photos are dark/

My aperture photos are dark?  any ideas?

Are you shooting raw?
Then have a look at Keith Barkley's recent user tip.  That explains, why raw photos may change the appearance on import, see this link:
The Big Three: Setting your camera for the best Aperture RAW results
Don't take photos with  Canon's Highlight Tone Priority or Nikon's Active D-Lighting enabled in the camera, if you want to be able to judge the raw file in the camera while taking the photo.

  • Photos are dark and cannot be used in slideshow mode.  Also cannot move photos in a sequence.  Also photos will not move from grid to add to another collection.

Lightroom 4, photos are dark when in slideshow mode.  Therefore, cannot create a slideshow.  Cannot move photos from grid to add to another collection.  Also cannot change sequence of photos.  Have searched multiple  times for troubleshooting help online with no resolution available.

Just to clarify my problem with the "dark photos"....when in slideshow mode, photos are dark and state "no photo selected"  I've created multiple slideshows and this was never an issue.  Just downloaded updates as well for Lightroom 4 and this didn't seem to help either.

  • Black and White Gray Scale Photos Are Dark When Exported from Indesign to PDF

When I print right from InDesign the black and white photos look great.  However, if I print the exported pdf file, the black and white photos are much darker.  Is there something I should be doing upon export so that they will look as they do in InDesign?
    Thanks,

I have tried different settings in format and color space all with the same results. I'm sure it has to do with system not being calibrated. I'm not to computer literate so not sure how all this works. The other programs must go along with my computer and moniter settings where LR and Elements produce their own rendering independent of settings. Yes, I checked and Elements renders like LR. I found some other forums that discussed similar problems but with color rendering. HMMM, just tried something. In Picassa I switched to Linear Gamma 2.2 in display mode and the LR edited photos look correct. So it must be something along those lines being the problem.

  • When importing photos from aperture photos are blurry

I have been making a video and up to now no problems. Then today i was working on it and when i started adding some more photos from aperture they were fuzzy and blurry.
In aperture they are crisp and clear but the minute i put them in imovie they are blurry and not useable.
I have imported photos from aperture and iphoto both and had no issues so not sure what is going on today.

I think I just figured this out.
Go into Aperture preferences and go to "previews" tab.  Set "photo preview" to "don't limit" and turn the quality all the way up.  Then select all your photos, go to the "photos" menu, hold down the option key and click "generate previews".
It appears that the library sharing is just using the generated previews from Aperture which default to poor quality.  You need to turn up the quality and then force a re-render of all your previews.  iMovie should pick this up (but won't update your slideshow...).
Yeah, I'm pretty disappointed by those defaults.   Wasted hours of my time as I rebuilt the slideshow with better versions of my photos.
    Hope that helped.

  • Photos are dark when exported from LR

I don't know if this has come up before, didn't find it in search. When I work up a photo in LR I get it where I want. I then export to another folder. When I view that photo in any other program it is very dark, though importing and viewing in LR it looks fine. When loaded to a site like Flickr it is also dark. I don't have a calibrated moniter but think the rendering should be the same or close between all programs on the same setup. Is there an adjustment in the LR program for rendering?

  • My ePrint photos are dark. Is there a fix?

I am using Mac Mountain Lion and an HP Photosmart Plus B210.

    Ask1942,
Ok this is kinda weird. Lets figure out what's going on.
When you send the photo through ePrint from the iPad do you do it as an attachment from your email or do you go straight to the photo and click the action button that allows you to email ? Or do you use a certain app or something?
Also have you tried printing a photo using Air Print ? Air Print is basically printing the photo directly from the iPad to the printer over the same network. It would be helpful to know if you are able to do this and what the photo looks like. To Air Print you would just make sure the iPad was connected to the same wifi network as your printer is and then go to a photo and click on print. It should show the printer the options and you can click on print from there.
    Let me know what's happening.
If I helped you at all it would be great if you clicked the blue kudos star!

  • HP Photosmart Premium all-in-one C410a. The photos are coming out dark, what is happening?

The photos are dark. I am sending the photos wireless from my Toshiba Netbook NB205-N325BL with Window 7 Starter to my HP Photosmart Premium all-in-one C410a. The photos are dark when i send the photo from my iPhone 3Gs too. I have changed out the ink cartridges to see if that was the problem since the ink cartridges were low.
I have recently purchase this printer. I recently had a Photosmart All-in-one C7280 and was very happy with it until it stopped working with Win 7.
    Your help is appreciated.
    thank you,

    Laura,
There are quite a few trouble shooting steps in my [FAQ|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2658560&tstart=0]. But to cut to the chase, first make sure you can run one of the Apps on the Printer and its getting content. Then make sure the firmware is the latest (Tools->Web->Automatic Updates->Check for Product Updates). Then power cycle everything (Router, Printer, iOS device). If it's still not working, more likely then not its a problem with your wireless router and Bonjour, so post back what brand of router you have, the model, and how your network is configured.
    Just trying to help.

  • Aperture photos available in 'screen saver' but not 'desktop'

In 'System Preferences' the Aperture photos are available in 'screen saver' but not 'desktop'.
    Any ideas?

    Brian,
As far as I know, those two lists come from the same place. I've always seen them both contain the same items. However, they do not look the same for some reason. Under Desktop, I have to open several disclosure triangles before I get to my Aperture photos, but with Screen Saver, they are already open at the top level.
That being said, first things first: have you tried the [Troubleshooting Basics|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805]?

  • Is there anyway to give my wife access to my Aperture photos if she only uses iPhoto (not Aperture)?

If we share a wifi network..how can she get access to copy some of my Aperture photos (she only has iPhoto).  It seems all my Aperture photos are stored inside the Aperture Library (on my MBP).  But she can't really go in there over the wifi I'm guessing..since she doesn't have Aperture...

If you use the workflow I recommend your wife can access the backups of your originals from before they were entered into Aperture (store the backups in a location accessible to her). Of course, those originals will not have any edits performed in Aperture.
    Suggested workflow steps:
    • Use a FW card reader or MBP slot to copy to a file folder on the SSD or hard drive. With fast camera cards copy times are quick, but cheap slow cards can slow this step down a lot.
    • Eject and physically disconnect the card reader.
    • Back up that file folder on external drive(s).
    • Only after backup is complete and verified, reformat the camera card in-camera.
    • Import images into Aperture from the file folder on the SSD or hard drive.
IMO backing up images prior to import into Aperture or any other images app is an essential step for a competent workflow.

  • Photos are printing too dark

Hi, I use Aperture 2.1.4 to edit my photos and my imac is running OSX 10.6.  I have recently purchased an EPSON Artisan 730 and am not sure what I am doing wrong but my photos are printing darker than they appear on the screen.
    The setting in Aperture are
    Paper size:  10x15cm
    Orientation:  landscape
    Colorsync profile:  PX830 730 Artisan837 730 Epson glossy
    Black point compensation not ticked
    gamma:  1.0
    sharpen amount: 0
    sharpen radius:  0
    scale to:  fill entire page
print resolution: use best dpi ticked
Please can you offer any suggestions or point me in the right direction.
    Thanks

Léonie kindly asked me to add to your thread.  Other than the links you'll find in the post of mine to which Léonie already linked (I don't sense that you've read them), I can make the strong suggestion that you upgrade Aperture to the current version (and upgrade to 10.6.8 or 10.7.x, too).  Apple has been steadily working on color and luminance fidelity (it's a difficult problem), and has made significant changes to the rendering of Images in the OS and in Aperture.
It is odd that you made no changes in the software calibration process.  Redo it?
Here are some general considerations to be aware of:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/17216135#17216135
And an even shorter summary here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/17539316#17539316
Don't be overly discouraged by the complexity of the topic.  With some work you should be able to get reliably close.  Whether "close" is close enough is for you to say.
I print (to Epson Printers, but that shouldn't matter) with "Rendering Intent" set to "Perceptual", and "Black Point compensation" checked.  The second is perhaps impossible to ascertain, but the first should change the luminance distribution visibly (depends on the photo).  These, however, are refinements.  You have to get "close" first.
Here is the first thing to check after confirming that your printer is working properly (sorry for quoting myself):
The quick answer -- now that you've got this far  -- is set your monitor brightness to something that appears gray rather than light.  This is probably close to the middle of the available range, and two or three steps lower than you might chose for comfortable viewing.  Implicit in that is that what is best for editing photos is often different from what is best for doing other work on a computer.

Photos are not adjustable in Aperture v.2.1.4.
    17200 photos can not adjust?
This applies to pictures before 02/28/1910?
All the pictures have a yellow mark with a ! in the bottom right of the picture.
Also appears in the box Badger.
Also get the message "Image not found"?
    What have I done?
    Help me.

    Hi all.
    Now everything is in order.
I had an upgrade of Aperture. It deleted a main folder called "All photos". Luckily I had saved the library to an extra hard drive. Imported the back and everything in order.
Was too much interested in looking at the World Championships in snooker. Sorry.
    Thank you would help me.

  • TS3989 Photos are ok in aperture and iphoto but in photostream on ipad and iphone the top of all portrait photos is chopped off. I tried switching photostream off and on but got the same. Only happened with photos added today, all past photos are fine

I have never had any problems before but all portrait photos added today have the top chopped off. For example , people's heads are missing or roofs or buildings are chopped off. Photos are fine on the camera and on my mac in iphoto and aperture. Switched off photostream on my ipad...all photos were deleted. Switched photostream back on and all photos uploaded again and portrait photos are cropped again

It sounds like while trying to import the photos with insufficient disk space those image files were damaged and not copied fully.  Now that you have sufficient space (a minimum of 10 GB is recommended) the latest imports are good.
What do you get if you export one of the problem photos out of iPhoto as Kind=Original and try to open it with Preview.  If it appears the same then there's nothing you can to do recover them.

  • RAW NEF files imported into Aperture from a Nikon D70 are dark

I imported one roll of images straight from the CF card from my Nikon D70 into Aperture.
I also imported them into Nikon PictureProject. (the current application I use)
All the NEF's in Aperture are darker than the NEF's in PictureProject. Has anyone else seen this issue?
Also, any NEF that I have previously edited and saved in Nikon Capture Editor, do not display any of the changes when imported into Aperture. Interesting that the Finder shows the thumbnail correctly. Has anyone else seen this issue?
    Thanks, Scott K.

I've imported a few of the NEF files I've gotten from my D2X, and for the most part, they look fine. A little darker than when displayed in Adobe Bridge and ACR, but not that much darker. This is probably just the way the image converter is interpreting the RAW data. A couple of minor levels adjustments for me, and they look fine.
As for Aperture not "seeing" the changes made to a RAW file in Nikon Capture. That may be due to the way Capture applies its changes to the file. If when you make a change, Capture simply adds the adjustments to a side car file, etc., and doesn't change the original RAW file (which it should never do), then Aperture is only reading the original RAW data. The side car info is not understood by Aperture. At least not now.
This is pretty much the same way ACR works.

Have a look at your import setting specifically Store Files:
Make sure it is set to where you want the originals to go.
Message was edited by: Frank Caggiano - Don;t empty the system trash. The originals that you deleted from the Desktop are in there and are the only copies you have unless they are still in the camera.

  • In "About this Mac" why are my aperture photos listed in "Other" vs "Photos"

After consolidating iPhoto pictures into Aperture Library - and having to rebuild library all photos are shown under "Other" in storage under About this Mac.  How do I get photos back into the Photo section.  I am sure this is why Aperture is running very slow.  Aperture library is on a 500 GB external USB hard drive.  Does anyone know how to get photos into the right spot in the storage.

Nothing in my experience would make me draw the same conclusion (that the reporting of your Aperture Library as "Other" is why Aperture is running slowly).  You report that your Library is on an external drive connected via USB.  Is this USB 2 or USB 3?
The consensus is to put your Library on your fastest (lowest latency and highest throughput) drive.  This is almost always your system drive.  If your Library does not fit on your system drive, you are advised to move some or all of your Images' Master from the Library to a second drive using "File→Relocate Masters".  If you want help with these set-ups, post back.
