If you recently did an upgrade to Yosemite (and if my memory is correct) you may have signed into FaceTime (without using it) as part of the upgrade.

Turned on my Mac Pro a few minutes ago and I got the following "POP-UP" message.
" Your Apple ID and phone number are now being used for iCloud on a new iPhone. " ( my iPhone is not new. )
" If you recently signed into "xxxxx iPhone" you can ignore this notification."
On the bottom of this pop-up window is an "OK" button. Well it's NOT "OK" No option is offered if it is not "OK".
I have made no changes to my iPhone whatsoever. Just normal use today. In my iCloud settings everything is turned off except sharing Contacts.
I'd suggest you log on to iCloud.com with your Apple ID, and then go to Settings and look in the "My Devices" settings for anything you don't recognize.
I just did this. All of the devices are iPhones, iPads, and Macintoshes that I own and am familiar with.

There are a couple of possibilities that may apply to the email you have received regarding your Apple ID. The first is that the email may be a legitimate warning that your Apple ID has been compromised. For this reason I would suggest that you change the password to your Apple ID as soon as possible. The second possibilty is that the email is an attempt at "phishing" in order to get you to reveal personal information. I've changed my password twice and logged in successfully to apple id but when it tries to connect to FaceTime it says unable to verify email address then says it sent a verification link but it didn't and then says check network connection (which is fine) ALso when I get an email about resetting password it addresses me as someone else not me.

It also says "If you just activated iMessage on a new iPhone, you can ignore this alert." But the only option is to ignore the alert, because the only thing I can do with it is click "ok" and dismiss it. Is there a way I can look at a list of the devices using my iMessage account, and if there are devices that I don't recognize on that list, how can I block them from using my account?

Strange popup: phone number being used for iMessage

Received a popup on my iPad that reads "your phone number is now being used for iMessage on a new phone, if you're recently signed into "my phone's name" you can ignore this notification. Only option was to hit "ok". IPad is wi-Fi only ( iMessage was on and email address toggled on, no phone number listed) iMessage is now off; phone listed both email and phone number (only phone number was checked) in iMessage (which I toggled off after receiving the notification). Any ideas of what happened? Running IOS 8.1 on iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. Thank you.

Exact same thing happened to me last night (Australia) I was using my iPad mini when this pop up message appeared and thought how odd, my iPhone was right next to me locked...
Thinking this this was odd I unlocked my phone and went to the App Store only to discover when it asked for my password it was changed!!

You will have to sign out from the iCloud preference pane and sign in with the new ID. Of course when you sign out all your iCloud data - email, calendars, contacts - will disappear from your Mac, assuming you have indeed been syncing them to the iCloud account you want to stop using. You can transfer the calendars and contacts manually, but you can't move the email addresses from one iCloud account to another.

HT4848 Is it possible to partition an external hard drive that is already being used for Time Machine backups without it being erased?

I'm want to use my current external hard drive, which I use for Time Machine Backup, as a recovery disk for Mac OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2. From what I have read, the recovery disk assistant will erase all data on the external drive unless it is partitioned. Can I partition my current backup drive without erasing it, even though it is already being used for Time Machine?

It's very simple to test. Turn off your computer. Have your time machine backup plugged in. Hold option and turn it on, keeping option held. Do you see your time machine drive? If so, select it and press enter. You'll end up in recovery. If it works, there you go. Then just click the apple and restart to get back to your regular desktop. Then you'll know for when you're ready to do the deed.

I'm not sure if time machine will think it's an entirely different computer, though, when a hard drive changed, making an actual restore not doable. Either way, you could still reinstall mt lion fresh and then just migrate after, skipping the need for SL.

Fairly new battery not charging after not being used for a while

My computer (Elitebook 2530p) has not been used for a while, perhaps a month or two. The battery used to hold for over 3 hours of light use.
Now, the battery won't charge with the message "0% available (plugged in, not charging)"
I can't find a battery refresh utility in the BIOS, or any way to interact with the battery. Is there something I'm missing? Should the battery just go dead after not being used for a while?
Update: fixed typo

I've run the HP battery check and got the code REOOW. Battery is dead, and I am out of warranty. I can't think of any possible reason why this should have happened.

What is the best way to hook up my new Apple TV3. Just arrived and can't believe I have to wait and figure this out.
I do not have a HDMI slot available. Our TV has one HDMI slot that is being used for our cable.
What are the best options ot look at to get this all to work?

1. Splitting HDMI (if this works and is possible). Best way to do this?
2. Switching my cable over to component (not sure I want to do this).

Switching your cable box to component video (NOT "composite") is an outstanding idea. You will also have to connect audio cables between your STB and TV. As long as the analog hole remains available, you will not notice any loss of quality compared to the HDMI connection. Just configure your cable box to output 1080i or 720p all the time, whatever is appropriate for your TV. In fact, I have a Sony TV that emits loud pops when changing channels while the cable box is hooked up to it via HDMI, but it's nice and silent when using the analog connections.
