It sounds like you have a hacked/unofficially unlocked iphone. When you update, it will indeed lock it back, as it should.
The ONLY place that can legitimately unlock an iphone is the carrier to which they are locked and no U.S. carrier does this. -

Sorry for your loss. Basically when it comes to stolen / lost units what we can do is flag your unit as stolen. If you file a police report with the local authorities, you can then call sony technical support, fax in the police report and we will log your unit stolen in our file. If someone happened to send it in for service etc we can recover it that way. -

When I try to open itunes it says that it won't open woithout Apple Application Support and says I need to uninstall and reinstall itunes. 2 things I'm afraid will happen.

2. He might lose all his playlists and also even if he doesn't los his itunes library he might lose data and information about all the songs.

I was using my ipod at night then all of a sudden on the sceen it said ipod has been locked then it said my phone number and it said call me or the police will. To import pictures from phone to computer you do not use itunes (you only use itunes to put them back on the iphone). Your computer should recongize the iphone as a camera capable device and allow you to import pictures.
If on a Windows > click start button > click computer > and under computer there should be your iphone listed > right click on it and hit import pictures and videos
