My Apple software is a nightmare lately
I've always been really happy with my Macs and the software's been a dream to use.
Until Leopard that is.
I always keep my software up to date, as soon as software update wants to download and install I always stand back and let it do it's thing.
My problems started with Mail. Then the address book. Now it extends to iTunes and my iPods.
Mail : This thing refuses to quit. 9 out of 10 times that I ask mail to quit, I end up having to force quit it. So many times has it stopped shut down of the Mac.. I am getting tired of this.
Today I sent an extremely urgent mail to a client, two hours later he called me and asked "Uh.. where's my email man?" Turns out mail had frozen. After a force quit and a relaunch, the mail was sent. No error message, nothing.. It just froze without me knowing.
This is after the notorious missing new mail sound bug that was fixed an update or two ago.
Nothing funny about my configuration, I have two accounts, Mobile Me and Gmail, the Gmail keeps on asking me for the mailbox password, but that's a problem with Google, no Apple (I hope).
Address Book : I have a friend who since the day I upgraded to Leopard has vanished from my address book. I keep on adding him with the same contact details and a different name, but the next time I sync anything, including Mobile Me, POOF! He's gone again.
For some or other reason, iCal has never been able to pick up his birthday either. But that's been a problem since Tiger.
iTunes : This thing freezes almost daily. The interface turns into a white block on the screen and it's over from there.
My iPods have to be restored on a monthly basis - and they aren't used that often either. There are only two iPods, and iPod classic and a 1st Gen iPod touch both with the latest software.
My question :
Why is all of this happening all of a sudden? This is the exact reason that I own 2 Macs instead of the 15 PCs I could have bought with the money they cost me.
Is Apple crashing? Are we on a fiery path to just another Microsoft "if it can't be good at least make it look good - Bill Gates" company?
I want answers as to what's up with this. It's slowing me down and making me angrier every day.

Regardless of keeping your software up to date, it can still be slowly damaged over normal use. Brownouts, power surges, bad RAM (which can result in corrupt data when paging out to disk, though such information is temporary). A frozen app can damage any files it had open, including those belonging to the OS if it uses them to function, by having a write operation stop midway.
I myself just had an issue where Entourage was acting weird, and just in one function. Reapplying the 10.5.6 Combo update resolved the issue by replacing system files with new ones.
I would suggest this.
1) Boot to your OS X installation disk and run a Repair Disk to make sure the drive isn't having issues with a damaged file structure. If you have it, use DiskWarrior as it is better suited to this task.
2) Do an Archive and Install of the OS from your original disks. Then apply the 10.5.6 Combo Update.

No access to store, AppleMobile Service takes up 99 percet of CPU usage, so nothing else starts, and finally not one song, video, or app imported,..... Back up and running with version 10.4.1.10
Had to select and import my iTunes Music and Video folders, then go to the iTunes store to re-download all purchased APPS but at least I have access and an operational program.
What a nightmare. Maybe Apple should compensate us for the insane amount of frustration and man hours involved for what I would consider malicious software upgrade they have provided over the last three updates. -

I've given up, time and time again on trying to play various video's whether from an online community or via CD/DVD file. Searches offer countless non-Apple software solutions that all have inconsistent functionality. Is there an Apple product that will actually work? I have this problem with all my Apple Mac products, even the newest iMac which according to the salesman would work "no problem". Friends indicate they have never experienced this problem, but based on all the returns on internet searches I suspect I'm not the only one.
I am not a computer savy person. I just need to plug in and have the machine do what it should do.

Not a problem, but that indicates you have a lot to learn.
File extensions like mpeg, mp4., avi, wmv, etc. are just wrappers. It is like a box the audio or video content is placed inside. The audio and video content must be encoded with a codec before it is placed in the box. There are thousands of codecs. Not all are installed on your Mac. You must have the same codec installed that encoded the video in order to play it. So, while Quicktime does support mpeg wrapper, it may not have the codecs to decode the internal video.
Some programs have lots of the codecs available to them, like VLC, Niceplayer, MPlayerX, etc.
You can also get "plug-ins" for Quicktime that add codecs to Quicktime, like Perian. Although it is no longer being developed, Perian still works well.
Why is it so difficult? Probably because they are always working on ways to compress the video to get better playback. -
I have recently upgraded the new Apple software and now when I purchased new songs they show up in my tunes library However, I cannot transfer or download them to my iPod shuffle...any help is appreciated..my son is having the same problem downloading to his iPhone 4.

Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..

I am endeavouring to upgrade iTunes. The upgrade always stalls at a point where there is a need to access Apple Software Updater, which is reported as no longer being available on my network. In My Programs, I have a folder called Apple Software Updater, to which I can browse, but within which I cannot trigger any action. Instructions suggest uninstalling iTunes, then Quicktime, then Apples Software updater, at which the de-installation process stalls as it cannot be found, whilst being there. I am advised to seek Techical Support!
Any ideas, suggestions etc?

I am trying to update to iTunes 10 to us my new iPad, but I can not remove a corrupted? "apple software update" program... I can get everything else off, but due to "previous version" of software update it will not continue.
I stopped in to see one of the genius at the local store who referred me to "Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable" (I am trying to install it on a Windows XP System)
The last version on iTunes on my PC was iTunes 7.

Julia from WoodridgeUnfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try installing iTunes again. Does the install go through properly now?
(If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.) -
When I run the Apple Software update, it tells me that iCloud and iTunes have invalid signature and will not be downloaded. When I DL iTunes64setup.exe, the program will not start (there's a bar that flashes but nothing actually begins). I've done everything short of reinstalling Windows to fix this (system resore, unistalling all Apple products, taking down firewall, running Windows FixIt - which either won't find the problem or gives me an error saying that the troubleshooter cannot be downloaded at this time, going into the security features to allow programs without valid signatures, trying to install earlier versions of iTunes). It all started when I downloaded the Decemberists new album on my iPhone, and it wasn't downloading it properly so I connected it to my Dell, but some songs still wouldn't DL - also, the newest OS for my iPhone still won't install via WiFi - and so I uninstalled iTunes first, but nothing is helping. And I don't have any security issues (Norton has checked). Any ideas? I'm at my wit's end after 3 days of this. Thank you.
Ok, so after like 4 days of going through all these different issues, I figured out that several programs weren't downloading, and it was an issue with my wireless connectivity messing up the digital signatures, so if you plug in your comp to the modem and delete your temp files, it should start to work!

I can't uninstall Apple Software Update.
In trying to uninstall ITunes, I was given a checklist from Apple Support to uninstall certain programs in a specific order. I need to reinstall ITunes, and they said that I needed to remove it first. I am running a Windows 7, 64 bit HP laptop. No program is removing this and it very specifically says to not remove them out of order.
Below are the instructions sent to me. (I tried to copy and paste. However, it doesn't look good, so I will include the link that Apple sent to me.)

Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
Learn how to completely uninstall iTunes and its related software components from Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8.
In some rare instances, you might need to remove iTunes and related software components before reinstalling iTunes. If you're directed to reinstall iTunes by AppleCare, an article, or an alert dialog, you can do so by following the steps below.
If you're running Windows XP, see Removing and Reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows XP.
Media you've bought from the iTunes Store or songs you've imported from CDs are saved in your My Music folder by default. They won't be deleted by removing iTunes. Although it's highly unlikely that you'll lose any of your iTunes Library when following the steps below, first make sure that your iTunes library is backed up. See iTunes: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive for more information.
If you have issues installing iTunes, try the options outlined in Issues installing iTunes for Windows.

Follow these steps if the message "Cannot delete iPodService.exe: It is being used by another person or program" appears when you try to delete the iPod folder.
Make sure that iTunes and the iPod Updater utility aren't open.
Press and hold Control-Alt-Delete.
Select Start Task Manager.
Click the Processes tab.
Locate the iPodService.exe in the list.
Click iPodService.exe and choose End Process.
Quit the Task Manager.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. iTunes 12.1.0.71 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) - itunes64setup.exe (2015-01-28)
which is a 64-bit installer for the 32-bit version of the core application, similar to previous 64-bit releases. Or roll back to the previous build:

Check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. If the box next to: Open in 32 bit mode is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari to test.
If that wasn't the issue, try using OpenDNS.
Use OpenDNS for better speed, more security, prevents the, "can't connect to server" issue, includes anti phishing filters, prevents browser re directs, and it's free.
Open System Preferences / Preferences then select the Network tab. Click the Advanced tab then click the DNS tab.
Click +
Enter these addresses exactly as you see them here.

When I double click iTunes, the computer thinks briefly (hourglass) then does nothing. iTunes won't load.
QuickTime Player opens fine.
But Apple Software Update now gives me a strange error message.
Anybody know how to interpret it? Might it be linked to my iTunes not loading?

Husband tells me iTunes updated last night on both his and my laptops (same OS), without asking for confirmation, which I thought was unusual. Tried opening iTunes various times today and no response. Restarted and still no improvement.
Tried repairing and uninstalling iTunes, very slow and glitchy but eventually seemed to have got rid of the software. Downloaded most recent installer link from Apple website and attempted reinstall, but it didn't get past the empty-barred status window.
Aborted and found an old installer from earlier back-up - version 10.2 something. Install appeared to run smoothly but I still can't actually open iTunes.
Any help appreciated as we now have two laptops that won't shut down properly (seems they think iTunes is still running, even though we can't access it or close it in Task Manager), 2 iPhone 4s and an iPad that we can't use properly!

I Installed the Apple Software Installer 1.0 Update Tonight

I am not sure if this latest Software Update messed things up, but there are a lot of problems with my MBP now that I just noticed tonight after I installed this Apple Software Installer Update 1.0.
First off I am unable to watch any of the online videos like CBS nightly News, some of the BBC News Videos, as far as I can tell anything that shows its content on a video screen from the companies website. I updated Flash Player about 2 weeks ago to the current version because I started keepng Flash updated to the current version, someting I wish I would have never started. when I went to CBSnews.com, clicked on CBS Evening News, nothing (not even a video screen) shoes up but in small letters it says Please Upgrade Your Adobe Flash Player. According to adobe Flash (current versions for MacOS-Safari) I have the correct Flash version and I have watched these news broadcasts seveeral nights on ABC, CBS, and many other videos on mostly news websites. On ABC I noticed it tonight since I installed this Apple Software Installer 1.0 Update, it shows a blank video screen but in the middle it says, "This content requires Adobe Flash Player - Ver 10.1. (on top) and on the bottom is a link that says " Click here to get the latest version of Flash."
The latest version of Flash for a Mac using Safari is what I installed about 2 weeks ago and is 11.1.102.64. I am not sure what ABC means by 10.1. The versions confuse me, especially if I look in Safari under "Help"--> "Installed Plug-Ins", it usually just gives the first couple of numbers, but now I cannot even bring up "Installed Plug Ins" under Safari---Help---Installed Plug-Ins. it just gives me a blank screen.
Is it possible to uninstall an installed update? it is a major deal. any suggestions on what I should try? I know people who hate Adobe Flash (seems like there are a lot) will say get rid of Adone Flash. But whay would it stop showing me what is on the Installed Plug-Ins Page? Before, I just did this the other night, I open a new tab, go to Help on Safari's Menu bar to Help, then Installed Plug-Ins and it usually fills up the blank New Tab page with all the Installed Plug-ins. Down toward the end it will show me that Shockwave Player, I think Mac calls it is installed, and it just gives the first few numbers of the current version that is installed. Now I get no Installed Plug-Ins.

I was going to repair permissions, but I have only ever done that using the Operating Disk. that is how I was taught by a genius bar person several years ago, and I just kept up with it. when I repair permissions using Disk Utility from the dock, let's say I do a test run and 20 permissions come up, I repair them and nothing changes, but if I use the OS disk and repair the permissions, if there are a lot it will get rid of them all but it usually takes 2 runs at it. I know this is different from what most others say,I use Firefox 95% of the time, and there's no problem with flash content (and I'm still at .55 - downloaded .64 last week but I haven't got round to making the change yet). At the rate they've been changing it recently it may well be out of date already .
I've been trying it in Safari, too with no problems apart from You Tube, but that's because I'm blocking Google cookies.
One thought does occur - if your Flash preferences are set to block all Local Storage, it may be that the problem site is trying to use Flash cookies (LSOs). I had this problem recently with the BBC iPlayer streaming content. Little Snitch notified an attempt to connect to a new URL - emp.bbci.co.uk.
If I disallowed it, no streaming; when I allowed the connection, it still wouldn't stream, so I did a bit of digging and came to the conclusion that it was trying to set a Flash cookie. When I unblocked, lo and behold - streaming resumed as normal.
I now have LSOs blocked in a more subtle way that lets the site think it's being set (but it ain't) and the streaming still works.
As for permissions repair - always repair from local; the permissions on the original disc will have been superceded by updates and new installations of Apple software.
DU needs to be reading the packages on the HD, not the (now out of date) install disc.
The recurring repair messages are normal and don't mean anything's wrong. As long as the final message is 'repair complete' there's no need to dwell on it.

When i try to uninstall Apple software update it brings up a message saying "There is a problem with this Windows installer package. A program requirement for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." I believe i have Windows VISTA. Yes i know its old but i have not had the money or time to update.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

How can I sort my photos within albums on the iPad? Apple software *****!
The primary reason I got an iPad was to use it as a portfolio of my photography. How is it possible that with Apple software you can't easily sort photos in a custom order within albums?!? I've heard there is a way to use Dropbox to work around (ignore) Apple software. Any help? If Apple engineers are reading this, can you please address this? And can we not use something called iTunes to work with pictures? No sense here.
It's a lot easier with Photo Manager Pro.
