My Apple TV is taking ages to download movies what is wrong?

My apple TV is right next to the wifi modem but is still taking 24 hours to download one movie. My wifi is probably not the problem as all my other devices are working on it fine. What is wrong and how can i fix it?

What is your current connection via speedtest.net?
Make sure DNS is set to auto (settings - general - network)
Other devices working doesn't rule out a wifi issue. Trying ethernet will help verify this. It will also help to get a network report by going to istumbler, netstumbler or similar and look for signal strength as well as any noise detected.

  • Taking hours to download movies!! Help!!

Taking hours to download movies, it would be quicker for me to go to blockbusters! And probably cheaper.

What is your actual internet speed?

I would either say that the iOS is correpted due to a software glitch or y have have a hardware problem like bad memory locations that are corrupting the iOS.
    - Restore from backup via iTunes. This will install a fresh copy of the iOS. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.   This will elimate corruptin in the backup causing the problem.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

Definitely sounds like an issue with your Wi-Fi network. Do any other devices on the network have similar issues? Is it an issue only with downloading apps? You can check by trying to load a website in Safari.
I would try turning your Wi-Fi router off for 1 minute, and back on again.
After doing that, disconnect and re-join the Wi-Fi network on your iPhone and try downloading an app again.

  • Apple TV - No voice tracks on downloaded movies

OK, I have a strange problem. On movies downoaded to my MacBook, when I try to play them through my Apple TV3, the picture is fine, the music and sound effects come through loud and clear, but the human voices are either very, very faint or absent entirely. All other functions of the Apple TV work fine. Any idea of what could cause this and how it might be fixed?

You said the Optical to the home theatre doesn't work, do you mean it had the same sound issue or that the OA to Home Theatre didn't produce any sound?  If the latter then first check the cable is working (red light on the tip once the other end is in the ATV).
Sorry I am not addressing the main question of poor sound as others will know that better, but the OA issue might be solvable and improve your listening, unless of course you have rented The Artist

  • Why is my iphone 4s taking AGES to download and update apps... 3 days!!

I bought a new iphone 4S 3 days ago. I previously had an iphone 4. Before buying the new 4S I had several apps that needed updating, but that were taking a while. For a few of the apps the following message appeared 'Unable to download application: "Instagram" could not be downloaded at this time. Done. Retry.'. I had presumed it was the iphone 4 as I had been having a few problems with it being a little slower, before I decided to go an upgrade. However, I am having the same problem with the 4S, though I have persevered so far... It has taken 3 days with no end in sight. I don't know if it could be my wifi- but I always get good signal... Should I just delete the apps and re-download them???

It sounds like it's stuck.  If you changed Wifi networks since starting the restore, this is probably the issue. Once you are at a location where you are going to be for a while, go to Settings > General > Reset > erase All Content & Settings > Erase iPhone.  On the set up screens that appear next, connect to Wi-Fi and choose Restore from iCloud Backup and start the restore again.  Stay on that same Wi-Fi next work until all of you photos are loaded and in Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup you should see "Backup Now" indicating the restore is complete.  If you see "Stop Restoring" then continue to stay on the same Wi-Fi until it is complete.
If you have been on the same Wi-Fi since you started restoring the first time and never went out of range, etc. then find another Wi-Fi network if that keeps happening after you try to restore once more per the instructions above.

  • Apple TV won't play my downloaded movie

I just got an Apple TV 3 a couple weeks ago, have already successfully downloaded one movie and watched it with no problems.  I downloaded another (Hunger Games) movie this week and when I turned my Apple TV on to watch it, it said "Hunger Games is now ready to watch, click to play" however when I click to play it says it will be ready to play in 28 hours or so.  The movie is completely downloaded so I am not sure why it won't play.  I have tried resetting my Apple TV and unplugging it and the router.  Puchased all movies through iTunes.  Please let me know if you have any suggestions! Thank you!

Use Google’s Public DNS Server To Fix Apple TV Streaming Problems
    1. Navigate to Settings >> General >> Network and select Configure TCP/IP.
    2. Select “Manually” next to Configure IP.
    3. Dont change the IP address or the Subnet Mask and Router Address. Just click "Done".
    4. Set the DNS Address screen with the following: 008.008.008.008 and click “Done.”
You should now be able to stream more smoothly on your Apple TV.
If this works for you, please buy a cup of coffee for a complete stranger or some other selfless, random act of kindness.

  • Apple TV is a Joke when downloading movie from iTunes

I attempted to download a movie from iTunes as a rental. It has taken 3 nights. Every time I go into iTunes to watch my movie it starts the download process all over again. Last weekend, 5+ hours to download. Let it run overnight tried to watch it this past Saturday. Again, started to to download from the begining, 5+ hours and I again let it download over night. Attempted to watch again, stated to download from the very begining again, another 5+ hours. Today, I tried to watch my movie, it is not downloaded. Trying to download for another 4+ hours. To boot, it now says I have 23 hours left to watch my movie.
Using Apple TV 2 --> using a ethernet cord.

That is likely contributing to your issue. Especially if it is not consistent. 6mbps is required for instant HD, you can check to SD in the settings. Did you check for interference via ethernet and www.istumbler.net or how did you come to that conclusion?
Here is some info on DNS
    Verify DNS and network settings
If you are experiencing abnormal wait times when attempting to purchase or rent on your Apple TV, it could be due to changes made to your network settings (such as the DNS address on your Apple TV and/or router or base station). You should use the default DNS entry supplied by your ISP, on both your Apple TV and router. Changing the DNS entry may result in a longer time before playback begins. Also, you should configure your Apple TV to use DHCP for the network setup, unless you have a custom network with specifically-assigned IP addresses.
To configure your Apple TV to use DHCP, from the main menu, go to Settings > General > Network > Configure TCP/IP. In the Network Setup page, select the "Automatically" option.
Once you've confirmed that your Apple TV and router or base station are using DHCP without a custom DNS entry, power-cycle your Apple TV, router or base station, and broadband Internet modem.

  • 30 minutes to download? What is wrong??

I have a mac book pro - four months old and I have downloaded one episode of a cartoon for my child and it took 30 minutes? I have in the past on our pc downloaded episodes of law and order - the entire series - and this took only 15 minutes. I am once again trying to download an episode of sponge bob and it is taking 40 minutes!! This is ridiculous! I have a broadband connection! What is the problem?

    Hi mamasings,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Apple recently improved the resolution of TV Shows from 320 by 240 to 640 by 480. This has increased the size of the file that download by 4.
    That may be one reason.

  • H.264 - Taking forever to encode?  What's wrong?

I have captured some video of my desktop using iShowU, which basically makes a Quicktime of everything that happens on your desktop including a mic input. I used the Apple Intermediate Codec to capture the material. The size of the vid is 1900 x 1250 (75% of the full size 30" display desktop).
I imported this recording direct into FCP and did some quick edits, now I'm trying to export them using compressor as quicktime files that will be distributed on a CD.
The export happens and the final quality is fine, but the export is taking FOREVER. I've done video editing before and this seems way too long to export. Here are the specs...
    - It is taking about 15 minutes to export 1 minute of video. This is way way way too long.
    - I'm running a new Mac Pro, 2.66 Quad Core, 5GB of Ram with high speed drives - this machine should scream through this encode job. Activity monitor is showing about 130% processor activity from Compressor, and another 90% or so from Final Cut Pro. I think it should peg the processors a bit higher than that.
Here are the exact settings I'm using in Compressor:
    Name: Test 1 QuickTime Movie
    Description: No description
    File Extension: mov
    Audio Encoder
    IMA 4:1, Stereo (L R), 44.100 kHz
    Video Encoder
    Format: QT
    Width: 1900
    Height: 1250
    Pixel aspect ratio: square
    Crop: None
    Frame rate: (100% of source)
    Frame Controls:
    Retiming: Nearest Frame
    Resize Filter: Nearest Pixel
    Deinterlace Filter: Line Averaging
    Adaptive Details: Off
    Antialias: 0
    Detail Level: 0
    Field Output: Progressive
    Codec Type: H.264
    Multi-pass: On, frame reorder: On
    Pixel depth: 24
    Spatial quality: 74
    Min. Spatial quality: 25
    Key frame interval: 24
    Temporal quality: 50
    Min. temporal quality: 25
    Fast Start: on
    Brightness And Contrast
    Brightness: 6.600000
    Contrast: 11.600000
I am running that one Bright/Contrast filter, but that shouldn't take up that much extra power should it? Surely I have something wrong here. The export frame rate, size (pixel demensions) and everything else are exactly the same as the source material from what I can tell.
I'm going to have about 15 total hours of footage to export and from what I can tell using these settings - that's nearly 10 straight days of encoding, and that ain't gonna' work.
    Thanks!!!

H.264 is much slower codec than many other ones.
And, at those giant frame sizes, it wouldn't
surprise me to see such long encode times.
More than six hours ago, I took four short (six minutes or so each) Flash video files to Compressor 3 and sent this batch to transcode to H.264. The first clip went off merrily and the Activity Monitor showed 145% activity of the CPU. It was done in 13 minutes, the second ckip took 14 minutes and the remaining two clips are still there with very little progress in transcoding. The Activity Monitor shows from five to 10 per cent Compressor usage of the CPU.
This is definitely not due to "giant frame sizes". Somewhere along the way Compressor 3 slowed down dramatically.

  • I am having problems with downloading files, what is wrong and what can I do?

When I try to download a file (ex: file from mediafire) when it gets the windows that lets me choose where to save the file, the window closes and FF automatically downloads the file to a certain place...(last place file was save too)

My apple TV is not working. The light blinks but the TV only shows the apple picture and nothing happens. Any idea why?

    James,
Thank you for the information. I did what you said but it is still not working. My apple box works with my wifi so I think the wife was disconnected and I can't figure out where to go to set up the wifi pass word for the apple box. Any hits would be appreciated if not my next step is to ship back the box to apple.
    Thanks,
