My Apple TV just deleted a huge number of my shows

I own 3 Apple TVs all connected to the same iTunes on my main computer. Until now I've had no problems syncing across all my Apple TVs and purchases made on one TV happily transfer over to the other ones.
Recently I ran out of space on my computer, so it is possible that not all my shows were getting backed up on to the computer. So I cleared a bunch of stuff off the drive to make room. At around the same time I added my third Apple TV to the network and told it to sync.
Today I went to watch some episodes that I haven't seen yet, and they weren't on my original Apple TV. So I went down to my computer and found all my episodes but they were gray with a little sync icon next to them.
For some reason, instead of syncing my missing purchased shows from my Apple TV on to my computer it erased the shows from my Apple TV. They are listed on my computer but the files are not there. I have paid for these shows and now I can't watch them.
This is clearly a sync bug. How do I convince iTunes to re-download them?

Hi Winston, thanks for the reply.
I realise that under normal circumstances Apple's policy is that you can only download purchased content once, and that it is the user's responsibility to back up any purchased media. However in this case, a clearly demonstrable bug has occurred on my Apple TV, which has deleted my content through no user error.
My TV is connected to a Mac Pro. My Mac Pro is automatically backed up over the network to a time machine capable airport extreme drive.
I'm sorry I used the word "sync" to describe the transfer from my TV to my computer, I didn't intend to muddy the issue. So here's what happened:
I purchase about $100 worth of TV on my TV every month, which is usually transferred back to my computer immediately.
On about the 16th of June, the hard drive on my itunes computer filled up, and the transfers stopped.
On abut the 17th of July, I noticed that the hard drive was full and that about 85 TV episodes were waiting to transfer to my mac. The TV had successfully reported every purchase and put the info about each episode into my itunes library, but it had not yet transferred the actual file.
These episodes appear as a line in my listing that is in gray text with a tiny gray sync icon in the left column. I am sure it is not an exclamation mark, which would indicate a missing media file, it is a sync icon (a gray circle with two white arrows circulating inside). This icon is the gray version of the orange icon that animates while downloading a file from the itunes store. This icon indicates a file that is waiting to download but is not currently downloading. In this case the download is coming from the TV, instead of the store.
When I noticed that the hard drive on my computer was full, I cleared some space on it. The files I deleted were nothing to do with iTunes, they were old Final Cut project files that were taking up a lot of space.
Instead of resuming the transfers from my TV to my computer when the space became available, the TV deleted all the files which had not yet been transferred. The iTunes library on my computer is still waiting for those files. It is still trying to get them from my TV, but they aren't there anymore.
I cannot delete the items from my iTunes library, because they haven't transferred over yet. Selecting one of these lines and pressing delete does nothing.
This is a bug. My iTunes library clearly shows the files which it is waiting for, and my TV no longer has them. The devices are out of sync, and there doesn't appear to be any way to solve the problem.
Even if I spend $170 re-purchasing all the episodes that have been deleted (I haven't even watched most of them) I will forever have two copies in my itunes library, the ghost one and the 2nd purchase.
I'm not looking for a way to find the files, they are gone forever, deleted before their time. I want to report the bug, and I want the files to be made available to download again, or $170 credited to my itunes account. I followed all instructions. I didn't use my TV as a backup device, I backed up all my systems, I did everything right. And I paid for all my purchases. This is $170 worth of stuff that just got deleted.
I'm not mad, I know bugs happen. I am a software developer, I wrote I have several hundred thousand users of my own, each with their own specialised hardware device, which I have to support. I know a bug when I see one. In this case, I'd just like to get credited for the shows that were deleted by the bug or have them made available for download again. Apple has a policy for dealing with download errors, and this is no different except that the error happened after download.

  • How do I delete a huge number of duplicate albums from my itunes for mac library?

I have a huge itunes music library, over 900 GB, and as it turns out I have a huge number of duplicate albums.  Is there a way to automatically get rid of the duplicate albums so I am left with only one of each?  If not, what is the best way to identify and remove my library's duplicate albums?  Thanks!
    Cheers,
    Gerry

iTunes does not have any automated way of deleting duplicates.
You can identify the duplicates by
    View > Show Duplicates
    or
Alt + View > Show exact Duplicates
(or if you are on windows Shift+ View > Show Exact duplicates
There is a third party tol which is free to download and then register. Although the copy I tried worked fine as a trial download

  • Apple has just deleted my alias - which I was using as my main email address.  They deny me creating a new one for 7 days.  How can I get in touch with Apple so that they repair what they have broken?

Has anyone had a problems with their alias today?
Apple has deleted mine today; causing me a major headache as they deleted the alias that I use as my main email address.
What happened exactly, is that the @icloud.com alias remained, but the @me.com disapeared.  So that the John.Smith alias became valid only for [email protected], but [email protected] disapeared.
To try to restore the situation, I deleted the alias, with the hope of re-creating it: but bad luck, that option is not open to me as I have had 5 aliases active till today, and they now only give you 3, and even once I had deleted 2, they would not allow me to set-up a new one for 7 DAYS.
I can't be without email for 7DAYS, care of Apple.  Calling AppleCare does not seem to help, and the line gets dropped once I have explained the problem.
Please help me raise someone at Apple to fix this.

  • IPhoto 8.1.2, OS10.6.8, library huge - can I just delete it?

OK - tried searching for this but can't find a specific answer.
My 2009 MacBook Pro has Mountain Lion 10.6.8 running it, with iPhoto 8.1.2 installed.
I am trying to clean up my MacBook in preparation for installing Mavericks 10.8. But I barely have room left for the Mavericks download of 5GB.
Am researching how to remove apps in this forum and on the web to regain space, but my biggest issue for HDD space is the iPhoto library (I used 'Disk Inventory X' to find the biggest hogs, it was recommended elsewhere in the Apple discussions section).
Anyway, the library is just *awfully* huge. Like a quarter to third of the 500GB drive! Price I pay for having two little kids that I over-document, I guess.
I have copied the "originals" and "modified" folders from within the library to an external drive, so I can now safely erase the copies on the MacBook without data loss.
So, here's what I need to know:
    1) Can I just delete the entire library? I know it will make iPhoto mad, but won't iPhoto just automatically rebuild it's needed file structure on a reboot and relaunch?, Since it won't find any images to load it would just create an empty library? Don't quite know how 'smart' iPhoto would be if it's library got removed...
    2) If that won't work, what will? The thing's just too big to stay on the laptop - gotta go.
and last but not too critical 3) If anyone knows of a good mid-level summary of how iPhoto does it's thing regarding the library files setup it has, please post a link - I'd like to understand it, but the info I find is scattered and most often either too basic or *way* to deep.
    Thanks, all.
    Hoping for a reply....

I have copied the "originals" and "modified" folders from within the library to an external drive, so I can now safely erase the copies on the MacBook without data loss.
Make a current backup of your mac, before you start such a massive delete. You will not want to risk the photos of your kids.
Then copy your complete iPhoto Library to the external drive, not just the originals and modified folder. Otherwise you will no longer have the references to the albums, books, your descriptions, keywords, you will have lost all work you invested into your photos.
Then launch iPhoto with the options-key ⌥ held down and select to open the iPhoto library on the external drive. Give it a test run, to see, if it is working.
Only if this succeeds, delete the library from your internal drive.
    3) I'll look for a tutorial, but right now I don't know of any. But actually, you do not really need to know, how iPhoto organizes the library. Only iPhoto need to be able to find files inside. For the users are many different ways provided, to access the photos inside. Just keep the library intact as an entity. To access the photos, see Terence Devlin's User Tips:                   How to Access Files in iPhoto
This most recent user Tip explains how iPhoto stores the photos and how to backup the Library and to keep it safe:                   iPhoto and File Management.

  • I just put my serial number in to have someone call me about an issue, and it says my serial number is not valid.  I copied it from the apple in the top corner.  Any thoughts?

Apple Support is saying my serial number is invalid, and I copied from the desktop itself.  Any suggestions as to why this would happen?

When you say you copied it from the desktop do you mean Apple Menu > About this Mac > More Info?
If your Mac is 5 years old or older it is considered Vintage or Obsolete and Apple no longer offers support. Instead of telling you it will often just say the serial number is invalid.
What model/year is your Mac? You can also try entering your serial number on this website: http://appleserialnumberinfo.com/Desktop/index.php see what it comes up with.

  • Have 1 POP3 email account I want to work like IMAP email in icloud. Apple suggested created a new Apple ID just for POP3. Has anyone tried this to see if it works and will delete across multiple devises?

Have 1 POP3 email account I want to work like IMAP email in icloud (keeps my iMac, iPhone, ipad mail in sync). Apple suggested trying creating a new Apple ID just for that POP3 email. Has anyone tried this to see if it works and will delete/update across multiple devises? Would mean keeping up with two Apple ID accounts but only other alternative I know of is paying for monthly service for Microsoft 365.

would I be able to "upload" (not sure how else to say it) my existing folders and subfolders containing all my emails so that they are all available on my new IMAP service, while still being available on my Mac?
Not easily, no. There's no direct transfer option between POP and IMAP, especially across email providers. The best you could do would be to forward all of your emails to your new address, although it's not clear that you need to - dropping your sbcglobal.net account doesn't instantly render all your existing mail void - it'll still be in your Mail client, you can still read it, search it, etc., it just won't be on your provider's server.
I have toyed with the idea of getting a MobileMe account. Would that solve my issue/question above?
MobileMe would be viable, especially if you're interested in synching your various iOS devices. It's not free, of course, unlike Yahoo and Gmail, although you've already discounted them...
I have also toyed with purchasing my own URL, but it's hard to tell from the sites (1and1, Namecheap, etc.) if they come with IMAP email accounts included.
Some registrars offer email hosting bundles with a domain registration. This could be a good way to go. GoDaddy, for example, have a email hosting option for domains you register with them.

The new machine has Mavericks which is fine. And I will leave it as is. I don’t want anything from my old machine other than 2 apps that I will need on the new one. I want to be able to install those apps that I bought from the App Store onto my new computer. I assume Apple doesn’t want me to have the apps installed on 2 machines at the same time so I wonder if just uninstalling them from my old machine will release them for re-install on the new one.

    Thanks for your help!

    Hello Blisshous,
It sounds like you have a user account named Ghost, that you want to delete all content from and remove from the computer. This article will help you do that named:
OS X Lion: Delete a user account
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3867
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Users & Groups or click Parental Controls.
Click the lock icon to unlock it, and then type an administrator name and password.
Select the user account you want to delete, and then click Delete below the account list.
    Do one of the following:
Select “Save the home folder in a disk image” to save the folder as a disk image in /Users/Deleted Users/.
Select “Don’t change the home folder” to leave the home folder in /Users/.
Select “Delete the home folder” to remove it from the computer. If you want to prevent programs that read raw data from retrieving any files, select “Erase home folder securely.”
    Click OK.
Keep in mind, if you remove the user and delete the data, without Time Machine you will not be able to restore any data from it in the future.

I change phones and i am not getting regular txt messages because somehow the messages are still sending through imessage which i no longer have.... I deleted my phone number from the account though as per instructiions from the phone carrier and is still not working...Any help?

    Hello jn_andrade,
It sounds like you are no longer getting text messages becuase your Apple ID is still using your phone number for iMessage. I would use these steps to unlink your phone number from your account:
    Unlink a phone number
To remove a phone number from an Apple ID, sign out of FaceTime and Messages on your iPhone:
Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
Settings > FaceTime. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
This should remove your phone number from other devices using the same Apple ID with FaceTime and Messages. If the phone number is still available on other devices after you sign out of FaceTime and iMessage on the iPhone, you may need to sign out of iMessage and FaceTime on all your devices, then sign in to FaceTime and Messages again on devices you want to use.
Note: If you no longer have access to the iPhone that is using the number you want to remove, reset your Apple ID password.
From: iOS and OS X: Link your phone number and Apple ID for use with FaceTime and iMessage

can i track my apple device just by knowing the serial number ? my Idevice has been stolen but i did not activate ''find my Iphone'' on it and now i'm wondering if i could find my iphone just by knowing the serial number

Unfortunately, no.  The serial number will only help you file a claim with your insurance company and a police report.  The IMEI number will help your carrier blacklist the phone so it cannot be used on thier network.  But you needed to enable Find My iPhone on it before it was lost in order to track it.
