My AppleTV shows up as a speaker in itunes but nothing else

I've been wrestling with this all night instead of sitting back and enjoying some movies on my memorial day weekend....
My Problem:
When I open itunes, the appletv does not appear connected. It doesn't show up in the left pane of itunes. BUT it shows up as a potential speaker on the bottom right drop down. I can play songs in iTunes and the audio comes out of my tv, but that's about it.
My setup:
AppleTV 2.0.2 hardwired to my router
500 TC wireless in another room
MacBook Pro
Everything has a valid IP address and is connected the internet. The appleTV connects to the internet (trailers/movie rentals etc) -- (This was 2 hours in itself, AppleTv's DHCP would not request a new IP. 4 or 5 hard reboots and it finally worked.)
Anyway, does anyone have any advice on how to get iTunes to fullt recognize the appleTv and not just have it be a speaker?

That's why I didn't say it was a bug experienced by everyone ... that tends to be the nature of bugs.
However, the original poster's description of his symptoms does match with those of us experiencing the bug, suggesting he might be experiencing it as well.
TipsyMonkey, have a read through the following thread and see if the problems described there match your own. Several users have reported several different band-aids and fixes (though, not all band-aids and fixes work for everyone).

Additionally, try restarting Bonjour:
*Restart Bonjour service*
Stop Bonjour service:
sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist
Start Bonjour service:
sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist

If you're not a developer then you really should not have upgraded.
I'm unsure how you can fix this as you have already done a back-up on iOS 7 and apple don't support firmware downgrades.

After turning on iMAC the sign in page comes up and accept my password. It then goes to a page with a background pictures but nothing else. If I leave it there it eventually fades and shows the clock. How to I get it to open from there?

See if it'll Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup).

Under TV Shows there used to be favorates, search and so one, for reason, just "My TV Shows" shows up but nothing else.

Yes there are quite a few similar reports at the moment, I haven't experienced the problem, yet others in the UK have, so we're not quite sure what criteria determines whether you are affected by this. I haven't seen any solutions so far, so it may just be a case of waiting to see if it's repaired or whether the rest of us are going to see the same thing.

Well, I have an iPod Classic, it gave me the error -1436 error and would not restore on iTunes.
I did the following:
My Boss (@work) has a fairly old iBook but it has OS-X, so I decided to give it a try and connected my iPod to it.
The system showed a window telling me that the disk is not MAC formated and needs to be validated prior further action. Snce it is a Mac product, I thought "yeah, go ahead".
It then opens the disk manager utility for the Mac and showed the disk. It's window has some tabs, one is to verify the disk, so I verified it. Guess what, it had some invalid clusters.
Then I formatted the iPod to OS-X Plus file system (next tab to the right). After formating the iPod, I "ejected" the iPod and reconnected to my PC. The Windows iTunes found an iPod with Mac file system and asked me to restore it. As I clicked on the "restore" button, I crossed my fingers as this was the last resource I have.
Finally, after the file extraction was done, it began to restore the iPod!!
I'm so happy about being able to restore the iPod that I decided to share with all you guys this solution as it is the most usefull, in my opinion.
Hope you can find someone with an iBook or a desktop Mac, so you can fix yours.

Keep the Powerbutton and the Homebutton pressed at the same time until you see the Apple logo on your iPad screen.

Thanks for this. I also found out that all I needed to do was right click on the device and select download purchases! I new I was being dense......thanks again.

- Delete all AB and resync
To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Manage Storage>Audio Book (if present) and delete
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup. See:

- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Sounds like the hold switch is broken, meaning you'll need to have your iPod serviced/replaced either by Apple or a third party repair company.

yes, you can locate and copy a file from your HD to a USB key using UNIX commands. If you know the exact name of the file which you’re trying to locate, try this:
find / -iname filename -print
This command will search your entire internal disk for the particular filename. If you know that it’s within a particular user account, then you can save search time with this variation:
find /Users/username -iname filename -print
Either variation of this command will print all files found which have the given filename. Presuming that you’re able to identify the correct file, you can copy it to a USB key using the command
cp -p filename_returned_by_find /Volumes/USB_volume
If you’re not sure which volume name your USB key has, this command will show you what the possibilities are:
ls /Volumes
Please let me know if you have any trouble with these commands.

so i restored my phone because it had quit playing any sound out of the speaker. now after trying to re-add my music now of it will go on. i have tried syncing it and manually adding it, neither one works. nothing shows up on my phone under music, but in itunes when i drag music on it goes to puts them in the transfer stage (grey with the circle arrows) and they just stay like that never going on my phone

Are you seeing your music listed in the iPod screen, or in Win explorer as in your earlier post?
I can see all the songs in my Edrive>al's Ipod> Ipod Control> Music folder.
A corrupted iPod database, will report zero music used, and have your music size reported as others, so you wont see the music in the iPod screen. Sorry, I thought there was some hope for you with iPodAccess, in recovery of the corrupted iPod database with your ratings.
You can try to borrow and use the Mac Disk Utility ->First Aid ->Repair.
Of course, if your iPod Hardisk is in a bad state, from the Disk Diagnostic report, then all my suggestion are futile.

2010 a1286 will not turn on. Magsafe will show charge but nothing else happens

I have a Macbook Pro 15” from September/October 2010.
On Saturday when I opened it up (it had just been on sleep for the last week) it showed a dulled screen and the big wheel as it normally would to load everything up again.
Then the screen went black and there was no sign of anything. I tried switching it on again but nothing.
Left it charging over night and still nothing.
When I press the battery indicator light on the side there is one flashing green and then nothing else.
I have an appointment with Milton Keynes Apple store on Saturday morning for it to be diagnosed.
I am hoping it is just the battery needing replacing (but when I have it plugged in the green light shows on the magsafe connector).

A lot of MacBook Pro's from mid-2010 have an issue with the graphics card: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4088
So there's a real chance that repair won't be as easy as replacing the battery...
