The seller should have given you the original disk so that you can reinstall as needed. But it likely was a single-user license (which really means single computer) so you can only have a copy on one computer at a time. If the seller didn't give you the disk he is probably still using the software on his new Mac. Your best option to get any of the iWork apps to use in OS X 10.6.6 or later is through the Mac App Store. You can then install them on any Mac you have that has access to the Mac App Store using your Apple ID.

  • Mail application will not open

My mail application quit opening a few weeks ago. When I try to open it with the icon on the dock and in the finder the screen just blinks. Even my computer savvy wife cant figure it out. My next stop is the genius bar unless there are some geniuses here. I can still get mail via .mac log in but cannot send links or documents as the OS mail application will not open when I need to send them.
    Any suggestions????

I would take your OS X installation disc and insert it in the drive, then restart the Mac and hold down the C key until you see the spinning cursor on screen. When it finishes loading, select Disk Utility from the Installer menu and first Repair Disk, then Repair Permissions, then reboot from your HD, eject the OS X disc and try Mail again.
If that doesn't work, then the best thing in terms of time and effort would be to do an Archive and Install of OS X 10.5, with the Preserve Users and Network Settings option. This will install a new copy of 10.5, while preserving all of your current folders and applications, and moving all the old ones to a folder named Previous System. You can then use Software Update to bring it current to 10.5.3, run Repair Permissions when that's done, then Mail should work normally again. Once you've confirmed that and that all your other programs and files are intact and working, you can delete the Previous System folder.

  • HT3805 My Aperture 3 just crashed, i.e., it would not open and showed an error message -1712.  I sent the current version to trash and reinstalled from my A3 disk, but after installing again it still says "Aperture can not open -1712."

My Aperture 3 just crashed...by that I mean it would not open and showed the message: "Aperture 3 cannot open.  -1712."  I have the latest A3 version and had been using it continually for 3 years.  This was the first crash.  And it will not open as often as I tried.
I am using a 13" Macbook Pro with OSX 10.8.5.
I tried sending the A3 application to trash, and reinstalling from my A3 disk.  Install message said "installation successful."  But A3 would still not open and gave same message with -1712.
Any suggestions what I should do or try?
    Thanks

Perhaps your Aperture library was damaged, when Aperture crashed. What where you doing, right before the crash happened?
    - If you installed new software - programs, plug-ins, preferences panels, check, if they are compatible.
    - If you imported new images, you may have imported corrupted files, that crash Aperture.
Can Aperture launch correctly, when you try to open a new Aperture library?
Hold down the options-key, when you launch Aperture and select to create a new library. Import a few images. Does that work?
If Aperture will launch on a new Library, try to repair your current library. Hold down the key-combination option-command ⌥⌘  firmly while double-clicking the Aperture library to open in First Aid Mode. Hold the keys down, until the panel appears, and then try  the First Aid Options in turn.
I have the latest A3 version
Is it Aperture 3.4.5? The latest Aperture 3.5.1 will not work with Mt. Lion.

  • Itunes would not open "MSVCR.dll" is missing. I uninstalled and tried to reinstall itunes and got "apple mobilE devicE failed to start" message

itunes woUld not open. I got the message "MSVCR.dll is missing". I uninstalled and tried to reinstall, but got the message "apple mobile devicE failed to start". any help is appreciated.

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall press on)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

  • Browser would not open!

On my Firefox browser would not open sometimes, whatever I try to do!
If you have faced the same issue, could you pls suggest some solutions?

When Firefox does not start is because of profile corruption.
I use to create under my Documents folder a folder named Mozilla and then another two folders for Firefox and Thunderbird.
To instruct Firefox to use for its profile the new path open Terminal and copy and paste the following line
    open -a /Applications/Firefox.app/ --args -p
    hit return.
If your actual profile doesn't contain any useful data remove it then follow the on screen advice to complete the configuration.

  • /Applications Folder not opening in Finder but works in Terminal

    Hi guys,
I recently upgraded to Yosemite, but I'm not sure if this is a Yosemite-related bug.
My application folder (/Applications) does not open in finder (see screenshots)
The spinner keep spinning in the bottom right corner.
Also, when I "Get Info", it keeps calculating the size and never completes.
Also, when I drag the Applications folder to the dock, nothing happens.
However, it works fine in Terminal:
    $ cd /; ls -lh
    drwxrwxr-x+ 129 root   admin   4.3K Oct 17 03:14 Applications
When I go inside the Applications folder (in terminal), I can list all the files in it.Oddly enough, most of them are greyed out, and it only says "total 8" when I have way more than 8 apps.
    $ cd /Applications; ls -lh
    total 8

I can even open my apps in Terminal:
    $ cd /Applications; open Notes.app
Mission Control works fine as well.
Does anyone know how I can see my Applications in Finder?
I've tried the usual Disk Utility (verify/repair permissions) and even reinstalled a fresh copy of Mac OSX Yosemite (using recovery).
Note: I did mess around with ~/Library/Preferences immediately after installing Yosemite because of the background flashing bug (I deleted some plists files to fix that bug).
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

    RonHerrema wrote:
Drew, I have previously done everything you have listed as possible remedies, with no success.
Well in that case the options I see are…
    1.
This seems like a 'defaults write tweak' or similar system level modification that is failing on the latest OS.
Revert any applied system tweaks from apps like Secrets or Onyx, that is if you remember applying any (these can be things like 'no-glass dock', no shadows on screenshots etc).
Your Terminal may have the command history saved. Try 'history' in that app to see if you have any 'defaults write' changes listed. Post them here for help to revert them.
It seems likely to me that the 'background flashing bug' mentioned earlier by helloziy was fixing a bad defaults write setting (preferences store the defaults write tweaks). If you have one 'bad tweak', there are probably others elsewhere on the system.
    2.
I would consider backing up, erasing the internal disk & clean installing the OS. Migrate ONLY your user data back to the new install (avoid Applications & 'other files' - they could be the reason for this issue). You will need to reinstall apps as you need them.
    3.
Another possibility is using EtreCheck to view what everyone has installed & running…
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
It would basically be a case of comparing affected reports & then removing or reinstalling apps until something changes (a crapshoot).
Etrecheck will not tell you about any 'defaults write' or other system modifications.
    4.
I'd backup & consider removing all system preferences. This is drastic & may break many things until you alter the default settings!
Reboot into recovery mode & remove the contents of /Library/Preferences from the boot disk, it will need to be done in Terminal.
You need to do this when the OS isn't running because Mac OS will cache preferences and some values will be written back to new files even after deleting the original files. Keep a backup of the files handy incase the OS breaks on next reboot!
Sorry it's not a solution, but it may help some diagnosis that get you closer to one.

  • Applications Will Not Open

Many of my applications will not open. After clicking on them, they sometimes bounce before notifying me that the application quit unexpectedly. I can't get iTunes to open at all before it crashes.

I'm having a very similar problem. A night or two ago I did a system update and since then I can't get Safari, iTunes or my Word to open. I don't know if there are any other applications affected, I don't really care, these are the ones I use practically everyday.
I did try to look at my activity monitor too since the spinning beachball and Safari closing on me was a common thing, and I did look at the inactive processes, and I did try to quit some of the processes that were under my name, since I could not log into the root user. So I probably messed something up there, but anyway...
I tried to restart, unplug the AC/remove the battery and hold power for 5 seconds, do the entire create a new account thing, delete the com.apple.safari.plist and no success. I also tried to do the repair permissions thing and it says "Repairing permissions for "Macintosh HD" Error: No valid packages Permissions repair complete.
Another weird thing is that the clock and airport icons are gone again from my bar. I had to put them back yesterday.
I know I will probably have to reinstall everything, I tried to do that, but I lost my discs in my move, so I know I will probably have to drive 3 hours to take it to a genius to fix, but I was hoping someone would have some clue or insite as to what I can do to try and fix this situation. I love my mac and my boyfriend is getting one this weekend (converted him from PC), so I don't want him to think they are bad at all!! Thanks.

I have just updated to the new version of Firefox. Eventhough, i have reboated my computor, Firfox prompts to do it again and again and would not open. The same things happen if i try to unistall it or redownload it. What can I do? edit

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop
    *Firefox 7.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
*Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
*Install the new version that you have downloaded
Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data if you uninstall and (re)install Firefox.

  • Itunes application could not open. Required iTunes component not installed

After 3 weeks of frustration, I would greatly appreciate any help anyone may be able to offer.
I have been attempting to sync my new iphone to itunes. Initially, I received the message *"This iphone cannot be used because the required software is not installed"* when itunes started.
I spent a week trying to fix this error, following suggestions to completely remove all apple software and reinstall, login as a different user, and disable startup programs including antivirus/firewalls (see *http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6326342*). After a week of frustration, I decided to wait for itunes 8, hoping it may resolve my issue.
I installed itunes 8, and now itunes will not boot, with the message *"The itunes application could not open. A required itunes component is not installed"*. I followed the instructions in this post: *http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8056494&#8056494*, without success.
I rang the Apple tech support line, and the tech support person was not able to fix my issue. I was told that they did not know what was wrong, and that I should reinstall Vista, or contact Microsoft. I am very reluctant to do so, as I do not wish to risk losing my otherwise stable system, not to mention hours and hours of installation time.
I have never had the experience of having such a high value product (iphone) not working, and being told it was essentialy 'my problem'. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions. I have not been able to sync my iphone with my PC for 3 weeks now, and I am becoming very frustrated. I feel quite abandoned by Apple. I love my iphone, but there is no question that this experience will make me think twice about an Apple product in future.
    Thanks in advance,
    Bartek.

Solution: It appears that Quicktime and iTunes versions got out of sync.
    1) Uninstall Quicktime.
    2) Download and install an older version of Quicktime (7.5.5 to be exact)
FIXED! Hope this helps the next person

    I installed 2.3 upgrade,
installer folder is in  harddrive but application will not open or replace 2.0 as it says it "should". When I attempt to it just reinstalls the installer, never the functioning application.  I have tried too many times now. Always same response. WOuld love to upgrade ( and purge all the alias 2.3 off hardrive!

when I went to the library folder there was no receipts only
    com.adobe.Reader whihc included install.log
so I guess that means something is missing?
If above still doesn't resolve problem - go to the folder named
"Receipts" in the Mac OS X Library folder (i.e. the main Library
not you Users Library) and delete the file named Adobe Photoshop
    Lightroom 2.pkg

I’ve tried to update my i-Tunes version after the site suggested I should following my i-Pad Air being plugged into it for the first time. The update seemed successful but the program would not open at all despite switching off the PC and re-starting several times. I then tried wiping the original software from the computer and re-downloading from scratch. Each time I tried the download failed with a message saying “Service “Apple Mobile Device” failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services” At this stage, the only way forward was to “abort” the download. This I have done now four times and the same thing happens. When I did finally manage to get an i-Tunes shortcut on my desktop, the program wouldn’t open saying: “i-Tunes was not installed correctly. Please re-install i-Tunes. Error 7 (Windows error 193)” Any ideas to resolve this?

Unless you've recently attempted to downgrade iTunes this is probably a sign of a corrupt library file. See Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash.
