My Applications folder shows empty. How do I restore it ?

My Applications folder was missing from my dock, so I opened it in finder and tried to drag it to my dock. It would only let me drop it on my desk top. I thought I could drag it from there to my dock, but then It looked like I was making copies of1000's of files so I x'ed out of it and now when I try to open the applications folder in fider it shows it to bwe empty.  How do I restore the contents to it?...

You started to copy, not move, the Applications folder. Delete the copy. Drag the original to the right side of the Dock, next to the Trash icon (not into the Trash.)

  • Applications folder is empty--how to restore?

For some reason, my Applications folder in the finder is empty. All the applications exist, but i have to use Find or Spotlight to get to them (except those in the dock).
Any idea how to restore this?
    Cheers

    A couple of things:
    1. The only thing Terminal shows as hidden is the custom icon for the /Applications folder itself, which is perfectly normal and shouldn't be changed. There is no reason to run the sudo command.
    2. OS X has not used nor automatically created a .hidden file in...umm...forever. Not since Panther, although the Finder in both Tiger and Leopard will actually read a .hidden file if one exists. But unless one has been just running update since Panther, or you have created a .hidden file yourself, there won't be one.
I suspect the poster is simply opening the wrong Applications folder, that there is an Applications folder in the home folder, and that is one being opened. To check:
    1. Type the name of a program in Spotlight in the menu bar
    2. The "Top Hit" will be the program
    3. Press and hold the Command key and click on program in the Spotlight list
A Finder window will open with that program high-lighted. You should see all the other programs as well, and you should be in the proper Applications folder. Change the View of the folder to Column view. In the Sidebar your startup drive should be select, in the next column the Applications folder will be selected, and in the next column all the applications will be listed, with the one you entered in Spotlight selected.

  • System tools folder is empty - How can I restore the items?

    Hi
MY System tools folder is empty.
Is there any way of restoring the items such as System restore, backup, scheduled tasks etc.
All these are accessible by other routes
    Regards Fred

I have zipped up the folder on my computer and I have uploaded it to a filehost for you.
All you need to to is:
    1. Visit http://www.filehost.gr/593219 , scroll to the bottom, wait 1 minute for your session to activate and download.
    2. Unzip the files in the folder.
    3. Cut the files and right click Start Menu and select Explorer All Users, find the System Tools folder and insert the items there.
If you notice the programs don't work, then there are some corruptions in your XP and you can either try and fix manually or I recommend doing a format with the restore disk as a safe bet to fix all problems on the computer - back up all your files to an external HDD or CD/DVD if you do though.
    Good luck.

  • Root Applications folder is empty? ls -laO shows nothing

For some raisin, for the past couple days I've noticed my root applications folder is empty. The applications on the dock still launch fine, "Show in finder" shows an empty applications folder. ls -laO shows nothing. I notice that, if I look at it funny, sometimes the "utilities" folder pops up, but typically only for a few seconds. Same with with the MS Office folder. Searching for application names in spotlight shows them, but "open in enclosing folder" shows an empty Applications folder. Searching for Terminal shows Terminal, along with a full Utilities folder, but the applications folder is still empty when I go up the tree. I have no clue what's going on here. Can anyone give me an assist before I flatten and reinstall?

in the root Applications folder, all my apps are there, but the Applications folder within my User folder is empty. The "root Applications folder" contains applications available for all user accounts to use. If you have an Applications folder in your User folder (I, for one, don't) it is for your own private applications. If you don't have any, you can delete that folder if you wish (but check there are no other files, eg support files or application "helper" folders, in there first).

  • Folder shows empty but is not empty

I installed about hundred applications. I put it in folder Games. In one moment this folder showed empty. So the applications are there within but is too much and the folder can't show it.
If I open games it shows empty and when I return EVERY FOLDER get empty. Like the memory sucks.
I can't uninstall it because Applications Manager IS A F**** GARBAGE. It stop to work after 50 application and give "Memory full".
With "Batch uninstaller" I uninstalled some of it but folder games is still show empty. The only change was after I opened games the other folder stop to show empty.
I found /t5/Pool-of-Knowledge/How-to-Remove-quot-stuck-quot-Apps/td-p/692348  and did this step to remove maually Java applications from Games folder BUT when I install it again it says that I still have it and ask me to overwrite it. And after reinstallation I cant find it. I suppose it goes AGAIN in folder games.
How to make folder games to show his content? I don't have option "delete". Or how to reinstall the applications again but after reinstall to be in other folder like "Applications" for example, not to go in Games automatically?
If you fix it with hard reset because as you know this is vivid defect => I did not break any condition in my warranty as I used properly this product => According EU consumer's law if same defect appears more than 2 times the producer is obliged to replace the product OR to return the money.
So, I DON'T advice you to give me a solution as "hard reset" unless if you are not sure that this defect will not appear SECOND time after the reset which I deliberately will install hundred of your OVI applications and will put it into ONE GAMES FOLDER just because I CAN without to break any item in the user manual compliant with EU consumer laws.
Please fell free to solve the defect of my product in warranty under EU law terms which is 1 month. All further issues could be arranged by authority of EU consumers protection laws if my party conceive for necessary

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.
You will need a minimum of 10-12 GBs of free space to install Yosemite, however, that is a bare minimum and should be at least twice that amount.

  • I installed Sophos 9.2.2 on 10.6.8 and now my Applications folder appears empty.

I installed Sophos 9.2.2 on my iMac with 10.6.8. It found "spyware" in the form of a pixel ruler app I downloaded last year (it apparently had the "cowhand-c" trojan or something like that). I let Sophos remove it and after that, my Applications folder was empty. The list of applications still appear in the Applications folder in Finder Window SIDEBAR but not in the Applications folder itself. The status bar says "0 items." After using the "showAllFiles" command, I now see only ".localized" The following actions have had no effect: removal of Sophos, reboots, and a permissions repair.
As far as I can tell now, there is no impairment to the function of my iMac, but it's weird. Can this be fixed?

Disregard. Date display in Mail is also screwed up. It's time to use that Lion license I've had for just in case.
My Sophos Antivirus experience: very bad. A lesson has been learned: don't install what doesn't come from the App Store. This is why people say that some security software is as bad as the stuff you're trying to defend against.

  • Home Folder Applications folder is empty

Using Finder, if I select Macintosh HD, I get the applications folder, and it lists the apps, as it should. In the Sidebar is my Home Folder, identified by my short name...when I select it, I get various folders to view....the Applications Folder is empty...nothing....but if I select Macintosh HD in the Sidebar as I mentioned above, all the apps are their...
What does this mean? Why is the Applications folder under my shortname empty?
    Thanks.

"Why is the Applications folder under my shortname empty?"
Because that is where apps that you, and only you have access to. No other users will see them or be able to use them. If the folder's empty, don't worry about it.

  • Applications folder on Dock, how to get it to show all apps?

Somewhat daft question. I just upgraded last night to a MacBook Pro. On my old PowerBook, I was able to click on the Applications Folder on the bottom right and all apps would show. Now, only about 10 show. How can I get all of them to show? I've been trying to figure it out all night.

    Happens to us all...

  • Applications folder is invisible - how do I make it visible?

Applications folder no longer shows in MacIntosh HD finder but is still available in finder sidebar. How do I restore the Applications folder to the MacIntosh finder window?

I tried to follow this part of the instructions:
Apple has recognized the problem of the home folder becoming invisible and has a new Knowledge Base Article giving a brand new Terminal command to fix it. This brings us to the good news: in Leopard the change flags (chflags) command has been modified so that it now will set a Finder "hidden" flag (and unset it too, of course), as it will change the visible bit. The command can be used on drives and folders, and is available whether you have installed Developer Tools or not. Thus to change the hidden flag, or set the invisible bit back to visible on your home folder, you would issue this command:
    chflags nohidden /Users/yourshortname
Specifically I copied the command, opened Terminal, clicked on new command, pasted the command, substituted my shortname, and clicked run. Unfortunately the folder, "Applications" is still hidden. Am I doing what I should?

  • My applications folder is empty when I open it in finder.

Aside from those in my dock, other applications installed in my computer can only be seen and opened using launch pad. Prior to this happening, I have just recently updated my OSX Mavericks and accidentally removed my applications folder in dock. Although I can still start apllications using launch pad, I'd like to know if and how can I make applications reappear in my applications folder. Can anyone help me, please?

In Finder (menu bar), try going to Go -> Applications.
Mavericks seems to have installed a secondary empty Application folder in my User directory. Maybe it's done the same thing with yours.

  • Applications folder is empty within User folder

    Hi,
this is probably a simple one, but I just noticed that in the root Applications folder, all my apps are there, but the Applications folder within my User folder is empty. It doesn't seem to affect my using any apps, just thought they'd also show up in my User folder.
    thanks.

  • Applications folder is empty

How do I fix this? I'm on Mountain Lion 10.8.2 (12C60) 2012 air, and although my main applications folder has my apps in it (Macintosh HD > Applications) and my launchpad looks fine, for some reason my user applications folder is completely empty (Macintosh HD > Users > MyName > Applications). I am the only user on this computer (other than guest account). I don't remember it being like this in previous versions of OS X. Is it meant to be empty unless I have apps installed only for myself?

  • Media folder is empty, how can I get the clips back?

The first time, this problem appeared was when I imported data in a new project. For two times the import stopped and I didn't find any clips in the media folder.
Then I succeded with importing and worked on the project several hours.
But now theres no data from this project on the computer anymore, after I had worked on it today. I didn't save any changes, just pressed "apple Z" and the i Movie window was empty, clips disappeared and stuff. The media folder is empty again and when I start iMovie it sais, that it can't find the clips.
The clips are not in the waste basket and i searched for it everywhere but i can't find them.
Do you know what could have happened and how I can get my data back?
I have an older version, iMovie 3.0.3 on Mac Pro.
Thanks for help!! (and hope you understand my school englisch)

Normally Apple-Z will undo just the last thing I've done but yesterday it deleted everything and I don't know how to get it back.
True, that is what should have happened, but in your case for some reason it cleared the lot. If there is nothing in the media folder, and nothing in the trash, then it sounds as though you have truly lost everything. The big question is really why the problem occurred in the first place.
As Lennart says, you should not still be using imovie 3.
Sorry can't be of more help.

  • Mail Archive folder showing empty

I posted this question yesterday but didn't specify that the Archive folder I was referring to was in Mail.  I can't understand why the folder is showing as empty on both my iMac and MacBook Pro (Mavericks) whilst the same folder shows all its content on both my iPad and iPhone (IOS7).  I have tried Rebuild, but that doesn't work. Has anybody out there got any suggestions?  I would be so grateful.

Oh and any idea why some of my TRASH folders are shown as a trash can and the others as a circle?

  • Applications folder showing apps in one but not the other

Hey everyone! I just bought a new Macbook Pro and migrated my files over. My applications folder in the HD has all my apps, but for some reason they are not showing in my User applications folder.
Originally I installed them for all users, the only user was me. What is the problem here and can I fix it?

Hi your applications are stored in the first Applications folder (Macintosh HD/Applications) so that they can be used by ALL users of your Mac. If you have any applications that you wish to restrict to only one user then you'd have to install in that user's Applications folder.
OS X is a multi-user OS which is why it is designed in this way. If your Apps were stored in Macintosh Hard Disk/Users/YourUserName/Applications only you would be able to use them. If you then added a second user (or a test user) you'd have to install the applications again for the new user to be able to use them.
