My Applications won't stay in the Dock

Since I downloaded lion, I couldn't keep any applications on my dock. Except the ones that were already on there.. I tried to keep my firefox on it and wouldn't work either, I right clicked it and clicked options it didn't say anything, it only said "open at login and show in finder" I tried dragging the applications but it still won't work. Please help me, it's really annoying just searching the applications in spotlight!

Maybe a permission problem? Use Disk Utility to repair permissions, see if that helps.

I have created a second user on my iMac (OSX 10.7.1) and applications won't stay in the dock and my preferences default after restart. Everything works fine with the main user. Anyone else have this problem?

Hi again, ;o)
I found this advice in another thread (here), which you might find helpful...
Unregistering the iMac from .Mac syncing and re-registering it (replacing the computer's information with the .Mac information) resolved the issue.
The .Mac sync information was Reset (i.e. recopied in it's entirety) from the MacBook (the 'good' computer) to .Mac prior to unregistering and re-registering the iMac, so a fresh copy of the sync could be loaded from .Mac to the iMac.
I hope this helps the others who have had this problem.

• I cant get application fold to stay on the dock

hui i cant get the applications folder to stay on the doc. I know how to drag and drop but all it does is copy to desk top and not on to the dock... can you help thanks

Place folders near the Trash can area and it will create a new "alias"
Just make sure it doesn't go into the Trash Can.
I lost my Safari /other on the Dock! "poof" "?"

• IChat won't stay on the dock

Every time I put iChat on my dock, it disappears within a minute!
What's wrong?
Thanks,
Ken

Nope, that's not it.
I put the icon in the dock. A few seconds later it disappears. Poof. Now you have it now you don't.
There is nothing different from this icon and the others.
On my other 2 Macs, the icon stays in the dock. So, something must be corrupt somewhere, though I've just re-installed Leopard and the problem didn't go away.

• The publishing settings page does not open when I click on the domain name and the iWeb application will not stay on the dock.

Hello,
I have been trying to help a friend who is having problems publishing her website. (She has done so previously using Mobile me)
There seem to be a couple of things wrong with the application,
1 if I drag the application icon onto the dock, it won't stay there
2 I wanted to change where her site is published to (she has bought a domain name and has a hosting service now) but when I click on the domain name I do not get the "site publishing settings page" so we can't enter the new details. All that comes up is the main page of her website.
I would suggest uninstalling and re-installing Iweb, to see if that clears the problem, but as Iweb came pre-installed with her Imac, I am not sure that we can do this.
Any ideas please?
she's using and imac 24 in (approx 4 years old) and running osx 10.5.8

NO - not correct. Even if you are still using iWeb 08, you can still publish to another host and not MobileMe. You do this by selecting the option 'Publish to a local folder" and this will publish the site to your desktop and you can then use an ftp programme such as Cyberduck to upload your site to your host.
MobileMe will not be here after the end of June, so you will have to find alternative hosting. They are not taking any new subscriptions.
On new Macs, iLife 11 is pre-installed, but only iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand are included, not iWeb and iDVD. The Apple Online store is not selling the boxed version of iLife 11 any longer, so if you want to upgrade to iLife, then you'll have to look online at Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk for a boxed set of either iLife 09 or iLife 11. Both contains iWeb 09, which is what you would want.

• Safari won't stay in my dock

Hi,
Since I have upgraded my Leopard to Snow Leopard my Safari won't stay in the dock. I have to place a new alias in the dock after every restart of my computer.
Anyone any ideas why and how to prevent it?
Thank you,

Hello Pegg:
Try trashing a preference file and restarting (com.apple.dock.plist). Then drag the icon from your application folder to the dock. One other observation. If you have the application moved out of the Application folder, put it back.

• Safari & mail Icons will not stay in the Dock?

Two days ago I noticed that both Safari & Mail icons were not in the dock. I opened applications and returned them, they just vanish, when I open them from apps they both work OK.
I have worked round the problem by using an alias and placing that in the dock. Any way I can get back to were I was?

When you launch the applications and Control-click on their icons in the Dock, do you see "Keep in Dock" or "Remove from Dock" in the contextual menu? If the menu says "Keep in Dock," click on that setting.
Forgive me if you knew this, because I can't tell from your description if this is relevant or not: Normally, application icons will appear in the Dock when the application is running and disappear from the Dock when you quit the application, unless you have set the application icon to stay in the Dock via the above method or by dragging the application file to the Dock. (Dragging the icon out of the Dock will have the reverse effect, the same as choosing "Remove from Dock," and I'm thinking that might be what happened that caused your icons to disappear from the Dock after quitting.) Creating an alias of the application and placing that in the Dock is a workaround, but shouldn't be necessary.
If the above doesn't work, something odd is going on with your Dock indeed. Post back and people will help troubleshoot further.

• Mail Icon won't stay in the position in the dock where I put it

I have a very strange happening on my iMac (OSX 10.5.5). The mail icon in my dock won't stay in the position where I put it. After a few seconds, it moves to the last position in the dock (before the dashed line). If my dock is at the bottom of screen, the mail icon moves to right just before the dashed line. If my dock is on the right side of screen, the mail icon moves to the bottom just before the dashed line. Each time I move the mail icon to another position in the dock, it moves back to the last position. Can anyone help me figure this out - so that I can put the mail icon where I want it to appear? Thank you. Dale

first a question for you. are you using Mobileme? I've seen a number of posts with the same problem by people using Mobileme (which i don't have). haven't seen a resolution to this but you might want to check in the mobileme forum. If you are not using mobileme try resetting Dock preferences. delete the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and restart Dock by running the following terminal command
killall Dock
This will reset your Dock to the default and hopefully fix the issue.

• Safari won't stay in my dock - problem with sync

Safari won't stay in my dock and it is related to mobileme sync but I'm not sure how to fix it.
I reset the mobileme dock sync data but that doesn't help.
I turned mobileme syncing off completely then I moved the Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist file to the desktop, killall Dock in terminal..... I'm in the middle of adding stuff and moving things into my new dock and I see Safari jump to the bottom of the dock because I had it open. Hmm. It keeps removing itself from the dock, only takes a few moments and mobileme sync is OFF.
I opened console and added safari to the dock. I wait a couple seconds and Safari jumps back down the dock and this pops into console:
Aug 4 22:03:05 MacBookPro [0x0-0x1c01c].com.apple.dock[183]: 2008-08-04 22:03:05.516 DockSyncClient[234:10b] Dock Sync Client caught exception: NSInvalidArgumentException: [ISyncConcreteSession clientAcceptedChangesForRecordWithIdentifier:formattedRecord:newRecordIdentifie r:]: you can't change the record identifier from B88A8C54-5B9B-46E1-9F97-E2222E92DC1C to /Applications/Safari.app: it is already associated with a different record.
Sync is off but it is still trying to sync? Is there a local sync record that I need to delete?

follow-up to my own post...
I found a "tip" on another website that suggests deleting several files to fix the problem. They also acknowledge that the files are in a folder which Apple specifically says shouldn't be messed with. That scared me off.
However, I tried something else, which has seemed to work (so far):
1. Open MobileMe pane in Sys Prefs
2. Turn off Dock Items Syncing
3. Turn On Dock Items Syncing
4. Click Advanced Button
5. Select local computer (which is where the problem is happening)
6. Select "Reset Sync Data"
7. Select Replace: "Dock Items"
8. with "on this computer with sync info from MobileMe"
I have tried things like this before without success. Maybe I did something different this time. Either way, it worked. The items are stying in my dock, and have even survived an automatic and manual sync.
Hope this helps.

• How do I get my mail icon to stay in the dock

My mail icon disappeared from my dock and I cannot make it stay in the dock when I drag it there or right click on it and command it to stay on the dock. It keeps disappearing.

Go to Applications
Drag the Mail icon into the dock
It should stay there!

Final Cut will not shut down ..... stays in the dock and I have to physically reboot

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you mean by stuck in Dock.
You reboot your Mac. Is FCP trying to open automatically (the icon bouncing)? Or is it just visible in the Dock?

No visit to San Francisco is complete without a ride on the iconic cable cars that climb up the vertiginous hills of the city. Of the twenty-three lines established between 1873 and 1890, three remain: two routes from downtown near Union Square to Fisherman's Wharf, and a third route along California Street.

The cable cars rely on cables running constantly beneath the road’s surface. The driver—or gripman—uses a lever to grip the cable to pull the car and its passengers up the hill. The gripman requires not only great strength, but also great skill. He needs to know where to release the cable to coast over crossing cables and points. The conductor works in close cooperation with the gripman, operating the brake at the rear of the car to prevent it from running out of control on the downward slopes.

If you plan to travel around the city, it’s often cheaper to buy a Muni Passport, which gives you unlimited rides on San Francisco’s extensive public transport system, including the cable cars (but not the BART subway system). Even a single-day passport ($14) will save you money if you make a return trip, and stop off to visit Chinatown one way.

There are often long lines at the cable car terminus, particularly on the Powell-Mason and Powell-Hyde routes. If you don’t want to wait, try walking a few stops along the route. The conductor usually leaves a small number of places to pick up passengers on the way. The California Street route is generally less crowded (but not as spectacular).

• My iPad2 won't stay in the horizontal view position

My iPad2 won't stay in the horizontal view position. I have it unlocked so I believe it should switch between views as I move it. Before I make a trip to the Apple store I want to make sure it's not user error!

Unlocked allows the screen to rotate as you rotate the device. Locked is supposed to keep the screen fixed in one orientation. However the function of the switch on the side can be swapped between orientation lock and mute, so it might not be perfoming the job you expect it to. Check Settings > General > Side Switch.
