My backlight keeps going dark....

My backlight keeps going off and my screen goes dark. You can still make out all of the features...but everything is really dark. It will just go on and go off. Sometimes when I close my computer and just open it up again, the backlight comes on again. Does anyone else have this problem? Does anyone know how to fix it?

Unchecking "Automatically reduce brightness..." in the Energy Saver Preferences fixed this problem for me.
Original Symptoms:
Turn on Macbook, screen becomes fully lit through the apple screen, then dims completely when the OS begins to load. The display can be seen slightly using ambient light, but the backlight is completely off.
Temporary Fix:
The temporary fix was to dim the screen using the function key, then brighten one or two levels. Brightening any more would cause the backlight to go off.
The Cure:
After unchecking the "Automatically reduce brightness..." boxes (in both Battery and Power Adapter mode), I was able the turn the brightness up completely without any other changes or need for a restart.

Why does my computer screen keep going dark?

Good. This means that, in your existing account, a setting is bad or .plist file is corrupt. As identifying the rascal may take time, my suggestion is to move data to the new account, must be with administrative privileges. As the contents of each account is unavailable to the other, there are two methods:
    - if you have a backup on an external disk, as you should (if not, consider this seriously, do not count on good behavior of hard disks), make a last backup on the existing account, and restore in the other account; when ready, delete the old (buggy) account
    - if not, save your settings unto a flash drive; this is a limited backup just to avoid putting back settings for Mail etc. I am satisfied with iBackup (grapefruit.ch), but there are other backup utilitites, Time Machine, for example; TM does not allow limited backup, it works if you have a large external disk. If backup disk is not available, move files to shared folder, which is visibile from both accounts, and from there to the new account.
May seem difficult, in fact it is not. You must just move data from one account to another. Now, take care to new apps you install or new functions you activate. When you notice something strange, that may be the cause of this behavior.

  • External monitor hooked to laptop keeps going "dark"

The screen on my laptop cracked and so I have hooked it up to an external monitor HP 2009m via VGA.  Laptop is HP Pavillion dv6 with Win7 home premium with all current updates.  After I have been working for about 30 minutes, the monitor keeps going off and I have to hit the power button which usually brings it back, but sometimes I also have to use the source button to cycle back to an active monitor.  The "power lockout" shows up occasionally and sometimes it just refuses to stay on for more than 30 seconds.  I have used the factory reset, have held the power button for 15-30 seconds and unplugged it but it still keeps happening.  I have disabled OSD and sleep and everything else I can think of.  Starting to suspect it is something coming from the laptop, have never seen anything like this and scoured forums for simliar problems/solutions (hence the holding power and factor reset items I have already tried).  I am starting to suspect it might be Netflix, although this seems odd, but it definitely happens more often if I am listening to Netflix in the background.
Anyway, I will reboot and it will be ok for awhile.  Actually, until I start watching netflix again.  Any other ideas?  Driving me insane.  Can I just get the monitor on my laptop fixed replaced?  Thanks in advance for any ideas.

you can check in power option and monitor options too
    >> start menu >> control panel >> Power options
you will see the list on the left column and you will find monitor options

  • IPhone 4S keeps going dark

Hi I upgraded the software to ios 6.12 . Since then the screen occasionally goes dark . Will only come back bright if I press home and on /off together . I have done a restore but still happens . Any suggestions before I ring apple !!!!!

This is hardware fault of LCD Display or Logic Board Display controllers. Restore iPhone with iTunes on computer. See if better. If still problem and you have Warranty or AppleCare, make Genius reservation and take to Apple for resolution. If no coverage, the next step would be replacement of entire front assembly. If still problem there is no resonable fix. If you want this handled by Apple, they do not replace iPhone 4S front screens, they replace the entire iPhone 4S exactly like yours for $199.

  • Why does my macbook pro LED backlight keep going from low to high on it's own?

So this has happened to me I think once or twice before.. I'll be using my macbook and all of a sudden it's LED backlight goes dim. Then I have to change it back so it's in the middle (not too dim, not too bright). Then a couple minutes/seconds later the LED backlight goes to it's brightest.. It's making me mad that it's doing this and I don't know why it's doing what it does. All of this is happening while I'm scrolling down a webpage, typing, or just physically doing something on the keyboards. So it's not because it's about to go to sleep. I always keep the LED backlighting in the middle so it doesn't waste too much battery. So why is it doing this? Help me please?

There is an ambient light sensor built in the the MBP.  If it is annoying , open SYSTEM PREFERENCES>DISPLAYS>DISPLAY.  Uncheck the box for 'Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes'.
    Ciao.

  • HP ZR2740w keeps going dark

I recently purchased an HP ZR2740w monitor from B&H.  I had hoped to use it as a second monitor on my mac mini, but it pretty much flat out won't work on the mini other than at something like 1280x724, much worse than my Dell 1920x1080.
It would work, quite well for a while, with my Linux box through the display port, showing full resolution.  I'm running Linux Mint 17 (Qiana) on and Asus Z87 plus mother board.  I have three display set up, a Samsung SyncMaster 213T running via an hdmi->dvi adapter at 1600x1200, the HP on the mini display and a ViewSonic on the VGA.
The problem is that after a while, the HP will go dark. like it is in some power saving mode. Even if I'm playing a video on it.  It still tells the computer that it is there though, as my windows stay on the dark display and don't move to other displays, like they do when I turn it off. Also my cursor has to traverse the space of the dark display in the middle.
Once it happens once, I can sometimes bring it back by hitting the power button, but the next shutdown is much quicker. Somtimes, hitting the powerbutton will only show an image for less than a second before darkenss, in which case I have to cycle the power with the hard power switch on the back.
It seems as if this monitor has some sort of "sleep mode" to save power, rather than letting the computer decide when to do so.  The other possiblity, since the up times get a lot shorter, is that it is overheating and automatically shutting down because of that, but I can't imagine an LCD overheating in regular usage.

My comment about it being heat related prompted me to try to turn down the brightness, it being the only control on the monitor.  Without any sort of objective brightness indicator on the display (Why did you remove the OSD menu anyways?) it wasn't immediately obvious that the button was having any effect.  I did, however turn it down until it was visibly dimmer and have been playing video continuously for about an hour and a half without the screen blanking on me.
So, if the display has an overtemp cutoff, I may have figured out the solution.  If the display is not supposed to have an overtemp cutoff, then this one seems to have a temperature dependent fault.

  • Ipod classic backlight keeps going back to 10 seconds

, i dont like it. I want to make it stay on 30 seconds. How do I force it to stay?

Are you saying the setting does not stay at the selected 30 seconds option, but instead defaults back to 10?  If that is the case, try a hard reset first.  To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.  Then, if necessary, set the backlight timer to 30 seconds again and see if it sticks this time.
Otherwise, it's likely a software issue, and you'll need to connect the iPod to your iTunes library and restore it to factory settings.

  • My iSight keeps going Dark

I have installed Windows XP on my MBP. Since then my iSight isn't working properly. it is constantly Dark. I did read on here that you need to download the updated windows XP drivers for the iSight to work in XP and should correct it for OSX but I cannot find the download any where on Apples Web site.
    Please Help
    Pete

    Check http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/
I didn't install my Boot Camp myself, but I know there were iSight drivers somewhere along the way. Look in the instructions and follow them exactly as instructed. Mine was installed just fine and my iSight works in Windoze...

  • Backlight keeps going off and I don't know why

Every time I tilt my screen back, it goes black but my computer is still on. I have to have it probably at around 45 degrees just to have my screen working which is a pain.
    It looks just like this:

Does anyone know why is it doing this and how I can fix it? Also, how much does it cost to get it fixed? Thank so much

Contact Apple or an authorized repair center for repair and it's cost. Nobody here would know.

  • My iMac screen keeps going dark but my computer stays on

... how do I correct solve this issue ??

With such a lack of information about all I can think of is setting sleep and display to "never" in System Preferences - Energy Saver.

  • HT3215 How do you keep the clock face showing all the time without the screen going dark?

How do you keep the clock face showing all the time without the screen going dark?

Thanks.  I saw a number of answers to the same basic question after I posted my question and apparently there are ways to to keep it on but, as you said, it will drain the battery quickly.

  • NB100 Screen goes dark - backlight not working

My new NB100 (had it about 3 weeks) just started going dark at random intervals. The screen's backlight goes off. In a light room I can still see the outline of the GUI very faintly. I have tried re-booting and it is still dark when I reboot. I have plugged an external monitor in and that works fine, so there's nothing wrong with the graphics card. This morning I turned it on and it worked for about 1 hour then just went blank on me while I was using it.

    Hi
If an external monitor works fine on your notebook its an internal display issue. The FL inverter controls the backlight of a display so I think this part must be replaced.
As Akuma said you should go to an authorized service provider. They can order all Toshiba parts and the technicians can exchange the FL inverter.
Here you can search for an ASP:

  • New cinema display on Mac Pro monitor keeps turning off/going dark. Support told me a keyboard shortcut (something like option R L)... I'd appreciate it if anyone knows it. I had this problem when i 1st bought it 2 months ago.

My new cinema display fro mac pro just went dark. When I 1st bought it, the display wouldn't turn on.I called support and they gave me a keyboard shortcut - something like Option+R+L - that you held down for 2 restart cycles. Then it magically turned on. I can't remember the sequence and I'm afraid to guess! I'd appreciate if anyone knows the trick. I'm also wondering if I should bring this display back...

Cassandra from Apple Support ROCKS!!!! She's a supervisor somewhere and should have a raise. Pleasant, smart and professional with a customer who wouldn't take "I don't know" for an answer.
If your cinema display goes dark:
    1. shut down computer
    2. restart
    3. immediately hold down Command-Option-P-R keys simultaneously for a few minutes (seems forever)
    4. keep holding keys for 2 startup cycles
    5. release and go back to work if you're lucky to have a restored screen
