My backup never succeeds- now I need to Restore.

I have been using PSE since version 3 and now use version 11. In all that time I have always had problems getting a backup to go all the way through to completion. I normally end up with the copied files as B???????.* and a catalog.buc file. No *.tly file.
Obvioiusly when I want to restore I cannot do it via the restore command because it needs the tally file.
As it happens, my current catalog includes multiple copies of some files on three hard disks so when one of my hard disks crashed all has not been lost.
I have tagges all the files that are on the crashed drive and then identified those with a duplicate elsewhere and those without. I now know that I need to recover about 1000 files and I think that most of them are on my backup set that has no tally file.
I know that I could go through the B??? files one by one and find the files but that will take a long time. Can anybody suggest a procedure to speed it up?

A more general question might be:
"What can you recover from an incomplete pse11 backup, where the backup.tly file is missing ?"
Note : I am convinced that the lack of the backup.tly file means at least a part of the media files have not been copied, and can't be recovered.
The good news is that the catalog.buc is a copy of the database, the catalog.pse11db file.
If you need to restore because the catalog has been messed up, you can always rename that catalog.buc and use it to replace the old catalog.
Now, one of your hard drive has failed. I suppose your backup is on an externel drive like J:
If your catalog is still valid (it was not on the failed drive), ok. Otherwise, rename and copy the catalog.buc to use it.
If you search for missing files, you'll find all the files which were on the failed drive.
Each missing file has a copy in the backup folder of your J: drive.
Is there a way to reconnect the missing file to the 'B0000...' file in the backup folder ?
Yes... but I don't see a way to do that automatically.
The reconnection feature lets you browse to your backup folder. It shows the icons of the corresponding files. The problem is that the automatic restoration process will recognize the file has been renamed and show a message requiring you to confirm the reconnection. You have to do that for each individual file. To reconnect 100 files is quite feasible, for 1000... you are right, that will take a long time.
If you succeed in this task, you may want to move the reconnected files from the backup folder to one of your internal drives.
For the reason you can't complete a full backup, the usual reason is the presence of unrecognized file types, mainly video.

Check out this recent thread and see whether that works for you: [https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1012315 when using restart firefox you get a folder on the desktop called old firefox data i need to know how to use this folder to get my old firefox preferences back].
When you are done using the "old" profile you can switch back to your current profile by going back through the Profile Manager.
You might be tempted to use the Delete Profile button to clear the temporary profile. But... it's a bit too easy to accidentally delete your "real" profile, so I recommend resisting the temptation.

hello today i crash firefox when try to open boockmark menu. so i reinstall firefox and clear it. now i need to restore tiles cuz i dont remember 1 website what i use before. how can i do it ? i have old profile files

The directory tiles that Firefox shows on the about:newtab page are saved in the directoryLinks.json file in the parent location of the disk cache.
See the about:cache page for the location of the disk cache and go one level up.

You can change the order of the boxes on the about:newtab page and drag an item to a different tile to pin it to that position or you can remove a website by clicking the close X to block that URL.
You can drag a bookmark or history item and drop them in a tile on the about:newtab page to pin them and have your own favorites sites showing.

  • Need to restore iPod, but iTunes won't let me...

Apparently, I disconnected my iPod the wrong way (I will admit to that) and now I need to restore it. That is fine and dandy, I don't mind. But whenever I go into iTunes to perform the restore, it's giving me a funny message and it won't let me do it. It says something like not having the proper update or proper software, but the silly thing is, I don't have the option to update it and I shouldn't have to anyway, because I just got the dang thing a week ago! This is very upsetting, and I hope someone here can help. It is a 30 GB 5th gen.

I know the difference between restoring and updating, it's just that when I go to restore it, I get two buttons. One says restore, and the other, which is faded out anyway, says update. But when I click restore, I get a message saying that it can't restore. I am actually having problems getting my computer to even recognize the iPod right now, so I can't tell you what the message said specifically. Only that it said that I could not restore the iPod because I didn't have the right kind of update or software to do so. I'll keep working on it and see if anything changes, but right now, not much progress is being made.

I have my catalog "Back Up Each Time Lightroom Exits" checked, and always have. That means the catalog should have been backed-up and saved everyday, if not more than once on some dates. So with a a major problem now and needing to use the Catalog backup from last Friday, I go to my Lightroom Backups folder - and the most recent one showing not only isn't yesterday, it's OCTOBER 28 !?? Where the hell are the daily backups between October 28 and November 14?

Oh wow - JET LAG strikes agin - my apologies; I have located the missing weeks of back-ups. After getting home from a 30-day trip to Europe, I had changed the location of my LR catalog back-ups to an external drive, and forgot that I did that. I have found them, and all is good. Never operate Heavy Machinery without enough rest. Cheers

You probably can, but this type of configuration is not recommended or supported by Apple.
Two cautions if you want to try this:
    1)  The Time Capsule has to be configured to "Join" your existing wireless network in this type of setup...and to do that, you must know the exact type of wireless security that your network is using.
    2)  Backups are likely going to take twice as long. The wireless signal must travel from your computer to the wireless router and then from the wireless router back to the Time Capsule.  Two "hops"......even if the computer is located close to the Time Capsule.
If you want to try this, we can tell you how....but with no guarantees on your results....since this is not officially supported.

  • I have backed up my ipad to my laptop prior to updating to the latest IOS and now I want to restore the backup back onto the ipad but it says there is not enough space? I have tried unticking all apps i no longer need, music etc but this still doesnt work

I have updated up my ipad2 which had the original version on it (4.??) to the latest version of IOS. Before I did this I backed up the ipad to my laptop so I wouldnt lose precious pics and videos of my baby boy.  Now that the latest version is on the ipad it is now asking me if I want to start as a new ipad or restore my backup from itunes.  So i select restore my backup from itunes and connect to itunes but it now says there is not enough space to do so.  I have a feeling it is because there are alot of pics on our ipad which i presume are all in this backup, many of which we do not need on the ipad anymore but I have no idea on how I go about deleting these pics??  And how do I find where on my laptop this backup is and most importantly the video and pics of my baby boy.

Restoring an iPad from an iTunes-generated backup should not require an Apple ID password.
Did you encrypt the iPad backup? If so, then trying to restore will require entering the encryption password.

  • I followed the steps to restore to factory settings now I can't get back my info from a prior backup. My pads screen was frozen on the connect to iTunes I needed to restore. I had to setup my pad as if it was new. How do I acess my prior backup

I followed the steps to restore to factory settings now I can't get back my info from a prior backup. My pads screen was frozen on the connect to iTunes I needed to restore. I had to setup my pad as if it was new. How do I acess my prior backup

Once again, KP is correct, but I just want to add that if you don't see the backup in the drop down menu on the summary page of iTunes when you choose the restore from backup option, then the backup is unfortunately gone. If you backup your computer, the iPad backup should probably be in that computer backup. I use Time Machine with my MacBook Pro and can access backups from months ago.
On a side note, I also archive backups from time to time. If you right click on a backup name in iTunes>Edit>Preferences>Devices (Windows) or iTunes>Preferences>Devices (Mac) you can save that backup or archive it. It will be date and time stamped. I have no idea why I do this to the degree that I do it, but I probably have 12-14 iPad backups archived in iTunes.

My iPhone has crashed during a sync and now I can't restore from backup as it is asking for password to load the backup yet neither the lock code for the phone or my iTunes Password are working... I have no other password to call upon and need the restore to retrieve info onto my phone, I am a real novice to this...... please help, !!!!

If anyone else is looking for a solution to this same problem, I was able to get it working looking through several older discussions.
The solution was to use the password that I had on my iTunes account the very first time I set up the iPhone about a year ago.  I changed my iTunes password about 10 months ago;  but apparently, the backups continue to use the password that existed when the phone was first set up.
A couple of troubling things with this are that 1) I didn't apply a password when I did the backup this afternoon so I don't understand why it was required when I did the restore a few hours later. and 2) it makes zero sense why iTunes would not be smart enough to use the current accout password when requiring the password to restore from a backup made with no password.
I thought iTunes and Apple were smarter than that.  With so many posts stating exactly the same problem, it is clear that this is bug in the software.
    Best,
    Craig
