My Battery 'Exploded'

Exploded might be a bit of an exaggeration, but i cant think of any other way to describe it. See the pictures for yourself. Will my 3 year warranty cover this kind of damage, I don't really want to have to pay £100 for a new one.

Any help would be great

yikes! i would think that apple would recall such batteries. This looks very dangerous and I think they'd want to know about it. Give them a call.

  • My iphone 3GS battery exploded, and made the whole phone bloated.

My iphone 3GS battery exploded, and made the whole phone bloated.  I contact my local apple support and they said it is a normal case when battery is used for more than one year.  Where else can I can some reasonable explanations and solution from apple about my phone.  My phone cannot be used, and I have lost alot of valuable data and photos.  Can I recover them?  What can I do now?

If you've been using your phone as recommended, you've been syncing your data to your computer frequently, and importing any photos taken by the iPhone to your computer (or using photostream).  If you  havent' been doing this, then you've no one to blame for any data loss and any phone, which can be damaged, dropped, stolen or otherwixe become inoperable was NEVER meant to be a storage device.
As far as your battery is concern, is is NOT normal for the battery to "explode" after a year.  Contact an authorized Apple service provider or Apple itself to see what your replacement options are.

  • [3GS] Upgraded to iOS 6 and battery exploded.

    Hi,
I recently upgraded my 3gs to latest iOS, and today the battery exploded.
When i called the Apple support, they told me its supposed to happend to older
iPhone's (2 years) to protect the battery from being charged when its old.
So when i asked him if its supposed to wreck my iPhone, he just say yes,
and gave me an offer to repair it for $350.
The only thing he kept asking me was if i got burned when it exploded.
So, what do you guys think, is a 2 year iphone old enough to explode?
    Regards
    Marcus

Not sure about that, but for the repair price of $350 what I do know is that you could upgrade to an iPhone 4s or 5.

  • HT2101 My iPhone's 4 battery exploded. What do I do next? 1 year warranty period is over; however, this is a clear hardware issue which I didn't cause (didn't drop the phone, the battery just exploded while charging the phone)

I put my iphone to charge for about an hour. After an hour I found that the battery exploded. It literally exploded pushing the back cover off the whole thing. That is crazy... iphones explode?? what if this happened in my pocked and some nasty liquids going all over.
Please let me know what do I do next about it. 1 year warranty is gone but it is not my fault the thing exploded. Should be some kind of hardware issue. I found on the internet that this happens quite often.

I had the same thing happen to my iPhone but much less extreme. The back had popped away from the frame at the top, below the headphone jack. I tried to push it back but it would not stay. My first thought was that this was attributed to a bad/bloated battery. I took it in to my local Apple store where it was diagnosed as having a defective back. I brought up my bloated battery suspition with the Genious who instantly shrugged it off. The back was defective and that was it.
A new back was ordered and when it came in, I took the phone in for the back to be replaced. The new Genious went back to their service area with the phone, emerging a few minutes later stating that the back was not the issue...it was a bloated battery which had pushed the back off. They ended up replacing the phone under warranty.
Yours is very extreme since on mine, only one corner of the back was pushed away. I certainly hope you can get Apple to correct it without charge since this is clearly an issue with a bad battery and a dangerous one at that. Best of luck to you.

  • 3GS battery exploded. I know it's a long shot, but does anyone know if I took it to an apple store if they'd be able to get my photos off it? Or are they long gone?

3GS battery exploded. I know it's a long shot, but does anyone know if I took it to an apple store if they'd be able to get my photos off it? Or are they long gone?

The iPod's battery may be shot, especially after going without use for a couple of months.  And yes, you can bring it to your local Apple store to have them take a look at it.  They'll be able to determine what your options are.

  • 2007 MacBook Battery exploded on plugin after no charge for 3 months

I have a 2007 MacBook Pro. I plugged it in to charge it for the first time in 3 months and the battery straight-up exploded after 20 minutes. I was told by a miscellaneous apple store employee that "batteries do that". What? Should I have expected an explosion? It warped the outside and everything. It always ran hot and when I took it to the genius bar was told that batteries "run hot". What? Now I feel like I am being given the run around.
Obviously, all warrenties are expired, but after exploring the communities it looks like there are inconsistancies with how this is being handled. Might I have some guidance?
I am a long-time Apple user and I have never heard of this issue before now.

    Might I have some guidance?
    call apple and ask them

  • Battery exploded

My trackpad stopped working... everytime my hand even rested near the track pad, I couldn't type. My son just took my computer to the store to see what was wrong. They said the battery is exploding. Is there a recall for this? Does this cause additional problems? Oh my gosh, I love my Mac.

If the battery is swelling then I hope they removed it ?
It needs to be replaced right away and is usually not covered by any warranty (but you can always ask)

  • MacBook Air battery exploding/expanding

    Hi,
I'm based in Dublin, Ireland and have a 1st Gen MacBookAir with an exploding/expanding battery. See attached pics below.  My warranty is expired but I've seen this issue listed in a number of other posts. Looks like a product defect that should be recalled. I was advised to remove it ASAP before it did further damage to the case and motherboard, or worse. Other than buying a new battery has anyone out there any advise on who in Apple  to contact  as my MacBookAir is out of warranty. Thanks

Did you press the representative for outlining a scenario for which the user could have possibly contributed to the battery's demise?
Or, was it pointed out to you that there is any documented directive from Apple that a prophylactic replacement of the battery should be implemented at a given interval?
I fount eh following article regarding lithium batteries, and possible causes for swelling, and I though the article was particularly relevant. http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_lithium_ion_batteries
It would seem that a possible explanation of a cause is overcharging. If indeed true, then the only apparent safeguard against this would be a working functional SMC. Unless the battery itself has a safeguard, which could have failed as well. Presuming that the SMC is reset with the installation of a new battery, such evidence of it's cause would then be moot, as a reset would likely resume normal operation.
    Just food for thought.
Apple's silence on the cause and effect here is probably the biggest problem. As they are in a far better position to nail down the cause, and an effective prevention remedy.

  • I don't have my iPod nano first generation because the battery exploded. How can I have it replaced in the recent iPod Nano Replacement Program?

I took the inflated iPod to the Apple Store where a genius said that the battery had expanded and it was no longer safe to use.  He said that sometimes happens with electronics and that I should dispose of it.  Although disappointed with that answer, I took it home where I then recycled it.  Anyway, now Apple is replacing this model of iPod Nano with the exact problem of problems with the battery.  However, I feel that it is a little late because the people who have already spent money replacing their exploded nanos have disposed of their first generations and cannot benefit from the program.
Don't get me wrong, I have been extremely satisfied with Apple in the past and even in the present.  However, I am unable to contact Apple to get help with this problem since I don't have a serial number.  I'm frustrated!

    Thanks!

  • My ipod battery exploded

    Hi folks,
I plugged in my I-pod nano to charge and sync over the weekend. I smelt a strange smell and when I looked over the casing was smoking and had completley warped! The I-pod is beyond use as the battery appears to have overheated and blown up.
I know back in 2008 there was a problem with a batch of batteries doing the same and Apple replaced faulty models. Does anyone know if this is still the case if your I-pod explodes? Luckily nothing caught fire and apart from burnt fingers no damage was done to anything else.

This has only been known to happen with first generation iPod Nanos.  I have not heard of it ever happening to any other model iPod.
Do you have a local Apple store you can take it into?

  • Recent "battery exploding" issue ..

I heard on the news that batteries have been exploding in alot of laptops. Recently, Apple was affected too. Does anyone know which computers need new batteries?
    I have a MacBook 13" -- which I bought around August 10th. Thanks.
    Mac Book 13"

The only reason the iBook and powerbook batteries were recalled is because they have the potential to overheat and catch fire. These batteries were made by sony and they were contaminated with metal flecks in the lithium ion solution. The macbook and macbook pro use lithium polymer/ion batteries and are not affected by the above defect.

  • Battery exploding

My iPhone 3GS's battery just expanded yesterday pushing the glass out of the case and bending the logic board. I't completely shot. My Kids were using it as an ipod. This is very disturbing. Had my kids been holding it at the time, if the packaging broke open they could have been seriously hurt. I'm very disappointed. Especially since I found a number of posts around the same time as my battery goes, several other 3GS owners are having the same issue.

Mine did the same yesterday and as I dont have apple support i can't get through to any technical staff. It seems to still be expanding and I'm concerned this is dangerous, is there anything toxic in the battery I need to be aware of? I'm 8 1/2 months pregnant and could do without the stress of this...especially as I now dont have a working phone.
I dont have an apple store in my city and can't get around anywhere at the moment, or for the forseeable future with my baby due to arrive any time now i'm reluctant to leave my house let alone my city.
I'm furious about this after emailing apple support with my concerns and getting an automatic response back which was of no use at all. I should be charging apple for my time trying to find how to get to the bottom of this considering these are not cheap devices.

  • Exploded Battery on Macbook Pro 17"...

Had a horrible experience over the weekend with my son's 17" macbook pro. The battery exploded in his lap burning him fairly badly and scaring the whole family to death as we were driving at the time. The online site says there is no support for this machine nor is there a recall? Is this true? I have read about batteries exploding on other laptops, but never thought it'd happen to me... Can someone point me to a source to get this thing traded in. I have photos of all the damage for those who are interested...

There used to be a recall for these batteries, but evidently it has expired. Since then, Apple has evaluated batteries on a case by case basis, and I gather that they will usually replace a distorted battery, under the theory that if a battery breaks open, it is defective.
Try making an appointment at the genius bar and take in the MBP and the battery. Bring in your photos. Talk to the store manager if necessary. If no go, call Apple on the phone and ask to speak to Apple Customer Relations.
Do not replace the battery in the Mac. Double bag it in a couple of zippies and give it to Apple for proper disposal.
My sympathy to your son! I have heard of defective batteries splitting open and leaking, but nothing like this. How about posting a picture of the battery for us to look at?
    Good luck!

  • Battery has bloated. Is it "dangerous"?

    Greetings,
Yesterday, I came back home and brought my MacBook Pro out of my bag. I noticed something strange: my battery had bloated (while I was walking to go back home, probably).
Can low temperatures (freeze) make batteries bloating? What else can be done this (especially yesterday where I didn't anything so special)?
Then, my uncle examined the battery (he's supposed to know better than me, but I'm not sure). He said I just had to stick* the sides and there would be no further problems. The button (5 lights indicator) is still working perfectly (I haven't put the battery back since I noticed the problem).
Is he right in saying I can continue to use my bloated battery? (I'd prefer "yes", as a new battery isn't cheap). I'm currently afraid of the battery exploding (I have heard it could).
*I'm not sure of the correct word (sorry for my english that lacks words).

You need a new battery now. Although the danger of the case "exploding" are low, the swelling puts pressure on various case components and can permanently damage the computer. The first things to go are the trackpad and keyboard functions. Also a swollen battery can quickly become a leaking battery and the electrolytic chemicals inside will do fatal damage to your computer.
The best action is to remove the battery and take it to an Apple Store. Sometimes they treat a swollen battery as defective and replace it without charge. Depends entirely on the store, so they may tell you you have to buy. Nevertheless, it's worth investigating. In short, one way or teh other, you have to repalce this battery.
    Info on temperature is here:
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
Reference to the "running without a battery" issue here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2332. The article does not say how much the processor slows, but knowledgeable people here say it's either one-half original processor speed or 1 gHz.
