My BDP-S5500 is supposed to be region free but it is not....why?

The BDP-S5500 is adverstised as a region free player however I cannot play multiregional dvds. Why?

Hello m1klynch,
Sony does not sell/manufacture region free BluRay players.  It appears that you purchased a modified unit by a non-authorized Sony retailer.
Region Code playback is explained in the Instruction Manual for the BDPS5500 on Page 40.
BDPS5500 Instruction Manual
Region code (BD-ROM/DVD VIDEO only) Your player has a region code printed on the rear of the unit and will only play BD-ROMs/DVD VIDEOs labeled with identical region codes.
Thank you,
---Chris

I bought ed sheeran's x album and it has been downloading songs as he released them just fine but now it has stopped.  I was charged for the entire album but have  not gotten any emails from iTunes or do I have the option to download, it says I must purchase it again please help

If you are doing it on your computer's iTunes then does the Store > Check For Available Downloads menu option find it, and/or does it show in the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page for downloading :

  • DVD region free

I travel all the time and pick up DVDs all over the world which I can play at home on my region-free player. But it's frustrating not to be able to play them on my Toshiba Satellite M65 S9091. I bought it in the USA, changed the DVD region to 2 because I live in the UK and dare not change again because one day I might have to change for urgent business reasons and don't want to limit my options. I've already had to do that twice, so am close to the limit.
However, it's a real bind 'on the road', stuck in a hotel not being able to play an old favourite region 1, or something just picked up at the airport.  Can I unlock the DVD drive to region 0?  I'm not worried about warranty - my laptop is four years old! (It's given excellent, trouble-free service, by the way!).
I suppose I could buy another make new - most of them play all regions nowadays - but £500-£700 for casual entertainment seems wasteful when the roof of the house needs looking at before winter sets in!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You could buy a USB external DVD drive that is region free, then you can play your discs, and if you ever decide to upgrade the laptop, you won't have to worry about having to find one that has a region free DVD in it.

Assuming you've done a system wide search for it including the Applications folder and it's not there......
I think you will need to address this with them - did you pay them for the application? Or was your purchase price to include it? And the question(s) to ask them:
If the app store states that it has been downloaded, ask them where it is and which Apple ID they used. (the store keeps track of Apple IDs and machine IDs on everything you download).
I have absolutely no faith in their advice; however, in this case, it's not so much technical advice, but an answer to your questions: you paid for something and it appears not to be there.

  • External DVD player/burner region free?

    Hi there,
This kind of question has been posted before but the latest thread is from 2006 so I just wanted some up to date information.
My optical drive has been through its 5 changes and has settled on region 2. I want to watch and back up a region 1 dvd. If I were to buy an external DVD player would my mac force it to read only region 2 or would it be region free?
If it is region free does anyone have any recommendations on a good external DVD drive?
    Thanks very much.

As I understand it, it is ultimately the DVD drive's firmware that determines that drive's region setting, not the Mac itself (although it's the Mac that initially lets you change the region stored in that firmware, up to five times). When you first connect an external DVD drive, its region encoding will be whatever the manufacturer set it to be.
If you want true region-free playback, you'll have to find a DVD drive whose firmware can be updated to make the drive region free. This process always used to be much easier on a PC than a Mac; I don't know if that's still the case.

  • Getting my macbook pro DVD player  to become region free

I travel a lot. The last 3 years has been 5 continents and over 20 countries. The fact we now live in a globally accessible world means this DVD region BS needs to stop. Good example, in the next 6 weeks I will travel/live in 3 different DVD regions. Why I shouldn't be allowed to use my laptop for work/travel everywhere I go is ridiculous.
Rant aside, I have found a few things online, but am wondering if there's something authoritative as to how to go about doing? Also, are there any complications vis-a-vis apple care? Or any other issues that I should be aware of?
    Thanks.

This is a murky subject. Basically, DVD region codes aren't meant as a DRM measure since they don't affect the copying of a work, or restrict playback by an individual, only by device (there's nothing preventing you from having a drive for every region). For members of the World Trade Oragnization (like the USA), it doesn't qualify as DRM either and, in fact, it technically not permitted by terms of the WTO's General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and Technical Barriers to Trade agreements.
So, why do RCS-enforcing drives still exist? First, because DVD producers want them to and require DVD manufacturers to include it in order to license the DVD trademark and CSS technology. Technically speaking, DVD manufacturers are allowed to provide mechanisms to disable region codes in their products (which is why most set-top boxes have a way to disable them by typing certain codes using the remote control). In response to the WTO rules: the availability of region-free options, plus the ability for people to own separate players for specific regions, allows the media companies to argue that RCS doesn't constitute a barrier to trade or a market discriminator. So, as long as there exists means to circumvent RCS restrictions, the restrictions are legal to implement (so goes the argument).
Why do media companies region code their disks? By dividing the world into economic subdivisions, they can exercise price controls / discrimination. In fact, Blu-Ray discs have different market segmentation because the economics underlying the controls have changed.
Anyway, the gist is that while it's perfectly legal for you to make your player region-free (in fact, in several parts of the world, you'll find that RCS is officially considered an illegal restraint on free trade), there's no official mechanism for you to do so on your Macintosh computer. Depending on the model of drive you have i, you may be able to find replacement firmware on the Internet and update it, but doing so will void your warranty from Apple.
Most people will simply purchase a small USB external drive that's region-free or can be flashed to be made region-free. Depending on what part of the world the drive was to be marketed in will determine whether the drive is region-free by default. Generally speaking, only drives from Matsushita drives are consistently RCS-enforcing. In many countries, code-free or region-free players are the default.

  • Mac Mini Region-Free Drive?

I was curious if anyone knew whether the Mac Mini's optical drive was region-free, as far as being able to play DVD's from other parts of the world?
For instance, I live in the USA (Region 1). I'd like to purchase a couple of DVD's from Britain (Region 2). Will they play in my Mac Mini? Will I have to download any plug-ins, etc. to make it work?
    Thanks!

The drive isn't region free, no. It can swap region codes 5 times (if I recall) but after that will remain on the last one set.
The easiest way to resolve this is to download VLC player. It doesn't take any notice of region codes, so the region 2 DVDs you want to play should work just fine. You can set VLC player to be the default application for DVDs in the CDs and DVDs preference pane.
VLC player can be downloaded from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

  • Region free NTSC and PAL

    Hi all.
I'm hoping someone can answer this question for me.....
I wish to create a DVD to be played in various regions (PAL & NTSC). I know that in Encore CS5 I can create a Region free (0) DVD but do I need to create a PAL and an NTSC version (Im currently working in PAL)?
OR can I just use 1 version to be played worldwide?
    Thanks

    AhSo...!
I have never checked CUSTOM so have never seen those options
But, as Jim said, those options are only active if you are going to send a file off to a replication house to have a "glass master" made, and the replication house then does the coding for copy protection and/or regions
For an actual burned disk that YOU make, the options (and copy protection) do nothing at all

  • When photo stream is supposed to be fixed?my photos  is not going to photo stream from camera roll, so when this problem will be fixed by apple?

when photo stream is supposed to be fixed?my photos  is not going to photo stream from camera roll, so when this problem will be fixed by apple?

There is nothing wrong with Photostream.  The "problem" is likely in the way you are using it.
In order for photos to be moved into Photostream, two things must happen.  (1) you have to be connected to Wifi, and (2) you have to exit the Camera app. Unless both of those things happen, the photos will not be transferred to Photostream.
So, shut down your camera app, and connect to Wifi.  Wait a while, and the photos you took with your iPhone should be transferred.

  • Is MacBook Pro's DVD Region Free?

I was about to order a Region 3 DVD but then I realized that my MacBook may not be able to read that... Can MacBook Pro read Region 3 DVDs?
I bought my MacBook Recently almost right after apple introduced Intel Duo Macbook Pro...

DVD region selection is an issue you should be careful with.
I had selected region2 as I was going to be using only 2 region dvds but later on moving to India where there are so many region dvd's available I am confused how to get my DVD player work.
Out here on the forum users have suggested using VLC player to BYPASS the region on DVD player but on my 3month old Macbook Pro the VLC is not running any of the dvd. It is giving me weird error. (cdda: no audio tracks found
main: no suitable access module for `dvdnav:///dev/rdisk1') Dont know what it means.
Good luck with your dvd viewing.
    Cheers!

  • Region Free dvd player NEED HELP

Is the dvd player that comes in my powerbook g4 region free? as in it can play dvds from anywhere such as england or germany if its an american computer

Wow. I am amazed. If that really works, than I shall try it too. What did you do to make that happen? I am afraid to change the settings too many times for it to be fixed then.
And - regarding VLC player - it only works as a work-around, if the actual drive is a region free drive. And this has not been the case since April 2004.
