My Blackberry Curve unit unexpectedly shuts down -- any suggestions?

Dear BB Community
For the past week, my blackberry curve 8310 has once or twice a day shut down unexpectedly. The only way I can get it back on is to take out battery and then reboot it. At first I thought it only happened when the battery ran out of charge but yesterday it happened when I had what I thought was a fully charged battery. Not sure if this is a battery problem or something else. Appreciate the support. Thanks Steve

Hi steveadolph and welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums!
You should try backing up your BlackBerry and reloading the software using the following article"

• My Blackberry Curve 8530 keeps shutting down

WHy does my BB Curve 8530 keep shutting down every half hour or so? And of course, it takes 9 minutes for it to restart so I am missing calls and texts many times a day. Is it a software thing that can be fixed? I am not upgradeable for another 7 months, so I'm stuck with this phone! Help?

Hi rowinchrist,
Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community.
To rule out any possible software issue that may be causing your BlackBerry® Curve™ 8530 smartphone to shut down, please try to back up your data using the BlackBerry® Desktop Software and perform a clean reload of your BlackBerry® Device Software.
For further instructions, please see the following KB articles.
For Windows®: "How to perform a clean reload of the BlackBerry Device Software for Windows" http://bbry.lv/GI9beY
For Mac: "Perform a clean reload of BlackBerry smartphone application software using BlackBerry Desktop Software on a Mac computer" http://bbry.lv/J0UN1U
Please test to make sure the issue has been resolved before restoring any data from your backup file.
Thanks.

• Blackberry Curve 9360 Frequently shutting down at random

Having some real issues with my blackberry shutting down at random. Somtimes in my pocket, somtimes when its just sitting on a table, often several times in a day. No, before you ask, its not getting unlocked and shut down by accident. Ensured its not just a low battery issue, as it happens even when it has been fully charged for several hours. When it eventually boots back up, it seems to have forgotten the time and date. It is, very inconvieniant. I am however by no means an expert when it comes to phones, as this is the first one i've had that does anything more than call and text, so any help or advice anyone could give would be greatly appriciated.
Random Details:
Provider: Orange
Model: Curve 9360
OS System: Had some real issues finding this, ill write down what i found (though its probably incorrect). 7.0 bundle 1825 (v7.0.0.400).
The only app i've downloaded onto it is sky news, and the battery has been replaced and played with many different ways to no improvement.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
I recommend that you attempt to boot into Safe Mode:
KB17877 How to start a BlackBerry smartphone in Safe Mode
It may take you multiple attempts to get the ESC key sequence (press/release/hold) correct, so be patient. When successfully into Safe Mode, think carefully...what happened just before this behavior started? A new app? An update? A Theme? Something else? Think carefully as the smallest change could be causal...and attempt to undo whatever that was.
If your BB remains under warranty, it may be just as well to cease any further diagnostics and seek support from your warranty service provider.
Good luck and let us know!

• Imac keeps shutting down any suggestions?

Mac desktop keeps shutting down or screen freezes when not in use. Any suggestions on how to fix?

• HT2448 the button restart sleep cancel shutdown keeps appearing every 30 seconds, if I don't cancel, it shuts down, any suggestions out there?

How do I make the retast sleep cancel shutdown option stop appearing every 30 seconds. If I am working on safari it doesn't happen but does in mail, when idle etc/ thanks in advacne for any suggetions, EireCowboy

A number of sleep-related issues can appear after incremental Mac OSX updates, including the inability to properly go to sleep, problems waking from sleep, and having your display go to sleep without your Mac going to sleep. The most common culprit is Bluetooth. Try these tips to fix your sleep problems.
WAKE UP
In System Preferences>Bluetooth, uncheck Allow Bluetooth Devices To Wake This Computer. If you are using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you'll have to wake your Mac by pressing the power button.
FILE CORRUPTION
Your Bluetooth preference file may be corrupt-you'll need to delete it. Turn Bluetooth off, then go to the /Users/user name/Library/Preferences folder. Look for a file called com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and trash it.The OS will create a new preference file when you enable Bluetooth again.
ENERGY SAVER
If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
-/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
-/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--
(username is your name or System Administrators name)
-/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
Some, in these forums, have had luck fixing sleep issues downloading the Combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
Yours would be the 10.4.7 Combo update. Others reading, download the combo update that applies to you!
Cheers!

• Mac Mini "unexpectedly shutting down"

Within the last week, my mini (less than two months old) has started suddenly posting a screen (black with grey/white writing), stating that it is has unexpectedly shut down after being on for about 20 minutes. I am instructed to hold down the power button and restart. The problem occurs when I am in different programs and when I looked at the report that was generated it was a kernel error. Any ideas of what the problem is or how to fix it? If the message comes up again (it hasn't the past two times), then I will copy it and post it here.
TIA-
Campbell

The problem with diagnosing this issue is that it's neither clear what was wrong with the system when it was repaired, nor what was done to resolve it at the time. While these events may have nothing to do with the present issue, they may be directly related.
As an example - you say that the system was not hot when it recently shut itself down, but had the repair involved removal of the logic board and the thermal pad wasn't replaced (as described as a requirement in the service notes) then it would render the system far more likely to apparently random shutdowns, because heat would build up more quickly and trigger protective mode with little apparent heating. That would also explain why the restart options don't seem to work.
Thus it might be a good idea to ask the repairers exactly what they did to the system when they had it, before contemplating a potential fault in the power unit.

This is the error log file (im not sure if it gives any information about the shut down but will provide it nonetheless)

• Xserve G5 unexpectedly shut down

Hi there,
We are still using an old Apple Xserve G5 for minor backup jobs. So far the Xserve is running very reliable. A year ago the Xserve unexpectedly
shut down for numerous times. As I found out the guys from the colocation connected the Xserve with a wrong port on their power reset system. So, as
soon as another colocation client initiated a power reset, a shutdown was forced on my Xserve.
Problem: A couple of days ago this kind of behavior reoccurred. My remote card showed me no display signal. So the Xserve has been completely
shutdown. The system.log doesn't show me any useful entries like localhost kernel[0]: ApplePMU::PMU forced shutdown. There are no entries before the system startup logfile entries. This time the server is attached to correct power supply unit and the power supply is working normally.
Unfortunately my ISP says that there were no maintenance on the colocationrack or any kind of power outage during this timeframe. I am still not sure
about that…
Anyone have seen this error on those old Xserve models?
Thanks

3 times in last few days, while digitizing HDV
footage in FCP 5.1via FWire400 - the g5 has
unexpectedly SHUT DOWN. There's no Kernal Panic
warning - the system just flat shuts off as if the
power was pulled.
Have you tried copying the footage to the external SATA hard drives instead? I have had all sorts of problems with FireWire enclosures no longer working properly. If it works with the SATA setup you will know its probably the FW drive or its enclosure.
The process of elimination goes on,
Michael

are locked user files or that have incorrect permission a bad thing?
Yes.
why am i removing symantec?
Short answer: Because it's worse than useless and worse than the imaginary "viruses" you're afraid of would be if they really existed. For the long answer, see below.
1. This is a comment on what you should—and should not—do to protect yourself from malicious software ("malware") that circulates on the Internet and gets onto a computer as an unintended consequence of the user's actions. It does not apply to software, such as keystroke loggers, that may be installed deliberately by an intruder who has hands-on access to the computer, or who has been able to log in to it remotely. That threat is in a different category, and there's no easy way to defend against it.
The comment is long because the issue is complex. The key points are in sections 5, 6, and 10.
OS X now implements three layers of built-in protection specifically against malware, not counting runtime protections such as execute disable, sandboxing, system library randomization, and address space layout randomization that may also guard against other kinds of exploits.
2. All versions of OS X since 10.6.7 have been able to detect known Mac malware in downloaded files, and to block insecure web plugins. This feature is transparent to the user. Internally Apple calls it "XProtect."
The malware recognition database used by XProtect is automatically updated; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders.
The following caveats apply to XProtect:
☞ It can be bypassed by some third-party networking software, such as BitTorrent clients and Java applets.
☞ It only applies to software downloaded from the network. Software installed from a CD or other media is not checked.
As new versions of OS X are released, it's not clear whether Apple will indefinitely continue to maintain the XProtect database of older versions such as 10.6. The security of obsolete system versions may eventually be degraded. Security updates to the code of obsolete systems will stop being released at some point, and that may leave them open to other kinds of attack besides malware.
3. Starting with OS X 10.7.5, there has been a second layer of built-in malware protection, designated "Gatekeeper" by Apple. By default, applications and Installer packages downloaded from the network will only run if they're digitally signed by a developer with a certificate issued by Apple. Software certified in this way hasn't necessarily been tested by Apple, but you can be reasonably sure that it hasn't been modified by anyone other than the developer. His identity is known to Apple, so he could be held legally responsible if he distributed malware. That may not mean much if the developer lives in a country with a weak legal system (see below.)
Gatekeeper doesn't depend on a database of known malware. It has, however, the same limitations as XProtect, and in addition the following:
☞ It can easily be disabled or overridden by the user.
☞ A malware attacker could get control of a code-signing certificate under false pretenses, or could simply ignore the consequences of distributing codesigned malware.
☞ An App Store developer could find a way to bypass Apple's oversight, or the oversight could fail due to human error.
Apple has so far failed to revoke the codesigning certificates of some known abusers, thereby diluting the value of Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. These failures don't involve App Store products, however.
For the reasons given, App Store products, and—to a lesser extent—other applications recognized by Gatekeeper as signed, are safer than others, but they can't be considered absolutely safe. "Sandboxed" applications may prompt for access to private data, such as your contacts, or for access to the network. Think before granting that access. Sandbox security is based on user input. Never click through any request for authorization without thinking.
4. Starting with OS X 10.8.3, a third layer of protection has been added: a "Malware Removal Tool" (MRT). MRT runs automatically in the background when you update the OS. It checks for, and removes, malware that may have evaded the other protections via a Java exploit (see below.) MRT also runs when you install or update the Apple-supplied Java runtime (but not the Oracle runtime.) Like XProtect, MRT is effective against known threats, but not against unknown ones. It notifies you if it finds malware, but otherwise there's no user interface to MRT.
5. The built-in security features of OS X reduce the risk of malware attack, but they are not, and never will be, complete protection. Malware is a problem of human behavior, and a technological fix is not going to solve it. Trusting software to protect you will only make you more vulnerable.
The best defense is always going to be your own intelligence. With the possible exception of Java exploits, all known malware circulating on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of so-called "Trojan horses," which can only have an effect if the victim is duped into running them. The threat therefore amounts to a battle of wits between you and the scam artists. If you're smarter than they think you are, you'll win. That means, in practice, that you always stay within a safe harbor of computing practices. How do you know when you're leaving the safe harbor? Below are some warning signs of danger.
Software from an untrustworthy source
☞ Software of any kind is distributed via BitTorrent, or Usenet, or on a website that also distributes pirated music or movies.
☞ Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, doesn't come directly from the developer’s website. Do not trust an alert from any website to update Flash, or your browser, or any other software.
☞ Rogue websites such as Softonic and CNET Download distribute free applications that have been packaged in a superfluous "installer."
☞ The software is advertised by means of spam or intrusive web ads. Any ad, on any site, that includes a direct link to a download should be ignored.
Software that is plainly illegal or does something illegal
☞ High-priced commercial software such as Photoshop is "cracked" or "free."
☞ An application helps you to infringe copyright, for instance by circumventing the copy protection on commercial software, or saving streamed media for reuse without permission.
Conditional or unsolicited offers from strangers
☞ A telephone caller or a web page tells you that you have a “virus” and offers to help you remove it. (Some reputable websites did legitimately warn visitors who were infected with the "DNSChanger" malware. That exception to this rule no longer applies.)
☞ A web site offers free content such as video or music, but to use it you must install a “codec,” “plug-in,” "player," "downloader," "extractor," or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown one.
☞ You win a prize in a contest you never entered.
☞ Someone on a message board such as this one is eager to help you, but only if you download an application of his choosing.
☞ A "FREE WI-FI !!!" network advertises itself in a public place such as an airport, but is not provided by the management.
☞ Anything online that you would expect to pay for is "free."
Unexpected events
☞ A file is downloaded automatically when you visit a web page, with no other action on your part. Delete any such file without opening it.
☞ You open what you think is a document and get an alert that it's "an application downloaded from the Internet." Click Cancel and delete the file. Even if you don't get the alert, you should still delete any file that isn't what you expected it to be.
☞ An application does something you don't expect, such as asking for permission to access your contacts, your location, or the Internet for no obvious reason.
☞ Software is attached to email that you didn't request, even if it comes (or seems to come) from someone you trust.
I don't say that leaving the safe harbor just once will necessarily result in disaster, but making a habit of it will weaken your defenses against malware attack. Any of the above scenarios should, at the very least, make you uncomfortable.
6. Java on the Web (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related, despite the similarity of the names) is a weak point in the security of any system. Java is, among other things, a platform for running complex applications in a web page, on the client. That was always a bad idea, and Java's developers have proven themselves incapable of implementing it without also creating a portal for malware to enter. Past Java exploits are the closest thing there has ever been to a Windows-style virus affecting OS X. Merely loading a page with malicious Java content could be harmful.
Fortunately, client-side Java on the Web is obsolete and mostly extinct. Only a few outmoded sites still use it. Try to hasten the process of extinction by avoiding those sites, if you have a choice. Forget about playing games or other non-essential uses of Java.
Java is not included in OS X 10.7 and later. Discrete Java installers are distributed by Apple and by Oracle (the developer of Java.) Don't use either one unless you need it. Most people don't. If Java is installed, disable it—not JavaScript—in your browsers.
Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java on the Web can't be trusted. If you must use a Java applet for a task on a specific site, enable Java only for that site in Safari. Never enable Java for a public website that carries third-party advertising. Use it only on well-known, login-protected, secure websites without ads. In Safari 6 or later, you'll see a lock icon in the address bar with the abbreviation "https" when visiting a secure site.
Stay within the safe harbor, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can practically be. The rest of this comment concerns what you should not do to protect yourself.
7. Never install any commercial "anti-virus" (AV) or "Internet security" products for the Mac, as they are all worse than useless. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use one of the free security apps in the Mac App Store—nothing else.
Why shouldn't you use commercial AV products?
☞ To recognize malware, the software depends on a database of known threats, which is always at least a day out of date. This technique is a proven failure, as a major AV software vendor has admitted. Most attacks are "zero-day"—that is, previously unknown. Recognition-based AV does not defend against such attacks, and the enterprise IT industry is coming to the realization that traditional AV software is worthless.
☞ Its design is predicated on the nonexistent threat that malware may be injected at any time, anywhere in the file system. Malware is downloaded from the network; it doesn't materialize from nowhere. In order to meet that nonexistent threat, commercial AV software modifies or duplicates low-level functions of the operating system, which is a waste of resources and a common cause of instability, bugs, and poor performance.
☞ By modifying the operating system, the software may also create weaknesses that could be exploited by malware attackers.
☞ Most importantly, a false sense of security is dangerous.
8. An AV product from the App Store, such as "ClamXav," has the same drawback as the commercial suites of being always out of date, but it does not inject low-level code into the operating system. That doesn't mean it's entirely harmless. It may report email messages that have "phishing" links in the body, or Windows malware in attachments, as infected files, and offer to delete or move them. Doing so will corrupt the Mail database. The messages should be deleted from within the Mail application.
An AV app is not needed, and cannot be relied upon, for protection against OS X malware. It's useful, if at all, only for detecting Windows malware, and even for that use it's not really effective, because new Windows malware is emerging much faster than OS X malware.
Windows malware can't harm you directly (unless, of course, you use Windows.) Just don't pass it on to anyone else. A malicious attachment in email is usually easy to recognize by the name alone. An actual example:
London Terror Moovie.avi [124 spaces] Checked By Norton Antivirus.exe
You don't need software to tell you that's a Windows trojan. Software may be able to tell you which trojan it is, but who cares? In practice, there's no reason to use recognition software unless an organizational policy requires it. Windows malware is so widespread that you should assume it's in everyemail attachment until proven otherwise. Nevertheless, ClamXav or a similar product from the App Store may serve a purpose if it satisfies an ill-informed network administrator who says you must run some kind of AV application. It's free and it won't handicap the system.
The ClamXav developer won't try to "upsell" you to a paid version of the product. Other developers may do that. Don't be upsold. For one thing, you should not pay to protect Windows users from the consequences of their choice of computing platform. For another, a paid upgrade from a free app will probably have all the disadvantages mentioned in section 7.
9. It seems to be a common belief that the built-in Application Firewall acts as a barrier to infection, or prevents malware from functioning. It does neither. It blocks inbound connections to certain network services you're running, such as file sharing. It's disabled by default and you should leave it that way if you're behind a router on a private home or office network. Activate it only when you're on an untrusted network, for instance a public Wi-Fi hotspot, where you don't want to provide services. Disable any services you don't use in the Sharing preference pane. All are disabled by default.
10. As a Mac user, you don't have to live in fear that your computer may be infected every time you install software, read email, or visit a web page. But neither can you assume that you will always be safe from exploitation, no matter what you do. Navigating the Internet is like walking the streets of a big city. It's as safe or as dangerous as you choose to make it. The greatest harm done by security software is precisely its selling point: it makes people feel safe. They may then feel safe enough to take risks from which the software doesn't protect them. Nothing can lessen the need for safe computing practices.

• MBP unexpectedly shuts down for no reason- help!

MBP unexpectedly shuts down for no reason.
My MBP has been working fine, until I updated to 10.5. Originally this problem started in Bootcamp running XP, but has now done this once in OS X, just a while ago. There seems to be no difference- even when the psu is plugged in. Just now when it did this again, I pressed the power key and the led on the front blinked really fast, then there was a tone- like it was doing a firmware update (but I did the firmware update months ago!).
I've done a power reset- taking out the battery and holding the power key down for 20 seconds, which seems to have helped, but then again this problem seems to be rather sporadic, and one can never tell when it is going to happen next.
Oh yes, there is a mechanical 'click' that sounds when it does it- like a relay click. Is there a relay power related IC on the motherboard?
Any clues anyone? (I'm sending this exact letter to Apple as well)
Tom

It's an interesting thread, but I seem to have the problem even when the cord is plugged in. I did have battery problems when I first got this MBP, but they seemed to settle down once I used the computer a bit more. FWIW, I have now got them mostly while using Bootcamp. BC beta 1.3 was really stable and good. It wasn't until I bought Leopard that this problem started. And again, it's only happened 3 or 4 times now.
I'll just have to keep saving. I'm sure Apple will wise up to this sooner or later. (Incidently, I haven't been able to send anything to Apple as I can't find their direct contact addie. Can someone 'remind' me? Thanks!

• PSE8 unexpectedly shuts down

I bought PSE8 from download about 6 months ago and loaded it on my desktop - a mid-range HP. Yesterday, the desktop died and I replaced it with a new, more powerful box - 8G RAM, a 945 processor and 1T of hard disk space. After installing PSE8 on this desktop, I noticed that it would start up fine and run for a while, then unexpectedly shut down. I'd get a Windows box telling me PSE8 had unexpectedly shut down and I'd be notified if Windows found a solution (not holding my breath for that.)
This never happened with PSE8 on my old HP, although Premier Elements 8 was useless due to the same problem - it would shut down after just a couple of minutes, and I spent hours on the phone with Mumbai trying to resolve it, and never did. I switched to Sony Vegas for video, and am very happy. But, I'm doing a lot of printing for the holidays, and I need PSE8 to run and not shut down.
Can anyone give me any advice on how to solve this problem? It is unique to this new machine. I am doing a lot of printing, and am hooked up to an EPSON R1900.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer.
RBC

Hope you would have got solution of your issue. If you again encounter this issue, try deleting the PSE preferences and then you can try launching the application.

• Unexpected Shut down when moving macbook pro on my 'lap'

In the last month or so, I've been suffering from an unexpected shut down of my mac book pro - which is quite annoying.
The issue seems to be (and it is reproducable) that after a few minutes (or seconds sometimes) of moving my mac from a flat surface (e.g. a coffee table) onto my 'lap' the computer just shuts down (no warning).
I can reproduce this by holding my mac in both hands above my lap and rotating away from me (i.e. screen closer and keyboard futher away)....
After some googling, I think this could be related to the sudden movement sensor (and a suggestion was to reset my smc by doing shift-ctrl-option-powerbutton when the mac was powered down). But this hasn't worked.
Anyone experienced similar issues?
I'm using a 17inch early 2011 mac book pro, running OS X 10.8.3 with the latest software updates installed.
It doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing, i.e. watching videos, writing emails, using lightroom, photoshop.
I wonder if this is related to any recent udpdate?
Thanks

• My Blackberry Curve 8520 Keeps Shutting Itself Off...

Moderators, I really need your help.
My Blackberry Curve 8520 Keeps Shutting Itself Off after my power supply got damaged (the cord was cut open and the two small cables were touching each other causing it to spark a little). Now I turn it on and just 5 to 10 seconds later it shuts itself off everytime. The media card is damaged too. Last night I charged its batteries and 5 minutes ago it was already drained. I dont want to lose my contacts, notes or BBM contacts.
Please at least help me diagnose the problem.

Hi dalstongirl
Have you already sent your BlackBerry in for service? If not, I would advise checking for any software updates by plugging in your BlackBerry to your PC and going to www.blackberry.com/update
