My Blackberry - its a love hate relationship

I love my Blackberry because it allows me to stay in touch and up-to-date while I am out of the office. I hate it because in order for me to have that flexibility I have to disable most of the security features on my smartphone.
I have a Pearl 8130 and we use notifylink on mobile devices to download / send messages from our corporate e-mail system. When I enable the firewall on my blackberry (and application permissions) messaging functionality does not work.
Another wierd issue is with my contacts. With encryption enabled my contacts  between my blackberry and and corprate e-mail do not synch all the information. I have this issue even with the configuration of my blackberry to no include my contacts in the encryption data.
I'll admit that I'm new to the smartphone, but as an IT Security person, these are pretty important features that I have to live without.

  • DSL and wireless ~ love/hate relationship

Well, I'm back.  Starting a new post but adding the old so those interested in this little soap opera love/hate relationship between my DSL and wireless WRT54G router can follow along without commercials.....
    http://homecommunity.cisco.com/t5/Wireless-Routers/DSL-and-Wireless-something-isn-t-right/m-p/331539...
It's becoming a tiring game, trying to second guess my router....what will restore the connection today?  Everything is working wireless BUT the connection needs to repaired continually:
The Wii won't connect so we boot up either the laptop or the desktop computer, then all of a sudden the Wii connects.
The desktop takes forever (around 10 minutes) to connect but once it does, it either works fast or each page load will take forever....never know till you're in there working.
Sometimes turning the wireless router and DSL off will reset it and it will work fine.
Sometimes running a network diagnostic resets the system.
Sometimes doing a repair on the network will do it.
We did learn that plugging in the ethernet chord makes for instant access, so we know its not the DSL or the ISP itself.
any suggestions?  Is it time to break up with my old wireless router and find a hot new young thing?  Or is there something else going on that I haven't worked out yet?
Thanks for your help in advance as always!!

Have you tried upgrading the router's firmware...?
You can try by upgrading/reflashing the router's firmware. After upgrading/reflashing the router's firmware, reset the router and reconfigure it from scratch.

  • Love / Hate Relationship with Photoshop Elements

I am having a love/hate relationship with Photoshop Elements!  Love the page design capabilities and hate the lack of capability on the print end.  Kodak does not give any choice in the book they will print from Elements.  All I can get is a #$%& die cut cover!  Is there anyway that I can order other options that I know Kodak has available when creating a book using Elements and their site.  I want to be able to choose a custom cover!  I have tried Kodak to get answers.  I have tried Adobe (impossible, unless maybe you pay).  Neither are very helpful!  The only answers I get are use the Elements designed pages and place them onto pages that you create in their software.  Problem is that one needs a jpeg file to do this.  No online program seems to recognize .PSD or .PSE file types.   HELP!
Bob, Barbara you both seem to be very knowledgable...any ideas...
Anyone with any help can answer here or [email protected]
    Terry

    Terry:
Yeah, the photobook print options are limited. (Although, the built in Kodak and Shutterfly books are very nice)
One thing to try differently is to use the Print At Home selection on that first screen after the clicking on the PhotoBook option (assuming you are using PSE8 here) (use Photo Collage with PSE7)
Down that path, you will get a few more choices in page size. It will still create a multi-page document (a .pse) while your building your book, and when done, you can print the pages of the book out as a .pdf. Many book printing services will take in a PDF.
Another option is to do a single page at a time and save them as .jpg's. A little more work in keeping your various files together and ordered properly, but it would give you ultimate flexibility.

  • Love/hate my time capsule

Can I just tell you all that I have a love/hate relationship with Time Capsule?
I love that it automatically makes backups that I can go back in time to retrieve.
I hate how it grabs so much procecessing power when it is doing it's thing. I use Photoshop, After Effects and Cinema 4D often and time capsule seems to know when I am using those programs and decides THAT is the best time to begin backups. At that point the machine slows to a crawl. Arghhhhh!
    End of mini-rant....

Just to be clear.. your love hate is with Time Machine..
That is the software that decided ... ahhh now he is in the middle of important work.. lets do a backup right now and kill it.
Time Capsule is a dumb as a board router with a hard disk in it.
Methinks you need.. a better computer.. C2D won't cut it if you are running mulitple applications.

  • ADOBE Jpeg inserts etc. LOVE HATE RELATIONSHIP

I have tried to insert a jpeg and a pdf signature. Im aware and have used the digital signatures as well. I am bothered that their are no links to research JPEG signature etc. When I did come across a help file pertaining to inserting a clip art, there was no information from Adobe, only a comment to the sender that this might be helpful. this has turned into a love hate search. ADOBE is one of the hardest programs to find information when one is using terms common in other programs such as MSWord etc. Adobe you have got to get your act together you are not user friendly.

Sorry, end user capability. I have located the snapshot. However when I used
the search box and typed in jpeg inserts or snapshot nothing came up.

  • Love Hate Relationship

This is my first Apple product and it is truly a remarkable phone and I have no intentions of getting rid of it. I love the great email viewing, app store, threaded text messages, ease of handling WI-Fi, 3G and EDGE without any intervention from the user. Very useful phone...Now the Hate part...
Since this is my first apple product I was expecting a whole lot more stability. The OS is slow, Safari crashes way too often, Contact app is painfully slow to load, many apps crash, Sound automatcally resets for no reason, Battery indicator stays at 100% after a full charge and tons of use...only a hard reset cures it, battery life. I do not want to have to reset my phone daily just so the battery meter registers correctly.
Will some of you lifelong apple fans please reassure me they will tkae care of this with software updates. I have no intention of returning it but if there is not any possible fixes down the road I am still within my 30 day return period.
I was expecting a whole lot more from Apple based on their reputation, but this phone is basically a mobile Vista launch. I have a hard time saying that because my Vista has been 10 times more stable than this product so far so that statement is even fair to Vista.
Does Apple usually do decent with their firmware upgrades?
Thanks for listening and let me know

I had the original iPhone from day one with the iPhone OS 1.0. While it worked decently enough, 1.1.4 was significantly better. I bought the iPhone 3G on launch day. I agree that many things have gone 'backwards' in terms of progress. SMS typing is occasionally (and for no apparent reason) extremely slow and full of lag for me. No idea why.
Safari, on the other hand, is MUCH improved in the 2.0 firmware. For one thing, my blog now renders correctly when viewed with this firmware, so some CSS changes must have been made under the hood.
I'm sorry the OS is running slow for you. I've not had any issues with the OS itself running slow, just the SMS thing I already mentioned. Of course, your definition of slow might be different than mine
With regard to the issues you're having, I can't say that I have experienced any of those either. The battery correctly displays the remaining life for me, and no sounds have reset themselves. Apps, though, do crash for me and do occasionally reset the phone completely. My suspicion for this is because developers have only been permitted to build apps for this firmware, not the 'old' iPhone firmware (1.1.4). Yes, Apple had beta testers, but how even then the 'market' was limited. It's not as though the developers have had the ability to seed their applications to hundreds of thousands of users all over the world, you know? Also, development for the iPhone platform is still in its infancy, so it's no surprise that developers have yet to work out all the kinks and bugs associated with it.
One thing that you might try is downloading and restoring the iPhone 2.0 firmware from iTunes. The firmware that shipped with the iPhone 3G (at least, with mine and I'm assuming the initial batch as well) is actually older than the firmware available through iTunes. It's still at 2.0 status, but there is a newer build of it available. I am not sure what the differences are between the shipping 2.0 version and the downloadable 2.0 version, but it may help with some of the issues you are having. (To install this, simply plug your iPhone in and choose the 'Restore' option. Make sure you do a backup first so you don't lose all your info, as this will completely reset the iPhone.)
From my own experience, Apple is normally very good in terms of patching bugs and quirks. Of course, this is also the place where upset people come for help and to complain, so I may be in the minority here Considering the improvements from the 'old' iPhone OS 1.0 to 1.1.4, I have faith that Apple will fix a great deal of what's 'wrong' with the iPhone 2.0 OS as well. My advice is to download the newer build of the 2.0 firmware and hang in there for the time being.
The iPhone 2.1 OS is rumored to already be in developers' hands as well.

  • Palm, WebOS, and Verizon...a love/hate story

    Dear Palm,
I love my Pre+! I cannot express how impressed I am with the ease of use, intuitiveness, and plain ol' "just works right" of my Pre+.
I hate that I need Verizon (I get a discount and they are pretty much the only provider that covers my home and work).
Verizon is treating the Pre+ and Pixi+ as...well, they aren't treating them as anything. It's almost as if they don't think Palm products are worth their time. They ignore any posts on their customer service boards, other than to post something like, "thanks for posting that issue, we will look into it." and then never revisit the post with a follow-up. I realize that Droid is a larger part of their revenue stream, but that doesn't justify ignoring other product lines.
As examples, Sprint was able to provide their customers with the WebOS 1.4.5 update, but Verizon won't even provide an update to their customers as to the status of the update. Is it in processing? Is there a bug issue holding it up? Is there a conflict with a Verizon application that needs to be resolved? These questions have been asked on their forums (and some of those threads have just been deleted) but the only response from Verizon reps is "we don't have any information on that at this time". I have reviewed their forums and when the same types of questions are asked on the Droid forums, there is at least 1 Verizon rep replying within these threads once every day or every other day for as long as the discussion continues. The same types of threads on the Palm board are answered (read no real answer, just a post with no real information) within a day or two and then the thread is ignored. They don't revisit a Palm thread once they have made an initial post. The Moderators on the boards spend more time "editing" post that are critical of Verizon (deleting sections) and posting "Keep the discussion civil" in its place so that anyone else reading the thread will never see the part of the post that actually criticized Verizon.
I am asking Palm to use every tool they have at their disposal to apply pressure to Verizon to stop treating Palm devices as second class citizens. They need to be reminded that they have an obligation to Palm and their customers to support the devices with the same level of effort that they provide to any other product line.
Post relates to: Pre Plus p101vzw (Verizon)

I am also anxious for Verizion to release 1.4.5. Recent posts from Verizon reps says the update will be available in a "couple of weeks". It is important to keep in mind however that Verizon is under no obligation to provide this update, nor are they obligated to provide it within a certian timeframe. AT&T customers are also waiting for this update.
As far as Verizon not giving the Pre and Pixi the attention it deserves, this is true. In their defense, the Droids are the hot selling product for Verizon so they get all of the love. If the Pre suddenly started flying off the shelf, Verizon would give it more attention.

  • FCPX loves & Hates

I'm liking FCPx more & more as I learn to use it. I love the color and audio analysts on import. I like the no saving. I like that everything associated with the project is kept in one place. I love that it handles newer codecs much better.
    Things I hate or hope they fix are;
P2 import can be hit or miss. You can't see the footage on both cards at the same time, therefore if the card spans it doesn't show that it imported correctly even if it did. I have had many failed clips only to import them later in FCP7 with no problems. You can't rename or log the clips. I guess you can rename them later in the event, but I liked to import and change the names as they are imported automaticly.
HDV is a aweful codec that I still have to work with from time to time. When exporting a hdv project to DV I notice that FCPx hangs on the last 3 seconds. I then changed the project to the DV setting and that worked, but it still hung on my last export. The video wasn't perfect either, it was choppy in places and acted weird.
The Blade tool gets buggy if you leave it on to long.
I'm a little scarred that Apple will charge for an update, I've heard that they might fix little things, but multi cam will be an extra charge.

    6. When creating web pages, the user should have the
option to not specify a page width in images. In this
case, the browser will wrap the images to the width
of its window. I despise web pages that require me to
scroll horizontally, and there's no reason that
contact sheets shouldn't look great on a 13" MacBook
while taking avantage of the real estate on a 30"
    Cinema Display.

  • The ability of blackberry ,its customers, and investors to progress exists within our own capability *edited as it was late when i posted the first time

As I read these various posts I see that blackberry users are innovative, demanding, creative, particular but effective smartphone users.  However sometimes our frustration manifests in the typical comments such as:
Come on blackberry how the eff could you not include in the z10 "mypin" auto generation in sms.  How the $hit do you think I invite most of my bbm contacts, not as many people are using blackberries you know so the email invite (yes it generates in email mode so you can simply copy and paste) is not as efficient any more.  There i am done ranting
What if we knew blackberry's attentions were focused in this support forum, and through it they could make sure their updates meet the needs of  their users? If bb'ers begin posting ideas within categories that would effectively cover all aspects from application/ interface adjustments to developments blackberry devices could effectively grow with the user.  It is a beautifully reciprocal experience as companies/individuals will have free market research and power of change.
Companies and developers can simply calculate if they have a positive return on their investment of time, cost, resourcess and efforts.  Whether it be a company who is  interested in direct billing, a contract or advertising OR a customer is interested in attempting to impact a change.  Both sides have a vested interest. People could see how many others potentially like their new ideas whether in be in the realm of functionality or applications.  I have been told (and have read a bit)  Linux systems are an awesome example of how ideas mixed with creativity, critique, feedback and passion drive the force that is innovation, which is amazing.
We have the opportunity to create what could include even more people now.  As mobile technology  spans the globe and should call for impeccable security, who better to afford you and your ideas both the collaberation potential with the luxury and security of the safest network in the business.  Since the phone is complete as a unit superficially; shape and weight are perfect for  a phone, 3.5 small buttons on the whold device, and perfect size screen for communication and visual needs, (also read my post on external battery charger.....bravo blackberry),there would only be a need for minor external and relative internal improvements as technology requires adaptation.  Thus the only thing to really continue to work on is the interface and user experience.
It is a work of balance and interdependence as both consumer/creator roles are shared by all parties within the company/owner and the open market.  The customer experiences the ability for impact on their own environment and efficiency/comfort withn that through application and function improvements, and blackberry gets happy loyal customers and supporters.
If we knew could post ideas with the help of blackberry of course (online tallies ballot system etc) to provide numbers or structure or to help guide the process of evolution in regards to this aspect of our lives (obviously they cannot make every change in the same amount of time as they would have to balance attending to ideas with great support to addressing ones with fewer numbers but specific ideas.  Also the factor of people who like the option as it is or would support change would have to be taken into consideration. ) than I am certain our dispositions would change when we encounter an obstacle because we know there is option for remedy.
For example with a great enough support for lets say to change a function of operation, there is also the possibility that the idea would simply inspire blackberry to offer it in various modes like ringtones notification or options within program settings are. I am sure as a group of intelligent users we could contribute to the establishment of a ratio for attending to the necessary factors involved.  How does it work with linux systems?
We would have to be patient of course as this would take time to gain the momentum it would require to have turnaround be speedy when it occurs.  It could happen, remember happy people are patient people.  Show us you hear us, make some of the changes that we see and address over and over in this post and it is inevitable you will see an increase in users and ideas which will only keep the progress in motion.
Eventually every idea reaches a point where you decide if there is enough reason to continue to develop, practise, or refine it. If not you simply move on to your next idea. Blackberry If you allow people to share ideas on an item that is so vastly involved in our daily lives how could you not continue to receive support.
If not this (as this is simply ones persons idea ) , then please blackberry, establish something that shows you hear and acknowledge us because you have a dedicated group of  driven and precis users who simply want their blackberry to work because they see its true potential and it has the ability to surpasses all other mobile experiences  in terms of convenience and output as it once did. Some of your users are also financial supporters who believe enough in what you have the potential to create they invest their own hard earned money.  I am both and I am certain others are in the same situation. I have never been so frustrated and so happy with the same item than I have at different points throughout my years with blackberry.  The customer support or lack of voice has been my biggest concern. We scrutinize your products daily, we have some of the best feedback for you, but without a reception they will only turn into complaints or rants.
Offer the capacity for impact at a level no one else has to this point in the game has. As you prepare to launch to one of the biggest user markets  in the world see that there is the potential to also create one of the largest communities of innovation in the world.
Smartphone users collectively creating a device that would be both seamless and secure anywherre it went on the globe  Owning the software and the hardware affords you this ability to offer us some input to some level. The ability to adjust to your users constantly changing environment is what every business owner should strive for.   Listen to your customers before they end up in the rant section of their forum.  Please continue to let blackberry know we would like to have our feedback heard.
    Thank you

  • N95 What a headache .. A love-hate Relationship

i have been always reluctant to but a new [roduct .. just off the launch .. but i have to admit i was sold on all the Damn adds .. I hate the marketing department .. they are doing such a good job ..
Ran a Mobile Store ( PArtner ) for 4 years .. I know that a new product has lots of hiccups so what do i do when i c the N95 .. Like a mooch i go and pay full Monty for it ..
Always waited .. this time i didnt
    So far i have seen
    1. it gps works and kills the battery
    2. the media player is great but kills the battery
    3. 3G network supported phone sucks the hell of the battry
    4. The camera is grrrrrrrrat no issues w/the battery there
    5. Wifi is great but the few minutes u actually manage to keep a signal the battery dies ..
Solution .. We need a new BAttery
I love the phone .. I want to hear an official response to the battery .. Updated the Software .. SEt the power usage on the wifi to a lower level .. I am using only GSM ..
I hate that i have to say this but i wish i had waited and i will never buy a product on launch again from Nokia .. I thought they were different from Motorola .. but NO
Some one tell me why i love to hate and hate that i love it

i dont own N95(yet!), but im using N80 right now.
i thought nokia will fix the battery problem on N95, but apparently they havent (according to you). the only phone that will replace my N80 is only the N95, no other. but whats the point of changing my phone if i will face the same problem (just for a small feature improvement)? i think phones with lots of great features should be supported by a great battery too...so im hoping that the guys at nokia could help us in this battery matter.
maybe launch a new stronger longer bigger battery for example??

  • YouTube and WiFi have a love-hate relationship

My iPhone for some reason refuses to play YouTube videos under WiFi. With Edge it will always play them but with not so great, albeit watchable, quality. On the rare occasions the WiFi works with YouTube the quality is great. When trying on WiFi I constantly get the "Error Playing Movie" message. Can ANYONE shed some light on this issue?

    Mechspike,
What type of WiFi router are you using? Is its built-in firewall enabled, or is it a work environment with a seperate firewall, and possibly proxy server?
Have you tried on a different WiFi network?
Can you play Quicktime movies via Safari? Try going to www.apple.com/quicktime on your iPhone, and selecting one of the movies, such as the video from the September 5, 2007 event.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • 5800 Love Hate relationship

Well, the wife finally got her 5800 and mine arrives today.  We went with the 5800 over the iPhone for many reasons but mostly due to the restrictions on the iPhone.  We both registered with the OVI place and with great hopes we added all our contacts (the 5800 would not read our contacts from our old phones) then we tried to sync the contacts to our phones without success.  OK, I am not a real dummy but this sure makes me feel stupid, we get the SMS and enter the code, save the message but still no contacts.  I know I am missing something but what?  I am guessing that it is something I am not getting right on the phone itself..  Any ideas from you folks?   BTW we do not regret anything so far, love the phones and in time OVI will be up and running as it should...
    Dewey

You saved the settings but did you ever actually sync with Ovi.com?
    1. You must open the sync application of your device (menu -> tools -> sync).
    2. You probably have PCsuite as active profile so you must change that to Ovi.com (options -> change active profile)
    3. After changing the sync profile you can start sync (options -> start synchronization)
    Hopefully this helps.

  • The image of my blackberry its all black

i believe its the flare that connects to the display its broken were i can buy these i need help
    someone give me a help.
    thank you

If you allowed your battery to go completely dead (less than 15%) plugging it into a laptop is as useful as skiing in the Sahara Desert. In short, forget it. You need to charge it with the supplied wall charger. Once you plug it into the supplied wall charger, you MUST wait for at least, at a minimum, four hours. This should be ample time to give it enough juice so that you may turn it back on. I emphasized the supplied wall charger because if you are using a third party charger, it may not work. Not all chargers are created equal, even though they may have similar USB plugs. Make sure its a Motorola wall charger and not a brand X wall charger.

  • I love/hate my new iphone

The phone is awesome but i have some things I am not happy with.
    1. THE VOLUME its weak. People say its fine others say its not. Trying going 75 mpg down a highway in a 93 Jimmy! My old phone was loud enough its rough with this one.
    2. I scratched my screen! Not apples fault, I just don't know how it happened. I swear i was careful with it, i think my cat got jealous and took a bite on it or something haha.
    3. The battery life is so short, mine seems like it would do about 36 hours, day and a half before dieing.
Other then that is awesome, flash would be nice, so would custom ringtones but I'm sure those are on the way.
You think theres a way for apple to make the volume louder on the phones? through software?

I do hope Apple can improve the volume via a software update. Not sure about this.
I have no problem with my volume. In fact people have been telling me how crystal clear i sound.
WOW! You scratched the screen? you know how difficult that is? Have you seen that PC mag video where they try to scratch, drop and damage the iPhone? It passed with flying colors!
Your cat must have done a real number on it.
If you're battery is draining, do you shut off WiFi, bluetooth and the Wifi "Ask to join network" settings?
Shutting them off when not in use will give you a nice long battery charge. It's widely known that wifi, bluetooth will drain your battery quick.
It's best to shut them off when not in use.
The same goes for email. If you have it set to check for email every 15 min or so, that's probably going to drain your battery...not as quickly as WiFi, but it will.
