My bookmarks folders aren't opening?

I have lots of bookmarks folders in my bookmarks menu, however recently they haven't been opening. If i hover over them it just shows a small square, and nothing happens if I click on them. However, I know that the bookmarsk are still there, because if I right click and choose open all in tabs, then the bookmarks in that folder will open. As well as this, I am also unable to create any new bookmarks - they show up if I open the Library, but not in my menu. Any help will be appreciated!

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

  • Suddenly some bookmark folders do not open anymore when I go under "bookmarks" if I use them in the sidebar it works. How can I fix this, it is only with 2 folders, all the other work fine.

I have created several bookmark folders and everything has worked fine until recently. Suddenly 2 folders do not open anymore when you hover the mouse over the folder.
If I have the bookmarks in the sidebar everything works fine.

-> click '''Firefox''' button and click '''Exit'''
Start Firefox in Safe Mode by Holding down the '''Option''' key while starting your Mozilla application.
As an alternate method, go to Utilities (in the Applications folder) and open Terminal, then run:
    /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -safe-mode
-> Firefox Safe Mode window will appear. DON'T SELECT ANY OPTIONS, just click '''Continue in Safe Mode'''
Firefox will open up with just basic Firefox. Check and tell if its working while you are in Safe Mode.

  • No way to STOP bookmark folders popping-open when dragging something across them

Bookmark folders in the bookmarks SIDEbar pop-open if an image is dragged across them not-quickly-enough. This is true even if the image is being dragged from, say, the Finder's desktop over to another Finder location or Finder folder, or to some other application (e.g. to be dropped into a Filemaker record) - and merely passing-over a Firefox window that happens to also be open though NOT being the active app. I'm told by Firefox support that there's no way to disable this "feature".
Furthermore, the folder then remains open, often obscuring all the other bookmark-sidebar folders until it's manually closed.
And finally, if the bookmarks sidebar isn't even open, this drag-across activity will often open BOTH the bookmarks sidebar AND whatever folder was the dragging cursor's accidental victim.
It's fine to have this folder pop-open as an OPTION, but it would be MUCH preferable to have the OPTION to shut-off this behavior.

Please note that the Mac's OS X has this folder pop-open feature, but (1) it is an OPTION that can be disabled in the Finder Preferences. And even if enabled, the user can set how much delay ioccurs before folders pop-open.
    Options GOOD! :-)
[To open immediately, Mac users have the option set and simply press the space-bar.]

  • Upgraded to Firefox 4.0 Can see and use all old bookmarks folders and bookmarks, but cannot see any of the old folders when I attempt to bookmark a new page- only see Bookmarks toolbar & Menu and unsorted bookmarks

Had several bookmarks folders under old Firefox. After upgrade to 4.0 all of these still work via bookmarks menu. Problem is, when I attempt to bookmark a new page and place it in one of my existing bookmarks folders with 4.0, the only folders that Firefox can see are the bookmarks toolbar, bookmarks menu, and unsorted bookmarks. How do I get Firefox to see the old folders so that I can continue to put bokmarked pages in them??

In the "Edit this Bookmark" window, use the 2nd drop-down button, that is to the right of the "Folder", to open a larger window that will allow more folder to appear. See the sloppy red arrow on the screenshot below.

  • When I try to bookmark a page the dropdown menu only shows 4 of my many bookmark folders.

I have a heck of a lot of bookmark folders. These show up in the dropdown menu when I click on Bookmarks in the toolbar. However just today when I try to bookmark a web page, I only am given offered four folders in which to file the bookmark. Clicking on "choose" doesn't show any folders at all that I've created. Same thing when I open MF in safe mode with addons not enabled.
If I click on "Bookmarks menu" in the bookmark window then click on the arrow to chose a file, I see an odd assortment of random bookmarks and files.
To complicate matters, perhaps: This morning Firefox went crazy. Details don't matter now. I followed instructions in MF support and saved critical files. Then uninstalled and reinstalled a new copy of MF. Created a new profile and moved critical files into it.
Am I missing a file? Is something corrupted? (How would I find it?) Why would MF not see my folders when asked to file a bookmark?
    Thanks

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
This can also be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • How can I delete bookmarks that aren't in a folder (unorganized)?

When I click on "Organize Bookmarks" I don't find a way to get to the bookmarks that aren't organized into a folder. I'd like to delete some and to sort others into the folders, but none of these show up. There is an item in the left bar named "Unorganized Bookmarks" but when I highlight it, it shows nothing as if it were empty. Is there another way I can access those single bookmarks to sort them and delete them?
    Thank you!

    Crazy K,
If you want to burn them, you need to have the song files physically on your local drive.
If they were purchased from one of the online stores that allows re-downloading (Amazon Digital Music, iTunes Store, etc.), just download new copies.

  • Under v33, 2 Win 8.1 PCs sync well; a WinXP PC communicates its bookmarks + bookmark folders, but not its tabs; a Win7 Starter Edition PC syncs nothing in & out

I just want to report inconsistencies in synchronizing 4 machines. ALL four were introduced to syncing in the last week or so under the latest Firefox. No account was open under the older sync method.
3 machines below run Firefox 33.0. The Windows XP machine runs Firefox 32.
Two Win 8.1 PCs sync well between each other (can see each other's tabs and bookmarks).
A Win7 Starter Edition PC syncs nothing in & out, even though the Sync icon turns when clicked on.
A WinXP PC communicates its bookmarks and bookmark folders to the Win8 PCs, but NOT its tabs. After the commands HISTORY | TABS FROM OTHER DEVICES in the Win8 PCs, no tab from the XP computer shows up, even though the XP computer has open active tabs.

    * How do I turn on sync logs:
    # Open about:config and turn on: services.sync.log.appender.file.logOnSuccess and services.sync.log.logger.engine.bookmarks
    # Restart Firefox and look at: about:sync-log
    # Logs and error messages will be located here
Please also use pastebin.mozilla.org for sharring any errors that relate to this issue.
    Thank you.

  • When bookmarking a page, I can't get the complete list of bookmark folders to dropdown in order to select any folder in which to bookmark page. What do you set to get whole list of folders in Bookmarks to drop down?

When bookmarking a page, I can't get the complete list of bookmark folders to drop down in order to select any folder in which to bookmark page. The 'Folder:' bar has 'Bookmarks Menu' showing. The arrow on the bar drops down 5 recent folders to which pages have been saved, but the pop down arrow to the right of the bar just opens to show the three categories and 'New Folder' button. What do you set to get whole list of folders in Bookmarks to drop down?

To all, embarrassingly enough, I have discovered that I didn't know how to expand the three categories including 'Bookmarks Menu' in the 'Bookmark This Page' pop up interface. It was expanded by default on the initial Firefox opening and first page bookmark attempt. Next use it only showed categories. I clicked and double clicked the 'Bookmarks Menu' line, but failed to see the small, shaded triangle used to expand/collapse list. If it appears collapsed, just tap triangle at left of line to see all folders. It seems to open the same way after I do it for first time. Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks for all the attempts to help.

  • Is there a way to have bookmark folders automatically collapsed in Safari when adding bookmarks?  This would be a huge convenience in navigating to the right folder w/o having to deal with an eye chart of a folder tree.

Is there a way to have bookmark folders automatically collapsed in Safari when adding bookmarks?  This would be a huge convenience in navigating to the right folder w/o having to deal with an eye chart of a folder tree.

    Myself as well...
I think it is a tremendous problem. Im my case it is extremelly important to manage, organize and sort favorites.
I am new to Mac and safari... and I spent a lot of time researching a solution for that thinking it was me that couldnt find this option. I like to use safari because of the "gestures". This is great. But when it comes to favorites, safari is a nightmare!!!
Also, I use to like the option in Firefox that we can have the leftside bar with the favorites and navigate to the links in the right. In safari the links are open in the full page. And then we need to come back to the favorite everytime.
I would be glad if someone could come out with good solution or suggestions how to deal with it in fafari.
    Regards.

  • I notice that in the new update to Firefox if I have two bookmark folders with the same name Firefox will end up deleting one of them.

Both of these problems with the bookmarks started occurring after I installed the latest update to Firefox.
I frequently have bookmark folders of the same name under the older version of Firefox and it has never been a problem before. It is now, and I notice that after I've created two folders with the same name Firefox will end up deleting one of the folders, almost always the older of the two folders (the one created first, chronologically).
I have also noticed that with the new update Firefox will occasionally fail to open all bookmarks in Tabs if I've asked it to do so. I can simply close Firefox and reopen the program and it will work again, but I don't know why this bug is occuring in the first place.

You are using two IP address ranges.. which results in the printer being cut off from the other network..
Why do you have two networks?? It is always better in home situations to run one network.
If you have work setup with an enterprise level router you can setup routes between the two networks.. this is not possible on domestic level apple routers.

  • I have been looking for the bookmark fix that allows you to bookmark the url in multiple bookmark folders

I've been busy the past hour looking for the update for bookmarks so we can add a bookmark in multiple folders without having the first bookmark automatically being deleted when adding the same bookmark to a different bookmark folder.

There's no "update" for that, it's a matter of learning a different method of saving a bookmark that bypasses the feature which identifies duplicate bookmarks.
There 5 ways to save a new Bookmark in Firefox: <br />
    1. {Ctrl + D} <br />
    2. Right-click and select Bookmark this Page. <br />
    3. Bookmarks > Bookmark this Page <br />
    4. Double-click the Star that is on the right side of the Location bar. <br />
''4a. (A single-click on the Star will save the new Bookmark to the Unsorted Bookmarks folder.)'' <br />
'''''This last method will allow duplcates to be saved.''''' <br />
    5. Left-click and drag the website image ''(Favicon)'' in the URL bar (or on the active tab) into the Sidebar view of Bookmarks {Ctrl + B} <br />
'''or''' to the Bookmarks menu bar item ''(the drop-down will open)'' and then onto the drop-down listing of your bookmarks and folder of bookmarks ''(folders will open)''<br />
'''or''' onto the Bookmarks Toolbar <br />- the new bookmark will be saved when you release the left mouse button
Firefox bookmarks have worked like this since Firefox 3.0 was released, back in June 2008. The [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/categorizing-bookmarks-make-them-easy-to-find?esab=a&s=bookmark&r=7&as=s Bookmarks Tags feature] was introduced in Firefox 3.0 to allow the user to categorize their bookmarks more easily than saving the same bookmark into separate folders.

  • I can't view my bookmarks folders.

When I open bookmarks I don't see folders that I've created. They are there in the dropdown box.
    How do I access them?

Is the problem is when you open the Library dialog, using either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+b
    * Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks
Or when you open the Bookmarks Sidebar, using either:
    * Ctrl+b (to open or close)
    * View menu (Alt+v) > Sidebar > Bookmarks
If you expand the Bookmarks Menu entry, you usually will find the same folders you can see on the drop-down list. Any luck?

  • I am unable to bookmark the same website in two different bookmark folders without one being automatically deleted by Firefox?

I am a recent convert to Firefox. Regarding bookmarks: it seems that you cannot create a new bookmark the same website in two or more different bookmark folders. For example, if I bookmark a website in a bookmark folder called 'ABC' and then bookmark the same website in a different bookmark folder called XYZ, the bookmark will be in XYZ, but will be removed from ABC. This happens even when I assign a different name for the bookmark in ABC and XYZ.
Is this the correct bookmark functionality or am I not doing something correctly? Thanks.

You can do a Copy & Paste in the Bookmarks Manager (Shift+Ctrl+B) to create a copy of a bookmark.
You can also drag the (fav)icon on the left end of the location bar to a folder in the Bookmarks menu drop down list or to a folder in the side bar (Ctrl+B) or to the Bookmarks Toolbar.
In the side bar you need to click to the left of the icon to prevent Firefox from opening the bookmark.

  • Is there a way to default to the ABC view within bookmark folders?

Just upgraded to Firefox 8. Also just transferred all my bookmarks from Delicious to Firefox bookmarks. Love most aspects of the system but when I open a bookmark folder/subfolder the bookmakrs are displayed in 'date bookmarked' order. I prefer alphabet order as it is much easier to look things up. I have tried using the 'view' menu to reorganise but every time the folders default to 'date order' after I've switched off and restarted my laptop. Is there a way to 'save' the alphabet order? (I am using Windows 7 on a Compaq laptop)

    '''''@moth2fic'''''
Well to sort bookmarks alphabetically I still use the easy solution :
Click on your bookmarks tab & scroll down to the folder you want to sort & right click on that folder name & when the little menu comes up just scroll down to "Sort By Name" & left click on that and that's it they are sorted alphabetically..
If you want to alphabetically sort the entire list of bookmarks just scroll all the way down to the bottom of the bookmarks list & in any open area just do the right click/ sort by name/ left click thing again & it will sort the entire bookmark list alphabetically...
Hope I understood your question correctly..

  • Lost-All bookmarks and bookmark folders

All my bookmarks and bookmark folders have disappeared. How do I recover them? I am using safari 1.3.2 Can anyone help with this?

    warning: it's long
I too lost all my bookmarks/folders in Safari -- after a Verizon DSL install-induced browser hi-jacking. See http://www.red-sweater.com/blog/?p=78
for a story that captures my own experience nearly to the last detail. But, unfortunately, unlike the blog author my bookmarks.plist was not a back up of my extensive bookmark collection -- it was a big zero, like some other responders to that reported.
I am a total amateur, just your basic user, and couldn't follow the code discussion toward the bottom of the blog, it's over my head. But, although not knowledgable, I am desperate and persistent and rarely accept "can't be done" answers, even if I don't really know what I'm doing and keep getting that same answer.
I tried all the standard suggestions so far, searching .plists, searching my hd for anything safari, anything bookmark, anything .html. Read many of the discussions on lost bookmarks, tried everything I could understand how to do.
I stumbled upon in the ~/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari over a thousand files with crazy number/character names that all have suffix ".webbookmark" I probably did have over 1000 bookmarks. When I double click one of those .webbookmark files in that folder, a webpage springs forth in Safari, one of my former bookmarks. Also, click in the finder on one of those ~.webbookmark file and 'get info' and it shows the .html file name and bookmark name for it.
I believe this is somehow my old bookmark collection, and not a history cache, for various reasons: upon clicking, I recognize the webpage that appears and I know bookmarked anywhere from a few months ago, as well as some oldies, but have not visited recently. Random spot checking seems like no sites I recently visited but did not bookmark are showing up.
Would not be fun to double click every one of the 1000+ .webbookmark files in the metadata/Safari to open the page it represents and then "add bookmark" in Safari, to restore my bookmarks. Is there some automatic way of doing that? Am I not understanding the metadata folders enough and have tricked myself into believing they are my real bookmarks and not history or useless stuff. It's totally possible my ignorant forays and fleeting glimpses (but not, out of the corner of my eye....) are fool's gold.
Can someone let me know whether this is worth pursuing, and if so, how, and if so how so in plain terms because of my limited knowledge and floundering around without understanding what I'm doing and what it means.
I know, I know, I should have backed up before I did the *&^@! install, I should back up before I do anything, and do it regularly anyway. Don't laugh too hard now, but get this, when I did back up before, I didn't know what I was doing and just backed up "documents" folder (see, told you I was ignorant; but, older and wiser now...) But I had no idea something like getting DSL would screw up my browser (and my apple mail -- that's a different awful story too, still unresolved) and who knows what else.
No, I have not used another browser since early 2005, and wasn't as 'bookmark crazy' then as I've been the last few years (or my life wasn't as complicated then and I didn't need to bookmark a lot of important, and I mean important, as well as obscure sites, that I don't need on a daily basis, but do need, but don't want to search through thousands of google hits to find the right one, when I realize I need it again...). Yes, sure, i will salvage what I can from IE and Netscape although they're way incomplete and frozen in time of simpler days.
A thousand curses upon my evil DSL provider who thinks browser/mail/etc. hi-jacking is fun and smart PR.
I will appreciate any help. (and it's understood if the real answer is "can't be done;" worth trying here though) Just point me to the right discussion if this has already been attended to.
    Thanks!
