My brand new macbook pro freezes ALL the time

Without even one single app running, this piece of garbage will freeze. I get the spinning pinwheel even when I open Finder. I have updated all software, don't game, never run more than two apps at a time, the two being iTunes and Safari.
I don't know what to do, I've had the notebook for literally less than a month and a half, and I am SO SO SO disappointed to the point that I hate it and want to break it. I have about 5 minutes from startup before I have to hard restart the computer, and once I do, it just stays frozen once it wakes back up.
I am at a loss, and any other message board I find is from 2011, where the "update" is that Apple has fixed the issue. My computer is by definition a worthless and useless two thousand dollar piece of machinery that I can't even use for longer than 5 minutes. I will not be purchasing another macbook. I just need to know how to deal with this one.

You are still under warranty.  Call Apple Care, get a case number and keep it handy.

  • Brand new iPod keeps freezes all the time, Why?

The problem started early this year with my old iPod classic (couple years old) was beginning to freeze all the time so I just thought it was time to get a new one so I did but the same probably happened straight away and just just died after 2 weeks of constant resting so I got a brand new replacement and the same thing is happening to this one too, my question is why does this still happen and how to stop it?

  • Macbook Pro freezes ALL THE TIME...not even a month old

What is the deal? I got the Macbook Pro because it was supposed to be the best computer, and literally I can't do anything on it beause it is constantly frozen with the spinning color wheel. I HATE it. It's the most non productive notebook i have ever purchased. I have a slighly older version of the macbook pro and it works just fine. The only problems I have ever had with the older version started after I updated the software. Now the old macbook freezes occasionally, but nothing like the new one.
Is it just a problem with Apple's new software???

That is definitely not normal, but it's very difficult to say what the problem might be without more information.  Open Activity Monitor and look at the System Memory tab.  Compare page outs to page ins.  If page outs are more than 10% of the page ins, you're having memory problems and need more RAM.
How much hard drive space do you have free?  If you don't have about 10% of your drive free, you can start having all kinds of strange problems.
Try starting up in safe mode...  do the problems happen in that mode?

  • Macbook Pro freezes all the time

    Hi,
I have a fairly new early 2011 Macbook Pro 13". It has been running perfectly fine until about last Wednesday. Now whenever I try to do anything, I get the spinning beach ball of death. It does'nt matter what program it is, I always get it. My HDD, which is the standard 500GB, only has 174GB used, so it is not an issue of being too full. My laptop fell off my desk in class on Tuesday, but was in my Speck hard shell case, which snapped, but there was not a scratch on the laptop. Now it is not really working. Could my HDD be failing for some reason?
    Thanks,
    Tyler

Have you tried repairing the hard drive?
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
If the above doesn't help any then reinstall OS X:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Brand New MacBook Pro Freezes When Playing Games

My sister recently received a brand new MacBook Pro courtesy of the University of Arizona and already she is having problems. When my sister plays a Java based game utilizing the Open Gl graphics plugin her computer will sometimes freeze after the graphics become distorted. during the freeze only the mouse will move and everything else is unresponsive, the only solution is to shut of the computer using the power button. All the updates have been installed and this doesn't happen any other time then when playing that game. This neither happens on her PC nor does it mine playing the same game. I'm not sure what the problem is and I would appreciate any help.

Is this Java based game Runescape? I experience the same crashes, ive tried using other things in-game other than the OpenGl and i still experience crashes, much more often when i have iTunes running while trying to play. Ive never had problems like this before, even while using older computers with much less memory, etc.. This is my first mac and id have to say it's not leaving a good impression. I planned to be able to play some games on this and consider Runescape requires very low CPU this is kind of sad that a Mac can't process it without crashing. Ive been reading lots of similar posts online and it sounds like Apple should be worried more about customer satisfaction than their own stocks. Hope something works out soon!!

I'm being shown an error pop-up message periodically saying "There was a problem connecting to the server. URLs with the type 'file:' are not supported." I have a brand new MacBook Pro, and at no time am I actually having trouble connecting to the server, but this message continues to pop-up several times a day at random intervals. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Or is my computer just having a glitch? Other than that, and a mildly sticking caps lock button, it's working perfectly.
    Thank you!

Alright it didn't solve it. Any other suggestions?
I haven't suggested a solution yet. I want to know whether you still get the messages while Time Machine is disabled. Do you? If so, try any or all of the solutions proposed in this thread:

  • If I backup my iPad to my new MacBook pro will all the apps be saved?

If I backup my iPad to my new MacBook pro will all the apps be saved?

All of your content should be transferred to the new Mac when you sync. However, if you want to be safe, you can select the transfer purchases options, then sync the iPad.
Read this article about syncing. There is a section in the article that states that all of your purchased content may not transfer over to new Mac when you sync. I have NEVER had that problem when syncing but the article does talk about transferring purchases just in case. Not a bad idea really ... better to be safe than sorry!

  • Brand New Macbook Pro one of the USB wont recognize device

Hi, I recently acquired a brand new macbook pro i5 core model for school. It was running perfect and I was so happy with my machine the last few days then suddenly last night my mouse didnt work no more. I thought it was strange so I tried the port that was closer to the power adapter and it worked in that slot. I tried plugging it into it several times again and no luck. I tried restarting my computer, no luck. I tried plugging in my Ipod nano, no luck but works in the other one. I went on here and looked for options. So then I tried resetting the Pram, and the smc, several several times, to no avail. I then even got this thing call usb prober and that didnt make it recognize it either. I am at a lost of what to do. The strange thing is though it WILL run my laptop cooler, it just will not recognize any devices?? Any help without having to go to a Genius would be great, thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Your USB port may not be delivering the power it should. The best thing to do would make an appointment at the genius bar and have it evaluated. You are under warranty, and this sounds like it may be a hardware problem that Apple needs to fix for you.
    Good luck!

  • Is it normal for my brand new macbook pro to have the fun running all the time and making noise?

There's a constant noise coming from the fan that I didn't have on my older macbook.

I suggest you STOP using that fan control program. At least the way you are using it.
The Fans (Not Fun) on any MBP run at 1900RPMs and yes All the Time. They are supposed to. You are trying to limit the fans to 1500RPM which it looks like one of them has stopped running because of this override you have placed on them.
If you think there is a Problem with the current Mac you have you have 14 days from date of purchase to return it for a full refund No Questions Asked. You can then buy another or something else.
No it is not normal to hear the fans when the system is at Idle, when you aren't doing anything on it. But once you start to Tax the system it gets hotter and the fans will then speed up to try and keep the system cool. They will speed up to a Max of 6000RPMs. As the heat builds and the fans spin faster yes you will hear them (actually you will hear the air moving out of the system more then the fans themselves).

  • Brand new macbook pro freezing

I recently bought a new macbook pro for college, maybe in mid August. At first it was working fine, everything going okay, then it randomly began to freeze. If I was listening to music the music would get stuck repeating the same sound, the cursor would freeze, and the computer would become unresponsive. I haven't downloaded or done anything to the computer that would cause this kind of response.
This is one of the panic logs I got (It froze less than five minutes ago) this ones from a couple of days ago.

  • Leaving Macbook Pro on all the time (as a desktop)

Hey guys, I have a 2010 Macbook Pro 17" and I'm thinking about transitioning it to a more sedentary lifestyle and turning it into my desktop. I currently use a PC as my home desktop, but it's old, slowing down, and uses Windows.
I have a few questions as I consider this move.
    1) Will I need to keep the screen open on the laptop all the time? I think that MBPs dissipate their heat through the front/keyboard, so if I do find a workaround to keep it closed all the time, will my laptop overheat?
    2) If I leave my MBP on all the time and plugged into an outlet constantly, will that drain my battery? I like keeping my main desktop on all the time as I do a lot of downloading, use it as a media server, and also like to access my desktop remotely. For the rare instance I want to unplug the MBP from the desktop setup, will I have any battery left to use?
The reason why I ask is because I'm thinking about two main options. The new iMacs are rumored to be coming out by the end of this month and I might just get that to replace my PC. However, I am thinking about holding off for the next generation of Macbook Airs (whenever that is) and just purchasing that, while turning my current MBP into a functional desktop. What is the downside of the using a MBP as a desktop instead of an iMac?
Please let me know what you guys think and recommend, and if anyone else uses this setup, please let me know how it is! Thanks!

    1. Yes, it's possible to close the lid and keep the computer going - there are several threads on this if you search.
Although the MBP vents out the back when the lid is closed, heat does dissipate through through the top (meaning around the keyboard/speakers/trackpad/etc) also. Feel with your the top of your hands the aluminum when you computer is working hard and you will feel the heat - closing the lid will limit this heat escaping to a degree. So while it's likely fine to run the MBP with the lid closed, if it were me I would raise the lid up a few inches when the computer is using high CPU or the fans are working hard. (By the way, if you've been to an apple store, you will see that their laptops are fitted with little plastic bumpers so that when the lid is closed it doesn't close all the way - it could be to prevent sleeping, but instead of modding all their computers they could have just turned off sleep on lid close.)
    2. As previously stated, it is good to power cycle your battery every month or so to keep it healthy. This is the nature of Li-ion batteries. Just unplug it and let it "die" once and a while. Leaving it plugged in most of the time won't destroy your battery.
Regarding iMac : It may have a better screen than whatever you currently have - they are stunning. Additionally, the current iMacs are more powerful than your 2010 MBP. But if you do decide to go that direction, I would agree that it may be best to wait till the iMacs come out with the improved Sandy Bridge i7's. If you don't need much horsepower, any of the 3 options will work - why not try out your 2010 MBP as your desktop for a bit and see how you like it, in the meantime you can see when the iMac comes out and compare that to your MBP desktop replacement/new MB Air idea.

  • Brand new macbook pro freezing when on the internet and won't fix itself

Three times tonight I have been on the internet and out of nowhere my macbook pro has frozen. I am unable to move the mousepad or click on anything or click out of the applications. I have to power off the computer to make it work again. How can i fix this? I have only had the computer for 5 days and I am confused at how this is happening already.

Take it back and get a new unit. If they say "We Will Fix it' then Return it for FULL REFUND, you have 14 days from day of purchase to return it No Questions Asked, and then buy another New unit.

  • Slow brand new Macbook pro- almost all ram being used up!

I just purchased my first mac a few weeks ago- a 13 inch macbook pro running snow leopard. I have been experiencing surprisingly slow performance- computers older than mine or others of the same model quickly multitask while I frequently sit watching the pinwheel spin. This problem seems especially evident when browsing. When using firefox or safari, when several tabs are open scrolling through pages is slow/delayed and opening new tabs freezes the computer for several seconds.
This occurs with only a couple of other programs open- maybe only itunes and ical for example. Meanwhile older and equivalent computers appear able to run even more programs simultaneously without such slow performance.
Using the Activity Monitor- it appears that 1.9 of my 2 gigs of ram are being used up. This seems unusual to me as not much is running. I still have 70 gigs of hard drive space available and have been keeping up with software updates. CPU is 89% free/idle.
Any suggestions or explanations for a new mac user? This new computer is rivaling my old PC running winodws xp in how slow it can run.
    Thanks

The same thing happened to me when I upgraded my older Mac Pro to 10.6. It turned out one process, #112 "coreaudiod," was using almost 100% of the CPU time. Use Apple's "Activity Monitor" in your Utilities folder to find out if you have a process using up the CPU.
In my case, I deleted "com.apple.audio.coreaudiod.plist" from the launchdaemons folder in the system library, restarted the computer, and that solved the problem.
