My brand new macbook's wifi "scans" every 2-3 seconds

purchased a brand new macbook last weekend brought it home to find that the wifi signal scans every 2-3 seconds...and shows me my router aswell as the 5 others that are around me. im told that it was my router but everything else that uses the same router for a wireless connection works great for example: nintendo wii, psp, itouch and my old R.I.P powerbook g4
so i had googled the problem online before i took it back to the apple store and found that i wasnt the only person with this problem. doing my research, it had told me to try and restart it in safe mode then restart it in reg mode...didnt work. i had read if this doesnt work then the airport card could be installed or not "seated" in the motherboard correctly or the antenna is faulty. being it was still under warranty and there was nothing i could do about checking on installation of the card itself i had taken it back to the apple store where they had told me "we will call you after we look at it"
well today: Oct 17th i had gone back to the apple store to pick up my computer that i asumed was fixed being it had been there for a full week. i was told that it was still on the "bench" and that they were yet to solve the wifi problem come to find out that they asumed i had opened up the macbook becasu there were screws missing on the left side of the computer.
i had explained to them that i hadnt removed any screws BUT when i had purchased it i had purchased 2 gb of addtional ram to upgrade the 2gb to 4gb so the computer was taken apprt by THERE tech.
well anyway to make a long story short there pretty much stomped on the wifi issue ive been having since day one when i brought it home so
HAS ANYONE GOT AN ANSWER FOR ME???
it is a black macbook 13.3inch widescreen monitor 10.5 osx/2.4ghz duo/4gb ram/250 gb hd
when turned on using wifi less then 5 feet away from the router (that works with everything else in the house) comes up "scanning" every 2-3 seconds so i have to wait for pages to load while it does so. what can i do to fix this???????
-acrim

if the apple tech at the apple store can't solve it then possibly ship it to apple for another look.... i don't think anyone can help you in the forum if an apple store tech already 'looked' at it...

I have set up a Netgear dual band modem which works well with the iPhone and an older MacBook, but with this brand new MacBook it asks for a password every time I reopen the computer and open safari. As you can imagine this is very annoying. It says I am not connected to the internet and offers me a choice of nearby networks including mine and then asks for a password when I select it. Why does it do this with our new MacBooks (also with my son's brand new one) and not with the iPhone, iPad and older MacBook? They happily automatically connect to our network after entering the password just the once.

Sig, I appreciate you trying to be helpful. I have no idea what issues you were having or what issue exactly pgrounds has been having. Your assumption that everyone's set up is the same as yours is false however. There are many many documented WiFi issues that are a result of Lion installs. Many have been solved by 10.7.1 and 10.7.2. Others have been solved by a large variety of work arounds. Others have not had their issues solved yet.
I am one of those. I have an IT background, and I spent the better of five hours digging up workarounds and attempting all of them. For the benefit oh anyone who is having similar issues, I have posted links to all of those workarounds here. None of them worked in my case, but hopefully they will help pgrounds or others.
So, once again, if you have a new idea, I'd love to here it. But if it has already been posted in one of these links, it's not helpful, let it go.

  • How long b4 Apple does something about WiFi not workin on BRAND NEW macbook

I've got a brand new Macbook Pro and I feel very stupid about buying it, as I can't use WiFi in 9 out of 10 places I go. Never had this problem with my G4 and all the other people who go to these same WiFi hosposts don't seem to have a problem. Honestly, I've tried every trick, every suggestion on every post on every forum. NOTHING solved the problem. How long before Apple addresses the problem?

When I had the wireless upgrade kit installed into my PowerMac G5 Quad, it suffered exactly the same problems. Dropped connections at random, yet my original PowerMac G5, sitting right next to the Quad, full signal every time.
Apple tech support couldn't shed any light on it, so I performed an erase and install. Completely wiped my hard drive and reinstalled from scratch.
Wireless worked perfectly from there on, still does, no problem.
With the 2 MBP's, I performed an erase and install prior to using the machine proper and neither have had wireless problems. The 15 inch was returned due to a grainy screen and I upgraded to 17".
All I can suggest, from my own experience, is to back up your user data etc, perform an erase and install, log into your network during first start up after reinstall. Worked fine for me.

  • Strange wifi problem on a brand-new MacBook Pro

Hey there, I'm new here. Desperation has got the better of me, and I hope I can get some advice.
So, last sunday I bought a brand new 13" MacBookPro with 2.8g i7 processor and 10.7.2 OS (I can't update to 10.7.4 because System Update tells me the download has been tampered with or corrupted after I waited 2 hours for it to finish, but I'm trying a direct download from the website). Here's the exact product: http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MacBook-MD314LL-13-3-Inch-VERSION/dp/B005CWIZ4O/ref= sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1340301247&sr=8-5&keywords=macbook+pro+13
Everything is all perfect except for a strange wifi problem. Note that the wifi does not turn-on or off, it doesn't disconnect after 'sleep', it doesn't get less speed, it doesn't constantly leave a preferred connection (once I chose my home wifi it always connects to it no problem). The wifi bar is always full. What is wrong is that the internet is kinda 'glitchy'. The best metaphor I can think of is that it's like a car that has to be pushed down the road before the engine can start. Please, bear with me because this is kinda hard to explain and I'm not good at tech lingos.
One of the symptoms is browsing can get really slow and inconsistent, almost as if the wifi gets turned off in the middle of browsing. For example: if I look something up on Google and then open 5 new tabs, probably only 2 or 3 of those tabs will eventually load while the other two will not get past the long 'http:.......google.....etc etc' address and will eventually show one of those 'error loading page because there's no Internet connection' notice. This happens a lot. Sometimes I have to refresh/retry loading a page a couple of times before it finally loads, then usually everything will get back to normal and I will be able to open multiple tabs with no problem, but in a couple of minutes I would try to open another site and the problem will start again.
So I tried to see how it does with downloading using iGetter. Fortunately I also have a Macbook (white-plastic casing one) and my brother has an old 2006 MacbookPro so I can compare. With those two older Apples iGetter starts receiving data in less than 8 seconds after I click Start, while my brand-new Macbook Pro can take up to 15-20 seconds, sometimes it doesn't even start at all and I have to re-click the start button. But once the download actually starts (on my new MacBook Pro), it downloads like normal, it doesn't stop and the speed is also as good as I can get. Strange huh? Hence, like a car that has to be pushed before the engine starts.
I also tried 'speed testing' from a website with all 3 laptops. On my old MacBook and my brother's MacBook pro, once I click 'begin test' it takes only a couple of seconds of 'ping' before the download/upload speed measurements start, but with my new MacBook Pro (just like with iGetter) it takes up to almost a minute before the measurements start, sometimes it won't start at all and I have to re-start the test.
Well, thanks for reading. And hope you can help me shed some light into this. Because it is really preventing me from really enjoying my new MacBook Pro. And if this is most likely a hardware problem, I'd better get back to the store and try to get it replace or something while it's only been 5 days. *cheers*

Hey guys.. Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, I bought the MacBook in Indonesia where there are no such thing as an AppleCare. The only option is to leave the Apple product to one of the 'Authorized Apple care centre' and have whoever do whatever to it without guarantee of success. As for returning it and getting a brand new one, I also don't know if there is such a deal here, but that's actually a good idea, will try to go to the store tomorrow. Although, I'm worried that the problem might be with OSX Lion or something and getting a new one won't help.
mark75090, I've tried resetting the router when I first noticed te problem, didn't work though. I've checked my new MacBook's wi-fi (option+click wifi bar) and it says 'PHY Mode: 802.11g', so does my MacBook and the old MacBook Pro. I don't know what those mean though, and I don't know whether or not my router is an N., can you tell me more please.. I have tried with the other two turned off, and only the new MacBook using the wi-fi but the problem persists. I have also tried connecting directly to the router, but as I described, the problem is too subtle for me to notice the difference.
Also, if I create a brand new Wi-Fi connection in network preferences and connect to my router through the new Wi-Fi profile, the problem seems to be gone for an hour or so, then it always comes back though. I have also just finally installed 10.7.4, but it doesn't help either.

  • Brand New MacBook Air Randomly Resetting (IMO WiFi Issue)

    Good evening,
    My problem is as follows:
I purchased a brand new Macbook Air last week and since the get go have been having issues while transferring large amounts of data over WIFI. The issue is that it seems when there is no activity (I leave the files transferring and have no interaction with the computer) and the files are transferring, some sort of error occurs and creates the system to panic and subsequently reboots.
I have contacted Apple, and they ran me through a few common procedures (Reset SMC, RAM, Disk Repair, etc...). On my own I also ran the Hardware Tool several times and the results was always the same (everything in perfectly working order). I also did a restore in the event that it may be some faulty system file, yet to no avail as the problem persists.
As per my title, I believe it has something to do with WiFi card, as I even disconnected all peripherals (USB Apple Keyboard & My Passport External HDD), yet again and as mentioned above the system continues to reboot without any apparent reason.
Below is a copy of the log, certain information has been changed such as UUID, but everything else is as is.
Could it be a hardware problem? As I am only seeing (as of now) this happen whenever I leave the computer and it is downloading a file.

  • I have a brand new MacBook Pro . I am trying to connect to the private wifi at my house but I need the IP address of my laptop . Everywhere I go on the laptop, the IP address is blank . How do I find the IP address if laptop is not connected to the wifi

I have a brand new MacBook Pro and I'm trying to connect to the private wifi at my house however, I need the IP address. Everywhere I go to find it, the adress is blank. What do I do ?

Your Mac won't have an IP address, at least not a valid IP, until you actually connect it to your home LAN. Not sure why you think you need the IP, you don't.
To connect to your home WiFi you need to know the SSID name, IE the name of your home WiFi, and the password for it. Once you have those two things click the little antenna looking icon on the right side of the menu bar and select your home WiFi name and click connect. A dialog box will pop up asking for the password, type in the password and click OK/Connect/Whatever.

  • ITunes downloads fast on old Mac mini but slow on brand new Macbook Pro on the same WiFi network?

    Hi all,
I have an old Mac mini that's from around 2008 and runs on Snow Leopard. I also have a brand new Macbook Pro with retina display that's running Mountain Lion. Both running iTunes 10.6.3.
I never noticed anything wrong with my MBP's connection speed until last night when I downloaded a free TV episode from iTunes. The download speed varied between 20KB/s and 40KB/s and it took me 7 to 8 hours to download a single episode. I checked my internet connection but there was nothing wrong with it, SpeedTest.net told me I had a download speed of 94MB/s and upload speed of 80MB/s, it was only iTunes that was unbearably slow.
Today I was browsing iTunes again and was planning to buy some movies, but again it took forever for the trailers to download. So I fired up my Mac mini just to see if it would be just as slow. Turned out my Mac mini could download the same trailers from iTunes at a much higher speed than my MBP (around 3MB/s on the ones I tested).
So what gives? They are on the same Wifi network provided by an Airport Extreme, and although my iPhone and iPad are also connected to it, no one else is doing any heavy duty downloading.
    Thanks in advance!

    7. Click + sign
    8. Add 208.67.220.220
    9. Click OK.
    10. Exit System Preferences

  • Trying to set up my brand new MacBook Pro and it does not connect with the wifi network I have selected for this purpose. Nothing wrong with the wifi as both my iPad and iPhone are happily connected. Suggestions for connecting to the wifi network accepted

Setting up my brand new MacBook Pro and it will not connect to the wifi network. Nothing wrong with the network which is happily working for my iPhone and iPad! Suggestions accepted for making this connection.

Fixing this is a two step process:
    1) System preferences > WiFi/Airport ...
... check [√] Ask to join new networks
"Known networks will be joined automatically.
If no known networks are available, you will
be asked before joining a new network."
    2) Remove unwanted networks from the list of "known" networks under
    System preferences > WiFi/Airport > (Advanced) > | Airport/WiFi pane ...
Close the window and save changes. If no joy, do a restart to ensure you are playing under the new rules.

  • Wireless slow on brand new Macbook

I have a brand new MB 2.2 and the wireless is horrible. I have tried a Linksys and Netgear router and the connection is worse then dial-up. I have a Vista laptop also and it works great on both of these routers. I also live in a apartment building and have access to other open routers including Apple Airports and the are slow also.
I have been reading the boards and the problem seems to be all over the map. I have tried every fix possible that I could find to try and speed things up, and none of them work.
I am at the point where I want to return the laptop as there seems to be no fix for this. If I wanted to return the laptop that I bought at a Apple store, will they still charge me the restocking fee? Any help would be appreciated.

I am having the exact same problem with my BRAND NEW MacBook. I have all of the updates installed and I still have this problem. I will look at the AirPort status in the menu bar and it will have all but one "bar/arc" and my download speeds are painfully slow. I have performed a ping (both outside my local network and to my local gateway) and I get 60% or more packet loss. If I reboot the computer, the download speeds are good but after a little while they crap out again. My wife has the 1st generation MacBook running Tiger and she has absolutely no problems whatsoever. It wasn't like this when I first got the computer and had just 10.5 installed. I don't even believe that I had the problem when I installed the 10.5.1 update. It seems to have reared its ugly head with the 10.5.2 update but I can't be 100% sure. Tonight, I plan on zapping the PRAM and running the disk repair utility but I don't feel too confident that it will help. My next step will be to head to my "local" Apple Store (about 1.5 hours away) and see what a Genius says about it.
Has anybody else had this problem? Does anybody have a grand solution that will fix this problem?
    Thanks to all for reading.

  • Brand new MacBook no longer working

I just got my gf a brand new Macbook Pro w/ Retina about 2 weeks ago. She's barely been on it, but it's been working fine during the few times she has been on it.
Starting yesterday, she noticed that she couldn't even boot log in because it would keep bringing her to a screen where it shows a disk, and it would basically freeze on her there. The only few things that she's done since she had it was set up her Apple ID and browse the Internet for the most part. I've installed Microsoft Office and that's the only thing that's been installed thus far.
Here's where I'm at now though. I've tried rebooting the MacBook Pro into OS X Recovery, wiped the HD using Disk Utility, and tried reinstalling Mavericks. Now it's giving me the "Install Failed. OS X could not be installed on your computer" error.
Not sure where to go from here, and I really don't feel up to going to the one and only Apple Store nearby, considering it's always a little aggravating to get in and out of that area.
Some other people who experienced this issue talk about a default installation DVD that came with their MacBook, but I've just bought 2 MacBook Pros and neither one of them came with a DVD. I don't even know why it would, considering there's no DVD drive. So what the ****?

    Welcome.
    1) Apple Support Communities are user-to-user support forums, not official Apple Support. It's late on a Friday night/early on a Saturday morning in North America, where many of the most dedicated ASC patrons reside. Many are off-line, doing something else, or asleep. If no one viewing the forums reads your post and has any suggestions, then you won't get any answers.
    2) You've posted in the OS X Mavericks forum. That's not necessarily the best place for posting a request for help concerning what appears to me to be a hardware (hard drive/SSD) problem on your MacBook Pro Retina. MacBook Pro would be a better choice.
    3) Based upon your diagnosis and actions already, I doubt there is anything anyone here can do to fix your computer. Since it's relatively new, use the warranty. If you're in the US, and still within the first 14 days, you can even return the computer for a full refund. You're still covered under the initial 90-days of free phone support too, so try that first, if you're not near an Apple Store. http://www.apple.com/support/contact/ Or click on the Contact Us link at the bottom of any Apple Support Community page.  Or just take it to an Apple Store or other Apple-authorized repair facility.
    4)  I can't speak for everyone here, but I scan the forums for new unanswered posts, in an attempt to offer assistance, so I rarely bother to read the new messages that already have responses, especially multiple responses, unless it's a request where I might have specialized knowledge of the OS, the program,  or the specific hardware. Because you've self-replied several times in the same thread, I think some people (far better qualified to offer assistance on your specific issues) here would assume that you've already gotten several replies.

  • I bought a brand new macbook, but it keeps asking me to update, but the email is "associated with another account" Help!

So I bought a brand new macbook from Amazon, and it came factory sealed (Not my first time buying a macbook, last one I bought was from Apple directly) but after I got this, I put in my apple I.D. and it told me there were updates available. I told it to go ahead and update, and it updated about half of the list, but the essential stuff (pages, notes, etc) it says "This software was installed using another Apple I.D. Please logon with that I.D. to install the software."  I'm a bit baffled by this as it is a brand new mac and so I don't know why anyone else's I.D. would be logged into this mac.  I'm not really worried about it though, as I don't really need to update my pages, etc, as I like what I have, but I'd love for this stupid "updates availble" popup to stop popping up every freaking day!!!
Anyone have any suggestions on finding out how to either gain access to update, or get rid of that "other" i.d. that is somehow associated with my brand new macbook?
I'm running OSX 10.9 if that is of any consequence.

Then it simply was NOT Brand New. Doesn't matter what the box looked like when you got it or if you went through the setup pages when you first turned it on. If it is registered to some other Apple ID then someone else had originally registered it and locked it to there ID.
Type in the serial number of the system into this page.
    https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
And see when it was originally registered.
Then send it back to Amazon as Used.

  • Brand new MacBook Pro- tons of permissions errors

So I just got a brand new MacBook Pro but am having some issues with it. I installed StarCraft 2 but will encounter a black screen that is unresponsive to anything (option-command-esc, for example), when I exit the program and once when I went to view a replay. I have to hold the power button down.
Blizzard told me that I should try to repar my permissions. Every time I do this, however, I get the same errors and they are never fixed. I don't know if this is causing my problem but this computer is brand new and I shouldn't have all these permission errors.
Here are the messages that I get:

    Permissions verification complete

I did do a search for a similar topic and I did read that some permissions are of no concern. However, like I said the guys at Blizzard said that it could be the source of the issue. Also, like I said, even if I do "repair permissions" and it says that it completes successfully, it has not really done anything. Even if I run verify permissions immediately after, I see the same problems.

  • Brand new macbook pro 2012 (no retina display) 95% battery health with 5 cycles? is that okay?

I know, another battery related question. I have recently bought a brand new macbook pro (no retina display), I calibrated the battery at least twice since Ive had it and it states that I am at 95% battery health with only 5 charges. Is that normal or should I bring my macbook in to be checked? Id like to get this settled before school starts in September since I depend on my macbook a great deal.
    thanks !

    Full cycle? 100%, of course.
How you get there is another matter. It can be a battery killing full discharge that will certainly ensure a brief life. Or a leisure set of discharges down to 20%, 30% or more. When they all sum up 100%, winner! You've got a cycle!!
Apple recommends you enjoy your Mac and don't obsess too much on battery stuff. Just exercise the electrons every so often by bringing it down to, say, 20% and charge it back up. Going all the way down to the bitter end, when the Mac forces itself to sleep is sort of ok too and won't do (too much) damage, provided you don't make it an engrained habit. We all forget the power brick occasionally and get caught out in the wild with whatever charge was left inside.

  • Brand new macbook pro keeper keeps freezing

    Hello,
I got a brand new macbook pro less than a week ago and already it is acting up. It keeps making these clicking sounds that seem to originate from the top right corner of the keyboard (where the power button is). Also, I'm constantly getting the spinning rainbow wheel, even though the only applications I have open are pages and safari. When the spinning wheel starts, I can't even access force quit. I tried rebooting my computer but things are still freezing (even now I'm getting the wheel every couple of words that I type). This is all very frustrating. I feel like this shouldn't be happening, especially based on how much I paid for this computer. I also tried running the 'verify disk permissions' in disk utility and it came up with a bunch of problems (I don't know if that's normal or not)
    Help?

Make an appointment online at the Genius Bar of your local Apple Store and take it in. They should be able to get you going.
