My broadband wi-fi is chewing up MBs big time and I don't know why!

Hi everyone Since yesterday for some unknown reason my 4G broadband wi-fi is chewing up MBs big time from my laptop and I really don't know why!  Even with the web browsers shut down, the broadband is chewing up at least 1MB per second and counting.  Maybe it's a malware problem?   I'm sure it's not a devious neighbour accessing the broadband because whenever I disconnect my laptop from the wi-fi, the wi-fi device stops chewing up MBs.  So it's something to do with my laptop.  I have a Sophos installed so I thought would have picked up any virus chewing up the MBs? Help anyone!

Has your laptop been downloading and updates? If you're using Windows, you can change the settings in control panel to stop it automatically downloading updates, you can choose which updates you want to install.
If Mac, I'm not knowledgable with Apple devices. I would recommend chatting with wireless Bigpond Tech Support on 13 39 33 "wireless"

  • Broadband usage has doubled and I don't know why

    Hi there
Just received a warning message that I am about to exceed my 40gb limit.  Normal monthly usage has been 18gb apparently and we don't know why the increase has occurred.  We have no kids at home, we don't stream films or videos or play games, I've downloaded 1 music album this month and we've surfed the net as usual.
    Can this usage be verified?
Any tips on checking whther someone else is using our broadband....is this possible?
Any tips on why this might be happening...it's puzzling.
Is there an indpependent (non BT) way of monitoring and measuring broadband usage?
    Dom

    Hi dr58.
In my experience the only way to sort this out is to hope that your post draws the attention of a forum moderator. Anyone on the phones will try and convince you that you are indeed downloading 20 albums a day, uploading 3000 pictures a week etc etc and "it all mounts up" and you would be far better on an Unlimited Package.
I had problems (in fact thinking about it, this time last year) where my usage had crept up and according to BT my son and I were using 90gb a month, despite no streaming, gaming etc. I am on a 40gb package like yourself so was incurring £50 charges each month. In the end it was resolved with BT agreeing it wasn't possible for us to be getting through that amount but as I wasn't using a BT router at the time it was impossible to prove that someone hadn't been piggybacking my wifi. (I'd changed passwords during the high readings to no avail anyway).
My personal advice would be to keep a daily eye on your broadband monitor, screenshot them if need be, if you have been out during the day or away for any great length of time also note the readings that appear for that day. I also check my BT homehub to make sure only the devices in my house are hooked in just in case.
As it happens I've also noticed a big jump in my readings this month, I have just a few GB to spare but in my opinion the readings are still high compared to what I was noting at the tail end of last year after I finally had SeanD look into the matter for me.
I do hope that the meters arent going up the creek yet again because I've sworn that if it should happen again I'm walking to a different company this time around.
Best of luck and I hope you get the information you need and the situation resolves itself.

  • Determining Totals - Time and or MBs

Relatively new to iTunes. I have a substantial library at this point and am burning cds based on created playlists. Some of the cds I am burning are audio and some mp3.
If I have a playlist that is too big (long) for an audio cd, is there a way I can randomly select from the playlist to mix and match till I have a selection that 'fits' on the audio cd based on minutes. I have the same question as it regards mp3's and MB's although it's much less an issue.
    Thank you.

KasperK - thanks for the options. Not yet familiar with smart playlists - I'll read up on them. I suppose just adding one at a time from my library and keeping an eye on the totals below is the method. You would (I would) think that software such as this would have a little more intuitive means of tracking build size and editing such be adding or deleting tracks. Something like an 'inspector' window. Ahhh, oh well, such is life.
ed2345 - ty for the clickable totals in the bottom bar - it does (will) help. Am well aware I need to base
Audio CDs on minutes (time) and Data CDs on size (MBs). Unfortunately as discussed, not being able to 'subtract' from the total is troublesome at best and a PITA at worst.
    Thank you both.

  • Broadband failed and no-one in BT knows why or how...

    Hi,
Basically as psrt of my job one of my benefits is free broadband.
I've recently moved into a new property and ordered a phone line to get this setup on.
I then proceeded to order the Broadband via the weblink provided by my company.
I was to be connected on the 5th of November and have been stuck on "in progress" since, no-one from BT contacted me, I had to chase on every occasion.
First few times I was told I'd be called back, which did not happen.
I then got word that it had failed, no reason why but i was promised a call back to set it up again, this of course did not happen.
I contacted again and finally got a CS rep that advised me that this is setup automatically and they do not have any ability to deal with this!?
I'm also paying for a BT phoneline I do not use other than to get broadband... broadband which I do not have.
Anyways, I'm tired of going around in circles over this and would very much appreciate it if someone could direct me to anyone that can help get this sorted for me.
    thanks.
    Kris.

  • I recently upgraded to mac os x lion. But now my broadband pen doesn't work. I'm portuguese and i use the vodafone network. Can anybody help me?

    Hello.
My name is Margarido and i'm portuguese. I use a mobile operator named zon to access the web using a broadband pen modem.
This operator uses the vodafone technical support (network) and since i upgraded to the Mac OS X Lion, the pen modem doesn´t work.
    Can anybody help me?
I eared that Mac OS X Lion doesn´t support pen modems yet. Is this true?
    Thank you.

Your best bet is to call the Vodafone technical support helpline. Since each manufacturer writes custom software for each OS. They might be working on new drivers...

  • TS3274 Not for sure if wireless broadband router is working I have downloaded Itunes on computer I don't think I can coonect to Wi-Fi; any suggestions

How would I know if my Wireless Broadband router is  working? I get a list oif Network to choose but then I am asked to put in IP address when not connected to the computer. If I am connected to the computer the computer I am assuming IP address shows but even though I have downloaded Ituned to the computer; I cannot retrieve Itunes or App Storeon the IPAD.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

  • Broadband times, and charges

What it is, i made 2 calls on my broadband phone one at, 18:57 where i am being charged, and 18:12, again where I am being charged. I thought if a call was made after 18:00 are free. I have made other calls normally after 19:00, and was not charged, at what time are the calls free. The package for my broadband talk, evening and weekends.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

wow  that long - how time flies

  • I downloaded 3.6 thre times and I cannot log on. I get unable to connect and problem loading page. Prior to downloading the latest update Firefox worked great. Once downloaded it stopped working. Explorer works fine and my broadband connection is good.

I cannot launch Firefox after latest update was loaded.

Problem Solved. Great work, thanks for the prompt and accurate response. This is one reason why I strongly recommend Firefox over Explorer!

  • Broadband doesn't work between the hours of 5 and ...

As the titles says really. Tiresome.
    Any ideas please.

As it is now after 9pm can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • Huawei E1752 mobile broadband. I don't know what to do ...

    Hello
I have a HuaWei E1752 that I'm trying to configure to use when I'm away from home. I'm not interested in using NetworkManager as I'm using a basic wpa_supplicant daemon in the background setup for my normal wireless networking. I've searched around quite a bit including listening to a man on youtube talking hungarian and using NetworkManager in Debian. I want to use the old fashioned programs like pppd, cu and wvdial
Currently, I do not have any ttyUSB* entries in /dev.  I've tried running usb_modeswitch with the appliable addresses but it don't have any further affect. I've even tried installing (as root(!)) this lame chinese java program that is avalable on the net for this modem, and even that program complains about not being able to recognize any usable modems.
    What am I to do?

  • Broadband almost going backwards

I have been a customer with bt since the 8th August so not long at all. I had major problems with my account right from the word go and was reduced to tears until after a total of around six hours on the phone trying to get help, one person sorted my problem within minutes.
I have noticed that my connection keeps dropping out in the past few days and my speeds have seemed slow. Tonight, my speed has virtually ground to a halt and alot of sites will not load as it's taking so long.
I ran four speed tests using speediest.net app on my iPad and the maximum speed is about 0.18mbps. I am unable to do the bt speediest as the page just won't load, the connection just grinds to a halt.
I really don't know if I can face phoning bt again as last time I was reduced to tears big time. I don't know what to do. I really would like to cancel my service with them as it's been so problematic and I cannot cope with their call centres.
I'm going to try and get through to their head office tomorrow to see if I can get some agreement to terminate because I can't use the Internet properly at all.
Sorry for the rant, am just extremely fed up with such poor service from such a big company.

The reason for your disconnects is your Noise margin.  Its very low at 3dB.  This could be because it is the evening when the Noise Margin drops due to the amount of people online.. Do you know whether it is higher or not during the day?
Also can you tell me which type of master socket you have? and whether you're connected at it?
Edit as jcampy has advised the internal wiring, as standard, the bell wire should be taken out of any master or extension socket as this can reduce the amount of interference your broadband can pick up and sometimes fixes the problem, see how to remove it here http://bit.ly/4LEKJg
Also try a tidy up of your cable as per this users (RogerB) post : http://community.bt.com/t5/BB-Speed-Connection-Issues/Poor-Broadband-speed/m-p/14217
To rule out internal wiring if you have the first or second picture of the sockets then you need to unscrew the faceplate and plug into the test socket as shown on this diagram

  • Is Fios compatible with Windows 7 64-Bit?

I would like to know if Verizon FIOS is compatible with windows 7 64-bit because I've seen some topics on the internet where there are problems with it. If you need more info about the computer, please let me know, but keep in mind that my computer has pretty decent specs. (corei7 processor, Gigs of ram, ATI Radeon 5770, etc )
Thanks for any help you can give me.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

To expand on the first reply, I do have FiOS TV and internet, and there is absolutely no need to install any Verizon software on your computer to use the service. I do not currently have any installed on my Windows 7 64-bit system that I am typing this on right now, have been using this laptop since Oct 22, 2009 with Windows 7 on FiOS, works fine.
And if you do decide you want to install some Verizon software, my experience is that some probably will work, some probably will not. For example, the Verizon Call Assistant (VCA) client didn't work worth a *&^%#@, at least for me, but I don't need it as I have a very reliable Caller ID on TV setup and if I really need to access VCA I can use the website anyway. (and FWIW, that client didn't work correctly on Windows XP either!). I tried the PC-based In-Home Agent client, sort of seemed to work, but since I didn't have any problems or issues that needed to be fixed I deleted it.
Unless you really need a specific Verizon program, don't worry about it.
And just for completeness, I have not yet found any sofware, fee or free, from anybody, that won't work with FiOS, be it email (Windows Live Mail), browser (IE, Firefox, Safari, or Chrome), Avast anti-virus, etc, etc, etc. Of course I am sure that there is at least one program out there that won't work, but so far I have not found it
Edit: just saw your reply. I pay for 25 mbs down, 15 mbs up service, and I typically get 24+ down and 23+ up, wired or wireless, from multiple speed test sites, no tuning of Windows 7 on my part. It just works for me; some people do seem to have performance and/or connectivity issues, l don't and I don't know why they do. But one thing I will warn you about is that if you have a cordless phone (2.4 GHz) and you decide to use wireless, you may experience some connectivity problems when using the wireless connection, if you do try changing the channel number in the router to 1, 6, or 11.
    Hope this helps.

  • You tube viewing

My you tube viewing is very slow all of the sudden and I don't know why what can I do?

    Joseph,
If I understand correctly, the problem you are encountering occurs while streaming video, not downloading it.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streaming_media
When streaming video, music, or other media, you are consuming this media while it is being delivered.  If you are consuming faster than it can be delivered, the media will stop and buffer.  This seems to be the starting and stopping that you are describing.
    jfa95 wrote:
Usually get 5 to 7 seconds of viewing then file stops, reloads, then another 5 to 7 seconds and on and on.
If this is true, you are most likely experiencing the limits of your Mifi Card's bandwidth.  According to one site, the Mifi bandwidth is between 1.3 and 1.6 Mbs (Megabits Per Second).  http://policyblog.verizon.com/BlogPost/634/MiFisWirelessquotTetheringquotInvites AlltoVZs3G.aspx
Streaming movies can require bandwidths of up to 2.5 Mbs and High Definition content can take up to 10.
Youtube recently made 480p the default setting for most videos, which could be one reason why you are experiencing this issue.
The best thing that you can do while using the Mifi card is to either watch lower resolution youtube videos and movies, or pause them and allow them to buffer before viewing them.  For an optimal viewing experience, use WiFi as much as possible.

  • After Effects CS 4 problem

Hello everyone. When i wanna look to a project the image moves too slow (0.2 frames /sec) and i don't know why.I looked to program requirements and it's necessary :
    Intel® Pentium® 4 or AMD Athlon® 64 processor (Intel Core™2 Duo or AMD Phenom® II recommended); 64-bit support required
64-bit operating system required: Microsoft® Windows Vista® Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise with Service Pack 1 or Windows® 7
    2 GB of RAM
3 GB of available hard-disk space plus 2 GB of space for optional content; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on removable flash-based storage devices)
    1280 x 1024 display with OpenGL 2.0–compatible video card
    DVD-ROM drive
QuickTime 7.6.2 software required for QuickTime features
Broadband Internet connection required for online services*
and i meet all the requirements. So,if anyone can help me,i'm waiting for any advices. Thank you.

I don't understand what you're saying the problem is.
It would help if you explained your problem in more detail. It may also be that you're new to After Effects and don't know the terminology to describe your problem. In that case, I recommend that you work your way through the basic learning materials for After Effects.
