My calendars were erased today

I have not upgraded to Lion. When I opened up my iCal this morning AFTER I synced my iPad all the calendars were gone. I had about 7 calendars, months of appointments, critical accounts to keep up with, etc.
Can I get any of this back? I still have the calendars on my iPhone, but if I sync it, I fear I will erase the calendars on the iPhone as well.

Sorry to hear about the lost data.
#1 You need a backup (unless you already have one in which case let us know and this process will be simpler).
Anyone who cares about their data on any computer running any operating system (Mac, Windows, Linux, Unix, Hamster in a wheel, etc.) needs a regular backup.

I encourage you to take steps to protect data you deem important.
#2 Try refreshing iCal to see if the events re-appear.
First make an iCal backup, File > Export > Archive.
Remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.ical
Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.ical (There may be more than one of these. Remove them all.)
__NOTE: Removing these files will remove any shared (CalDAV) calendars you may have access to. You will have to re-add those calendars to iCal > Preferences > Accounts.
If that doesn't bring the events back, keep reading:
#3 If the iPhone is the only place where the data exists, proceed with caution.
__Create a new user account on the Mac: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8235.html
__Sync the iPhone in the new user and merge all data (not replace)
__Launch iCal in the new user -- If the calendar database on the iPhone is intact you should see all the calendars here in iCal
__Go to File > Export > iCal Archive and save the file to desktop
__Take the resulting ICBU file and put it in Macintosh HD > Users > Shared
__Log into the main user account
__Go to Macintosh HD > Users > Shared and drag the ICBU file to the desktop
__Double-click the file and it will restore all the calendars into iCal

After 47 minutes onthe phone with Apple Technical Support, here's what we did to get my contacts back on my phone. It would be a good idea to back up your Outlook before you start to be safe.
First you open Outlook, click on File, Export, click on the option "Contacts to a list (tab delimited text)" then save it on your Desktop. Next open your Mac Address Book (may have to find it in Applications through Finder). Click on File, Import, find your file you just created from Outlook on your Desktop and double click on it. You should see an example of what your data will look like on the left of the box. Then click "OK". All of your contact information from Outlook should be imported to your Address Book.
Then open iTunes again with your phone connected to your computer and attempt to sync again. Hope this helps. It was a pain to get to this point but at least I have my contacts backon my phone!

My ipod was sst up/registered using my mac computer. Unfortunately, it was plugged into a pc and all my songs, pics, etc were erased. Now when i plug it into my mac to sync it, my ipod doesn't even show up in the source list. I can't restore it. Any ideas

When I plugged my ipod into my mac to sync it again, it wouldn't even appear in the source list. I can't even click on it to restore it. It's simply not there. Any ideas on how I can get it to appear in my source list and sync it again using my mac? Suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I just updated to IOS 5, when I did this my Songs were erased. I thought sinced i "Backed - Up" my ipod that my songs would return after the update. WHere are my songs? Whats the purpose of a back-up if i cant get my tunes back? I have about 2000 songs.

The backup does not contain music or the apps themselves and some other things. Those need to be in your iTunes library so then can be synced to the iPod during a latter stage of the update process.
If you are in a country where iCloud has be implimentd then you can redownload music by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
It list s the countrys where there is iCloud.
If the music wee from CDs, you have to go back to the source.

Calendar keeps erasing my alerts

Recently, whenever I add an alert to a calendar event, be it 1 day or 30 days out, the calendar promptly erase that reminder. I open up the even a minute later and the alert is gone. Sometimes I get a flash of it before it vanishes. For events that already have alerts, I cannot modify them. I make the change, but upon reopening the event details, they've been reset.
Anyone else having this issue? Better yet, a fix?

Unlinking my phone from the account didn't help, but removing the account from my Macbook Air and then adding it again using the manual CalDav settings got everything working again.
Edit: Okay, the fix isn't sticking. It worked until I closed the calendar app and opened it again. Upon starting it up, the behavior has returned to erasing my alerts...

What Kilted said. If your photos or contacts were synced from another computer, get them there. Or if they have become unchecked in iTunes, re-check them and then sync. I had different things synced from two computers, and I think something like this happened to me. Anyway, now I will sync by wifi so probably won't have this worry any more.

When restoring an iPhone with iTunes, the iPhone is completely erased. The first step is updating the iPhone's backup with a prompt to update the backup or skip the update. Contacts are included with the backup but so is a significant amount of other data. Sounds like there is a problem with the backup in regards to the contact info.
Not a good idea to depend on an iPhone or any cell phone alone for such important data which can be lost or stolen. Contacts are designed to be synced with a supported address book app on your computer and there are a number of free email accounts that support syncing contacts over the air. Apple's iCloud account is one, Gmail, Yahoo, and Hotmail are others.

Sync them back to the device from the supported application on the computer that you are using. That would be either Address Book, Windows Contacts, Outlook, iCloud or other cloud service. That is done either through iTunes, or iCloud.
