My camera is frozen, shutter won't respond. Any idea?

Camera on my iPhone is frozen, the shutter won't respond. Any idea?

iPhone 4, iOS 5.0.1
I've been an iOS app developer since 2008 and a mac developer before that.  It's not a memory issue, nor a crash (no crash files).
It's doesn't matter how many apps are running. could be 25 apps or just the camera.   Rebooting, hard resets and iOS restores have not fixed the issue.  Nor has turning on and off location services.
If I am on WiFi the camrea shutter will not open.   Close the app (as in really closing the app), go into settings and switch off WiFi and all is good.
I was just suggesting that may be something you want to try as it's my particular problem.

My screen is frozen, it won't allow any action such as " slide to unlock. When double tapped, a screen with "enter passcode" appears but passcode cannot be entered.

That is very unfortunate. When you connect it to your computer, will it sync with iTunes?
If your iPad will sync with iTunes, I suggest that you backup your iPad with iTunes, then proceed to do a software restore. To do a software restore, plug your device into your computer, click on your device in iTunes, then under the general device information (a picture of the device with the name, etc) is a button that says 'restore'. This will wipe all of the software off of your device (as well as all your apps and files, which is why you backed them up), including, more than likely, the software issue with not accepting user input.
If that does not work, power the device down into DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode. Here are the steps for putting your device into DFU mode:
1.) Plug your device into your computer
2.) Hold the power and home button down for 10 seconds
3.) After ten seconds, let go of the power button but continue holding the home button.
4.) Stop holding the home button once iTunes recognizes the device as being in 'recovery mode' (really DFU mode in this case).
If still that does not work, it is most likely not a software issue, but a hardware issue. The way the iPad 'touch screen' (truly a digitizer) works is that you are not really touching the screen (LCD) of your device, but instead a front plate (the digitizer) which detects touches, interprets them, and tells the CPU of the iPad where touches occured, so that the iPad can then calculate what was at that location, etc.
The way it transfers this information is that it has a small cable leading from one corner of the digitizer to a port on the inside of the iPad, the same way the iPhone, iPod Nano (multi-touch version) or iPod Touch works. Opening the iPad to check for this cable can cause damage to the digitizer, damage to the internal components to the iPad, and will certainly void your warranty. If none of the software restores do the job, I would suggest taking it to your nearest Apple Store (or sending it to Apple if you do not live near an Apple Store) to have the hardware digitizer component replaced.

  • My ipad(2) is plugged into my pc but won't charge-any ideas?

    my ipad2 is plugged in but won't charge-any ideas--only 2 weeks old

Your PCs USB port is probably not capable of providing enough power to charge your iPad. It might be charging at a very slow rate and when your iPad is in sleep mode. Use the adapter provided with your iPad.

  • My ipad has a black screen and won't start, any ideas?

My Ipad 1 has a black screen and won't start, any ideas?  It is charged.

If Paul's advice doesn't work try this.
Hold down on the sleep button AND the home button at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons and let the iPad restart.
BTW ...In order to start up under normal circumstances you only need to hold down on the sleep button for a couple of seconds or so until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

    Hello AdeShaw,
You may need to restart the computer, if you haven't done so already. Should that fail to resolve the issue, we've an article that can help resume the download.

I just upgraded to the new 5.0.1 software and now my Ipad won't sync, any ideas?

Are you using ITunes 10.5? If so have you upgraded to the OS 5 software? Now it should tell you there's an even newer upgrade to the 5.0.1 when you try to sync your iPhone or iPad.  Hope this helps.

    Hey harikrishnandhk,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are having issue with your iPhone 3GS. You are definitely taking the correct steps, as you'll want to restore the iPhone in recovery mode. For information on doing so, see this article:
iOS: Unable to update or restore
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • HT4061 My IPAD has frozen and won't respond to any commands

My Ipad has frozen on me and I can't get it to respond.

Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider if it appears), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • My iPhone cannot connect to iTunes. It says I need to update to 11.0.5 to use iTunes with my iOS 7 iphone 5 but still won't work, any ideas?

I just downloaded and updated to the new iOS 7 software today for it's release. But when I plug my phone into my usb and then into my macbook, it won't work on iTunes. It says it's not compatible and I need to update to the latest iTunes which they say is 11.0.5. When I go online and download the iTunes installer and download the new update, it works out fine and I don't seem to have any trouble with it but as soon as it opens iTunes when the installer finishs, the mesage about compatibility comes up again even though I just updated to 11.0.5. If anyone has any idea, let me know! I'm hoping that maybe it's just a glitch with the new iTunes that needs to be fixed up?

    Hello Apple_Addict22,
Thank you for your question. iOS 7 requires iTunes 11.1.  First, I recommend trying to obtain the update by going to the iTunes menu and selecting Check for Updates.

If you continue to get the message that iTunes is up to date, you can download the latest version of iTunes here:

Once the file downloads, double click on the installation file that downloaded to initiate the installation.

  • Mail.app using 80% CPU and won't quit - any ideas?

Hi, I'll try and cut a short story shorter...
I tried to begin using Mail.app last night instead of Entourage and Thunderbird just to see what it was like. Having never used mail.app before, I use the bundled import wizard to retrieve the settings from the Entourage account (POP, wifes ISP account) which seemed to work ok. I didn't test at this point as I have another account (POP again, my gMail) stored on Thunderbird which I also wanted to import.
To import the mailboxs from Thunderbird I copied the relevant folders from the ~\Library...\myprofile\... folder to the desktop and added the .mbox extension. Then used the import wizard 'other' option to bring them in.
All seemed to go ok. I recreated my 'other' account manually and sent/received some test mails etc. then marked everyting in all mailboxes as read.
At this point the laptop went very slow so I checked Activity Viewer - this showed Mail.app hovering between 70% - 80%. I thought this was a bit odd so I tried to Quit Mail, but it just hung. I then force quit and the CPU calms down.
I opened Mail again and it was ok for about 3 minutes until I try to view various mailboxes. Mail is still responsive but the mailboxes are empty! I use the rebuild function and they show the messages again, unless I look at a different one and then go back to the rebuilt mailbox - it's empty again.
Then the CPU/won't quit happened again. CPU is up at the same levels, Mail.app has 7 threads. I thought there may be some indexing going on so I went to bed. I got up this morning to find the G4 fans going crazy and CPU still consuming the CPU?
    Any ideas?
I'm thinking I may trash both accounts and rebuild from scratch tonight.

    Hi Ian.
Aside from whatever the problem is here (which I don't really know), you shouldn't add an .mbox extension to mbox files in order to import them into Mail. Mail uses that extension for something else. Also, you'd get better results using Eudora Mailbox Cleaner to do the conversion.

Even though other devices are connected to wifi, it still could be that you are not connected. Is the wifi icon at the top of the display illuminated.

Try deleting the song and redownloading it if you are in a country (USA is one) that allows free redownloads by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
