My Canon EFS 55-250m 4-5.6 is blured the 135 setting

This is a relatively unused and new lens (2-3 years old) on my Canon Rebel T2i. Never been damaged. It will produce shape photos until about the 100mm to135mm range settings. Not above that and at 250mm it is a disaster.
I have tried to test for this problem by shooting using a tripod and 200 ASR, f8 setting with a 2 second and then 30 second timer. However, it remains fuzy. I have tried various subjects (backlight, full sun, shade, etc) all on a tripod with the same results. I have also tried to change the f stop to the extremes and the shoot time as well, all to no avail. Ditto for 400, 800, 1600 exposure settings
I have also tired the same routine as oultined above with the stablizer off and with manual focusing, but the problem persists.
I have not tried to lock the mirror but the lens should produce acceptable photos on a tripod at 150mm I have been told
So I am wondering if it is a defective lens or if this lens abover 135mm is useless.
Any comments welcome
Cheers

I thought of the manual focus issue but I can't rationalize that with the auto focus issues.
It would be best to select the broadest AF setting. All points active.
Your comment about aperture is confusing. As the numbers get bigger the size of the lens opening gets smaller. But your camera acquires focus in the largest aperture available to it. Your lens varies from an f4 on short end and f5.6 on the long end. The fact that your lens works properly on the short end where the widest aperture is f4 but not on the long end where the widest aperture is f5.6 suggests that either the camera can't acquire focus (set to use the center point and is unable to acquire a horizontal image point onto which to focus or the lens isn't opening to its fullest aperture above 135mm. (If this were the case, the viewfinder might appear unusually dim, shots at f5.6 wouldn't be properly exposed, ... )
The ISO shouldn't make a great deal of difference to whether the lens focuses or not. But in low light situations, your camera may not be able to acquire focus. Cranking up the ISO won't change the camera's ability to capture focus.
What you're photographing also makes a difference for focusing. There has to be sufficient contrast but that usually isn't a problem so I hope you don't take offense that I mentioned it.
Another thought... the comment regarding its age and condition made me think that it may be suffering some sort of dried up lubricant or other issue related to storage and lack of use. Some things just work better if they're used with some frequency, even light frequency, than if they sit unused.
A final thought is that the lens may be suffering from some sort of mold or contaminant. Mold can grow under certain hot and humid conditions and I've read that expensive lenses are often protected in climate controled cases. Certainly a unlikely issue but I don't know your location.

  • I have the Canon Rebel EOS T3i and was wondering what is the best setting to take firework pictures.

How can I get great pics of fireworks with my Canon EOS T3i??

For this kind of photography, it is essential to have no movement of the camera at all.  Here are the settings that have worked for me:
    1. Tripod - this is an absolute must for any kind of night photography, including fireworks.
    2. Cable release - since you can move the camera just by pressing the shutter release, you have to activate the shutter without touching the camera.  You can do this either with a cable release or with an infrared trigger.  Be sure to get the correct cable or remote for your camera since they differ from one model to another.
    3. Use manual mode and activate Live View whenever possible.  The flipping of the mirror within the camera can also generate movement, so Live View is very helpful.
    4. Use an aperture of f/8-f/11.
    5. Use ISO 100.
    6. Focus at infinity - you can manually zoom during the exposure for an interesting effect.
    7. 4 second exposure to start and adjust up or down based on your results.
    8. You will likely need a wide focal length such as 35mm to start, and then adjust as necessary if you have a zoom lens.
    9. Other possible adjustments - set the White Balance to 5300K; set the exposure compensation to -1.0 EV. This is a full 1-stop underexposure to keep the firework highlights from burning out.
I haven't posted photos to this forum before, but if this works, here's an example of what I mean.  This was shot last summer with a Canon 60D, 4 second exposure at f/11, ISO 100, 32mm.

  • I am trying to download pictures from my canon rebel  eos to my Ipad but i get the message "this device is not supported" what can I do ?

I just bought an Apple Lighting to USB Camera Adapter. When I got home to and connected it to my Canon Rebel EOS Digital Camera. I received the error message "This device is not supported" I was wondering if there is any software or drivers I need to download?
    Thanks
    Don

I use Canon Cameras and have no problems downloading photos from the camera to the Lightning to USB Camera Adapter. My questions and suggestions might be basic but just to make sure:
    1. This is an iPad forum area. Are you using the lightning to USB camera adapter with an iPad? Your info in your original post says iPod. I'm not sure that the adapter works with an iPod.
    2. After you connect the adapter to your iPad and then use a USB cable to connect the adapter to the camera did you turn on the camera?
    3. If you did turn on the camera and still did not get the import of photos to start try a reset your iPad. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. This will not cause any data loss.

  • My new MAC 10.10.3 will not recognize my Canon cameras or my Kodak camera.  Help from the Geek Squad was useless.

My iMAC 10.10.3 Yosemite will not recognize any of my two Canon cameras or my Kodak camera.  What's the solution?

Can you temporarily connect some other USB device to verify that your PowerBook's USB ports are in working order? Do you have another computer to which your camera can be connected to verify that a working USB connection is being made from the camera?
If we can somehow eliminate a hardware issue, then you can focus on software. Have you tried creating a new admin user account? If the new account recognizes your camera, it would narrow the problem down to something within your regular user account.

I've tried changing USB ports, switching the camera on and off, trying a different USB cord, tried a different camera, but nothing. Please help! This problem only started a few days ago on lightroom 3.6, upgraded to 5.5, but still not working. Thanks.

Can you see the Canon EOS camera and image files using Windows Explorer? If not disconnect the camera, close all applications' shutdown Windows, and TURN OFF the power to your system and ALL connected devices. Disconnect all phones, iPads, and any other USB devices and restart your system.
Retry Windows Explorer and see if your camera is showing. If so try LR import again.

  • I have done a course in photography with my canon eos 1000D and have taught me to handle the raw camera

I have done a course in photography with my canon eos 1000D and have taught me to handle the raw camera , but not to install and funciione with .cr2 photos. I downloaded the trial version of photoshop cs2 and installed the latest camera raw ( 8.7) and even so will not let me open it. I tried to update photoshop with updates and has not served .

Unfortunately your software pre-dates the camera. But it is possible to download and install the free DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of Photoshop. DNG is just like CR2 with no loss of quality. (keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Windows download (.exe file) click here DNG Converter 8.7.1
Mac download (.dmg file) click here DNG Converter 8.7.1
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

HELP! I just downloaded pics from my Canon 7D to i photo. I was near the end of editing and the computer froze (started spinning). I forced a restart and went I got back to iPhoto all my work was gone. Any suggestions?

a best practice to is to never have any computer program (including iPhoto) delete the photos from the card but to import the photos and keep them and then after at least one successful backup cycle has completed and then reformat the card --  I use three very large (32 GB) cards in rotation so I do not reformat for typically a year or more giving me one more long term backup of my photos
Try Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database

  • Canon Vixia HF R20 - How do I turn off the date display?

How do I turn off the date display on my Canon Vixia HF R20? I do not want the date on my videos. I searched the manual and googled it and can't find an answer.

    Hello DaisyKary,
When shooting with the VIXIA HF R20 you would be able to turn off most of the displays by pressing the [DISP. Batt. Info] button through a cycle.  It will change what is displayed on the camcorder's LCD panel.
If this is an urgent technical support matter I would urge you to contact Canon technical support directly for further assistance.

  • New Canon drivers available on UK site, but not in the US site?

Just got a new MP970, and was looking for downloadable drivers on the US site, and found nothing. But heading to the UK site I found the MP Navigator, drivers for the MP970 and more. I'm not sure why but if anyone needs Canon drivers, check out the UK site.

Canon USA is notorious for poor customer support in the area of drivers, especially for the Mac. I have owned a Canon iPF5000 for just about a year now and have found it necessary to get my drivers from Canon Europe, Canon Canada and Canon Japan.

  • I want to use my jetpack 890L as a wireless router to allow wireless printing with a canon laser printer. Is this possible, and does the jetpack support WPS?

I want to use my jetpack 890L as a wireless router to enable wireless printing with a canon laser printer. Is this possible, and does the jetpack support WPS?

I’ve used several wireless printers with a 4510 and 5510 Jetpack and they all print just fine. The MHS890L does not support WPS. The WPS Wikipedia article briefly addresses the reason why you should not use WPS.  If you’re having trouble setting up your printer the manufacturer has a toll free support line to help you. Your Jetpack has the Wi-Fi Password on the bottom, under the battery, and or in the LED display.

  • My Canon MX922 printer has stopped printing because it says the paper tray is empty. Tray is full.

My Canon MX922 printer has all of a sudden stopped printing and I'm getting the error message that the paper tray is empty. The tray is full. I've removed and replaced several times. I've loaded the top feeder as well in case for some reason it was trying to pull from there. I've shut down and restarted several times as well, to no avail. I work from home and this is my own business so it's vital I have a working printer. Any suggestions as to what the problem is or is the printer shot? I've probably had it just over a year.

    Hi nicolej31,
You will want to ensure that there aren't any obstructions in the paper feed path that may be causing the paper not to feed and be recognized by the printer.  With a flashlight or other bright light, please check the paper feed areas of the printer to ensure no obstructions exist.  Once this has been done, please perform a roller cleaning on the unit by following the steps located here.
You will also want to ensure that the paper type and size selected in the printer driver is applicable to the cassette tray that you are trying to print from.  For information on which paper sizes and types to load in each cassette tray, please click here.
    Hope this helps!
