My cd drive kicks out disks

Does anyone know how to stop my cd drive from kicking out disks?

A popular optical drive upgrade just now is the Pioneer 111D available from many online suppliers - for example

Upgrading the optical drive is a job you could probably tackle yourself - a bit fiddly, but not difficult - the Apple Official D-I-Y instructions are here
http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/g5/073-0807.pdf
I installed the very similar 110D in this ancient and venerable G5 DP 2 and it works like a charm. Couple of things to watch out for on the installation - mentioned here

  • Combo drive spits out disks! Ptoooey!

    I too am having an issue with my drive. No CD or DVD will mount. It does not matter if it is a blank disk, music or data CD. I will put in a disk (many different brands/speeds tested) and the Mac thinks for a few seconds, then just spits it out. I have read through a bunch of the threads here dealing with the same or similar problems. I am starting to think that one of those updates I downloaded from Apple screwed something up. This was not happening before the last updates were released...
    I did not see a fix for this in any of the threads.
    Hey, Apple! There's obviously a problem with the eMac. How about fixing it?! >:(

    I don't have any kids, and I don't stick anything in my superdrive except discs, but I have the exact same problem. Just got an American Gangster DVD from Netflix, and the macbook sounds like it's trying to read it 3 times, then ejects it. This happens with lots of different discs I get. I called Apple support, and they had me press a combination of keys, reboot, etc. That's a lot harder than playing the disc on my girlfriend's Windows laptop, which plays any disc I put into it -- even if it looks like someone placed it on concrete and then danced on top of it. Apple superdrive, you are junk. Why did I pay so much for this thing when a Windows laptop is $600?

  • Dvd driver kicks out dvd media -

    Please help me.
    I have a iMac in my home and Power MacG5 in the office.
    I need to get some video editing files to bring in office.
    If I take a data dvds of the editing files from my home to my working place, dvd driver just bring them out of dvd driver.
    No messages!
    I wonder if anybody can help me.

    The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico, Spanish is my native tongue. I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
    The Superdrives are crappy. My mini has had two in less than three years. Thankfully under warranty. Anything can send one over the edge, even an OS upgrade. However, an external USB drive may be cheaper than the internal if you are paying out-of-pocket.

  • Why does my dvd drive spit out disk

    I'm trying to burn a video  and when I insert a blank dvd-r it sounds like it's reading it and then spits it out.

    Hi s,
    Mac SuperDrives are very picky about what they'll eat. Try a different brand of DVD. I've never had a coaster or a problem with gold colored Maxells. You can also try cleaning the drive.
    You could purchase a CD/DVD drive cleaning kit, or you can try with materials you may already have on hand. Use a credit card, or something similar, and wrap it with an LCD cleaning cloth type product (basically a thin micro-fiber type cloth). Gently slide the "cleaner" in and out a few times in the left side of the optical drive opening. Make sure you can hold onto the cloth so it doesn't get stuck inside the drive. This cleans the lens, which may be all you need.

  • Disk Drive spits out disks

    I've had my iMac for about 2 years now and yesterday when I tried to stick a burned DVD in, it wouldn't go in. First it felt like something was stopping it, then when I tried again, it took it but spit it out again. I even tried feeling around with a stiff piece of paper but could feel nothing inside. I've even tried other disks to see if it was just having a problem with burned DVD's. It just won't accept anything. Any ideas?

  • What is wrong? reboot/install disk kicks out at restart/reboot of Mac

    Can't figure out the problem, one day login worked fine and the next day blue screen stall (URGHHHH).. I've been troubleshooting all day starting off for the reason my iMac boots to the point of the blue screen and stalls and moveable cursor shows (the safemood works fine). I have been through all forums and Apple support and have tried everything and I mean everything to the point I am just ready to reinstall the system; BUT my disk kicks out at computer startup which makes the reinstall possible. Is there anyone that can tell me why my disk kicks out at the point of the grey screen with the apple and the spinner appears

    Has this disk worked all right in the past?
    Are there any bad scratches on the DVD that you can see?
    How old is your iMac? I ask because sometimes old optical drives, treat disks erratically.
    Supposing this hardware is OK. If you look at this page (linked below), you'll see various things that occur in safeboot which proves it is doing (or not doing) some things that are preventing you from starting normally.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
    Have you installed extra fonts recently, or new software that may have added itself to the numerous startup item locations scattered around your Mac?
    It can get rather technical I know.
    If you do not have an external bootable backup, you could try using
    FireWire target disk mode if you have another Mac around, and using it and your Install DVD, reinstall your OS that way.
    Essentially it entails putting your DVD in the other Mac, and selecting your troublesome machine's HD for the reinstall.
    Not a solution, but perhaps a next step, spares Macs permitting.

  • I'm trying to install OEM SR 2.1: Windows 95B in Qemu...  How do I figure out which brand of CD-ROM drive Qemu emulates since I have three different drive specific boot disks...?

    I'm trying to install OEM SR 2.1: Windows 95B in Qemu...  How do I figure out which brand of CD-ROM drive Qemu emulates since I have three different drive specific boot disks...?

    Not exactly...; all MS produced Win9X/ME install CDs are ISO-9660 & maybe even Joliet too...  The really confusing part is that not all Windows 98 SE full install CDs are even bootable in the first place (they tend to only ship one if the PC is capable of booting directly from its optical drive...; the vast majority of PCs have to use the chain loading method due to buggy, poorly written, outdated BIOSes...; etc.).  OEM SR 2.1/Windows 95B is really quite special & innovative for its time in that it was the first Service Release of Windows 95 to support larger HDs via FAT32 which back then was still brand new: i.e.: exciting technology & it still has proven to be quite useful & versatile since most flash memory storage devices come pre-formatted FAT32.
    There's also a hidden X:\Usbsupp folder on the CD that contains the MS USB 1.1 supplement patches/upgrader: a common mis-nomer is that you don't need to install it unless your PC has USB 1.1 ports.  Even without USB 1.1 ports the upgrades to C:\Windows\system make it a lot less buggy, more secure & stable.  For anyone else that enjoys emulating OEM SR 2.1 there's also a great unofficial SP 1 for it which has so many useful patches in it I'm considering integrating it into all of my install CDs...
    Unfortunately I've found that getting it to run decently requires tracking down a bevy of essential but according to MS's not releasing them in patch form optional DLL upgrades...  I guess not all machines are that unreliable but better to have them...; just in case you encounter a PC with a buggy BIOS that has hardware coniptions and/or ACPI/APM bugs.

  • My computer is running loudly and then kicks out when i insert a disk.

    There is something wrong with my computer. It cannot run the disk. Each time when i insert a disk, it is running loudly but 45 seconds later, it kicks out. I am sure the disk has no problem. http://www.bidanswer.com/Questions/QuestionInfo_10434.html

    This is not remotely a photography question.
    You need to search for the site of your computer's manufacturer.

    FWIW, I've had malfunctioning optical drives that could play video DVDs, but not read installation DVDs…or able to read install disks for Apple apps, but not third party apps.
    the disc version (Final Cut Studio Pro7) that was sold as a box set with everything included (motion/color and so on) is not realy supported by the newer Apple's as you now have to buy Final Cut X Online, download and pay for everything seprately.
    It's true that Apple stopped supporting Final Cut Studio applications, but I don't know any reason why they shouldn't install and function with newer OS versions and Macs (as long as a working DVD drive can be connected).

  • Ibook kicks out tiger install cd

    I just got an older g3 ibook and want to install Tiger on it. The ibook keeps kicking the disk out of the drive....I think it's because my ibook doesn't have a superdrive to read dvd's and my Tiger software is on a dvd. Does anyone know a way around this dilema without having to buy a cd version of Tiger or buying a superdrive?
    thanks for any help you can give
    ibook g3   Mac OS 9.2.x

    Hi,
    well, I'm afraid you may be asking too much of your iBook. The first thing I would do is check the Tiger requirements and make sure that your iBook can do it.
    Second, yes, there is a way around it.
    You'll have to find someone who has a computer with a DVD drive, mount your computer in Target mode onto his or hers and use that computer to install Tiger. Now, it has been a while and I cannot remember if you can start in Target mode with OS9. You may have to install an earlier version of OSX (from a CD), to allow you then to start in Target mode.

  • Error message when saving to a:\ drive when no disk present

    I am using a Jfilechooser andsaving images using ImageIO, but I want add in the code necessary to display an error message when the user tries to save to the a:\ drive but there is no disk present. How would I do this, this is the code so far:
    JFileChooser chooser = new JFileChooser();
    chooser.setApproveButtonMnemonic('a');
    chooser.setApproveButtonText("Save");
    // create a file chooser with save dialog
    int returnVal = chooser.showSaveDialog(c);
    // If the user selects ok
    if (returnVal == JFileChooser.APPROVE_OPTION) {
    // Get the file the user selected
    File file = chooser.getSelectedFile();
    / Get the name of the selected file
    String name = file.getName();
         // Set the format name to null
    String formatName = null;
    // Get the index number of when the . occurs in the file name
    int dot = name.indexOf(".");
         try {
         if(dot == -1) {
         file = new File(file.getParentFile(),
    name + "." + defaultExtension);
         formatName = defaultExtension;
         else {
    // else get the format name using a substring.
         formatName = name.substring(dot+1);
         // If the image cannot be saved, display an error message.
         if(!ImageIO.write(bi, formatName, file)) {
         file.delete();
         JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(c,
         "The image could not be saved. Please ensure that the extension is .jpg or .png",
         "Image save failed",
         JOptionPane.ERROR_MESSAGE);
         else {          // The image can be saved, so display a confirmation message
         JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(c,
         "The image has been saved to:\n"+
         file.getPath(),
         "Image Saved",
         JOptionPane.INFORMATION_MESSAGE);
         catch(IOException e) {               // Display an error message if save fails.
         JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(c,
         "The image could not be saved, no space on disk!!\n" + e,
         "Image save failure",
         JOptionPane.ERROR_MESSAGE);

    Again I have tried this, but in my program if I try to save to the a drive when no disk is inserted, the JOptionPane i want to display is not coming up.
    the system prints out
    java.io.FileNotFoundException: A:\image.jpg <The device is not ready>
    If that makes any sense to you

  • "attempting to copy to [external drive] failed. the disk could not be read"

    this is a problem on my 2x3GHz quad-core intel xeon macPro running os 10.5.7, and itunes 8.2. i have a 1TB external hard drive (firewire 800) that holds all my music for itunes. i have never had any problem with this setup before, until recently.
    once, a while back i got an error on my itunes (that popped up without me doing anything.. seemingly random) saying something about not being able to save the itunes library. that went away after a restart, and hasn't returned.
    BUT a new problem now happens any time i try to add more music to my itunes library. i have always added music to itunes by setting up my preferences "add file to library" and have the itunes library pointing to my external hard drive. then by dragging the files on-top of a playlist, it sorts and adds the files to my external hard drive. i have been using this process for years without any glitches.
    now when i try to drag files into itunes, i get: "attempting to copy to [external drive] failed. the disk could not be read from or written to"
    i double checked the read/write privileges on my external drive and nothing has changed since i got it. (it's still read/write access for my user.. and i've even tried putting a "read/write" for "all" as well. no dice)

    thanks, that actually doesn't help the issue i'm having.
    but now the problem has expanded to finder and everything else. so i'm pretty sure the external hard drive is starting to go out. i'm currently attempting to back up all 700GB of info from the drive.
