My cd/dvd drive is inop on my 13inch macbook pro and will not show a disc or eject it

cd/dvd drive will not work and will not display any disc in the drive. I have been unsucsessful in trouble this and the blank cd-r currently in the drive won't even eject manually even with a restart.

This fixed my issue, which sounds just like yours:

Basically:
1) Shut down
2) Wait until iMac has completely powered off
3) Hold down mouse button
4) Power on iMac and continue to hold down mouse button
5) Listen for sound of drive cycling itself (makes the sound of ejecting a disk)
6) Let mouse button go
7) Log in as normal

TVs don't support "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", so you will probably have to use FAT32. To format the external drive, follow the same steps as you did to format it with "Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but in the erasing screen, select "MS-DOS (FAT)" as "Format". Note that FAT32 isn't compatible with files bigger than 4 GB. Also, you may have to format the external drive in a PC

MY DVD drive is ejecting my discs. Is this a way of telling me to clean the lens, or is there some way to fix this drive?
It has the power to eject so it is working. Is there a way to get the drive up and running without removing it, or replacing it?

You could always try one of those 'lens cleaning' kits.... if no joy with that you'll need to take your machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them check out the drive. If it needs to be replaced, you can either have Apple do it or (less expensively) DIY.

To give you some precise answer it will be interesting to know which DVDs are not readable. Meaning of word 'some media' is to general and not helpful to understand the problem.
Satellite A30 is pretty old notebook model and it is possible that ODD functionality is not good anymore. You can try to clean the lens.

Hard drive will not show on desktop?

Please can someone help? when i connect my iomega ego HDD to my macbook pro it does not show on the desktop and i can not access it? i have gone to FINDER and the preferences say it will show. I have gone to the SYSTEM PROFILER and it shows as connected in the USB as a High speed Bus - Iomega ego HDD (so i know its working) also i have gone to DISK UTILITY and it registers as 500 GB external raid.
Does anyone know how i can access my hard drive?

I would suggest if there is no important data (or data that cannot be moved to another device) to erase the external and reformat the drive.
System Profiler can see it which is a good sign and is recognizing the HDD, but reformatting it can often correct many of these issues with drives mounting and showing up for use.

OK. If you believe that.
When the disk is starting to die it can be bad for a moment and then be good for a while. If there was no problem while you were checking it of course it shows up good.
I tell you those are the signs of a disk that is about to die.

External dvd drive won't work on my macBook air usb port. It works on older versions of air and iMac.
Any ideas. Tried the left shift, control, option and power button sumultaniously, but did not work.

I know that no one has replied yet, but figured out the issue. I called Applecare and they couldn't figure it out, so sent me to a genuis at the Apple store. They too couldn't figure it out and told me that it was a firmware issue with the Toshiba dvd external drive. When I got home, I thought I would try one more thing. I hooked it up to a powered hub and it works perfectly. I'm not sure why no one else thought of it, but glad that I did.
