My charger cable is slowly melting

Just recently, I noticed some damage to my charger cable right at the small sleeve at the magnetic adapter.
I've always been very careful not to fold or break or damage the cord in any way. Well, recently, the end with the magnetic adapter gets extremely hot and it has started to melt the insulation.
I'm wondering if there was a recall or an issue with some batches of these cords. The nearest Apple store is quite a drive for me, around 1 hr.
TIA!

Thanks for the contact number. I suppose I'll give them a ring and see what they say. Hopefully it's covered under some kind of warranty. I imagine it's fairly dangerous to have exposed wires

  • Charger cable melted

About 2 years ago I got an ipod 4the generation for christmas. I use it all the time, and had an ipad before that (still use the ipad). My ipad 2's charging cable has served me well, and it is what I have been using until last week. It was getting worn out so I got my ipod's case and found the charging cable from it to use. It worked alright, but it was really hard to put into the iDevices' port. I just kept using my ipads charging cable. Finally, I gave the new cable a test run: I plugged my ipad in, set it on my computer (charging socket is not the same) and went to eat a sandwitch. I come back, and the thing has melted. It charged for about 20 percent and now it is broken because it melted. Wondering why this would have happened? Is it my adapter or whatever the thing is called that you plug the cord into and then put into the wall? Also, will Ibe charged for a new cable and adapter if I go to the nearby apple store? My iPod's warranty is out, but it WAS in effect when I bought the cable if that matters at all. Anyways, thanks for reading, picture is attached (bad quality, sorry, taken with my ipad).

You can buy cables on line. Try googling for them. They are cheap.

It sounds like your cable shorted internally. You say it still charges when connected to the PC? Using the same melted cable!!!??? I hope not. Why would you plug in a melted cable?
You might take it in to the apple store if near by, its under warranty along with the rest of the phone.

  • Why does my iPhone 4 not charge correctly?  Problem is definitely with the phone and not charges or chords.  Phone will charge but very slowly and no icon comes on.  Computer and iTunes doesn't recognize it a being connected.

My iPhone 4 quit charging correctly.  It does charge but very slowly and icon doesn't indicate it as charging.  I've checked cables and charges and the problem is definetily with the phone.  My car stereo no longer recognizes it as a device.  Neither does the computer.  The real strange thing to me is that when I plug it into my old klispch speaker dock it will play songs.  My battery life is good when it is charged so I don't think its the battery. I've tried resetting the phone and cleaning the charging port.  I'm out of warranty.
Would disconnecting the battery possibly reset it from some glitch or is the charging port got some bad contacts?

I checked with the Genius Bar.  It was a new dilema to the lady that was helping me.  She took it to a back room and worked on it but it came out the same.  She gave me some options for repair or credit for replacement.
I just kept the phone and put up with slowly charging it by plugging it in and then turning it off.
I couldn't transfer anything from itunes.
I finally got fed up and bought a new charging port for $10. and a toolkit for $3.  I looked up a video on youTube for the replacement and did it.
That solved all the problems, it was the charging port, must have been some bad pins or something because it patially worked.

  • Can you use the same charging cable for both an iPhone and an IPad or are they different?  When I use the charging cable for my iPhone on my Ipad, it doesn't charge.

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Extra long iPad charging cable.

Anyone know where I can get an extended charging cable for my iPad please.
I tried to use my USB extension attached to iPad cable but it won't work/charge, so I think it's best to get a longer independent cable instead, (well I'll get my carer to get one for me, unless I get one delivered lol)
I need the length to be at least 2 metres, as being disabled I need it to reach my bed from the plug point.
I have looked on amazon in uk but can't seem to find any.
Any and all help would be very appreciated indeed.
Just incase your wondering, I live in the uk so need to get one from this country if possible.

I own several of the ones from monoprice and other 3rd party makers (cable junkie). I think there must be significant current loss in those cables because they either don't work or charge very slowly. Of the 10 rooters I got from monoprice, only 1 registers as charging on my ipad but over night it only charged about 15%. The others won't charge at all. I think that's why apple doesn't sell long sync cables. Instead, their solution is a long ac cord that runs to the power block with a short sync cable.
Funny thing is I know it's physically possible to have a long sync cable. If you look in te windows of an apple store, the ipad is displayed on a stand and the sync cable is curled on the floor, must be over 10 feet in length. I ask at every store and no one knows where it came from or how to get one.

  • New iPad charging cable vs. iPhone 4s cable

Are the charging cables for the iPhone 4s and the New iPad the same? Can I use them interchangeably?

You can use the iPad charger to charge the iPhone. Not a problem. Theoretically, you can use the iPhone charger to charge an iPad. However, the new iPad has a battery that's 70% larger than the iPad 2. The iPhone charger charged the iPad 2 very slowly. I haven't tried charging my new iPad with my iPhone charger but I suspect that, in order to charge it at all, you will need to turn it off. If the iPad is on, especially if you try to use it, I don't think it will charge.
    Best of luck.

  • IPod Touch 4g USB Charging Cable(s!) Not Working. Went through 5 in a year.

I've had my 8 gb iPod Touch 4g since November 12th, 2010. I bought it from Target (so its not covered under warranty anymore) love it and use it for many hours every day, but there is a problem with the USB charging cables.
When I got my iPod, it came with the standard Apple charging cable. That cable worked for a few months (maybe... 3?) and all of a sudden stopped working. When I used my friends cord, it worked perfectly fine. She had the same exact model and cord as I did. I ended up just buying a replacement cord, thinking that this was just a fluke or whatever. No such deal. I purchased a third party cord from amazon, and it worked for a few months again. (Let me note that I also got a car and wall charger with it, those work perfectly fine to this day.) Once again, all of a sudden it broke. And again, I tried a friend's cord and it worked fine.
I ended up buying a third and fourth cords, which was also third party, and after that broke, I was fed up and went to the Genius Bar for an appointment. I explained my problem, and they made an appointment with me. Eventually, they just said to buy another cord, this time Apple brand. I did, and it has been working fine up until tonight, when it just stopped charging.
    When I say that the cords broke, I mean that all of a sudden they would stop charging my iPod, no matter where I plugged it in. (computer, wall, car, etc.) It would/will only charge if I bent it a very certain way, and then I would need to hold it there, which I obviously can't do for hours. (;
I would take this apple cord back now, since I believe there is a warranty (although, I need to double check that when I can get to the papers.) if it weren't for the fact that, from use, the coating/white plastic of the actual cord has split and you can see a few of the wires. I will have to double-check if this is covered, though because of the outside appearance, I doubt that they would take it back. This has not happened with any of the other cords, however.
What should I do? Would restoring help this problem? I have been contemplating the idea for a while, but having to re-download/etc all of my apps, music, etc., is not the most appealing idea to me.. I have reset a few things a while back, though I cannot remember what they are, sadly.
Currently, my iPod is running iOS 5, as I just updated it about a month or so ago. Before that, it was running what the iPod touch 4g originally came with... I believe it was 4.2.1?
I really love my iPod, but am fed up with having to buy cords every few months, as I have gone through four or five in just a year.

I think stevejobsfan has misunderstood your problem.
You specifically state that in one case you can see the inner cord and wires of the lead. So, either - you are mis-handling the cord or a pet is chewing it. So, if you don't have a pet - it's you.
When you remove the cord from the iPod (or from the other end of it) you should handle by the plug, not the cord itself. If you pull the cord you are straining the connection between the cord and the plug and that will eventually cause that connection to break.
If this had happened to just one cord, maybe it's the cord. If it happened to several of the same make from the same source, perhaps it may have been a faulty batch. But for it to happen five times, with cords from different sources and different manufacturers - everything points to the cord being handled too roughly.
Buy another cord - but in future, remove it by gripping the plug and not by pulling on the cord. This applies to any cord or lead, including mains powered devices. If you have any other cords for any other product, I suggest you check them for damage because damaged cords can be a fire risk and create a risk of electric shock. Mains voltage can kill.
Another thought; if you wrap cords - including headphone leads - around anything (such as the charger itself), wrap it loosely. A tight wrap also strains the cord to plug connection.

  • Even genuine iphone 5 usb charging cable does not work for an year?

I have bought an iphone 5 last year. With it, came the  original apple genuine iphone 5 lightning USB cable. It did not last for half year. I had to buy another original apple iphone 5 similar cable and it was gone within 3 months. I dont understand is it cable manufacturing problem? is apply selling fake cables? It is really annoying and I am really angry that such a reputed company cant give/ provide proper long lasting cables.
My experience with these two genuine cables was that after some months of  usage, i used to observe even if its plugged it would not charge, or if you push it hard its charging. Firstly, I never keep my phone charging all time. Then how the hack can the charging cable die? or problem arise. I bought the phone and the charging cables when I was germany. I had to buy a 20 euro local companys USB charging cable after above two stopped working with no signs of damage. I have also tried cleaning the charging jack or socket where cable is inserted. It did not help. This local charging cable started to torn out automatically and it got fully damaged, Now I am in India, I bought another cable of 10 euros and it is just two days, it would not charge again.
I am really furious now whether you use original or local USB cables they dont last for even a week? what the ****?
Do I need to really pay for those portable charger with a big price tag, that my problem will be solved? very very upset. I never have any complaint with the phone, but the charging catastrophies, really ****** me off. I think of going back to other mobile brands like samsung or nokia where there is never a charging issue or battery drainage issue once you charge its goes for days or it  is also expensive buy a nokia or samsung charger if lose it or break it. but for iphones its really bugging situation and not just me many people around the world are having sick problem with iphone brand with charging ISSUES.
APPLE PLEASE SORT THE PROBLEM OR SELL the PORTABLE IPHONE CHARGERS (WIRELESS) CHEAPER so that we dont have to use these silly little lightning cables. or I fear my APPLE I PHONE 5 is not genuine or its FAKE.
    PLEASE HELP>

Look closely at the way you handle the cables. I have never had any cable, Apple or third-party, fail on me.

  • Charger cable no longer works with iPhone 5s

    Hello:
My white lightning iPhone charger cable used to work to charge my iPhone when I plugged one end into a powered USB and the other end into the iPhone.
Now, if I am lucky, I will get a message stating that this device is not supported by Apple and may not charge this iPhone.
Is there any setting, to turn off this bypass, so that my charger cable  can be used to charge my phone?
Or what is missing from my charger cable which allowed it to charge fine in an earlier version of IOS that no longer work in 8.1.3?
    Thanks in advance

Clean the squashed fluff and debris out of the phone's charging port with a wooden tooothpick or similar. Be gentle.

  • Crease in macbook pro charger cable

Hi there, there's a small crease im my macbook pro 2011 charger cable. It is right before the bit you plug into the macbook pro and it's really annoying me as I'm worried it will tear. Is there any way i can remove this crease.
Also which is the correct way to put the mag safe charger in. do I have the wire go alongside the laptop or from behind?

No. Make an appointment at an Apple store. Let the geniuses look at it.
do I have the wire go alongside the laptop or from behind?
Doesn't really matter, although from behind, unless you want to block ports.

  • Upgraded to iOS6 and now charging cable doesn't work

I just upgraded to iOS6 n my iPhone 4, and now my charging cable doesn't work.  No...it's not an "official" Apple charger, but even the usb cable doesn't work when I plug it into my computer.  If I plug my iPad charger into it, it works fine.  How can the new operating system determine what kind of usb charging cable it "wants" to accept?  This charger and cable worked flawlessly before the OS upgrade.

Same problem here. I use a wall charger and have had success by unplugging the charger from the wall, plugging the adapter into the iPhone, then plugging charger back into wall. Had the same problem with a car charger and got the phone to charge using the same procedure. I'd love to know if this works for you. Good luck!

  • If my charging cable doesn't work do i get a new for free

if my charging cable doesn't work do i get a new for free

I had a lightning cable, that came with my iPhone 5s, that frayed and broke at the connector.  I took the cable and phone into the Apple Store and they exchanged the cable for a new one with not a question asked.  Good experience.
I think part of it is that the design of the Apple cables is quite flimsy especially at the connector and I think they see a lot of them fail.

  • I've brought a charger cable from tesco for my Iphone 3gs. 3 weeks later it stopped working completely with no notification. I tried with my computer but nothing seemed to happen when I plug my phone in. Help!

Where should I buy legitimate charger cable? Is my cable third party as I brought it from Tesco?

If it is an Apple cable it should have come in a white Apple box with an Apple label. If it didn't it is not an Apple cable. You can buy Apple cables at any Apple store or Apple's online store. There are also high quality cables from some of Apple's business partners such as Griffin.
For a 3GS most cables should work, Apple or not. This is not true for the iPhone 5 and later. So the problem may not be the cable; inspect the connector on the bottom of the phone; if it is full of lint, dirt or moisture try cleaning it. Also look for bent pins.

  • What kind of replacement charger cable do I need for my Acer Tab 8 A1-850?

I have a brand new Acer Tab 8 A1-850 (which is so far working quite nicely) but the USB charger cable was accidentally ruined after an unfortunate encounter with hot candle wax. I'd like to buy a replacement cable but know not all micro USB cables are the same. What specs should I be on the lookout for when shopping for a cable of appropriate size?

The cable should be just the normal one, the special smarts that tell the tablet to charge at full speed is in the power brick.
