My charger started on fire? I wasn't even using my phone while charging it.

My charger just started on fire and I wasn't even using my phone while it was charging.

If you do not live near an apple retail store, you should call applecare as soon as possible.  They may request photos of the area after the incident.

  • Whenever I use my phone while it's charging, it loses charge

I just recieved an iPhone 4 over the weekend and whenever I plug it in to charge, t'll charge when I don't use it. But, if I wanna do something like reply to a message or check a social network, it starts to lose charge. I really don't know what to do. Any suggestions are welcome.

Yes you can use your iPad while it is charging. I do it all the time. It will not hurt anything.

  • Using phone while charging

should the iphone be used while it is plugged in the computer charging or on the dock? will it damage the phone? should i wait until it is fully charged each time before using it?

There's nothing wrong with using your phone while it's plugged in to charge. All it might do is increase the charging time a bit. But in essence, using it while charging isn't a bad thing. I've heard though, that you don't want to make a habit of it. But that was on older phones, when batteries were a lot touchier.

Does not matter if it happened to anyone.  The fact of the matter is that it happened to YOU!

  • G5 started on fire tonight

Our G5 popped and started on fire tonight. The whole room was filled with smoke. I am glad we were home. This is a serious problem. I was wondering if anyone else has had this type of problem??
I am going to take the machine to the apple store in the morning. I am worried that this might happen to others and they may not be as fortunate as we were tonight.
    Has anyone had this problem.

This is very rare, however, if the liquid cooling system (links to G5 models with liquid cooling) started to fail, it might have been a reason for that to happen. The other reasons this might happen are:
    1. Improper grounding of your electrical, and touching your computer keyboard while conencted immediately after walking across a wet rug. I did this once to a PC and it blew a capacitor.
    2. Power surges that happen because of electrical storm, or bad electricity in the home. Have an electrician check for this.
    3. Some PowerMac G5s have an Exchange/repair program for power supply issues.
    4. iMac G5s have a history of issues with capacitors for which an exchange/repair program has been instituted.
    5. Improper ventilation of the computer whether by:
    - placing it in direct sunlight any time during the day.
    - placing the computer directly on a carpeted floor.
    - placing the computer with the vents against a wall or desk with no clearence. Feel the back of the vents for hot air. If it isn't allowed to escape a far enough distance to the point the air becomes a normal temperature you may create a situation where the computer could overheat.
    6. A fan issue happens with the computer. This often can be detected by the hardware test that shipped with the computer new:

If you don't have those discs and purchased it used, get the person you bought it from to give you the discs, as they aren't their's to keep. If they lost them, have them call AppleCare for them. Otherwise if you bought the machine new, call AppleCare yourself for them. If AppleCare doesn't have the discs anymore, I would periodically have the machine checked by a service center to make sure the fans are in good working order.
    7. Also any Mac that is 4 or more years old should get its clock battery replaced every 4 years if it has one. That shouldn't cause the machine to overheat, still it is important to do.

light on iphone4 flash will not turn off even when phone is powered down, now it is overheated and says not usable till cooled, but it won't cool.  I'm afraid it will start a fire.  Aside from breaking it, putting in in a metal pail in the yard, or putting it in a bucket of water, what can be done to keep it from setting a fire.  It is so hot it burns my skin if i touch it, so bright, it hurts to look at, so hot there is now a warning that it is not usable till it cools down, but there is no way to cool it down.

more info, this happened after update to 7.0.2, and also wifi will no longer turn on since update.  I took it in to apple store, it had one month left on warrenty, and they said that it would have had to get wet for this to happen.  I thought that maybe it got wet through my jeans pocket in the rain or something so I didn't pursue it.  Now of course, it is out of warranty by a month.

  • HT201401 Can anyone confirm that 12 hours of low to moderate use is acceptable battery life for an Iphone 5. That is all I am getting. I am using the phone less than I have used any Iphone I have ever had. The battery life between charges is less than hal

I am very disappointed with the battery life I am getting out of my Iphone 5S 64G. I charge it every night, and would be lucky to make 15 to 20 minutes of calls during the day and yet I am lucky to get much more than 12 hours of life out of the battery.
I have to make a conscious decision not to use it to avoid it running out on me. I had it back to the Apple Store last week and they ran diagnostic checks on ot and said that the hardware was within specs.
They replaced the software as it was showing that Springboard had crashed on several occasions. The other problem I was complaining about was that at least 2 or 3 times a day, the phone would refuse to wake up when I hit the home button. It would take sometimes up to a minute of pressing the button before anything would light up. The guy at the Apple store said that this was caused by Springboard crashing and that this would also be what is reducing the battery life.
I did notice that after they replaced the software, the waking up problem appeared fixed for a few days, but the battery life had not improved. Now the waking up problem is starting to return.
It is very annoying and somewhat embarrassing when you are with a client and go to make a call and your shiny flashy new Iphone 5 won't even light up. Especially when you have to borrow your clients Nokia....

My best bet would be to restore the phone. Back it up to itunes, and then reset it Factory settings. This way, any corrupt software will be removed, and you can start fresh. Make sure you back it up first. By the sounds of it, you are using the phone for business and probably need the data from it. Hope this helps!

  • Cannot boot my MacBook Pro. Tryed CMD+R, reinstall OS, error message :damaged HD. When trying to repait it says it's OK. Yesterday HD wasn't even half full when I turned it off, now it says it's full.

What may have happened is an error and a kernel panic, filling up the logfiles.
What I recommend is first to find a way to backup your data without booting the hard drive directly if it isn't already backed up, and then get Alsoft Disk Warrior to repair the hard drive.    You'll probably want an external drive from http://www.macsales.com/
And you'll want to go into Hard drive -> Library -> Logs, System -> Library -> Logs, and Users -> yourname -> Library -> Logs to remove whatever you find there.
If after booting it fills up again, start by removing all startup items in your System Preferences for your user, and rebooting in safe mode with the shift key held down. If the hard drive is over 85% full after removing the logfiles, you may want to look at what were the last applications you installed.
Peer2peer software if installed can be as bad as a virus, because it enables others to access your computer. Insecure wireless networks are just as bad, if they are WEP or no encryption and someone is within 1500 feet of your computer.
If no such software is installed, your RAM probably has failed.    Run the hardware test that came with your computer, by booting with the 'D' key.
If nothing shows up there, it can still be the RAM.   Especially if you've seen any 4 language screens telling you to restart.

  • I have a iPhone 5 and it started to shut off at random times and takes a while to turn back on. Sometimes I'll be doing something on my phone and it'll flicker then shut down. Is this a battery problem??

I have an iPhone 5 that just started to shut off by itself. Any suggestions why?

Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

Plug your device into the original charger & block in a wall outlet and leave it alone for a couple of hours. Then, while it is still plugged in, restart it by holding down the home button and the power button for 10-15 seconds until you see the Apple, then let go.

  • Using phone while battery is charging

This is probably a stupid question from a novice cell phone user, but here it is.  I have an LG Cosmos touch.  Can I turn on the phone and use it while the battery is charging or can I disconnect it before it has fully charged so that I can use it?  I am having trouble anticipating when it will need to be charged and then find myself without a phone when I have to stop and charge it.

There are no stupid questions - and yours is a good one!
The newer Li-Ion cell phone batteries do not have "memory", so partial charges or "topping off" a charge do not have the same effect as with the older NiMh or NiCad batteries (and there is debate over the NiMh memory effect as well, but that's another topic!) Yes, you can use the phone with a partial charge.
It's probably better to fully charge the phone each night, or every other night if it gets you through two days. If, like my BB, it lasts about a day and a half, just charge it each night, so you start each day with a full charge.
And I do use my phone when it is on the charger if I have to; I've heard advice both ways (it's ok and don't do it!)

Hi everyone! I tried to install the new iOs 7 on my iphone 4, but it wasn't completed (showing error 4005). Now, my iphone is stuck on the itunes' logo with the usb cord, and I can't use my phone. And itunes doesn't detect my iphone when I connect it on my computer, so I can't put it in recovery mode or someting like that... What can I do?? I tried everything they tell me to do in the apple support but nothing seems to work. Thank you!

    No problem, glad to help!
Update: my PC USB hub was connected to a USB 3 port, I connected the 30 pin cable directly to my PC, And the restore worked just fine. Restored phone from iCloud backup and seems to be working fine.
