My click wheel has frozen on my nano

I have had my nano for two days and the click wheel froze randomly when I put a song on pause....I reset it a billion times and nothing happened so I am now restoring it but it is taking forever how long is it supposed to take?
Is there anything else I could do?

When I restored my iPod it literally took like 15 seconds. But I think it should take a lot longer.
If you are restoring your iPod it should fix it. If it doesn't then you should take it into apple.

  • Ipod Video 80gb with click wheel has sound, but no audio

My ipod video 80gb with click wheel has sound, but no audio.  I can hear the clicking of the wheel and selections made through the headphones, but I cannot get music, video, etc. to play audio.  I did the 5 R's and installed a new headphone jack prior to posting here.  I am all out of ideas and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you connect it to an iPod Dock Stereo to check if there is music, coming out, if not the Hard Reset would solve your problem or else the Audio chip has called it a day.
I know you mentioned doing the 5Rs, but did you see the Apple Logo and the language prompt? Sorry, most of the users here, doesn't do the Hard Reset correctly.
Try the iPod Hard Reset -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs till the Apple logo comes ON, then release the button
    Select your preferred language.
This wont delete or erase any song/data on your iPod Classic.
See this Apple Support Article on 5Rs

  • The infamous problem of the Click Wheel getting frozen

Since I've read a lot of stuff on the internet about this very common problem, and that nobody has found a solution, I wanted to start this topic in order to solve it through different experiences in the community.
I live in Spain, but bought my iPod nano in Canada last October, and I noticed the click wheel problem since the very beginning. Sometimes it got frozen, so I used the Hold Button to “reset” it and it worked again, but I have to say that it was very annoying to get this stuff stucked from time to time.
But in December, it started to get frozen more frequently, and now it happens every time I turn the iPod on. It responds to shaking, so I shake it and start listening to it in random play, and after some minutes (may be an hour, or may be never), and after many “Hold Switch slides”, I get it back working properly again. It normally keeps working fine for a while, but suddenly it can get frozen again.
Here is a list of observations I’ve made, despite the problem seems to be very randomly (sometimes it fixes 2 min before turning on, sometimes it gets an hour, sometimes it never unfreeze):
-Some people have said that it’s a moisture problem. Well, it is happening here, where humidity is high, but I was in a very dry place for Xmas and it happened the same way. But the fact that it works when it is hot rather than when it is cold is in support of this hypothesis.
-Some people say it’s some dirt between the wheel and the contacts. I tried cleaning the borders of the wheel and it didn’t worked.
-If I charge it full, it works immediately, but for a while
-Sometimes I turn it on and immediately touch the wheel and it works, but 1 sec latter it isn’t working again. Sometimes I turn it on and it doesn´t work at all.
-Of course I tried the “5 R’s” and a full restore. Reinstallation and updates of iPod software doesn’t work either.
    SO:
    1- Any suggestions?
2- Is Apple going to do something with this? (the problem is here since iPod Nano 2G). I’ve read somewhere that their policy is to tell you that the iPod is so cheap that you can buy another one (but it seems that is a serial problem so that irrational answers will not work)

    Some points to ponder:
It is very difficult to determine from Internet reports how common a problem really is for any product with a very high sales volume. If millions are sold, hundreds of reports still just represent a tiny fraction of them. Generally, if a problem really is inherent in its design or manufacture, a very high return rate follows & the maker is forced to correct it to stay in business.
Internet reports also suffer from the problem of not always providing enough info to determine if the issue is exactly the same in each report, or if it has the same cause. Quite often there are a number of "me too" reports that list no details or are too vague to determine much. Sometimes a follow up reveals that user error, abuse, or post-manufacturing damage is involved in some of the reports.
This is not meant to imply that real problems in design or manufacture don't exist, only that it isn't a good idea to make overly broad assumptions about commonality without sufficient information.
You have provided a lot of useful info about your own experience, enough to rule out some of the theories & to make others seem much less likely. But it is still important to consider that those theories may explain some of the reports & that the same symptom does not mean the same cause must always be involved.
With that out of the way, here is what I see as a synopsis of the symptoms you observe:
    • The frozen scroll wheel problem was intermittent but occurred from day one of ownership
    • It got worse over time & now occurs every time the iPod (Nano?) is powered up
    • Toggling the Hold switch repeatedly seems to temporarily cure the problem
    • Performing the 5 R's has no effect
    • Cleaning the borders of the wheel has no effect (details?)
    • The problem doesn't occur if the iPod is fully charged (details?)
    • Weather effects may be involved somehow but not in an obvious way
If this is accurate, it would be useful to know how many other users see any of the same things, or if they see something substantially different.
Also, note that the participants in this forum are just users & cannot know what if anything Apple will do about this issue. The terms of use prohibit our discussing Apple policy so all we can do here is try to uncover as many facts as we can about when the symptoms occur & what does & doesn't work to resolve them.

  • IPod Click Wheel games compatible with ipod nano 5th Generation

I've found the iPod Click Wheel Games by clicking the triangle that appears next to the "App Store" tab and clicking the third option, "iPod Click Wheel Games." But when I look at the details of any of the games it says they are compatible with:
"This game is compatible with iPod nano (3rd and 4th generation), iPod classic, and iPod (5th generation) only. It cannot be played on your computer, nor is it compatible with other iPod models or iPhone."
Does this mean that I cannot use them on my iPod nano 5th generation? or is the iPod nano being referred to as "iPod (5th generation)"
I guess it just seems silly that a game is only compatible with older versions or that the newest iPod nano can NOT operate older games.
Can anyone explain this? or has anyone tried to download one of these iPod Click Wheel Games and found that it actually Does work for an iPod nano 5th generation?

    Can anyone explain this?

  • Broken click wheel repair - or 6th gen nano replacement?

OK, my daughter had an ipod 4th gen for her birthday in April 2009. Red, inscribed, from the Apple site. She loves it - it is her life. Just a year and a few months after, it has suffered the standard fault with 4th gen - first the click wheel only worked when the power cable was inserted - now the click wheel doesn't work at all.
The first question is - is there any scope for getting Apple to recognise that this is a design fault with 4th gen, and that they should fix it for free? Given that the nearest Apple store is too far away, how do I email them to ask the question?
It seems as though repair is at least half the price of a new one - so one option might be to buy a replacement. But she wouldn't want to buy one, only for a new and better one to be released a few weeks later. Anyone know what the release date of the 6th generation nano is, and in particular, what the spec is expected to be? Is it going to have anything extra over the 5th gen (eg more memory for the same price)? Any idea on the likely cost of the 6th gen compared to the 5th gen?
Any help very gratefully received - as you can tell, there is an air of desperation here!

    Thanks.
I'm not sure what others think, but my daughter makes heavy use of the video feature on her nano, so the 6th gen seems to be quite a major step backwards. So she is considering buying a 5th gen (my middle daughter has one of those and he likes it - shame the fm radio only works with the headphones and not in her docking speakers - suggestions gratefully received). I guess se'll need to buy fast as the stock will be used up quickly.
As it was effecitively dead, I have used the Youtube guides to dismantle her 4th gen. It seems to me as though the ribbon cable for the click wheel goes across the power/docking station connector. It looks to me as though it gets rubbed/flexed/kinked on the left hand side when this connector is used, and I think that might have caused the fault. I've ordered a replacement for the click wheel workings (costing £6.99) and I'll try to fit it. I'm estimating chance of success at about 5%, but we'll see how it goes.. It is never really going to be the same again, I'm sure.

  • Click wheel is frozen and resetting doesn't help.

The click wheel on my wife's ipod nano is not working. I've reset the iPod several times but the wheel doesn't respond at all. Any ideas? Thanks!

also i think i may have been half way through installing a updated firmware when my PC crashed. I had to resttart and i think its happened ever since then.

Trying to send email and then the wheel came up and now page has frozen - how do I close this down as cannot close window?

Just put yourself in the To field, and bcc everyone else.
Actually, I believe the standards for email require a recipient address in a To field, even if some mailers let it go without.

  • Sank my old click wheel iPod, bought an iPod Nano and am fumbling around like my grandfather programming a VCR to synch the Nano with iTunes.  Picked up iTunes Match due to push marketing, but I lack in iOS device save for the flipping nano.  Help!

Sank the old iPod.  Bought a Nano.  Upgraded iTunes.  Can't find a way to synch the device.  Also picked up iTunes Match assuming it would work with this, but seem to believe I am hosed based on NOT having another iOS device and the Nano not supported by iTunes Match.
For a guy who works in Technology and advises on strategic go-to-market issues, I feel like an 80 year old trying to program a blue ray player.
Any phone or chat assistance available for me to accelerate this brute force fumble bum process?

also, i think i have used the same email/password on both devices and thats whats mucked it all up. I didn't really understand how itunes worked before i jumped it...I don;t mind deleting all on my ipod if i can just get the nano set up with music and keep the games, audiobook purchased on it...any suggestions?

  • My i pod nano click wheel doesn't work. how do i fix it?

my i pod nano click wheel has stopped working. My i pod still works when in my docking station but the wheel doesn't. Anyone got any ideas what I can do? I've tried to restore settings but that hasn't worked.

That is a hardware issue.  Take the iPod Nano to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.  If you want to DIY - iPod Repair Tutorials

  • Nano Click Wheel!

All excited about having my first every Apple product I was dismayed to find that on the second day of owning my Nano the click wheel has decided to stop working. All the buttons appear to work but I cannot scroll up and down in the menu function. Have tried resetting - but it will not work (holding down menu and center button). Have restored settings through computer and still no joy. Please dont tell me this is how all Apple products are going to work.

    Alsapal,
You say reset doesn't work. Do you mean it did reset but that didn't fix the scrollwheel issue or that you couldn't get it to reset? If you can't get reset to work then try holding the buttons for longer - it responds after a few seconds.
If reset isn't fixing your scroll wheel then I think you need a replacement. Phone Applecare or return it to your retailer and arrange for this.
Don't fear - not all Apple products are like this. I am on my third Apple computer and have just bought a nano for my wife (other family members have bought iPods and Macs on my recommendation), I have been very satisfied with all the Apple products I have owned, or recommended.
    Good luck,
    Gareth

  • App Store Filtering? Can I see list of Apps for Click Wheel Interface iPods

It's very convenient that Apple has made it easier to find Click-Wheel Games for the iPod Nano and other models sporting the click-wheel interface.
Does anyone know some way to filter Apps so one can determine what other (non-game) apps are compatible with the Click-Wheel interface? I would think one would also want to be able to filter on iPhone, iTouch, or iPad.
    Basically, a compatibility filter.
    Thanks.

Does anyone know some way to filter Apps so one can determine what other (non-game) apps are compatible with the Click-Wheel interface?
There's only about 18 games compatible with the click wheel iPods so there;s really nothing to filter.
If it works on an iPhone/iPad/touch, it will not work on the click wheel iPods and vice-versa.

  • Click wheel is a bit loose...

I have this nano for almost a year now. I take really good care of it. But now I notice that the click wheel is a bit loose. The click wheel itself can be displaced about 1mm. Is that normal? or something needs to be done?

I would definitely return it if i were you. I kept mine past the return time, and the click wheel has pretty much come off of my iPod. When I sent it in to Apple to fix it, they sent it back and said it was my fault it happened. Apple isn't my favorite company at the moment to say the least.

  • Click Wheel Very Sensitive

The click wheel on my new iPod Nano 3rd Gen seems very sensitive. When I think it's set on a menu selection I lift my thumb (carefully) and it moves up or down. Is there a way to adjust the click wheel so it has a heavier action?

You know I have this problem too... I do have a silicone skin over it which I thought was most of the problem.. But I went looking in settings and thought let's turn on the clicker (Settings/Clicker). I think it actually helps - it might be that the act of clicking slows it down ever so slightly.
It's weird I picked it up and it seemed to do it... then I turned the Clicker on speaker played with it and then turned it off and I swear it works better. If you don't mind the clicker maybe leaving it on makes sense
