My clip will not allow me to set its transparency

OK- I am getting the Tom Wolsey book but in the meantime my FCE HD is being hard learning:
I have a full clip of 4 minutes of my daughter singing while seated. But I also have her singing the same song (lip synching) while walking and sitting in a different position as well as a nice pan of the beach we filmed at.
Now- I have put the first "master" clip in the lower of the two "slots" (the one called V1) and rendered it. It looks great. Then I placed the short clips to match up audio-wise and rendered those. They appear in V2 and appear and block out the master as they should.
So far so good.
Now I'd like to have the short clips fade in instead of cutting in suddenly.
I did this once before already with the kind help offered here by using the wee "graph" button at the bottom left and then used the pen to manipulate the black line which appeared to fiddle with transparency.
The black line is appearing but NOT on the clips I have placed above the master. No matter what I tweak they are just black-line-less!
What am I doing wrong?
Simple idiot-proof explanation sought.
FYI- I have even moved the v1 to V2 and unmuted the audios from the clips (which I imported so that I could line up the clips audibly) to try and coax that black line into them. It just is not happening. Waaah!

Firstly- pardon me while I pick myself off the floor from awe.
It is YOU, yourself. Well- I have ordered the book because everyone speaks so highly of you. In fact I so toyed with the idea of the autographed one but I am in the UK and in dire need here. I have found my learning curve is severely compromised since February 1992 when I had our daughter and futher on the 2nd of June this year when our shop burned down. LOL! My story and I am sticking to it!
Secondly- I have never been able (well- the two times I dragged imported clips to my timeline) to view and play around with clips WITHOUT rendering them. This is the primary reason why I gave up after managing to do one opacity/transparency overlap. I am not 100% clear if you are telling me that I SHOULD or should NOT need to do this but it is tedious.
The "graph" button which, I assume, is the Clip Overlay button, has been depressed and undepressed and all that jazz. And yep- it shows the black line on the master (base clip of the full performance at 4 minutes in length) video and audio as it ought. Just not on the clips I have in V2 (video or audio).
I have just done the overlaying in synch the dummy's way (hard labourious, teeth-grindingly) and placed the master with the good audio at V1 (with that little v1 locked up to it) and put the littler clips at V2 (with no v2 OR v1 thingie beside it- those are the "source" something or others?).
I kept moving them by dragging them to where I reckoned they'd fit and listened to the double audio till them matched and then rendered the video (as that was no longer "rendered" and I was presented with the blue screen).
But they never show the editable opacity black line...
I mean- I am not trying to do anything terribly difficult yet as I find the more involved the processes the less inclined I am to be "creative". Give me textile design any day!

Anyone got any ideas how to get around this terrible downgrade of the software ?
BTW I have just discovered that iPhoto and its' libraries are still there, so I can go back but be left behind and frozen in time on this version if I do.

That are all good points - but Photos is a completely new application. and it is only version 1.
Continue to use iPhoto, girraween; the next update to Photos will probably add a few more features.
iPhoto 9.6.1 is working very well with MacOS X 10.10.3.
The migration let iPhoto installed and also your iPhoto Library will still work with iPhoto.
If you did not uninstall iPhoto, it will still be there in your Applications folder. And if you had updated to the latest version iPhoto 9.6.1 before you upgraded to MacOS X 10.10.3, you can simply drag iPhoto back to the Dock from your Applications folder and continue to use it. Double click iPhoto and confirm, that you want to open iPhoto and not Photos. It is not compulsory to use Photos, while it it still the first release. When you launch iPhoto, you will see a warning, that the iPhoto Library has been migrated to Photos, but simply click the "Open iPhoto" button.The library will still work with iPhoto. ()see: If Photos won't open a library that you already migrated - Apple Support
If your iPhoto version is not iPhoto 9.6.1, you need to update it.

The main idea is to move the iPhoto app to the Trash, so Spotlight does not see it as installed, reload the AppStore, and then to try to download again from the App Store - from your Purchases tab, not from the main page, since you can neither buy iPhoto nor update it, but you can reinstall, if your AppleID is associated with it.

Reminder app not working correctly, issue started around Sept. 1,2014. Will not allow me to set date and time for a reminder.

Today I noticed an issue with my Reminder app on my IPhone 5s. Using OS 7.1.2. I called Apple, and the tech didn't know what he was doing and just trying different things.The reminder app will not let me set a date and time for reminder. Finally he escalated the call to a senior advisor who was rude, arrogant and unprofessional. He insisted the Reminder App was updated with the new update of IOS September/October 2013. Not true, the issue just started about 5 days ago August 31,2014. Now there is an additional reminder line for reminder entries that I have to use and have to transfer all my reminders manually from the other part of the app. The feature does exist; if I try to set a date and time for the reminder it appears for 1-2 seconds and then disappears.
Has anyone else noticed this issue?

iOS 7 was released 18 Sep 2013. At this time, the Reminders app was updated (with most everything else).

Do a clean (re)install and delete the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

Firefox will not allow me access to their help area

In Firefox 4 it will not allow me to set my home page.
It just shows former home pages. And yes, I do go to options, general and attempt to change to current page displayed.
Firefox 4 is not a bad browser but it is irritating that the arrogance of MS is starting to be reflected in their upgrades.
They have initiated Firefox 4 without any real attempt to help with existing add ons that do not show up.
They attempt to load more toolbars on us when most of us want less.
Please, just try to be consumer orientated, as you have been before 4, and stop trying to be MS, with all their arrogance and ignorance.

Have Office 2010 and 2013 installed (installing 2010 first, then 2013) and after Windows Update applied Office 2010 SP2 later on, all of my Office file associations (except for Outlook, it points to 2013 as
expected) open up Office 2010 programs. And I'm happy that some programs (Access for example) continue to default to Access 2010.
Ok, so the problem is that for those Office programs that I want to associate to 2013 versions (Excel, PowerPoint & Word as the biggest examples), when I go into "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default
Programs\Set Associations" and pick .doc as an example (I've also tried .xls, .xlsx, .docx) and click on "Change Program", then "More Options", "Look for another app on this PC", and finally navigate to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office 15\root\office15" to double click on excel.exe or winword.exe as appropriate, the selection is ignored (i.e. the icon doesn't change to the Office 2013 style and double clicking on .doc file opens it up in Word 2010).
I do understand there is a "Fix" by either repairing the Office 2013 install or I believe to have seen a Microsoft downloadable fix program, though I do not want to run these as I'm told they will reset
all file associations to Office 2013, and there are still a couple of programs I want to open up in Office 2010, till I get a comfort level with Office 2013. Also realize that once Office 2013 SP1 comes out, it will do the same thing that Office 2010
SP2 did and change the file associations to 2013, whether I want it to or not, hopefully by then I won't have much need for Office 2010.
Also, I find it troubling that the "Set Associations" will not allow me to select specific programs, and I wonder which other File Associations has Microsoft felt appropriate to restrict access.
Look forward to the feedback as it pertains to the above (which I realize is unique to my IT Testing needs).

For all users on this computer, please change associate program of the .doc or file type you would like to under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes.
For current user account, please change associate program of the .doc or file type you would like to under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes. If there is no such extension, please create new keys for it.

In order to download to your phone over the air, you need to be connected to WiFi.
It's possible the Internet connection through Verizon is not stable enough for the downlaod to begin (it is a very large download).
You might want to head over to Starbucks with your laptop for the afternoon and see if you can download it over their WiFi.

My guess is that the security settings on your router and iPod do not match.
For a test, change your router so there is no security. See if you can connect and get to the Internet. If that works, set up the router with security and use the same settings for the iPod.

Thanks for the pointers folks. Yeah, 1.5GB is pretty poor isn't it? There are other suppliers, but you have to get a their phone line installed to access the internet so it's an £85 setup fee plus a day off work for a guy to come round and drill a hole in your wall before you even get to the monthly costs.
Don't get me wrong though - I'm certainly not an Apple basher, but am equally frustrated with both them and the ISP.
Virgin Media spend all kinds of money advertising their broadband as the fastest in the UK, but don't tell you (up front anyway) that you'll be cut off if you actually try and use it.
Apple on the other hand carry on with their 'it just works' mantra, but with Apple TV this only applies if you meet certain criteria (again, not mentioned up front).
I guess it aint a biggie, as i was gifted my Apple TV, and love all the other stuff it does, but from the number of posts on this forum can see that there's a lot of angry customers out there who want explanations as to why they're having similar problems to me.
Will be very interesting to see if Apple release any kind of software update that turns the flash drive from a buffer to permanent storage, to at least ease some of the pain...

I have also tried the fixes offered in this forum such as using the "Other" mail in setting up the gmail accounts, and not using the dedicated gmail setting. I also went to google and signed in and enable the additional devices. I had the same problems with the original account I set up for gmail, but it corrected when i went to using the "Other" instead of the Gmail button. I was able to set up the new gmail accounts on my iphone without problem and on my husband's ipad1 for his gmail account. Just the ipad 2 is giving me problems. Again, thanks for any suggestions.

The trial can only be loaded 1 time as far as I know. You could try http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html, remove any left over parts of the Acrobat folder, and reboot. Then try an install again, but my guess is you will have to purchase Acrobat at this point.

I think you are mistaken, your ipad has no problem to sync with the cloud. Your pc however does, since you can't check the check box. So why do not you try to concentrate on that part of problem and find out why. For starters, check what happens if you disable your antivirus/firewall on your computer/network and check box again. Describe what you see and messages you get. Good luck.

Have you verified that your Windows 8.1 is a Pro or Enterprise edition? The Basic edition cannot join a domain.
