My company's default browser is IE 8 - is hosting a Muse site on Business Catalyst a bad idea?

I've created a site, and we are currently in pre-production. Our IT department says that it must be compliant with IE 8, as that is our standard across the company. I looked at the site in IE 8, and it looks fine, but in reading the tech specs for Adobe CC it says that:
The Creative Cloud website is designed to work optimally in the latest versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Internet Explorer. The site should degrade gracefully on older browsers; you may have trouble using certain features on those older versions. Internet Explorer 8 and earlier are not supported.
So now I'm wondering if I need to go find some old program to work with IE 8... any direction would be lovely!

If the users of your company are viewing the site in IE 8 and it works fine you should be fine, however, I am not sure if the BC Admin (or the Creative Cloud site) will work in IE 8. As long as they do not need to access those you should be fine if your site works in IE 8.
On a side note: tell the IT department they should upgrade to a real browser. It would benefit the entire company as many, many companies and sites are dropping support for IE 8. It is such an outdated browser. If they are still using Win. XP then tell them to use Firefox or Chrome. (I know it is much easier said than done, but it never hurts to encourage them. => )

• In-Browser Editing disapears on some pages of my site in Business Catalyst

I uploaded an Adobe Muse Site to Business Catalyst as a temporary site so my client can proof it and learn how the in-browser editing works. The first two pages allow the elements to be edited by way of the Edit or Click buttons, but any of the inner pages do not have the ability to be edited. These pages can only be reach using the main navagation menu placed at the top of each inner page.
I should mention that I'm using the "Upgraded Content Editor" in "Site Settings" "Beta Features". If I turn that beta feature off, then there is no way to navagate to other pages because there is no "Pages" menu item present.
Please Help!
Thanks

Sorry for the confusion, but the problem occurs after getting into the site.
click on one of the locations then under the login is a link saying “Temporary Login Link” which will bring you to the home page
this link:
http://allaboardparentproof.businesscatalyst.com/AdminConsoleXT/icecube/home---on-the-huds on.html
you can edit these elements, but then click on any othe menu link - “Menu” Forms” etc.
The problem is when you get on any other page the edit ability disappears.
And if you look at the url you can see that it hasn’t change since the Home page.
If you replace the “home” in the url “home—- on-the-hudson.html” to “Menu” then it works properly.

• Won't lock in on my default browser choice

I can set Safari to make Firefox 2 my default browser, but when I quit Safari, the setting goes back to FF3. Don't ask why I have two versions of FF. If you want my 200 word explanation, it's already in the FF forum. I can set the default email to whatever I like and that sticks fine after I quit Apple's Mail. This tells me the problem is specific to Safari. Question 1 is how do I make my default browser choice stick? Question 2 is how would I set my default browser if I were to delete Safari?
By the way, isn't this idea of making the system-brand browser essential to system use exactly what the Justice Department sued Microsoft about? Well, that's a debate so forget it for now.

I was wondering about that too. Prior to posting my suggestion, I moved the internetconfig.plist and the internetconfigpriv.plist files to the desktop, then restarted Safari. My browser preference list remained unchanged - looks like this before and after:
I don't have Camino 1.6.4 or VLC installed in the system. Not sure how this source list is created, however, it did remind me to have another look at Flock. I upgraded to v 2.0.3. Pretty nice RSS reader.

• E-mail links won't open when Firefox is my default browser, Sup??

When Firefox is my default browser, links in my e-mail or web sites that open in my e-mail, do not open. Right clicking on the link doesn't do anything for me. When I click on the link the border of the page dims and brightens but no access to the linked page and no error messages. This requires me to use IE as my default browser, that opens links fine, which my whole psychic/genetic makeup abhors. It seems that no one knows what is wrong or how to fix the problem. I tried the chat room but was never able to get through and now it is removed. Is there ANY way to get an answer/solution to this problem?
PS My XP desktop computer Firefox works fine.

I still have this problem and now it is starting to affect the browsers functionality and useability. When Firefox is my default browser any link outside of Firefox won't open which is becoming a nuisance. I am running Windows 7 which may be the cause of the problem via a setting but I can't locate the needle in the haystack or it may have happened at a Firefox update. Firefox has been my favorite and only browser since Netscape 1.0 but if I can't resolve this problem I will have to switch to another which I really don't want to do. Help!!!

• Credentials for In-Browser Editing in Business-Catalyst

Hi!
IN-BROWSER-EDITING is a really cool service, but it seems there’s one quite critical point to this.
Sharing the test-site means for me, communicating the url to someone, so he can have a look at the actual site via, e. g.: myproject.businesscatalyst.com/ or even on my own server, e. g. www.myproject.com/ with no further interaction possibility.
But I’d like to open the gate for the client to edit texts by himself, as shown in Dani Beaumont’s video “Katie’s Café” / www.katiesbakerycafe.com. Here’s the clip :
https://helpx.adobe.com/muse/how-to/site-owners-edit-live-sites.html
And here another clip relative to the same topic:
https://helpx.adobe.com/muse/how-to/muse-in-browser-site-editing.html
Now, if I host the site on my own server, things are quite clear: I’ll set up a separated ftp access for my client.
But if I host the site on Business Catalyst, things don’t look so clear anymore.
Katie would like to edit Details like her daily specials and things like photos of her bakery items. Therefor, so she needs to log-into the site administration. I was chatting with the MUSE-Support this morning and they suggested I should share my credentials to the client (Katie) so she can log-into the project and edit things online. Hmm…
But I don’t think Dani Beaumont, like me, would like to share her Adobe-Product-Manager’s credentials with Katie. Would she?
Support: Yes, you can share the url but for editing you have to share the credentials
Me: And Tom’s Sandwich over the road wouldn’t like Katie to have access to his projects-files Dani is also working on.
I can’t really believe Adobe is suggesting us to share our own credentials, i. e. working with and even producing such a massive security issue in Creative Cloud. I hope not. Well, actually I think I missed something. Or didn’t I?
Any hints would be much appreciated!
G

Hi,
Rather than sharing your credentials, you'll want to add "Katie" as a user of the Business Catalyst site. There is a direct link to "Add In-Browser Editing Users" in the dialog that shows up after Publish completes.
The same page can be accessed by selecting the File > Manage Business Catalyst Site menu in Muse, and then (in the Business Catalyst page that opens in the browser) selecting Site Settings > Admin Users.

• Site won't display correctly when 'Published' to Business Catalyst but does when 'Preview' in browse

Basically I have a subscription to Muse and with that the ability to host one site with Business Catalyst. When checking the first site I designed I'd use 'Preview in Browser' and the site occasionaly displayed incorrectly, so I changed my habits to publishing the work-in-progress site to the BC url with this current site.
Unfortunately there are multiple display problems with doing this; the two images below show the difference between 'Publish' to the BC domain and 'Preview site in browser'.
I've cleared the cache of the browser multiple times and used both Firefox and Safari and the problem still remains. I'm assuming it's a problem with Business Catalyst?
Does anyone have a solution for this? Has data become corrupted in BC, and if so is there a way of 'flushing' the data held on the BC site clean to start from scratch?
Would really appreciate some help here as it's impossible to show my client the current state of the site
Thanks in advance

Can you try to check with a different browser or if possible on a different system or device ?

• How to set default browser for SM_CRM (like Firefox)?

Hey guys,
as in the company environment, IE version is too old for CRM Web UI - performance problem and it can't be changed soon, I'd like to ask how to use SM_CRM (with single sign-on) to open the browser window in Firefox?
Firefox is already set as default browser, but SM_CRM still opens IE.
Any suggestion is welcome!

• Stagewebview is not using the default browser?

Hello community,
We encounter an issue regarding the userAgent we get with Javascript when our page is viewed from an Android App running Air and using the Stagewebview.
We noticed that despite the default browser set as Google Chrome (Webkit v.537), we identify that app using Webkit v.534.
After a lot of trouble shooting, it seems that there is a difference between "native" browser and "default" browser.
Is that correct?
If so, the question is: Is there a way to make Stagewebview use the user selected browser/engine ?
Our website needs to display text vertically (japanese text) and the form elements are not well recognized in the 534 version browser, but work perfectly in the last version of Chrome we can get running on those devices.
(We target Android 4.2+ users)
Any input will be appreciated.
Cedric Simon

Hello ArkadiuszOkoń,
I downloaded the 4.4W sdk and replaced the file as proposed, but I don't notice any change.
On Desktop, I can see that Air webkit 533 is used. did my compile really took the new file into configuration?
I'm using FlashDevelop, are there settings to change in the bat fie or in the manifest?
As you proposed about the <uses-sdk> settings, some are already setup and I didn' change them, should I higher the minSdkVersion for example?
Here is the current section:
<android>
<manifestAdditions><manifest android:installLocation="auto">
<uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="8" />
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET" />
<uses-feature android:required="true" android:name="android.hardware.touchscreen.multitouch" />
</manifest></manifestAdditions>
</android>
Also, Jan-F-W, thank you for your proposal,
I should explain something else:
The app is using "stagewebviewbridge" package that one can find here : stagewebviewbridge - Extend Adobe AIR StageWebView ( Desktop, iOS, Android ) - Google Project Hosting
We do not have access to the source code of that app, but we have to investigate the case and propose a solution otherwise the development company in charge will not make a single move.
So I created a sample application that loads a page on my machine and that displays the userAgent to check what engine is running.
(in that case, I can use a StageWebView directly if I want)
I can see that depending on the useNative boolean parameter of StageWebView I get a different userAgent, which is great.
BUT, I had a doubt on mobile, as stated by Adobe Documentation: This parameter is ignored on mobile.
In doubt, I checked on the mobile device, and in both base, the device "native" browser is used, not the Chrome set as "default".
Maybe my tests are not accurate enough? I'm not a flash developer, so I feel a bit lost there.
Thank you for your guidance.

• Connecting to a website with default browser

Hi I am kind of new to Java, anyway I have written an application that displays information from a database in a table. I wanted to be able to right click on a particular entry and then connect to a website based on the key field. Does anyone know how to start the the users default browser, from within my application (eg netscape) and then connect to the specified site
Cheers

You might want to take a look at BrowserLauncher. It is a much better method than runtime.exec.
I dont have the link to the site with me, but search at Google for BrowserLauncher, you should get the link.
I think it is also registered at sourceforge.

• How do you invoke the default browser for Unix/OSX

Does anyone know how to programmatically display the contents of a URL in the default browser for a Unix system? I found a javaworld article on doing this using Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmd). The article gives the cmd string for invoking the default browser in Windows, and for invoking the Netscape browser in Unix.
This can easily be extended to invoke any known browser executable in a known path on a Unix system; but I'd like to invoke the default browser without knowing what or where it is. I'm specifically targetting Mac/OSX, but any Unix solution is worth trying.
Is there a Unix command for launching the default browser to display the contents of a given URL? Or is there an alternative approach, rather than invoking Runtime.exec()?
-Mark

After extensive google searching, I came across a partial solution. This code detects the default browser on a Mac, and provides an elegant solution for trying standard browsers in turn for other Unix systems. I tested it on WIndows XP and Mac OSX 3.9, and it detected the default browser each time. A suped up version of this tool is available as a SourceForge project. You can find it here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/browserlaunch2/
Here's the simplified code:

Method openURL = fileMgr.getDeclaredMethod("openURL",
new Class[] {String.class});
openURL.invoke(null, new Object[] {url});
else if (osName.startsWith("Windows"))
Runtime.getRuntime().exec("rundll32 url.dll,FileProtocolHandler " + url);
else { //assume Unix or Linux
String[] browsers = {
"firefox", "opera", "konqueror", "epiphany", "mozilla", "netscape" };
String browser = null;
for (int count = 0; count < browsers.length && browser == null; count++)
if (Runtime.getRuntime().exec(

• If Firefox is set as the default browser, and any application attempts to open a new window, this fails and I get the error "Firefox is already running..."

Here is what I am running:
Microsoft Windows 7, Service Pack 1, Fully updated to 4/10/2012
Fresh Install of Firefox 11. No add-ons enabled as a result of troubleshooting.
I am a user with administrator rights
UAS is disabled.
To begin, this has been going on Since Firefox 10 or so. A few months now.
I am able to open Firefox. My add-ons worked (ABP, Flashblock, ABP Element Hiding Helper, IETAB2, Downthemall, Greasemonkey, 4chan extension) had no problems. Firefox is set and has been set for the last two years as my default web browser.
However Since approximately Firefox 10 or so, maybe before that, If I have a Firefox session open, and any other application attempts to open a session in a new window, I get the Firefox is already running, but not responding error."
I attempted to follow troubleshooting advice already posted (look for parent.lock files left behind [none present], multiple sessionstore.js files [none present], create a new user profile, attempted to clear out the "read-only" permission in windows 7, however as soon as it is cleared, the read only permission returns.)
As a last resort, I deleted the Firefox folder, the %APPDATA%/Mozilla directory in its entirety, then utilized CCleaner to remove any and all references to Firefox in the windows registry, then did a full re-install, no extensions installed right now.
I checked preferences and have the option "open new windows in a new tab" checked off. The problem persists regardless if this option is checked on or off. This problem persists in or out of safe mode, even with the brand new install.
Test Cases:
All cases:
Firefox is selected as the default browser for windows 7
Case 1: Open a firefox session. Utilize any other program that attempts to open a link to their website in a new browser window or new browser session. Experience "Firefox is already running" error
Case 2: Open a firefox session. Right click on Firefox on the task bar. Select "open in new window". Experience "Firefox is already running" error
Case 3: Open a firefox session. Select the Firefox Menu > New tab > New Window. A new window will actually open.
This is the only method of opening a new window in the same browser session or profile that actually works on my system. Attempting to open a browser session from the task bar "open new window dialog" or opening a new window while a current window/session is running will not open firefox in a new window or a new tab in the current session. The "Firefox is already running, but is not responding" error will occur every time.

Cor-el's suggestion resolved my problem. Apparently the MOZ_NO_REMOTE variable was set to 1 on my system variables. I never made it, and really have no idea how it got there, but deleting this variable and restarting firefox has resolved the issue. Thanks Cor-el!
Marking case: Solved
Solution: Verify the MOZ_NO_REMOTE variable is NOT set to 1. This can be achieved by simply deleting this variable.

• How to change the default browser in Xfce

Hi all,
I just installed Arch and am still using Openbox, but I was looking for info on how to change my default applications. After reading through several posts and documentation pages, I came across two handy files in my /usr/share/applications folder called, simply enough, Preferred Applications. For other newbies out there trying to change their default browser and having trouble succeeding with
$ nano /usr/bin/xdg-open
this seems to be a pretty quick fix. It feels pretty obvious, so I'm not sure if it's a warranted post, but I know it was a neat feature to discover and thought others might benefit.

You may want to mark your post as "[SOLVED]" so people that are looking for this info know that it is not just a question that has not been answered. And so people that are looking to help don't open and read through to find out it is not needed.
Or edit the title of the post to say "A way to change..." or something so it looks less like a question.

• How to change default browser to Firefox.

Hi,
I've upgraded our Solution Manager 7.0 to EHP1. Most of the applications that I use: sld, smd, user admin, etc. run fine in my default browser, Firefox.
But when I use a workcenter, RCA for example, and I open a webdynpro application which runs on a separate browser window, Internet Explorer is always used. How can I change this behaviour to choose the right default browser ?
Regards,
Joan

Hi Joan,
You can set in your Firefox. Go to Tools->Options. Choose the Main tabs, then press button Check Now in system default and if your firefox not set as default browser you will be asked to change the default browser from IE to firefox. I've been using firefox as default browser to test workcenter service.
Hope it helps.
Rgds,
Desty.

• How do I set up a different default browser other than firefox?

I would like my juno email page to come up everytime I open a new page but I can't seem to figure out how to change my default browser. Right now anytime I open a new tab the search engine is blank and it shows avg search engine. No matter what I put in the search engine after it goes to that page the search engine goes blank again. Because it keeps going blank it also keeps bringing you back up to it. So you might click on something and start writing and next thing you know you're writing in the browser again all because it disapears. It's very annoying. I want to get it off the avg search engine so I stop having these problems. I use to always have it open to my email start page so I would like to do that again or anything else if it will stop going to avg and it will keep what I ask for in the browser.

Normally, Firefox will fill the new tab page with 9 thumbnails for your frequently visited sites. You can change that to the Juno URL if you like. Here's how:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''newtab''' and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the '''browser.newtab.url''' preference and enter your preferred page:
* ''Page thumbnails (default)'' => about:newtab
* ''Blank tab'' => about:blank
* ''Built-in Firefox home page'' => about:home
* ''Any other page'' => full URL to the page ''you may want to copy this from another tab first for easier pasting''
Press Ctrl+t to open a new tab and verify that it worked. Fixed?
* If Firefox ''refuses to save the change'', check your Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program, for something named Search Protect and get rid of it.
* If Firefox ''ignores the change'', one of your extensions may be overriding it. You can review, disable, and/or remove extensions on the add-ons page:

3-bar menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > ''in the left column click'' Extensions
IMPORTANT: Your More System Details shows a user.js file in your profile. Firefox will use this file at startup to override your previous session settings. This article describes how to track down and remove the file: [[How to fix preferences that won't save]].
Any luck?

• NavigateToURL not working on Mac Projector with Firefox as Default Browser

I'm making a CD with both a PC (exe) and Mac (app) projector file on it. I have a button that navigates the user to our client's website with the following code:
var webBtnURL:String = "http://www.clientswebsiteURL.com";
web_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, gotoWebsite);
function gotoWebsite(e:MouseEvent):void
navigateToURL(new URLRequest(webBtnURL), "_blank");
This works perfectly on the PC projector file, with either Firefox or IE as the default browser. However, I've found that if Firefox is the default browser on the Mac side, it just opens Firefox and navigates to a blank page. If Safari is the default browser it works fine. The Mac I was testing this on was a PowerPC instead of an Intel Mac, so I don't know if that makes a difference or not, but it had the latest version of Firefox on it.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
