  • Why is my computer constantly freezing up

My Mac is constantly freezing up. I have plenty of hard drive space and my memory is all good. Once it is turned on, it will occasionally have a flashing file with a question mark, but not as many times now since I have cleared out most of the files and did a couple disc verifies and repairs. It will come on now, sometimes for 20 minutes, if im lucky, and freeze up. Most of the time it is within 10 minutes of restarting it.
It also does something wierd. When its on, you can hear the computer processing information ( thats my guess of what its doing), but if I turn off the mac, and unplug it from the wall, I can still hear it working??
I just want it fixed, I am not sure of whats going on with it, but it is getting annoying. If anyone does know and how much it will cost to fix, please let me know.
To be honest, I would almost get a pc, but all my adobe creative suite is the mac edition, and I cant afford to buy it again.v So ANY info, would be awesome info.

flashing file with a question mark
Appears when the system can't find a drive to boot from. Have you tried repairing the drive in Disk Utility? Drive may be getting flaky and could fail. Make a backup ASAP.

  • Computer is constantly freezing

I have a MBP that I purchased in fall 2006. Over the last several months I am having problems with it locking up on me. A couple of different things happen. One common one is when I have multiple programs open (say safari, excel-that JUST happened). I try to go from one program to another and the computer just freezes right in the middle. Other times the screen goes blue, white, or black. I always used to have I-tunes open and thought that might have contributed but lately I just open what I am using and the problem continues. It is getting rather frustrating to put it mildly... I just upgraded the memory from 1g to 2 hoping that would help. I did have a similar problem in the past and did a re-install(i'd rather not do that again). That seemed to hep for a while but it has gotten real bad now. It also happened three or four times in a row this morning and I was only using safari( two different tabs though). Any ideas on what is going on?
PS - I always install all the updates that I get from apple.

Thanks for your reply - kind of clueless with some of this, but here it goes. It's a mbp, 15". 2GB 667MHz; process speed is 2GHz. I am at 10.4.11. Regarding maint - what SHOULD I be doing? I run the disk utility from time to time, probably at least monthly. HD has 37.9G avail, 36.3 used. I don't have a heck of a lot of stuff on it - 10g of music, maybe 5g of pics, not too many files(some excel, word, etc). What other info would I need to provide?
    Thanks again - Drew

  • Motion constantly freezes computer.

Motion 3 constantly freezes my completely updated macbook pro not running leopard. Any ideas....also, when I export my graphics with animation codec with alpha channel, they constantly flicker on and off and have artificats that flicker on and off. Any suggestions?

First port of call would be to trash your prefs. Then maybe take a look at the Ozone problem thread below which goes into great detail about crashing problems.
Did you do an archive & install? This is known to be problematical with Motion.
What are you looking at your animation codec movie on? It won't play back in real time in FCP - try rendering it on a timeline.

  • I downloaded the new Firefox but it constantly freezes, doing absolutely nothing, and I can't even close it from my Mac dock bar, I have to turn off my laptop using the power button as Firefox won't let me shut down. What can I do?

    Hi
I recently downloaded the new Firefox (Firefox 4, I think - you can tell I'm very tech savvy!) and it constantly freezes, I can't do anything with it at all - I can't even close it from the icon in my Mac dock bar.
I have tried restarting my computer - though I have to turn it off by using the power button as as Firefox is open and totally unresponsive it won't let me shut down. About a minute after re-starting Firefox, restoring my tabs or starting afresh, it freezes again.
This is obviously very annoying and I'm not sure what I can do about it. Firefox is my preferred browser, and I'd really like to be able to use it again!

This is not a reply. I just want to elaborate on this problem.
My computer freezes occasionally when it is used after being sleep for a while. The spinning ball appears and everything is totally disabled. Nothing on the keyboard works.
The mouse moves, but does not work.
The only solution is to turn the power off and on (losing all data in open applications.)
I kept the System monitor running on the side to find out which program was running when the computer froze. The Monitor as well as all other applications froze, but the data showed:
    Firefox 18.4%
    Activity Monitor 0.9%
    Firefox Plugin 0.2%
This is all the information I have. By the way, I am using iMac with OS 10.6.

  • Mail constantly freezes

Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks, which was shortly after it was released, Apple Mail constantly freezes. It's an odd sort of freeze in that I can still scroll through existing mail and can compose a new email. However, it doesn't bring in new mail and if I write a new email and try to send I just get the spinning beach ball and then have to force quite. Once it has hung up, it won't work again unless I completely restart my computer. What I have noticed is that the Mail hang often happens when I have InDesign open. Also if Mail is frozen, Safari seems to freeze at the same time.
Since there seems to be some correlation with InDesign, have been wondering if fonts might be an issue as I use Suitcase in conjunction with InDesign. Anyway, after the last Mavericks update it seems as if the freezing is now occurring even without InDesign being open and it happens on a daily basis, to the point where I'm about to give up on using Mail. When I first had the problem it seemed like it was related to Gmail accounts (I have 2 in my Mail Account), but from everything I have read this should have been solved.
Anyone have any thoughts on this problem. I've been a longtime Mac user and this is the first time I've ever had such a prolonged issue after an upgrade.

So just happened. Was in Lightroom and tried to email a photo. Grabbed items from console. Hopefully enough and not too much:

  • Lightroom CC Constantly freezes

Lightroom CC is constantly freezing up.  It doesn't seem to matter whether I'm in Develop mode, Library mode, or any other.  It takes one to three minutes to untangle itself, then continues as normal for a short while until the next freeze.  It will freeze on any keyboard shortcut at random, and will occasionally even freeze on mouse clicking the icons.  I have found no set pattern to the freezes.  I unchecked the "Use Graphics Acceleration" check box as my graphics card doesn't support Open GL 3, and that helped make the program marginally useable, but didn't solve the problem.  I gather that the program doesn't throw most tasks to the GPU acceleration anyway.  I'm at a loss.  Any suggestions?
I now find that unless the computer is connected to the internet 100% of the time Lightroom is open, the freezes happen virtually all the time.  If the computer is connected to the internet, however, freezes are virtually non existent.  I don't always have internet when I wish to work on my photos, and I find this requirement extremely irritating.  Does Adobe really need to monitor my every move?????
Message was edited by: Charles Liner

I save edited images from Photoshop into a new folder on the same hard drive my catalog is on, then attempt to import, or to right-click on the edited image and choose Open in Lightroom. Lightroom hangs in either situation.

  • Premiere CS5 constantly freezing & unfreezing

I've been using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 for about 1 year now and I've never had problems with my hardware not being fast enough to handle my projects.  I am editing 1920x1080 24p video from my 7D.  I only have two video tracks and three audio tracks and the program constantly freezes and unfreezes only to freeze again moments later. The length of the project is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes long.   Does anyone know of any known issues inside of premiere that I might try to speed things up?
    Here are my computer’s specs:
    Windows 7 Pro 64bit
    Intel Core 2 Quad 6600 2.4GHz
    8GB of DDR2 ram
Separate 7200rpm hard drive for video files
    NVIDIA Geforce 9600GT
I know my video car is not combatable with the mercury playback engine, but I feel like the software shouldn’t be freezing with two videos layered.
I have antivirus software turned off, indexing turned off, internet disabled, and no other programs running.  It seems as though I can open other Premiere projects without the program freezing.  Is it possible one of the video files is causing the program to perform poorly?

Thank you all for your answers.  I think I have a combination of issues.
    1.  Outdated computer.  I will be purchasing a completely new computer in
2012.  I'd like to hear you suggestions for a windows 64bit set up.  Is
16GB of ram enough?  I was going to get a Intel i7 3.4GHz processor.  Which
video card should I get?  Trying to spend about $1,000 on the mother board,
video card, ram, and processor.  Should I use a RAID configuration?
    2.  I was trying to edit 23.997 fps footage in a 29.997 timeline... oops.
I restarted and used the correct frame rate in my project to match my
    footage and everything works fine.
    3.  I installed all of the recent updates yesterday. Seems to be helping a
    little.
Has anyone tried to force Premiere to utilize an NVIDIA Geforce 9600GT for
    the mercury playback engine?
    Thanks for all your help...

  • Why does my internet constantly freeze since I hooked up Airport Extreme?

I purchased an Airport Extreme for Wi-Fi and to back up my MacBook files.  I had it hooked up for about 2 week now and since then, it seems our internet is constantly freezing.  Sometimes its just once other times it happens every few minutes.  We stream video often and it has been getting stuck all the time.   It seems to be the worst in the early morning and around 8:30 at night.
I'm not network savvy but will try to secribe how it is hooked up.  I have the airport connected via a modem (not wifi) with Ethernet.  The internet is DSL.  There is also a security camera connected to a D-Link router that I plugged into the Airport.  There's also some kind of internet feed for our PV system that I connected directly into the Airport too.
We have Apple TV, 1 Macbook, 2 iPads, 2 iPhones, 1 iTouch, 2 PCs, 1 Sam Sung phone.   There can be up to 3 devices streaming video at once.  I thought it had something to do with the D-Link camera but not sure.
We disconnected the Airport today and connected a Westtell router and so far no freezing.  I saw some posts about D-Link and Airport Extreme not being compatible but I'm not sure what that means.  If they are incompatible, does that mean I have to choose to use the Airport and get rid of the security camera or vice versa??
I'm frustrated because the Extreme was expensive and I'm wondering if I can ever get it working.

On your MacBook: Go to System Preferences > Network. Select Wi-Fi from the left column. Click the Advanced... button.
Under the Preferred Networks list, select every Wi-Fi network that appears and delete each one using the "–" (minus) button. Select the box "Remember networks this computer has joined" if it is not already selected.
    OK then Apply.
Select your AirPort Extreme's wireless network in your Mac's Wi-Fi menu, and determine if that solves its connection problems.
Our alarm company set up the camera with the D-Link before we got the Ariport and we can't figure out how to hookup the camera to the Airport without the D-Link.
You may need to solicit the security company's help. Adding your Extreme to your network as a router constitutes a fundamental change in your network's design. If you are now using the Extreme as your router, the D-Link router should be reconfigured as a bridge. Depending on the nature of your security system, it may not be required at all, but your concern about the security camera requiring specific port forwarding settings is justified. Changing your router from the D-Link to the Extreme may require forwarding specific ports using AirPort Utility, otherwise your security camera's video may not be accessible from the Internet. This goes beyond any help I can provide, since your security system has requirements of its own.
Configuring the Extreme as a bridge is likely to solve the problem... but if the D-Link wireless router was sufficient, do you really need another access point? The reason I'm asking is this:
... I purchased an Airport Extreme for Wi-Fi and to back up my MacBook files.
If you need a wireless backup device for Time Machine, a Time Capsule may be a better choice.

  • Ibook G4 constantly freezing

My only six month old iBook G4 is constantly freezing whilst I am working. It freezes no matter what I have open, no one program seems to be causing the problem, and I have to force quit and restart. Sometimes on restart the fan blows really hard and then it just starts. Other times it beeps at me and flashes the sleep light.
It's been in to Apple twice, the first time the tech said it was running a bit hot but no problems apart from that. The second time he replaced the HD. This was two weeks ago and I've been having problems since yesterday. It's taken me about six goes to type this because it keeps locking... I think the computer is a lemon because obviously the replacement hard drive has done nothing. I need to get something done about it ASAP as I am moving overseas and will need to have a reliable computer to work from.

"Other times it beeps at me and flashes the sleep light."
"it did the flashing thing once with one tone."
"I've been having problems since yesterday"
    miss-andromache,
I suppose you have a perfect right to ignore the beeps and flashes, but since your iBook is still under warranty, I am lost as to why you would choose to do so. Having read thousands and thousands of posts on these boards, I have never read a report that a power on self-test was not accurate. In fact, I'm not sure it's possible for there to be a false self-test report. These can not be random beeps and flashes, as the iBook never produces random beeps and flashes. You can verify this by searching these forums.
If I were you I would not hesitate to take Apple's advice: "If you experience one of these beeps, you may call your Apple Authorized Service Provider for additional troubleshooting assistance."

  • Constantly freezing

My video iPod is constantly freezing now. It gets a distorted screen image, and then freezes. This happens when listening to music, playing games, or just navigating the iPod. Resetting the iPod gets it to work for a few minutes, but it then freezes again. I've also restored the iPod twice, and still experience the same problems. Can anyone out there direct me in how to fix this?
    Thanks in advance!!

    Hey Ben Frith,
Here's a couple of things to try:
    ================================
Try restoring your iPod. For more info, see here -> Restoring your iPod
If that doesn't work, then do you have iTunes 7.0 or 7.0.1? If you don't have 7.0.1, then download it here, and now try restoring your iPod again.
Try going back to iTunes 6:
    1 - Eject/disconnect your iPod.
2 - Save your iTunes library, by either making a backup on DVD, or saving the current location of your library on your computer to a different location.
3 - In Control Panel, go to "Add or Remove Programs". Remove "iTunes".
4 - Now, go here to download iTunes 6.0.5 from Apple.com.
5 - Now, restore your iPod.
Have you tried reinstalling your iPod's firmware? Follow the instructions here -> iPod could not update because the firmware file was corrupt and unreadable
    See if that does anything.
