My computer crashed, erased my iTunes.

Everything on my computer is erased. I have about 1500 songs on my iPod. How do I get it so I can redownload iTunes and have it so they don't get erased? I really don't want to redownload all those songs.

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

My old computer crashed, I have itunes backedup on a WD passport drive. I found a music folder on that drive and move it to my desktop on a new computer runing windows 8. I downloaded Itunes software to the new computer. How do I put the the folder with my itunes music into Itunes?

Restore the songs from a backup, or use these instructions to redownload them through the iCloud if doing so is free in your country.

Yes. I have no personal experience with this, but it is possible to recover your music from an iPod. See this link: http://guides.macrumors.com/Recovering_Songs_from_an_iPod

  • Computer crashed, lost all itunes but they are still on IPOD- sync trouble

My computer crashed and I lost everything including my itunes library- luckily all my music is on my ipod. I found the latest itunes and installed it and then found I had to register the computer for itunes which I did. There is an option to tranfer purchases (which I assume means transfer them from my ipod to my computer) but every time I try this the whole thing freezes. Also the computer appears to sometime have trouble recognising the ipod- when I try to access the USB through my computer is says there is no disk. It appears I can't put any new songs on until I sync the ipod- but my only options appear to be sync and erase and I will lose hundreds of dollars of music.

    Welcome to AD!
Is your PC authorized for the itunes store? If so, when you connect your ipod, you should see a message about transferring purchases. Here is a screenshot of that message

Clearly, you DO NOT want to push the "erase and sync" button!

If your iPod is set to update automatically you just need to take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No* (or "Cancel" if you are using iTunes 7). Pressing "Yes" (or Erase and Sync in iTunes 7) will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod

You can't sync or drag your non iTMS music back directly from an iPod to iTunes. The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. • I lost my music when my old computer crashed and did itunes on my new computer and can get it back

i lost my music when my old computer crashed and when i got my new computer it erased all my music from itunes and my iphone 4... Please help!!!

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you failed to maintain a backup ( not good), then you can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • Computer crash - iTouch to iTunes?

HP Windows vista computer crashed and i had to re-stage/restore to factory condition. I had backed up my iTunes library a month prior but made several purchases on iTunes in that month without backing them up. The music purchases are all on my iTouch but i cannot get them synced back into my new iTunes.
This has only happened with the music i purchased, the apps i had bought in that time synced just fine. Any solution to get songs back into iTunes? Or any way to burn songs on an iTouch to cd?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Computer crashes when installing itunes

First I was having an issue where iTunes would quit every time I put a CD in (I tried with several CDs) I then tried to upgrade iTunes and halfway through the download my computer shut down. Then I started getting an error message every time I tried to open iTunes saying something like I have a corrupt version or that it was installed incorrectly. I have made several attempts and each time my computer shuts down at the same point in the download. I tried removing iTunes from my computer so I could reinstall it but it is saying that the item "PGS" is in use so I can't remove it. Any ideas?? I'm completely lost!
I just learned that every time I try to install it I get a "kernel panic" and my computer crashes.

Ok so the problem ended up being larger than I thought it was. My computer was crashing once a week for months and then it started crashing every time i tried reinstalling itunes.. I finally brought it to an apple store and they are replacing my hard drive :/ Fortunately I back up all my important files.

  • Computer crashed. Old itunes account lost. How do I...

The old account was lost so I had to reinstall itunes and start a new account.
To make a complicated question simple, is it possible to sync up my old ipod with a new account. I have all of my music, pictures, etc on this old ipod but nothing to sync it to.
    Thanks for any help provided.

Okay, I actually found my old account. It was my wife's account and she was putting the username incorrectly.
Still a problem, my ipod still won't sync up with the account. I'm not sure why, it's the same old ipod with the same old account.
I think my backup was lost when my computer crashed. So the only music I have on the itunes account is what I bought directly from them.
Any ideas on why this won't sync up?

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.  Use your backup copy of your computer ot put everything back.

My computer crashed recently and obviously took out everything with it. is there any way that I can transfer the music from my iPod into iTunes? i don't want to have to rip 4 thousand songs back onto my computer
i tried searching for acticles, but all I found was how to transfer between computers by turning the ipod into a hard drive. unfortunately, i don't have an old computer to transfer from.

You can't sync your music back from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes

  • How to sync iPhone to new computer without erasing? (iTunes 11.0.5)

I recently purchased a new computer (MacBook Pro OSX 10.8.5) and I've tried everything to sync my iPhone (3GS) to iTunes (11.0.5)  without having to erase everything and I haven't had any success.
There must be someone out there who has been able to sync their phone to the new iTunes without having to erase all the content on their phone.
    Any help?

    Hi,
    Option 1:
If you have purchased a new Mac from an Local Apple store, I'd advise you to bring in your old computer along with your new one in, and have them assist you on transferring. (Assuming your computer doesn't not even power up)
    Option 2:
If your computer can be powered up (seeing the Apple Logo), and your hard drive is fine, then you can connect the two computers by using a Firewire cable, and then transfer the music files by drag and drop.
         http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661
    Option 3:
There are 3rd party software that you may purchase used to extract music from your iPhone, but it will have to be done at your own risk.  You may Google for extracting music from iPhone for a start.
