My computer crashed, how do I get my purchases back?

I don't have my purchases backed up on an iPod because I was just using an iPod shuffle. Can I redownload the songs/podcasts/audiobooks etc. without having to pay again?

You cannot.
You buy one and only one download. It is your responsibility to move/copy/backup your music.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer files/docs/pics/music/etc.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.

Computer Crashed - How Can I Get My Songs Back?

My computer crashed so I had to reinstall itunes. Now when I plug in my ipod shuffle it tells me my ipod is linked to another library and asks if I want to replace all of my songs with the songs from this library. I have over 200 songs on my ipod, many that I bought and I don't want to lose them all. Is there any way that I can get the songs on my ipod shuffle onto my itunes?

Are the songs only on the pod? It also sounds like from the urgency that you don't have a backup. Computers crash or hardware fails all the time, this is why backups are soooo important. Lecture over, sorry about that.

You should be able to copy iTunes purchases to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases. For music that you've bought from other sources or copied from your own CDs then have you not got a backup of them on, for example, an external drive that you can copy onto the computer ? If not then you will need to find a third-party program to copy them off - this post mentions some that were around a couple of years ago, whether they still exist and work I don't know.

The music sync is one way - computer to iphone. The only exception is itunes purchases.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.

Open iTunes and then connect you to the iTunes store
and on the right you will see "Purchased"
and it will show you all the app that you have purchase during the years , and on right corner of the page you can choose to download everything again

It shows on iTunes SOME of my past purchases, but not all (looks like around 30-40% of purchases).    It shows on my apple id purchase history everything i have purchased; but in iTunes, some not all of these show up.    What does show up is kind of "greyed out", so NOTHING will actually play.   I have followed the steps in the iTunes support about how to redownload past purchases, but this dowsn't work, as the download button is also "greyed out".
I am extremly angry and upset about this issue. Could someone please help / advise re how to fix????

I'm hoping that this may be just a misunderstanding somewhere.
