"My computer crashed and need to know how to transfer my music from my iPod to a new computer"
You can't sync or drag your non iTMS music back directly from an iPod to iTunes. The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    iGadget Windows Only
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    PodPlayer Windows Only
    CopyPod Windows Only
The transfer of purchased content to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7, look under under File>"Transfer Purchases from iPod". A paragraph on it has been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
"I'm afraid I'll lose all my music"
If your iPod is set to update automatically you just need to take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • My ipod is locked to where it has to be plugged into itunes to fix it, but our computer crashed, so itunes is no longer available, and it won't work. What should i do?

this is not my ipod. it is my friend's. her computer crashed and itunes was destroyed. how can i fix it?

You need a computer with iTunes and an internet connection.  First redownload all apps on the new computer.  See:
How to redownload purchased apps from the App Store
Then connect the iPod to the computer and try to restore the iPod via iTunes.  You will be asked to enter the passcode.  If you have the passcode you may be able to make a backup.  If so then backuop it by right clicking on the iPod in iTunes and select backup.  Then restore from backup. If the passcode is unknown they you will have to place the iPod in recovery mode and then restore it .  You will have to restore to factory defaults since the computer does not have a backup.

that sounds like a Fast User Switching issue. these documents might be of some help with that:

  • HT1386 I have an older iPod (5th gen, 30GB+video).  My computer crashed and itunes was no loner accessible on it.  On my new computer, how do I transfer the music from my iPod to the library in iTunes that is on my new computer?

I have an older iPod (5th gen, 30GB+video) that I had connected to my computer with iTunes.  That computer crashed and the only place my music is stored is on my iPod.  How do I move that music to the iTunes program (version 8) on my new computer.  When I connect my iPod to my new computer the music shows up in my iPod's music directory but I can't move it to the library.

  • Old computer crashed and iTunes won't let me sync my old iPod

My old computer crashed and when I plug my old iPod into my new computer, iTunes asks me if I'd like to erase all the music from the iPod and copy whatever music I have within my new iTunes. I lost a lot of my c.d.'s when I moved, so I don't want to do that. How do I get all my music from my old iPod onto my new computer?

    Hello Justin,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
See this article for instructions on how manually copy the contents of your iPod back over to your new computer. Even though the article mentions Vista and XP, Windows 7 should be similar to Vista.

Otherwise, see this older post by Zevoneer for countless other ways to copy it back over.

  • My iPhone is deleting music by itself! Please help! My computer crashed so iTunes is out of the question

A few days ago, my computer crashed, and being the Deadmau5 fan that I am, I can't survive without my concert DVDs. So I deleted all my photography apps (using the iPhone, of course) to make room for a concert movie. I didn't delete any music because by the time I deleted a few apps I had enough room. Before buying the film that was 3.6 gb, i had 5.5gb free. So I bought the film, and the phone automatically and by itself deleted 5 gigs of music that was ripped from CDs that no longer play. Need that music for my job (i know it sounds weird but trust me). Please help me I'm on my knees

If you lost your device a month ago, did you have Find My iPhone active on it before it was lost? If so, then you needed to log into www.icloud.com with your information and try to locate the device. I'm not sure about where you are receiving these emails from, but can you see the device in iCloud? If you are using another device, did you cancel the service on your other device? If so, that could be part of the problem of why you are having difficulty locating yours. To locate the device, it has to be powered on, it has to have Find My iPhone activated before it was lost/stolen, and it has to have an active internet connection. If any of that is interrupted, then it will not work.
Apple does not locate devices, so there really isn't any customer service for Find My iPhone. Not sure what you are asking about that. The Find My iPhone app on the girlfriend's phone is just another avenue for you to get into your iCloud account to try and locate the device. If it does not show up in Find My iPhone, then the device either did not have Find My iPhone active before you lost it, it is powered off, or, in case you did not have a passcode on the device, it has been erased.

  • My old computer crashed.  Please help.

My old computer crashed, and I just installed itunes on the new computer. All of my music from my old computer is stored on my ipod, but when I try to sync on the new computer it tells me that I can only have one itunes library at a time. It appears to only give me the option to erase everything on my ipod and start with the new library, but I want to do that the other way around. Any suggestions?

  • Computer Crashed, iPod stolen

My computer crashed and my iPod was stolen all in the same week, so I was just wondering if there was any way for me to get my previously purchased songs that I downloaded onto my new computer? I did not back them up, but last time this happened a couple years ago, I was able to just re-download my purchases. Thank you for the help.

As policy, the download of purchased content such as music, movies, and TV shows can be done once with maintaining a backup of this data your responsibility. iTunes support may make another exception as they did for you two years ago, but you need to contact iTunes support for this.

  • Computer crashed. iPod broke. Lost all 400 songs. Needs them back.

My computer crashed and my iPod broke. I lost iTunes on my iPod and my computer. I had A LOT of songs that I paid for. I want them back.
    HELP!

same thing happened to my sister. apple didn't want to know (as always)
she had to buy a new computer AND a new ipod (silly her!)
    good luck with this, tho.

  • Computer crashed, ipod synced to new computer, purchased songs are gone.

My computer crashed. I used EphPod to download my ipod mini onto the new computer. It looked like all the songs were transfered so when I went to resync it in Itunes, I clicked "erase and resync". Then a window popped up saying that some songs wouldn't be transfered because the computer was authorized to play them. I clicked resync anyway since I have no way to deauthorize the computer that crashed. I thought EphPod had downloaded the purchased songs. It didn't. Is there any way I can retreve my purchased songs? Are they stored in my Itunes account or something?
    Thank you for your help.

The policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage."
You could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. If you click on any of the links on this page you'll find a space at the bottom to email your query: iTMS Customer Service

  • Computer Crashed: I need help badly!

Ok so my computer crashed the other day. I still have all my songs on my iPod but not on computer. I had to reinstall iTunes and I know that if i plug it in for the first time it will update and completely empty my iPod. How do i make it not automatically update? or better yet, what is the best way to fix this whole mess without losing my songs...is there anyway to put them from my ipod onto a disk or a drive or anything just so I dont have to redownload and dig up all my old CD's to put them on there. Thanks.

There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod. This is just a selection.

There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive posted in this thread: iPod to iTunes
When you connect, if you are getting a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, click *No*. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list. Change the update setting in Preferences>iPod to "manually manage songs and playlists" Managing Your Songs Manually
If you prefer, you can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys, on Windows, hold down Shift + Ctrl. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 3 and 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box.
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.
Just a last reminder, if you are getting a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, click *No*.
